McCain Calls For US To Lead Effort To Begin Syrian Air Strikes

Tyler Durden's picture

Just a headline from AP for now:

  • Sen. McCain calls for US to lead 'international effort' to begin air strikes on Syria.

Looks like operation "Enduring Brent Crude Freedom" is about to commence.

From Foreign Policy:

Later today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, will become the first U.S. senator to publicly call for U.S. led air strikes to halt the violence and atrocities being committed by the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

"After a year of bloodshed, the crisis in Syria has reached a decisive moment," McCain will say Monday afternoon in a speech on the Senate floor, according to excerpts obtained in advance by The Cable.

"What opposition groups in Syria need most urgently is relief from Assad's tank and artillery sieges in many cities that are still contested. Homs is lost for now, but Idlib, and Hama, and Qusayr, and Deraa, and other cities in Syria could still be saved," McCain will say. "But time is running out. Assad's forces are on the march. Providing military assistance to the Free Syrian Army and other opposition groups is necessary, but at this late hour, that alone will not be sufficient to stop the slaughter and save innocent lives. The only realistic way to do so is with foreign airpower."

The Obama administration's stance thus far has been to clearly communicate that international military intervention is not on the table in Syria. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that the United States is willing to provide humanitarian assistance in Syria immediately... but only if Assad agrees to provide access to affected areas.

McCain, referring directly to the requests for more direct assistance from the Syrian National Council, the Free Syrian Army, and Local Coordinating Committees inside Syria, will call for the United States to lead an international effort to protect civilian population centers in northern Syria through airstrikes on Assad's forces.

"To be clear: This will require the United States to suppress enemy air defenses in at least part of the country," McCain will say. "The ultimate goal of airstrikes should be to establish and defend safe havens in Syria, especially in the north, in which opposition forces can organize and plan their political and military activities against Assad. These safe havens could serve as platforms for the delivery of humanitarian and military assistance -- including weapons and ammunition, body armor and other personal protective equipment, tactical intelligence, secure communications equipment, food and water, and medical supplies. These safe havens could also help the Free Syrian Army and other armed groups in Syria to train and organize themselves into more cohesive and effective military forces, likely with the assistance of foreign partners."

Attempting to end violence with violence is like trying to solve a debt crisis by borrowing (printing) more money.

Not only do I agree that McCain and Graham should be dropped with the first sortie, I insist!

There once was an a$$hole, McCain

Who had to bail out of his plane,

But when caught by the Gook

He became such a kook,

That he's now certifiably insane.

And guess who's docked in Syrian ports right now? Let the games begin, this should kick off the Iran thing also in one fell swoop.

We need Syria before Iran for some reason, that was their intentional plan all along.

Smart guy. sarc/

the world [with a few exceptions - fill in the blanks __ __ ] has taken up the american constitution with all its warts, wrinkles, and age spots, and has embraced it,... and, as for america - it has taken up with the repressive fascist, communistic, and totalitarianism doctrines we once held so much disdain for with open arms

He's a control freak.  Note how he says if we don't get involved, we won't be able to control the outcome.  That's McCain's biggest fear most likely.

Does he realize his queen's cronies are running the show? This foreign insurgency war is being run from London.   As much of a piece of shit Assad is, it does the world no good to get rid of one piece of shit, and replace it with a bankster controlled piece of shit, and kill a few hundred thousand or million to get there.  Especially when the whole thing started as a planned insurgency from London, thus whatever Assad is doing is battling foreign fighters (equipped and funded) by TPTB.

The banksters promise them a better life, just follow them.  You'll get a better deal....and just when has a bankster actually delivered this?

Such insurgencies have been done time and time again throughout history.  The most recognizable form of this for us Americans is what happened with the mujahadeen in Afghanistan aka Al Qeada.   Can the banksters grow Opium in Syria as well as they can in Afghanistan? Probably not.  But maybe if everyone can just believe they'll be better off, they will be.  It's all about confidence.  Or so the idiots think.

Sure there are bigger reasons for this, and most of them probably involve Iran.

McCain is a piece of shit.  He'll be reelected with ease.  Just like he always is.  The average voter in Arizona, like everywhere else is fucking incompetent.  They don't know shit. They don't seek to know shit.  The Arizona Republic is called 'the rag' (you know because it's cheap paper for a rag).    Much like the rest of the country there is a religion (whose control over their members is stronger than most other religions in other areas) that consistently directs it's congregation to vote on party or social lines.   Sophistry is the drink of choice here like everywhere else in America.  The state is so one party ruled, I think there is more choice in China.  That's not to say that having more democrats with all the bullshit with them would make things demonstrably better.  It just means you will rarely challenge a candidate is such a one sided state politically, thus the Senate in America will be with McCain until his geriatric ass decides to quit.  The only thing that can change this? An absolute change from our foreign economic system as a means to shock people back into thinking again.  Or absolute collapse.  Besides he's already elected through 2016, so he already might have run his last election as he'll be 80 in 2016.  So he might be free to follow whatever senile desire he wishes as an unrecognized lame duck.  But then again, that might in effect be no different than how he acted since Bush whooped him.

McCain is a national WAR hero.  I will salute the day the old bastard finally kicks the bucket.  Until then he is what he is -- a Zionist owned slimey MIC WAR pig that has violated the Constitution so many times, that IMO he should legally be prosecuted, tried, and IMO would probably be swinging by his neck from the rotunda ceiling in Congress.  Screw McCain (and Lieberman).

I'm pretty sure there hasn't been a war that McCain hasn't championed. WTF is wrong with that dude? Thankfully, we got the Nobel Peace Prize winner as prez instead of his neocon ass. Just think of all the untold thousands who would have been killed under a McCain presidency. We dodged a bullet there, didn't we? The world should thank us for choosing so smartly instead of cajoling us to apologize for bringing peace and democracy to Afghanistan. Ungrateful bastards...

You know it might have been slightly a blessing that Obama was elected over McCain. McCain would have probably spent just as much, but he would have been in twice as many wars. We would still be fully in Iraq. He would have probably doubled the surge that Obama enacted in Afganistan. He would have put a full force in Lybia. He would have intervened in Egypt. He would have been at war with Iran when the protesting started. The draft would have been enacted to support all the wars. I am not saying Obama was a good choice either, but when it comes to wars he was the lesser of two evils. Obama is not good enough either. The only statesmen that would have done the right thing in foreign policy is Ron Paul. Hopefully, America wakes up in time before it is too late.

All of the ingredients for an election year war are present.  Barry Soetero has seen the history and knows that no President has ever lost re-election during a war.

Today Barry changed the site of the May G8 meeting to Camp David from Chicago.  He expects to be fighting by then and the last time there was a major war protest in Chicago, 9 years later it cost the City $6 million to settle - http://www.infowars.com/chicago-pays-out-6-2-million-to-settle-false-arr....

Barry knows that violent anti-war protests in HIS Highness' hood would be a major embarassment during an election year.

Jackass McCain is at it again. In the 1990's he called for and then rejoiced at the bombing of Serbian churches, schools, market places, bridges, etc, in Serbia, for a non-existant genocide. What a low-life jerk.
