I have a different view, one that most disagree with at first, but many come around. My view is that Jordan is the guy who decimated the game. Here' why:
Jordan was so dominant one on one that he spawned the isolation game as a successful strategy. Prior to Jordan, virtually every championship team was a team and couldn't make it with just a superstar and a surrounding cast. For decades, Boston won tons of championships without ever having a leading scorer. And the best teams of the 1980s - the Celtics and Lakers - were talented at all 5 positions. (Of note, Jordan never won a championship while Bird and Magic were in the league...it wasn't until he stepped into their void did Chicago win).
So look at the game now. The teams are built around 2-3 stars and a bunch of folks that just as well could be flipping burgers. It's a one-on-one isolation game (when it counts at the end). Load up the weak side and hope your guy is hot that night. It's the worst excuse for a sport that there is, and bears no resemblance to the college version.
So for all his iconic stature, Jordan to me is the guy who (inadvertantly) gave birth to the Carmellos, LeBrons and Kobes we have today. If it wasn't for the Spurs, there probably wouldn't be any class in the league at all.

You pretty much nailed it, except that you left out the Detroit Pistons teams that kept Jordan in check until his first title in 1991.
