Exactly. Previous Virginia's earthquake of 5.8 magnitude happened in 1897 which was a recovery year for the panic started in 1893 (see Wiki: Panic of 1893: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panic_of_1893).
Probably a coincidence, but who knows.

I would expect New York to be hit badly by a quake at some point in the future, and that is probably the near future. Believe there's a fault line through there ...besides, everyone should stay away from coastal regions in general

I like to base most of my inquiries under the assumption that the universe is chaos, and that homo sapien sapiens are not nearly as clever, powerful or highly evolved as they seem to think. Not kidding here, but our old policy was expiring and we added Earthquake insurance to the policy. I'm one of the few east coasters that have insurance.
We have it (in Northern Va). It's pretty cheap and we've had earthquakes here, so why not?
I live in Northern Baltimore County and my whole house shook. Felt like a helicopter was hovering on top of my house. Could not figure out what it was. Kept looking for a helicopter. Now I know what it was.

No big here, only felt like a 4.5 if were sitting closer to epicenter, like not sure if everything is really shaking or not. Been in West Coast 7.5 SF, and some Southern Cal quakes. Unusual this part of country though, for sure.

5.9 shook half the east coast? Are the feds behind that number?
I've heard the East Coast is predominately granite which amplifies the shock wavew of quakes unlike the sand/lime stone on the West Coast. Not a geologist so I'm not certain if that is true.
Yes, most earthquakes on the east coast are far deeper (3-15 miles) than those on the Pacific coast. We're also on a passive margin and situated over basement rock. The geology here is vastly different than California. As a result, we have less energetic quakes that are felt much farther away.
Two points:
1) The EQ was very shallow so that mean's more of the movement is going to affect aboveground structures.
2) The East has much fewer fault lines which means that the shock of the EQ will go much much further than say, California with all of it's fault lines. More fault lines dissipates the EQ across distance.
By way of comparison, when the Memphis EQ ripped in 1812 at 8.x it rang church bells in BOSTON.
