And so even the ground in Manhattan is shaking. Now... who is the lucky one to pull the short straw and check up on Indian Point? In other news, we are now long continental plates and short granite bedrock.

colorado had a 4.6 at 11:49 pm last night followed by a 5.3 at about 6am this morning, now this 5.9. I was at liss.org last night and earlier this morning watching what appeared to be a definite pattern of uniform seismic activity planet wide develop, as has been the case quite often over the last year or so. It looks like the entire earth is being rung like a bell. the question right now is are these main events or just pre-events? I have to admit to being mildly alarmed, should be an interesting next few days.

This will accelerate over time as the black hole's mass grows and will eventually lead to major, worldwide earthquakes and sink holes the size of major cities.

last week had a handful of 7.0+ in Vanuatu. north of NZ - after a day or so, some of the "monitors" downgraded the quakes to 5.0+ - there's been a lot of that "going back in to alter the facts" lately, and not only in the "markets". . . it's good to look at different sites for information now, in all areas.
Just reported that 2 nuclear reactors in VA were taken off-line as a precautionary measure.

Quite a few Baltimorons on the board. I live just North of the city. My house shook, things fell off of the walls, shelves etc. Everything rattling. Closing down the colleges, schools, etc. Minor fires reported, brick chimneys falling. etc. My first earthquake. Most folk here are not used to this ... goes back to 1886 for a larger quake. Saying it was felt from the Carolinas to Mass.
My cats are still in hiding.Scared the H out of them.
Cell phone use is problematic- many are not working. Land lines are. No major damage so far reported.

For about a day after 9/11, the cell phone system where I lived was massively overloaded and I don't live anywhere near NYC or DC.
People who don't have a wired connection to the world as a backup are fools.

Most folk don't understand the limited provisioning of 'channels' in a cell site nor grasp the concept of 'trunking' as it relates to assigning voice calls in a limited available resource like a 24 channel T-span (just to simplify things) ...
There is NO WAY each available cell phone subscriber is going to 'get a channel' to make a phone call if he and everyone else suddenly wants to make a call.

Living on the ring of fire, we want you to know this was not a "big one", but it does give you a small idea. Big would be big. Do buildings have a seismic retrofit requirement as we do in the west? Check for cracks if you are nearby the epicenter, and see about water line breaks.
Hope you don't get this regularly. You have to deal with DC already.
Sitting in a very large govt building right by the National Mall in DC, two very sharp shocks, could see the entire wall of windows opposite me do the shimmy. Everyone got up and got out in under a minute.
Right at the edge of major damage but not quite. Lot of inspections going on now, Metro subway running at 15 mph, all roads clogged.
Some interior home damage in DC/VA metro, a spire fell from National Cathedral, more significant but not major damage in Richmond.
North Anna plant lost power, had to be shut down manually (not normal), on diesel.
Probably some bad damage near the epicenter but no reports yet.
Correction to North Anna plant status: "North Anna's operators were preparing to manually shut down the units after the quake when the power station's operating system automatically powered down both units."

I felt it between my legs where my hand was....and it felt good. I am amazed that the people in Va felt it too.
The building North of Charlottesville that I was in shook violently for about 30 seconds. We are 30 miles from the epicenter. The shaking was not a big deal. All that was doing was making us look around and think, "WTF is that?" Then in the middle of the shaking, we were all jerked sideways a few inches. That's what got people's attention. After that happened, there was no doubt what the rest of the rumbling was around it. We had a conference call ongoing, and the people on the other end were shocked when we said, "Uh, we have to go. We are having an earthquake!" LOL
