Jon Stewart's Extended Interview With Ron Paul

Tyler Durden's picture

About a month ago, after everyone in the wholly conflicted media (just ask one question: who pays all that advertising money - nuf said), on both the left and the right, was ignoring the most promising presidential candidate this country has had in decades, Jon Stewart decided to take Ron Paul under his wing, and made it clear that while those who don't matter can pretend to ignore Ron, the one man who does, and who reaches more than most of the legacy "serious media" combined, has certainly noticed Paul. Naturally Stewart could have left it there, especially given his own personal political view. To his great credit, he did not. Instead last night in an extended exclusive interview, he presented Ron Paul in a way that he should have been presented from the beginning: no tricks, no gotchas, no gimmicks, no commercial breaks every 45 seconds. Hopefully this is the beginning of the transition of the Paul campaign to one where he has enough critical mass to be taken seriously by everyone - something "everyone" should be doing regardless.

I don't think it matters who is in that chair. Paul would just get blamed for it all and the other congress critters would drag their feet on any of the initiatives. Frozen stalemate across the political grid. You need to replace the congress as well. And even then, the finances are so fucked that we can't "solve" the problems with anything short of "default" or a "National Debt Jubilee." There is no austerity or set of logistic solutions that let the current system stand. End of it.

UP F: I don't know about the ad hominem attack (nor do I know the latin for attack against the WOman) but you obviously have a thing for the zaftig (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Not my point.  The book is a) serious and b) piss-your-pants funny (but only in the case that you have a sense of humor or a perspective of historical nature).

Otherwise, have a wonderful night.

"Far from being the mere ‘son of a goat herder’ (as he deceptively paraded during and even before his candidacy), strong evidence has emerged that President Barack Obama is the product of the intelligence community. Investigative reporter and former NSA employee Wayne Madsen has put together an extensive three-part (and growing) series with conclusive proof and documentation that Barack Obama Sr., Stanley Ann Dunham, Lolo Soetoro and President Barack Obama himself all hold deep ties to the CIA and larger intelligence community. And that’s just the beginning."

The tenticles of fascism run deep

Geithner's paternal grandfather, Paul Herman Geithner (1902–1972), emigrated with his parents from the German town of Zeulenroda to Philadelphia in 1908. His father, Peter F. Geithner, was the director of the Asia program at the Ford Foundation in New York in the 1990s. During the early 1980s, Peter Geithner oversaw the Ford Foundation's microfinance programs in Indonesia being developed by Ann Dunham Soetoro, President Barack Obama's mother, and they met in person at least once.

And if one wonders why we were "stopping the domino effect" in Vietnam whilst simultaneously throwing the Rhodesians under the bus with UN sanctions...

Barack Obama, Sr., who met Dunham in 1959 in a Russian language class at the University of Hawaii, had been part of what was described as an airlift of 280 East African students to the United States to attend various colleges — merely “aided” by a grant from the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation, according to a September 12, 1960, Reuters report from London. The airlift was a CIA operation to train and indoctrinate future agents of influence in Africa, which was becoming a battleground between the United States and the Soviet Union and China for influence among newly-independent and soon-to-be independent countries on the continent.

We all have to do our part to wake up the masses.  I wrote a brief synopsis of RP and his opposition to the Fed in the op ed section of the local paper today trying to wake up the locals.  If their ears perk up, maybe they'll do some research and rely less on the idiot box.

The point isn't 'Saving' anything any more,  it's only about reaching people,  REAL people. That's what ZH does (and why we read it everyday).

Ron ain't going to be president.   That's not even the point anymore (I wrote him in in 2008), the point is all the people he has woken up.

Like B. Dylan,    THE effect Dylan had was to change and inspire the CHANGERs.  The people who came and wrote after him.  The multitude of song writers that were affected by Dylan.

So to,  Ron Paul.   There may be some young people who get into politics BECAUSE of him, Will want to pick up the torch and take it the next league.

He is waking up people THAT's ALL THAT IT'S ABOUT now.

So junk me guys.  Please excuse my ignorance. But,  to me RP is one of their tools that can be successfully used to give a false sense of hope to those people that still don't get it.  Using RP as one of their candidates can give those people the political illusion  that they do have a choice. Here is my question. Supposed RP gets elected and he doesn't do anything as he has promised just as any other politicians. Because all politicians are whores and the tools of the ruling elite. What are you going to do about it?

