McCain Calls For US To Lead Effort To Begin Syrian Air Strikes

Tyler Durden's picture

Just a headline from AP for now:

  • Sen. McCain calls for US to lead 'international effort' to begin air strikes on Syria.

Looks like operation "Enduring Brent Crude Freedom" is about to commence.

From Foreign Policy:

Later today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, will become the first U.S. senator to publicly call for U.S. led air strikes to halt the violence and atrocities being committed by the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

"After a year of bloodshed, the crisis in Syria has reached a decisive moment," McCain will say Monday afternoon in a speech on the Senate floor, according to excerpts obtained in advance by The Cable.

"What opposition groups in Syria need most urgently is relief from Assad's tank and artillery sieges in many cities that are still contested. Homs is lost for now, but Idlib, and Hama, and Qusayr, and Deraa, and other cities in Syria could still be saved," McCain will say. "But time is running out. Assad's forces are on the march. Providing military assistance to the Free Syrian Army and other opposition groups is necessary, but at this late hour, that alone will not be sufficient to stop the slaughter and save innocent lives. The only realistic way to do so is with foreign airpower."

The Obama administration's stance thus far has been to clearly communicate that international military intervention is not on the table in Syria. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that the United States is willing to provide humanitarian assistance in Syria immediately... but only if Assad agrees to provide access to affected areas.

McCain, referring directly to the requests for more direct assistance from the Syrian National Council, the Free Syrian Army, and Local Coordinating Committees inside Syria, will call for the United States to lead an international effort to protect civilian population centers in northern Syria through airstrikes on Assad's forces.

"To be clear: This will require the United States to suppress enemy air defenses in at least part of the country," McCain will say. "The ultimate goal of airstrikes should be to establish and defend safe havens in Syria, especially in the north, in which opposition forces can organize and plan their political and military activities against Assad. These safe havens could serve as platforms for the delivery of humanitarian and military assistance -- including weapons and ammunition, body armor and other personal protective equipment, tactical intelligence, secure communications equipment, food and water, and medical supplies. These safe havens could also help the Free Syrian Army and other armed groups in Syria to train and organize themselves into more cohesive and effective military forces, likely with the assistance of foreign partners."

"...Rarely remarked upon in discussion of this kind is that the Israeli right's goals in the Middle East have long been public knowledge, promoted by Israeli and dual-citizenship Neocons for some time. In a 1982 article in the Israeli journal Kivunim, the journal of the Department of Information of the World Zionist Organization, Israeli scholar Oded Yinon, formerly attached to the Foreign Ministry, reiterates the old idea that Israel's best course for long-term safety, prosperity, and possible expansion lay in its neighbors being broken up into many weaker, squabbling states. Yinon envisioned Iraq broken into a Shiite south, a Sunni middle, and a Kurdish north, with other countries thereby destabilized along the same lines. Although the invasion of Iraq has been called an ongoing disaster for America, with troops unable to withdraw due to the threat of full-blown civil war, by another yardstick the invasion has been a resounding success. Sabrosky says that Iraq was never a threat to America, but it was certainly a threat to Israel, to the point of SCUD missiles already having been launched into Tel Aviv by Saddam during the first Gulf War.

With banks they proposed to solve the debt problems via dramatically increasing the debt and interest load = EPIC FAIL

With state internal conflicts they propose to solve a conflict that is none of their business via dramatically increasing the death and destruction via systematically destroying the country's ability to sustain itself = EPIC FAIL

What is really disturbing is that these arseholes always jump to bombing someone to solve a policical and social issue that actually can't be solved via bombs.

But the threshold to openly calling for the bombing of another country into oblivion as a supposedly serious political solution is drifting ever lower.

It is so much easier to just say, "bomb them", and you won't even be disregarded as a lunatic, by the MSM or military.

This insane behaviour has now become so 'normalised' by the MSM, to a point that US foreign policy is increasingly just bomb-shit.  And if you just want to bomb shit slowly then use a drone on a secret mission over someone else's Sovereign territory, and act like it wasn't you all along.

All the while pretending its a credible, viable and well-considered intelligent response and strategy, so they all talk like they care about those poor Syrians, and are everyone's Saviour and Guardian Angel.

With Saviours like these ...

