McCain Calls For US To Lead Effort To Begin Syrian Air Strikes

Tyler Durden's picture

Just a headline from AP for now:

  • Sen. McCain calls for US to lead 'international effort' to begin air strikes on Syria.

Looks like operation "Enduring Brent Crude Freedom" is about to commence.

From Foreign Policy:

Later today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, will become the first U.S. senator to publicly call for U.S. led air strikes to halt the violence and atrocities being committed by the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

"After a year of bloodshed, the crisis in Syria has reached a decisive moment," McCain will say Monday afternoon in a speech on the Senate floor, according to excerpts obtained in advance by The Cable.

"What opposition groups in Syria need most urgently is relief from Assad's tank and artillery sieges in many cities that are still contested. Homs is lost for now, but Idlib, and Hama, and Qusayr, and Deraa, and other cities in Syria could still be saved," McCain will say. "But time is running out. Assad's forces are on the march. Providing military assistance to the Free Syrian Army and other opposition groups is necessary, but at this late hour, that alone will not be sufficient to stop the slaughter and save innocent lives. The only realistic way to do so is with foreign airpower."

The Obama administration's stance thus far has been to clearly communicate that international military intervention is not on the table in Syria. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that the United States is willing to provide humanitarian assistance in Syria immediately... but only if Assad agrees to provide access to affected areas.

McCain, referring directly to the requests for more direct assistance from the Syrian National Council, the Free Syrian Army, and Local Coordinating Committees inside Syria, will call for the United States to lead an international effort to protect civilian population centers in northern Syria through airstrikes on Assad's forces.

"To be clear: This will require the United States to suppress enemy air defenses in at least part of the country," McCain will say. "The ultimate goal of airstrikes should be to establish and defend safe havens in Syria, especially in the north, in which opposition forces can organize and plan their political and military activities against Assad. These safe havens could serve as platforms for the delivery of humanitarian and military assistance -- including weapons and ammunition, body armor and other personal protective equipment, tactical intelligence, secure communications equipment, food and water, and medical supplies. These safe havens could also help the Free Syrian Army and other armed groups in Syria to train and organize themselves into more cohesive and effective military forces, likely with the assistance of foreign partners."

For what its worth in terms of ability to write the language you actually beat the majority of native born users. The occasional issue with some of the technical points of grammar do nothing to obscure your meaning (no appostraphe in "your's" there), which unfortunately is more then I can say for many in the US.

Your English is far superior to my Belge. Errr Flem. Phlegm? Awwww... whatever kinda talk y'all talk over there. (joking here)

I will say though that the world needs a good derogatory perjorative for Belgians.

I am pretty sure that if they let him, he would gladly take the controls of any fighter and lead the bombing run himself.  He was not the son of dick-suckers like most of our elite class, he was the son of Admirals, and as such he accepted, and probably had to finagle and string-pull his way into a very dangerous and hard-to-get job of the era- combat fighterbomber pilot.

This while the other sons of elites or their fathers were vigourously pulling strings to keep them a MILLION MILES away from the battlefield. Busch2/Chainey/Gingrinch/Romnel the entire current press corpse propaganda team. The whole lot of them draft-dodging warmongers eager for blood as long as it isn't theirs.

McCain sought out combat duty so his courage cannot be questioned, honorable mention to Ron Paul and Rick what-his face also served when called.

I'm questioning his courage right now. Perhaps he had courage forty years ago. In his current role as AIPAC's subservient toady, he's showing less spine than a jellyfish.

There's a word for a person that works for a foreign power against the interests of his own nation: traitor.

what is going on in Syria is tragic and your over simplification of it is dumb. People are being massacred and anytime that happens it is tragic, regardless of who is doing the killing.   That being said,  MCCain should keep his mouth shut.   USA should stay out of this, although I'm not naive enough to think they are not already in it.

There is plenty of guilt to go around on this one on all sides.  Men can not live in peace because of greed, envy and selfishness.   No one class of people, or no ethnic group or no one religion has a monoply on those human tendencies, they share in them equally.

Yes, it is horrific.  Too bad the violence is being fueled by foreigners posing as Syrian "rebels."  Not that the Syrian government is GOOD, but the MSM is certainly branding them as the enemy and the rebels as "freedom fighters."  Most of the "bloodshed" committed by the Syrian government has been due to their RESPONSE to acts of terror being committed by the so-called "rebels."