@reader2010. You are one who doesn't understand. They want you to think votes not matter, because that way you stay home, or you take gun to be arrested. We have power of the vote to change things, so have to use it. Suppose RP gets elected, yes of course, he will work with Congress and senate, but his election tells the ones in power a message from us. America is changing, the people are changing, you change or get left behind. We elect the right ones for the House of Representatives, and the right ones for Senate and then Ron Paul can really change things.

Who here want to run for Senate or the House, someone in Boehner district would be a good defeat.

The real question is "does your vote really count." People can't seem to read punched cards and with the Diebold electronic voting machines in play, the "outcome" seems to be questionable. Voting should always be done by human hands and counted by human hands no matter how advanced society becomes.

It's all a crooked game and I'm afraid a "little more" needs to be carried in Washington than just signs at the next "gathering."

I thought they used that card on Obama?! Change is now and Yes we can bla bla bla...Ron Paul has been trying to get his story across to the American people long before Obama was elected as president. Back then he didn`t get much support, nonetheless he was fighting for what he believed was right(and still is no doubt).

This guy is speaking right from his gut, without holding anything back. He has grilled Fed chairman Bernanke in Congress hearings and has been completely open with the american people. Most people are now aware of the situation the entire world is in, and as the unemplyment rates continue to rise it will be clear to many more that a complete overhaul is needed of the banking systems. Hopefully, this is the man that can at least start this process as he is the only one actually having the balls to confront the "Big Guns"

The thing about Ron Paul is you can not question his integrity. His decades long voting record is there for all to see. He has never wavered from his core beliefs of less federal government, less taxes, less war mongering. You may not like certain positions he has, but when you put him along side the other candidates and their verifiable corruptability, can you really choose anyone but Ron Paul? I'm surprised the powers that be dont help him get elected so that when TSHTF (which it appears is coming VERY SOON), they can blame Paul's "less government" as the problem, and take over the country after Paul's policies have cleared out all the bad debt that must be removed from the system, and institute Orwellian institutions.

Until he at least seeks to overturn the exemption from the laws they pass or propose, he is being disingenuous and his speaking ability is too helter skelter to follow, he can't finish one thought without jumping to another, like a kid with ADD.

Even if he doesn't fix shit, which a ton of people bring up, isn't him being a pain in the ass to the fed worth the price of admission? Compared to Romney/Obama, who plan on pissing off exactly nobody, i'll take irritant. And if assassinated before election, so be it, let's have another truth commission, just to see how dumb people are still. Ron Paul is not promising the moon, he's promising to undo the policies implemented with EO's, bring home troops from the wars, and put a knee on the neck of the Fed to shit or get off the pot. He can do all that and never need to use Congress. With the help of Congress he can get a lot more done in changing the direction of the country but will he undo decades of damage in 4 years, no. Will he set a precedent and possibly get another term, yes. The alternatives are not looking good otherwise.

I like Ron Paul but even he knows he cannot really challenge the TBTF Banks.  I have watched him back down on that a few times.

I think he wins by just getting his message out to the public by his running for President.  That way he gets the public to think about his ideas without actually confronting the FED.

I think Ron Paul knows how strong the FED and the Private banks are and although not really afraid of them, he walks a fine line of confrontation and not true action to dismantle them.

I remember his comments about whether he would get rid of the FED and he said NO, I would allow an alternate currency like Gold.

I know so many have their hopes and dreams on him but I am not so sure.  Much like Donald Trump.  Everyone loved what he said but he even backed off eventually from running for President.

The destiny of the Country is in the hands of the Bankers and the FED and no one person will change that.

Alternative currencies would force the Fed to be more responsible in its management of Federal Reserve Notes, or bankrupt it as demand for its worthless paper evaporates. Its implementation would involve little more than taking legal tender laws off the books.

Paul is way ahead of you on this--ending the Fed by decree will require a new fiat substitute to be conjured overnight; one that will eventually be destroyed, again, by central planning retardery (even "hard" money is not exempt from central planning fuck-ups; see how we got here).

The US needs a financial shake-up. I haven't followed the Repub primary stuff too much, but I am getting the feeling that Ron Paul is the real deal just because the mainstream right media completely ignores him. I can't believe that there can be entire discussions of Repub debates by Hannity, Rush, O'Reilly, Greta, etc. and they completely do not recognize his existence. Very weird. That has to tell me that he is anti-establishment and that they fear him.

I have been hearing that for a lot of years and was programmed as a kid with that kind of mindset in the media.  As soon as you think about it you realize that you are supposed to affect the election any way you want with your one vote, that this is what it is about.  Is your only pleasure being able to say I got this wonk elected?  The programming was to get you to vote for one of two. Options were unamerican.

