It's quite interesting how most here criticize the intelligence of the American public, but can't seem to use proper grammar and/or spell correctly themselves.  Most of you are solipsistic, self aggrandizing mutts with nothing better to do than troll the internet looking for ways to make yourselves feel better.  You've all tainted the quality of this site with your shallow remarks and lopsided views.  Making money isn't about seeing the obvious; it's about knowing how everyone is going to react to it.  Mazel tov....

Krugman is literally an economic ignoramus.  I have never read anything by him that would make me think he knew the slightest bit about economics.  I haven't read the others, but gauging by the rest of your post... I can only assume they are cheerleaders for the state and economic control.  You sir need to open your eyes and see your statists, mercantilistic policies are straight out of the middle ages.  They don't work.  LEGALIZE competing currencies... and watch the people flee the FRN and the dwindling effectiveness and power of the government.

If parents would only give their kids some books and take them to the library every once in a while, it would make high school much easier for the kids. Reading is the mental gateway to everything.

Another family of Obama bumbeper sticker CS'ers lost their $1.2 million home on my street.  Held on forever like the grifter f**ks they are.  I guess the paperwork finally came through a few months ago.

it's a 3.25% decline in the average score number based on the standard (last I knew) 800 point value for a perfect score.  'Bout 5% if you go off the initial average score.

That the average is ~300 points lower than the perfect is the most telling part, the average score is an F if you are grading on a 100 point scale.

It drives me nuts. My students say it and I must let it ride with a straight face. Not politically correct to correct oh don't cha know!

Edit: I need to add to this post. If it is language that is used by a large number of folks, who am I to impose my standard? Meanwhile, when they are out there in the job market I KNOW WHAT STANDARD WILL BE IMPOSED. There are ways our hands are tied you just don't know.

I just use the space I have to try and teach critical thinking. I think it is all I have the power to do.

Down here in GA, my wife teaches kindergarten, and is FORBIDDEN from teaching kids how to count past 30.  Positively ludicrous.  How do you test for that?  If they can, does she get a knock on her review?  Sadly, yes.

That's because 30 is the biggest number. Or is it 24?

Some do look at me funny. I have been accused of really odd things. So far, I have been able to stay out of trouble. But it really is a consideration. So many things can only be said behind closed doors about what is happening in the academy. To say it out loud brings the wrath of God down on you. I once said in a faculty meeting that we were running a Ponzi scam and I was ashamed to be a part of it. One of my colleagues (who agrees in private) peered into my chair's face when I said it. He puffed up, got awkward, and then ignored me. In private, the story was told over and over. Many of us know damn well what is going on and we are powerless to stop it. I said the same thing to my dean, in private. He asked me what I meant by it. I said folks are getting in debt and they can't get jobs after. He told me I was just wrong and shut me down hard and ugly. I knew I was saying something he had never heard before. But the venom, I could tell that he had whispered it to himself.

I love to teach. Get off on it honestly. I also get off on truth. I cannot tell you how profoundly sad I am to be part of a system just to get a paycheck. I try to mitigate it by telling my students what I honestly see going on with the economy. Maybe they will get their money's worth that way. I don't want to be too arrogant, but they do like me and I do get great reviews, teaching awards, that stuff. But I am not free to just do and be. It is damn cloak and dagger.

I like wine. I have had two already.

I vacillate between feeling like a hypocrite and understanding that I am like a retro virus, occupying a site that usually replicates the cannon, and instead, I mutate, and tune them into financial events (charts, theory, history, news) as a way to "demonstrate" principles of my discipline. Sometimes I have just read something on ZH, Mish, or even Denninger (yes he is a douche, but he is a smart one with a lot of great observations) and I will be writing it into my lecture the day before. It is not all bad. But I do need to be careful.  I have a strong suspicion that it is like this many places, but folks don't quite label it this way.

Peace

. all the odds are on the man who is, intrinsically, the most devious and mediocre — the man who can most easily (and) adeptly disperse the notion that his mind is a virtual vacuum. The presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men. As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

Your post is problematic in so many ways, I don't have the time to enumerate them. Spamming for another website does not usually work for me, advertising accuracy works better when you are aware of grammar, Americans have made few of the decisions about war or egos, talking about China as if they are any better is absurd, I'll stop. I usually tell someone why I junked them if no one else has.

I'm all about insulting the idiot factories, the teachers' unions, and the general level of societal unintellectualism that exists in the U.S., but this chart, assuming that the SAT test difficulty has remained the same, which it may not have, seems to indicate that average scores are down 25 points over 40 years. If, however, you start at 1980, scores are about the same, with a one or two question variation. Not really much with which to make a point, eh?

Oh yeah. And if you don't figure out whether the pool of SAT takers has changed - for example by including more people who are unlikely to go to college regardless of their scores, or students in low income areas who are paid to take the test or who take it as part of normal high school matriculation - then you really aren't looking at meaningful data.

1980? So we've been shit-ass dumb for 30+ years? (Or possibly 40+ years - math was never a strong point.) Not an especially cheering statistic, although it does explain a few things.

The teachers' union is only part of the problem.  The other really big part is...you guessed it...government.  I would be willing to bet that if you overlayed Federal investments in education with that SAT chart, you would see a DIRECT correlation.

I speak on the matter as a former public and private school teacher.

I've always found it hilarious that trivia is the standard of measurement of a good citizen.

Meanwhile, my home schooled daughter likely wouldn't know most of those answers, but her reading comprehension (and writing skills) are far above most adults (especially grade-school teachers).

Oh, and she'll never prostrate herself in a voting booth, either.
