Massive $17 Trillion Hole Found In Obamacare

Tyler Durden's picture

Two years ago, when introducing then promptly enacting Obamacare, the president stated that healthcare law reform would not cost a penny over $1 trillion ($900 billion to be precise), and that it would not add ‘one dime’ to the debt. It appears that this estimate may have been slightly optimistic… by a factor of 1700%. Because coincident with the recent Supreme Court debacle, in which a constitutional law president may be about to find that his magnum opus law is, in fact, unconstitutional, someone actually read the whole thing cover to cover, instead of merely relying on the CBO’s, pardon Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs’, funding estimates. That someone is Republican Jeff Sessions who after actually running the numbers has uncovered that the true long-term funding gap is a mind-boggling $17 trillion, just a tad more than the original sub $1 trillion forecast. This latest revelation means that total underfunded US welfare liabilities: Medicare, Medicaid and social security now amount to $99 trillion! Add to this total US debt which in 2 months will be $16 trillion, and one can see why Japan, which is about to breach 1 quadrillion in total debt (yen, but who's counting), may want to start looking in the rearview mirror for up and comer competitors. And while Obama may have been taking creative license with a number that is greater than total US GDP, he was most certainly correct when saying that Obamacare would not add a penny to US debt. Because the second the US government comes to market to fund a true total debt/GDP ratio of 750%, it is game over, and the Fed will have its hands full selling Treasury puts every waking nanosecond to have any time left for the daily 3pm stock market ramp.

What is it that brought about this discovery of some inverse cash under the rug? The Daily Caller explains.

The hidden shortfall between new spending and new taxes was revealed just after Supreme Court justices grilled the law’s supporters about its compliance with the Constitution’s limits on government activity. If the court doesn’t strike down the law, it will force taxpayers find another $17 trillion to pay for the increased spending.

The $17 trillion in extra promises was revealed by an analysis of the law’s long-term requirements. The additional obligations, when combined with existing Medicare and Medicaid funding shortfalls, leaves taxpayers on the hook for an extra $82 trillion in health care obligations over the next 75 years.

Regular readers are well aware that when it comes to US insolvency, the underfunded American welfare state, whose obligations now amount to $100 trillion!, is the primary cause of this country's ultimate downfall. This latest revelation only makes it that much more certain, and likely, faster.

Currently, the Social Security system is $7 trillion in debt over the next 75 years, according to the Government Accountability Office.

Also, Medicare will eat up $38 trillion in future taxes, and Medicaid will consume another $2o trillion of the taxpayer’s wealth, according to estimates prepared by the actuarial office at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The short-term cost of the Obamacare law is $2.6 trillion, almost triple the $900 billion cost promised by Obama and his Democratic allies, said Sessions.

The extra $17 trillion gap was discovered by applying standard federal estimates and models to the law’s spending obligations, Sessions said.

For example, Session’s examination of the health care law’s “premium support” program shows a funding gap $12 billion wider that predicted.

The same review also showed the law added another $5 trillion in unfunded obligations for the Medicaid program.

Of course, that this "discovery" happened two years after the law was originally proposed and enacted merely once again confirms that other banana republics have nothing on the US, and that America continues to live in a state of sheer chaos when it comes to understanding that every use of funds must ultimately have a source as well.

Jeff Sessions' full presentation.

As a reminder this is what One trillion looks like.

...Now multiply by 17.

The Congress and Senate is full of sociopaths and psychopaths.

Every one of these asshole congresscritters that voted for a "$1 trillion" bill and it is really $17 Trillion, should be taken out and shot for four reasons:

1.)  They are stupid

2.)  They can't read

3.)  The can't do simple math

and

4.) they are a bunch of ignorant corrupt incorrigible fuckwads that cause humanity and American Citizens more problems (parabolic I might add) than they solve.  It would be best if they just fucking quite, or died.  Any way is good by me.

As opposed to believing the CBO, which probably has never gotten a long term projection right and has a track record of woefully underestimating the cost of government programs?

If the government is going to make a projection, do you think they are more likely to overestimate the cost of programs or underestimate?  If you can give me any examples of government social programs coming in under projected spending or even in line with projected spending Im certainly game to hear it.

Well we don't want Obamacare but something has to be done. My solution is to end all insurance and force hospitals to drop the insane $1500 bill for walking through the door.

We need doctors again, not medical revenue generators.

There aren't any doctors around me anymore, the urgent care facilities have all been absorbed so you must go to the ER for any small problem.

I cut my thumb fairly bad and needed a few stitches. $85 for the stitch job, $1500 for the ER, $500 for the doctor.

$17 trillion over how much time?  We already spend about $2.5 trillion a year on healthcare today. It isn't like Obamacare spending is brand-new, out-of-thin-air spending.

Big numbers like this make me suspicious.  SS being in debt $7 trillion over the next 75 years is a tenuous figure at best.  Raise the retirement age 2 years and it looks all different.  Think that won't happen during the next 75 years?  $58 trillion on Medicare and Medicaid in "future taxes?"  On a long enough timeline....

There are enough things wrong with Obamacare that making meaningless projections is kind of, well, meaningless.

Still, it makes the point well enough that the real problem with healthcare in the US isn't how we pay for it, but how much it costs.

Ridiculous of course..."besmirching a perfectly bad reputation" as well. "Travon Martin" meets "the end of the world as we know it." The fact of the matter is "Obamacare" as the other side of aisle likes to threaten us all with would be...but for Ms. Pelosi..."all about savings." Having said that anyone who doesn't see the need for a new plan has no grasp of reality. Currently the bulk of the American people are now uninsured (thanx to 2008.) This is DANGEROUS. Insofar as CARE is being provided...well, "perhaps full on Mind Martian"...anywho...CARE per dollar is what the goal is here. "Obamascare" is right up there with Mediscare. Solutions please! There is no lack of money on the table! I agree with that!