If we could only sell the media on the idea of multiple parties and how many more people they could employ covering them. Think they want to have to keep fixing the camera to get orange boner just right?  or Harry Reid with enough makeup so he looks like he has blood circulation?  Everyone should have their say, instead of no one.

End the bankster FED

While people bitch about the evil tea-party, the tea-party brought the budget/debt/spending feral government under the spotlight. Ron Paul has consistently brought the FED front and center, where it should be.

I think the personal responsibility ship sailed a long, long time ago.  Probably when the intellectual elites decided that the masses were simply too simple to understand the increasingly sophisticated world.  That's when the elites stopped informing the public on important matters and shifted the public debate to the more trivial issues of the times.  Anyways, you can compare the state of personal responsibility to that of giving a stock tip or whatever- to the person who receives it, if it worked out, he is a genius and if it lost, 'you' give terrible advice.

Maybe this is just obvious common sense, but I will throw in my two cents here. I have been a follower of Ron Paul for a while now, especially after reading Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged back in 2007. While I agree with the principle of limited government, especially with respect to avoiding moral hazard, market distortions, and inefficiencies, I believe that the government does serve an important function which cannot be ignored. The government's function should be to ensure that the "free" market functions properly. The equilibrating behavior of free markets requires certain assumptions about their agents, such as complete information, interchangeable goods and services, zero transaction costs, and lack of market power. More importantly, in order for the "free" market to function, property rights must be enforced. These basic assumptions/parameters do not exist in nature, absent a government or enforcement mechanism.

Without the intervention of courts/government (rule of law) to enforce property rights and facilitate the parameters of the free market, the brute forces described in Ayn Rand's novel would cause the "market" to self-destruct into a state of chaos and robbery. Imagine how inefficient it would be to conduct business with someone if you cannot trust anybody from ripping you off or defrauding you. Or imagine having the confidence to invest in a region plagued by gangs and violence, where buildings are destroyed because the government does not pay for police officers or firefighters and every man for himself is the governing rule. Yes, some can argue that individuals with resources can provide their own security (buying their own guns and mobilizing militias) but that is not a world I want to live in. Ayn Rand (more so than Ron Paul) has a very simplistic, black-and-white view of how the world operates, and a distinct view about human nature and what society is capable of. Both of them have a very negative view of regulation.

The role of government should be limited to enforcing the rule of law, where such law is designed to facilitate the functioning of the market. This role includes regulation in addition to protecting property rights. I think that Ron Paul takes an extreme position in order to make a point, but he should also acknowledge that the government is not the enemy as long as we keep its main purpose in mind and tailor the laws accordingly. He is an advocate of states rights (federalism), but I have not yet made up my mind whether that is good for the "free" market, especially in light of regulatory arbitrage if states choose a race-to-the-bottom approach.

Ron Paul says that in a true libertarian society, you have to be responsible - that the regulations in the "free market" are much more stringent. But that makes no sense, especially given Jon's point about the industrial revolution and pollution. Instead of condemning government involvement altogether, Ron Paul should distinguish between necesary government regulation, versus undesirable government intervention (i.e. bailouts and Corporatism ruining our political system through special interests etc.).

Paul did say it would be illegal to pollute your neighbor. He did not present his free market as anarchy.

Wed, 09/28/2011 - 00:21 | 1717396 monkeymoney
monkeymoney's picture

Yes, but my argument is that he does not adequately distinguish between the government's role as a regulator to facilitate the free market, versus a force that distorts the free market. He just assumes a "libertarian society" but it leaves ambiguities as to whether the free market can regulate itself, or whether the government must step in and set rules. I would be surprised if he would promote pro-environment laws and energy efficiency, if those would be "governmental restraints" (regulations) that make our country less competitive vis a vis China, Vietnam, Indonesia, etc. The real question is WHICH regulations are rational and help facilitate the free market, rather than the ideology of deregulation and states rights (which could lead to forum shopping/regulatory arbitrage, increased transaction costs etc.)

I really can't stand how RP is treated by the GOP. I doubt THEY even want him to win and we all know why. He ought to just run as an independent because he has a huge following from both Republicans and Democrats that have realized how much common sense he speaks. If he ran as an independent he can crush all hopes for any republican douchbag to defeat Obama because he would haul a TON of votes away from them. Then as we all know, but the media never admits, Ron Paul would ABSOLUTELY crush Obama.

lad: in the following, there  is nothing against RP, per se.  Only some visceral practicalities.  Domestically, RP looks OK to me, foriegn policy not so much, but those are not a part of below:

"I doubt THEY even want him to win and we all know why."

'cuz he can't win.

