Market Stoned Like It's 1999

Tyler Durden's picture

Presented with little comment but we thought, given the exuberance surrounding Facebook, ZNGA's rally, and FFN's double, that we would point out that the four-week average volume on the NYSE has dropped to levels not seen since, yes you guessed it, 1999.

OT: Yesterday we find the Endorse Liberty PAC gives almost a million to Ron Paul. The corrupt main street media are chomping at the bit for the deadline, to find the names to prove once and for all that Ron Paul has racist “fringe” supporter…but it’s not! It’s gay influential tech giant who first recognizes importance of Facebook in 2004 before many did. He’s visionary. He’s for liberty and freedom. He’s so influential that he is part of steering committee of Bilderburger! LOL! So what does fucked up corporate whore media do? They fucking freaked out now. Scared spineless bought and paid for media who hide the truth. Mr. Thiel doesn’t fit profile of their fucked up view of “Ron Paul supporter.”

Hey people, visionary Peter Thiel is a fucking Ron Paul supporter. Rumors that Ron Paul is little homophobic don’t matter, even a gay visionary recognizes that we need Ron Paul for this country. If networks won’t report, we have to spread the word. Ron Paul is not a fringe candidate.

Nope he's right. They want bread and circus. They simply don't care. They have been brainwashed over 70 years to believe that their leaders could never behave like what is really happening now. Tell 9 out of 10 people what's really going on and they will look at you like you are a crazy man off his meds. The simple fact is that they are still in the matrix and they do not want to get out. No amount of 'working harder' will change that. The only thing that will change that is when they are cold and hungry.

Start your own campaign. Here's example, send this to your email list.

You may think Ron Paul is a strange character or he has strange ideas, but find out why billionare visionary Peter Theil spends a million dollars to help him get elected. Peter Theil, who is gay, believes in freedom and liberty, he’s on Facebook’s board of directors, he was an early investor of Facebook in 2004 before others recognized its value.

Why does Bill Gross who co-founded PIMCO, who manages one of the world’s largest mutual funds tell us Ron Paul is only Republican who can fix economy?

Don't give The Bernank an ounce more credibility than he deserves in mapping future plans.

It only takes a quick trip back to 2007 or 2005, for that matter, to realize the basic, fundamental, incontrovertible truth that The Bernank's credibility is extraordinarily low, and that whatever semblance of credibility he has obtained has been done through a proxy financial media that's really gone to bat for him, on behalf of the Money Masters.

Most dark pool prints are reported to the consolidated tape in less than a second.  However, they are marked as distinct from NYSE trades.  Google "CTS Multicast Output Spec" and search it for "Trade Reporting Facility Identifier".  NYSE trades are marked with TRF=N, while most dark pool trades are marked with TRF=D (FINRA).

If this chart shows only NYSE TRF=N trades (as the title suggests), then it should illustrate the NYSE's diminishing market share (which it does).  Nasdaq, ECNs, and dark pools have cut deep into their business.  Still plenty of NYSE-listed shares trading... just not on the NYSE.

Must be all those buy and hold "investors".  Gotta figure out how to get them more panicked so that they dump all their shares and then buy them up again at a net loss + trading fees.  Oh wait, forgot, the Fed propped the market so hard that it's impossible to charge past a stupidly narrow range.  If you're not selling options, you're likely getting your ass kicked.

Social media is the Joneses on crack. It really keeps the public enamored with materialism. In doing so will push people waaaaaayyyyyy past the point of common sense. A bubble no doubt. But, the ramifications might express themselves elsewhere somehow. Seems to me social media is the way of the future... we are just the childhood phase where we hurt ourselves with it. Kind of like a kids playing with matches.

I think the opposite. I believe we are seeing the height of this phenomenon. There is a shift in the public mood that is happening very slowly. We are moving from optimism toward the pessimism end of the spectrum, collectively. This will continue and as it does, there will be a movement back toward privacy (as more people come to the realization that privacy actually does matter and is a right). This will be reflected in many areas of society. I think that in five years, the idea of telling the world where you are and what you're doing will strike people as insane, and they'll wonder what the hell they were thinking, with all their stupid ass "My cat just pooped on the kitchen table" posts.

Thu, 02/02/2012 - 17:17 | 2121291 centerline
centerline's picture

I think that social media will still be here and will be an integral part of our existence going forward.

At the same time, I total agree with you on your point about privacy.  It is truly insane how people have simply offered up so much information - some on a real-time basis!  This will change.  It is a social extreme for sure.

Social media will have to evolve to be more "private" in some ways, and anonymous in others.  Either way, the FB business model will crash.

I actually have family that announces what they are doing while away from home... basically announcing to the world when it would be a good time to loot their house!

Exactly! Right now, it seems that people have blinders on, and when they take them off, which they will, eventually, they're going to say, "What the hell was I thinking?" Personally, I go on FB to see what people are saying, and I might respond to someone's post, but I never post updates on myself, what I'm doing, what I'm having for dinner, etc. It's extremely narcissistic, and I don't think I'm so important that I need to announce to the world what I'm doing. It reminds me of when I look at pictures of myself from high school, wearing a fucking polyester leisure suit to the Saturday night dance. I wonder, why didn't someone say something? But then, everyone was doing it. I think people will look back on this the same way. I think this IPO will be the classic pump and dump.

Asking a medical question about a symptom = internet says you have a really bad disease and will probably die.

Getting involved in casual social media like FB = internet says to buy an iProduct or you are a loser and won't be happy and successful like everyone else who has figured out the secrets to life that continue to evade you.

Funny how this diverges from stock valuations.  One would think that if volume and price continued to be somewhat correlated that stocks should in fact be tanking.  But, some mysterious force is acting on the markets to cause this divergence.  How odd.

Social media is boring. Facebook is boring, Zynga games are boring.

It's not adding one iota of happiness to peoples lives. It just creates a happy smiley cult for them to stress even more trying to keep up a happy smiley persona to prove they're just as happy and smiley as the next guy.

There was little substance to the 1999 internet craze beyond the purely utilitarian aspects of online shopping.

Social media is a solitary experience. Facebook and Zynga are generating countless billions of man hours of lonliness, dressed up as some kind of social activity.

It is not social, it is a giant media-hyped scam to provide Ben with various helicopter outlets to drop fiat on useless geeks who in the end produce nothing but hot air.

OT, but I love the phrase "magically disappeared" in this bloomberg article on Deutsche today.

The European Banking Authority said Deutsche Bank still needed €3.2 billion in capital when it updated its view on the region’s banks in December, but according to CreditSights, that shortfall has “magically disappeared.” The bank reported its risk-weighted assets fell to €381 billion by Dec. 31, from €421 billion as of Sept. 30. CreditSights says the drop, which put Deutsche Bank’s Core Tier 1 capital ratio at 9.5%, above the EBA’s 9% June 2012 target, “illustrates the capacity of banks to improve capital ratios without raising new capital.”