If McCain gets his wish Tyler better have that deer in the headlights picture ready.. I love the way they have slowly inched their way into this confrontation in order to warm the Sheeple up to the event that is now clearly going to happen. I still don't know what they intend to do about Russia and China that have vowed to support Syria and Iran and warned that any military strike on either country would be a mistake. I guess when your ponzi scheme is on its last leg you become desperate to find other ways to shift the attention elsewhere. I got this really bad feeling that we are possibly weeks away from something big... I hope i'm wrong however there isn't many other scapegoats left for the CRONIES to use to try and buy some more time as Europe and most of the Western world has backed themselves into a corner and are pretty much toast. I believe that any confrontation will be a failed attempt to save the petro dollar which has recently been under fire and is starting to lose its grip on the globe...When this happens, it's game over...

Exactly what business does the USA have attacking Syria.  None.  None whatsoever.  We may as will try to justify attacking Darfur to stop the slaughter of Christians.  Or how about all those North Koreans who have been in prison camps for decades.  Surely there is a human interest in liberating those people.  Except of course, there is not payoff for our "ally" in the middle east.  So those problems can sit for decades.  Of course, there are plenty of other pricks like McCain lining up.  Like Huckabee.  Tools.  All of them.

The sad part is that a person with a minimum sense of morals and decency is forced to take sides on a subject where the options presented cannot be decided on based on the "lesser evil" criterion.

What a wonderful world where one who supports limited intervention based on solid moral grounds would automatically be strenghtening the case of oil hungry, blood thirsty military industrial banking complex and the zionists. While a person who is against intervention but the right of Syrian people to freedom, would side with crooked communist Soviets and heartless Chinese leaders that treat the souls of millions of people as a stick to draw a line in the sand of geopolitical influences. Or is it better to allow a dynasty of dictators to exterminate their own people just because it's a western conspiracy to take over the middle east.

Fuck it.

I second the exasperation and submit for consideration the question of whether America's taxes are best used for:

  1. Paying down debt;
  2. Investing in the future (e.g., charter schools, repairing a 50 year-old decaying infrastructure, etc.);
  3. Continuing to be the world's policeman via yet another armed conflict.

And no, these three options are not a false choice.  They're increasingly becoming 'either / or' as the rapacious Boomer generation, like a swarm of unending locusts, sucks on Medicare's and Medicaid's teats.

"Fuck it" is right..

The question is itself illegitimate and could only be formulated or answered by a statist.

End taxes and other forms of theft.

Assign the "debt" to whomever borrowed it, it certainly wasn't me.

Bring the troops home and stop killing them, they will be able to get jobs on the new tax-free booming economy which will also provide its own new infrastructure, because there will be no taxes.

I obviously picked a bad day to quit sniffing glue

I agree, let people invest in their own future where they can decide what is important to them, rather than letting the majority take their money and the precious years of life they must spend making it to squander on whatever latest thing the media has brainwashed them into thinking they need to solve. Stop asking people 2000 miles from California to pay for their choice not to make infrastructure or schools a priority.

Stop involving ourselves in everyone else business and treating our young like they are cannon fodder for the political class.

Prole - yep, you nailed it.  I'm a statist because I prefer to pay some taxes rather than build my own roads, educate others' kids so they can become doctors and (hopefully) tend to my medical needs in my old age, etc., etc.

Unfortunately, on this site, it's tough to discern whether you actually believe the drivel you've typed or you're just trying to elicit reactions.  Whatever.  I'm actually pissed at myself for taking a minute to respond... time I won't get back in my life.

Just remember that the 'humanitarian liberation' part is mere packaging to install a new batch of pro-Western puppet leaders who will be free to do whatever they like as long as they don't rock the petrodollar/ziofascism boat.

Maybe the populace would be fractionally better off after an 'intervention' than they are now... but tens of thousands will of them die and be maimed as 'collateral damage' in the process. What entitles McCain to make that calculation?

Yes, that's what this is, their best laid plans for a soft conquest have been met with artillery, so they must go for hard power instead, plus to try and get a rally out of the 'good-guy' rebels, who are getting wiped out, and a lot of non-combatants with them.  It's rather like when Gadaffi's army was entering Benghazi, and the UN SC was stampeded (with talk that half a million may be butchered) into accepting an agreement to provide air support and 'protection', etc.  Yeah, that went well.  A scree of butchery happened anyway simply because the west encouraged and fanned the slaughter at every turn.

If they want to fight it out, let them, it will very soon get settled.

I think a great many conversations are happening on these threads. Some of them are not PC. They need to be out there. We don't all need to agree, but we do need to have these conversations. It is boiling below the surface any way.