"He ought to just run as an independent because he has a huge following..."

'cuz that third party thingie guarantees Our Dear President's re-election.

"... have realized how much common sense he speaks."

Of course he does, has been, what difference has that made?

"If he ran as an independent he can crush all hopes for any republican douchbag to defeat Obama because he would haul a TON of votes away from them."

I concur.

"Then as we all know,..."

We don't ALL know that.  Au contraire.

So, as the reddie-thingie-mob-feeding-frenzy-fest starts, consider the outcomes of the following.  There  were all kinds of people who KNEW that H would win in '92, that Nader would win in '00, that Wallace would win in '68, etc.

Third party R challenge guarantees current policies continue in high gear.

Don't cha' know.

He is asking people to reduce federal government, let the people join together sing "kumbaya" and control state governments because they are more "accessible" by the average Joe.

Sounds fine in principle.  Problem is the average person no longer trusts the other average person.  They may not admit it, but people are begging for the heavy hand of government and authority as long as it appears fair.

People have forgotten what it is like to be self-sufficient.

ron paul needs to come out and say these points

1) "" I'm not saying free markets are always perfect, but it's time to give them a chance ""

2) " the markets have been rigged for so long , by MAJOR subsidies for farming, big oil, and all the other big industries , that you cannot say we've had free markets for the last 40 years".

3) "corporations are not persons under a plain reading of the u.s. constitution and its amendments".

4) "everyone is scared of a major economic collapse, a lot of people insist it is coming. I for one don't believe this, but if it comes to pass, i believe the federal government should help the states to feed their citizens and make sure they don't starve, because a a libertarian government can take steps to help the state governments serve their citizens when there are simple, universal state welfare concerns at stake, like starvation of large quantities of people in your state. "

5) "people insist there is a lot of poverty in america and there is. but when i, as a doctor , when i see an obese person walking on the street who then talks about being imoverished, i think to myself that the u.s. has done a real headjob on itself in redefining poverty, just because people do not want to walk to get groceries and then cook those groceries for themselves and would rather eat junk food transported by a car , does not mean we are really in poverty. (and i hate fatties!) "

Funny you should mention that...I was just thinking of the socalled "opiumwars" that the US and NATO forces fight against in Afghanistan. During the Taliban-regime, the opium production was almost eradicated. When Taliban got overthrown by the US, the opium again started to blossom. And today, what, 90-95% of all heroin supply has its origins from Afghanistan...what war are these guys fighting? More like "making sure" the production is at its peak.

This is absolutely correct.  If you grew heroin under the Taliban you and your whole family were killed.

The reason the Afghanis started growing opium poppies in the first place was because Nixon convinced the then King of Afghanistan to make cannabis illegal.

This was after the king had been providing commercial fertilizer to the farmers to make better product.

Afghanistan's creation myth is all about cannabis.  They believe that there was a guy named Baba Ku (think I'm remembering that name right) who brought the mighty weed to Afghanistan and taught the people to farm it for food (contains all amino acids humans need as well as omega 3,6,9), fiber and its psychoactive properties.  The King making it illegal was a serious WTF moment for them culturally.  Talk about cognitive dissonance.

Totally off topic so back to the topic at hand.

Waste of time.  Nothing is going to change in this country from the plutocracy-filtered candidate pool we are allowed to vote for.  Even if, someday, someone _sounding like_ Ron Paul wins, there's going to be as little "Yes we can/Change" as there has been with the "great changer" Obama.

The forces behind the status quo system that takes advantage of the multi TRILLION dollar taxpayer gravy train will make damned sure that even if our dumbed down, zero attention span, American Idol watching voters should accidentally awaken somehow and vote for a boat rocker candidate that miraculously got through the oligarchical vetting process, there will be very little actual change to the status quo once he reaches office.

At this point, the only thing that will bring about significant change in this country would be a second American Revolution and that won't happen until a full-on economic collapse gets Joe and Jane Sixpack off the sofa and into the streets, if then.  Then, being as historically and politically ignorant as they are, we'll probably end up with some police state fascist in charge luring the uniformly ignorant with the dream of a return to our "former greatness" as a country.  Sound familiar?  1933 Germany?

Ron Paul 2012

Just once it would be nice to have a President that you don't want to punch in the balls during one of his speeches.  All my life they have deserved strong kicks to the nuts - I have always just thought it was this way.  Ron Paul would be a refreshing change.

Kudos to Jon Stewart, Ron Paul and not least of all to you T. D. for presenting this wonderful interview which I otherwise would have not seen!