I've maintained from the very beginning... the PURPOSE of the health care legislation was to INCREASE debt... everything else was secondary.  With fear of sounding like a broken record... our monetary system is based on credit money that is loaned into existence with interest that begins to accumulate when that money is created.  The only way that the system can survive is for debt to be in a state of constant expansion.  If debt contracts you face cascading defaults and deflationary depression.  So the name of the game... find ways to increase debt.  It can be a housing bubble, leveraged corporate take-overs, parabolic student loans, frivolous wars, etc. etc. etc.  I thought cap and trade was was going to provide the vehicle for the next rung of ponzi economics, but they rammed through healthcare instead.  Just my two cents... I certainly could be wrong.

It's interesting how we view debt/money.  If the gov't is increasing debt, we are suspicious or concerned... but it corporate credit is increasing that is viewed as a good sign... businesses are expanding, banks are lending, etc.  And of course home ownership is the American dream.  But all of this debt; consumer, corporate and gov't is the same... it all represents how money is created/loaned into existence.  The system itself is agnostic... it doesn't care which lever generates the additional credit/debt/money... as long as the aggregate increases.

When the shit hit the fan in 2008, gov't spending went through the roof.  Now you can make all sorts of cases for "why".  But think about how things get done.  Why was so little energy spent in trying to use money wisely in the reinvestment act?  Because it didn't matter!  Debt needed to be created and money needed to be spent.  Same with healthcare.  Sloppily fudged together horseshit, primarily handouts to big insurance.

Go further back... the housing bubble was engineered to accelerate/re-inflate the larger debt bubble.  2008 would have happened in 2001/2002 if not for housing... can kicking in the ponzi scheme to end all ponzi schemes... the US dollar.

That's Jefferson Beauregard Sessions, The Turd.  Where was his abacus?  Same place it was when he voted against ending the sweetheard oil subsidies.

As to the unfunded social security and medicare, can you explain what I have been paying a total of 15.3% of my wages to for 45 years?

This is a very partisan article with little real information.  I know little Jeffy Sessions, and he cannot count, much less add and subtract.

I'm telling anyone with ears to hear, the healthcare industry is bankrupt.

It does this by reducing people to poverty because they acquire some illness or another (often curable, often not).  Those very same people then go on to acquire another illness, and another, until old age when they start to acquire alot.

But that time, they've run out of funds!  So then these costs are socialized onto everybody else (Medicare, higher insurance premiums), reducing everyone else to poverty!

Eventually, there is nobody left to "pay" and the whole thing goes bang, doctor's offices go bust, hospitals disappear.  We are right before the bang.

“But what kind of a world that will be? I think it will be a very nasty world. In spite of having gold and silver, that may not be enough to save you. They’re good things to have, but what we actually need to do is save our civilization and not go down in flames.

I think the first thing to do would be to insert silver coins into the monetary system. That would be a healthy thing to do. I was very happy to see Ron Paul pull out a silver coin. To me it’s like he was facing the vampire Ben Bernanke with a silver coin, instead of a silver bullet.”  "...whole scheme of paper is unworkable, then the world is going to go down in flames."

Maybe something behind the debt is the country's ultimate downfall?Debt is hypothetical. It is an imaginary number that is not only relative but also based on a monetary system that no longer exists. That is not the only instance of relative value. The definition of many financial terms today do more to obscure meaning than to reveal meaning. The attempt at world domination is creating a very unstable flux that will soon solidify one way or another. In any case the time to

One serious take for now:

lizzy,

No one I have ever met in the real world cares who Jeff Sessions is.  Perhaps this is important to you, but the "sheeple" do not care.

The Great Irony is that you and I hate on Jeff Sessions while the great unwashed do not care about him.

It's ironic in that caring about Jeff Sessions gets one no where.  It should but it does not.  I think we are the real losers in the grand scheme of things, no?

I don't hate Jeff Sessions.

I hate a system whereby Senators and Congresspeople don't represent the PEOPLE but are merely the puppets of their sponsors.

Critical thinking makes me look at who sponsors Senator Sessions. Then i look at his voting record. This man is NOT against massive deficit spending. He voted for TWO off balance sheets wars, and large large tax cuts for the rich.

The fact that he "found" this hole TWO years after the legislation was passed, and it was published on the Daily Caller, during an election year, makes one believe this is nothing but another GOP dude talking the agenda of his sponsors.

I hope your right about Sanders getting a say on ZH - he is the only true U.S. Senator that speaks directly for the people - eg. if not for Sanders and Paul pursuing the FOIA, we'd still be in the dark about the FED - having never been exposed to the under-handedness of Sire-Chairsatan, for his monetary treachery.

That said,... Sanders [Ind/Vt. U.S.Senator] is a 'huge advocate' for "Single-Payer" health insurance. Vermont has been implementing programs to coincide with the 'Affordable Care Act' when it begins in 2014. But, the state, and others have also been trying to circumvent the mandate for a more realistic approach knowing that most people in Vermont [certainly other small states] would find it extremely hard to pay for the 'forced-premiums'![*unconstutional !!!]

Ps. I've spent my summers & winters in Vermont in my family home since childbirth. [biased? -Yes!]

Ps2. I plan to be buried there, along with the proud "Green-Mountain-Boy's" [patriotic and proud american? - Yes!]

Ps3. Bernie Sanders,... like him or not, is a "Great American!" [ one of my contempories I refer to as a patriotic hero!]