My point is i have no clue how the US bombing anyone actually helps the horror that is currently Syria.

But hey, the US is ALWAYS the righteous party in these situations right?

In terms of rampant military action, Obama is not the lesser of two evils.   His actions in Libya amounts to an undeclared war.  He has accepted bush's actions to combat terrorism and added more 4th amendment violations.    Despite broad proclamations of ending wars, shit is still bad over there and we still have a presence there.

I just wish Ron Paul moderated his foreign policy statements so that he would seem more electable to those worried about Iran.   Fucking pisses me off to no end that we will get more of the same no matter who is elected.

Syria's oil production is about 380K bpd.  Not insignificiant.

They get that oil to market via pipeline routes to the Med.  That pipeline also is intended to route Iraq oil that comes from south of the Kurdish regions.  Iraq oil production is constrained by infrastructure, in addition to all else, so Syrian routing matters.

Do you notice how repubicans are against anything to help the American People but are willing to start a war anytime and never once say how they are going to pay for it. The arrogance and stupidity is mind numbing in those jagoffs.

On the weekend, Beijing laid out its stance on Syria in a six-point statement that warned other powers not to use humanitarian aid for Syria to "interfere" there, and urged Assad's government and other warring sides to "immediately, fully, and unconditionally" stop fighting. The comments appeared to be directed at Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Arab monarchies that have openly declared their intent to arm rebels fighting the regime, and plunge the country into civil war.

Apparently the only sanity coming out in the world is from China.  I guess they learned something about Imperialism when the British set their culture back 200 years by the importation of opium, and the USA backed the farm boy ignoramus Mao, whose first decision was to annihilate the intellectual class, which unfortunately included doctors, engineers and teachers.  Ooops. There goes another 200 years.  Nice job, illumaniti imperialists.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal has used a rare televised news conference to say Syrians have a right to take up arms and defend themselves. He said the Syrian regime "is not wanted by the people" and is "imposing itself by force." Faisal also said "Russia and others" should advise the Syrian government to "stop the killings."

Saudi say arm and bomb Syria + Shumer says print more oil + GCC|NATO want Yemen routes and regime change = deal

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal on Sunday urged Moscow to “advise” its ally Syria to stop its deadly crackdown against dissent. “Unfortunately, international efforts have failed and we have not seen results to stop the bloodshed and massacres in Syria,” he told a news conference in the Saudi capital.

Russia will meet with foreign ministers of Arab states to discuss the Syria crisis in Cairo on March 10, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday.

UK jounalists captured in Libya for spying (recall the wounded Syria journalists – or is it  propogandists?) while French troops captured in Syria (redux of the UK SBS in Libya).

And on the Eastern (Africa) front, there is this...

Six Chinese were killed and one was missing after Sunday's ammunition depot explosions in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo, according to the Chinese embassy here on Sunday night. The victims belonged to the Beijing Construction Engineering Group in the Central African country, where about 140 Chinese workers of the group were at the construction site when the blasts went off. Officials in Brazzaville urged calm, saying the blasts were an accident and did not mean there was a coup d'etat or a mutiny under way. Recall, US Special forces recently deployed to Congo to combat the Lord’s Resistance Army

McCain didnt set off a missile on his aircraft carrier that killed 20 guys, this is pure stupidity. He did get hit with one while waiting to take off which was triggered by another pilot and caused major casualties, but that wasnt him. His plane got blown up while he was just sitting in his cockpit.

There is so much to criticize him for that is legitimate, no need to lie.

Here's the "offical" account of what supposedly happenedon the USS Forrestal in 1967:

"At about 1050 (local time) on 29 July, while preparations for the second strike of the day were being made, an unguided 5.0 in (127.0 mm) Mk-32 "Zuni" rocket, one of four contained in a LAU-10 underwing rocket pod mounted on an F-4B Phantom II, was accidentally fired due to an electrical power surge . . ."

McCain was on deck at the time in the area where the "accidental" discharge occured.  I have read on more than one blog that those that were there point fingers at McCain but he was absolved of all responsiblity due to his father's connections in the Navy.