Victory for War on Drugs once again! USA! USA! USA! USA!

When I was in High School in the early 70's it was easier to get Marijuana than Beer. My Grandson say's it is the same today. 40 years and a trillion dollars later...........WTF?

Ron Paul seems to be the only one to recognize failure when it's punching them in the face.

That was EXTREMELY painful to watch. Doddering old drooling fool. Is he really the best the libertarian movement has to offer? I shudder. Perhaps he a NWO plant to discredit the movement. Imagine him debating Kissinger? He would be motzha balls.

Sieg Heil to your rant, fascism's swan song in US of A. Watch out when the wheel turns and you get run over by the sheeple. Its happened before, it'll happen again. Never underestimate an irate people's rage.

What you start cannot be controlled... is what the Oligarchs always forget, time's arrow runs downwards to entropy zero. For all corrupt systems.

It was EXTREMELY painful to read your post. Sorry Ron didn't meet your expectations.

But Kissinger, really? That bloated sack of Neocon puss couldn't lick Ron Paul's nuts. That fat fuck and all the Neocon pricks like him created the decaying Empire of the United States and as it swirls the toilet bowl of history shitheads like you do nothing but whine.

Oh come on. Ron Paul is a laughing stock. It's the only reason he's alive. A perfect show-piece for the fringe crazy sovereign citizens hoarding PMs, guns and beans. The minute they lose their job at Auto-Zone they sell all of the above at a garage sale. In the meantime, a minor national security risk. Do you really think any honest person with a brain is going to run for public office. Let's balance the budget so we can have -14% GDP, worse than the great depression? Why risk the guillotine if you aren't even going to loot the treasury. Nothing you can do. Goldman Sachs wins. :-)

-1 for your lack of objective thinking and lack awareness of your soroundings. Truth and Principal left the stage a LONG time ago.

Then you are part and parcel to the problem.

You have given up, and attach your own sense of Truth and Principal to those who control you.

You appear to be cowering under the stage of others' making.

I am quite aware.

Given up? Hell no. My side is doing very well. You see I support the bankers, the Free-Masons, the New World Order and the military industrial complex. May they gas all your useless eater offspring after we suck you dry with generational debt slavery. 500,000,000 bitches. That's it. The rest have to go.

there were only 2 billion people on this planet before wwii.

there are 5 billion more now. 7 billion total.

you have your work cut out for you. it's not like just because the bankers turn the money off, people automatically starve.

but plauge and famine are the true destroyers of mankind, not war. that is da truth. or at least, used to be.

perhaps the deep urbanization in the last 50 years, and great increase in the agricultural machine choke points ( the ferlizer industry, big oil for transporting food,  and the capital equiment industry )----would make it far easier for population growth to unwind ---under a scenario where they became unavailable precisely at the same time,  as a major nuclear bombing campaign of all major cities was commenced.

and , just to boot, the drone swarms were then unleashed to finish off the survivors.

kinda like judgement day in terminator.

new world order for the win!!!

sweeeeet!

Thank BIG BUSINESS for lobbying for the opportunity to run the baseball bat up the collective asses of the "American People" every politician talks about. Politicians are wannabe businessmen - but with no talent, and no capital, and no work ethic. They are what they are. Might's well get pissed at the raccoon that raids your trash cans. He is just doing what evolution gave him a job to do. Corporate World Co is your friend - NOT ! They run the show - every one else is cannon fodder at best, or a problem to be eradicated immediately at worst. The new religion of the millennia. Be careful, or you will be branded as a witch and burned at the stake. Actually, if you read or comment on this website, you are already doomed, 'cause the fluoride in your water, drugs and pesticides in your food, and poison in the air have not yet eliminated free will, or cognitive thinking, the ANTICHRIST of corporate religion.

As for Ron Paul, one honest man will not make a dint in the cesspool of shit that is Washington, Dc

Good on Stewart.  RP has not received the major media air time he should by and large.

I cheered this interview last night despite not being a full-on supporter.  There does need to be much more of this because at the very least, it will move the debate in the electorate much closer to where it needs to be, namely away from the "hate thy neighbor" rhetoric we get from the religulous puppets he has to share a stage with most of the time.

He may never be President, but his work could open doors to much better choices for leadership round here.

You're shilling to the wrong crowd. Unless it's Ron Paul, 99% of the people here won't vote. Perry or Romney would be no better than 0bama.

Fuck the Republican party. If RP doesn't get the nom, I hope that it goes down in flames and is replaced by a party that represents the people, not the Rich and Powerful and Politically Connected.

Same goes for the Democrats and their socialist bullshit.
