Mitt Romney Releases 2011 Tax Filing

Tyler Durden's picture

Everyone has been desperately waiting for this. At 3:00 pm it will be publicly released. Hopefully, shortly thereafter we can proceed with the discussion of important things such as the complete economic collapse of not only America, but the entire world (which is apparently now hooked into voting for Obama as disclosed earlier). For those strapped for time here is the summary: Romneys 2011 tax rate 14.1%, Charity donations: 30%; Obamas tax rate: 20.5%, Charity donations: 22%. And going back, "Over the entire 20-year period, the average annual effective federal tax rate was 20.20%."

From Romney's website:

This morning, Gov. and Mrs. Romney filed their 2011 tax return with the IRS. At 3:00pm today, the Romney for President campaign will be posting the 2011 return online.

The complete 2011 tax return, with full schedules, statements, and attachments, will be made available with all other previously-disclosed information at

Also posted will be a notarized letter from the Romneys’ tax preparer, PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP (PWC), giving a summary of tax rates from the Romneys’ tax returns for the 20-year period of 1990-2009.

In advance of the posting of these new documents, I wanted to provide some top-line details.

Regarding the newly-filed 2011 Tax Return:

  • In 2011, the Romneys paid $1,935,708 in taxes on $13,696,951 in mostly investment income.
  • The Romneys’ effective tax rate for 2011 was 14.1%.
  • The Romneys donated $4,020,772 to charity in 2011, amounting to nearly 30% of their income.
  • The Romneys claimed a deduction for $2.25 million of those charitable contributions.
  • The Romneys’ generous charitable donations in 2011 would have significantly reduced their tax obligation for the year. The Romneys thus limited their deduction of charitable contributions to conform to the Governor's statement in August, based upon the January estimate of income, that he paid at least 13% in income taxes in each of the last 10 years.

As with the 2010 tax return, the 2011 tax return will appear as four separate documents. It includes Governor and Mrs. Romney's Form 1040 as well as three underlying Massachusetts trusts detailing the sources of their income. Those are The W. Mitt Romney Blind Trust, The Ann D. Romney Blind Trust, and The Romney Family Trust.

The investments within the trusts are managed on a blind basis by me, the trustee. I have sole responsibility for making, holding and disposing of the investments.

Regarding the PWC letter covering the Romneys’ tax filings over 20 years, from 1990 – 2009:

  • In each year during the entire 20-year period, the Romneys owed both state and federal income taxes.
  • Over the entire 20-year period, the average annual effective federal tax rate was 20.20%.
  • Over the entire 20-year period, the lowest annual effective federal personal tax rate was 13.66%.
  • Over the entire 20-year period, the Romneys gave to charity an average of 13.45% of their adjusted gross income.
  • Over the entire 20-year period, the total federal and state taxes owed plus the total charitable donations deducted represented 38.49% of total AGI.

During the 20-year period covered by the PWC letter, Gov. and Mrs. Romney paid 100 percent of the taxes that they owed.

Finally, in addition to new documents related to tax filings, the campaign will also be posting on the same website physician letters for both Gov. Romney and Rep. Ryan, making public their current state of health.

After you have reviewed all of the newly-posted documents, you may have further questions. The campaign asks that you direct them to an e-mail account set up for that purpose. That e-mail address is returns @

Obama's poll #'s are skewed to hell.

He is going to lose.

The stats they are using are only taking into account the pattern for '08.

There is / was a study done by a  well known College group, using all the variables, and (they have predicted the winner EVERYTIME,they have done it), and they concluded Romney-ulus will win, walking away.

Undecideds ALWAYS go with the challenger, and this time the out of work,no chance in hell of getting a decent one, the youth vote damn sure won't be with O.

The historical election of a semi Black, is now History.

Based on job perfomance and the economy, his grade is an "F".

Either way, Romney is inheriting Barry's tenure this time, and HIS results.A deathbed hospice watch.

The time for blaming Bush for aids/HimRoids/Swine Flu/Ebola,etc is over.

In the 2008 campaign Mitt released all his returns, no problem. Then radio silence about 2009 and 2010; now he releases 2011.

My guess is he was caught in the 2009 IRS amnesty program for tax cheats in Switzerland and Caymans. Paid a big fine to avoid prosecution. The only criminals we like to elect are the unprosecuted ones so Mitt bit the bullet and paid up to avoid a perp walk.

This no longer matters. Anyone on the smart side of the bell curve has already moved on to pricing in policy outcomes in Obama's 2nd term, as the GOP comes to the negotiating table. Fuck Mitt Romney. What matters now are the directions of gold, forex, US exports (growth or decline), and oil prices. Compared to what's coming in China's economy and mid-East tensions, the failed career of Mitt Romney is like a tiny speck. By Christmas, you will no longer hear of Mitt Romney.

Just another loophole. Many churches are used to launder tax money. Give 30% of your income for "charity" to a church, have the church turn around and "spend" most of it on you while keeping a small cut. Everyone wins except for the poor suckers too dumb or naive to realize how it works.

It's the oldest tax loophole since the beginning of the income tax. If anyone doesn't understand how it works, I have a game called Three-card Monte to play with you.

Some people become "preachers" to cut out the middle man! All you do is run it through your "church" account and back again. Obviously Romney can't do that since he's high profile.

reminds of the time my dad had a house built outside of phoenix az. the contractor was a mormon who tried to slip the tithe for LDS church into the final billing. some where on the invoice was a line for LDS services for $20,000.00 on a $200,000 house. well this guy must have thought my dad was from out of state. well he would be wrong, my dad grew up in a good little mormon town in arizona and knew right away what LDS stood for. needless to say dad paid only $180,000 for a $200,000 home. i must point out that the contractor did an excellant job on building the house. my dad chuckled for many years about that, he would say all the guy had to do was use some contractor mumbo jumbo and my dad would never have known.

Fri, 09/21/2012 - 15:10 | 2818980 Cathartes Aura

you could start here,

4.  At this point, the reader needs to understand that the Mormon religion had actively been involved in armed conflict with the United States for 27-years between 1830 and 1857 (Missouri War, Illinois War and Utah War). Consequently, in order to gain Statehood, they needed to cease their armed and violent confrontation with the United States Government (who they despise) and appear to be "good citizens", which they did. However, due to the many generations of Mormons who still hated America, had fought armed wars with America and who had pledged the "Mormon Oath of Vengeance Against America", this struggle needed to be taken "underground", so that the newly pacified Mormons could "become hidden" and begin their charade of looking like staunch supporters of the Constitution and "good citizens", even though they secretly despised America.

it's juicy.  but there are other places too, should you decide it's worth your time to learn. . .

as to the "wow, charitable contributions! how cool" - we all know that "charities and foundations" is how the uber-wealthy launder their monies into their pet projects, don't we?

don't we???

There are plenty of reasons to criticize Mittens, but Bain is not one of them.  That firm, and many like it, often save far more jobs than destroy because their goal is to put companies on a path of sustainable growth.

...their goal is to put companies on a path of sustainable growth.

Well, the goal is to make money, actually, but sometimes a "sustainable growth" strategy is the only effective way to do that.

Let's not forget the priorities, though.  Bain doesn't exist to HELP the companies it buys.  It's not a charity.

What Mitt did at Bain is somehow the worst fucking thing in the world yet fucking Jon Corzine stole a couple of billion a year ago, straight up fucking stole it, and no one on the Dems has a problem with it.

Mitt and the rest of the rich bastards are paying exactly what the IRS forces them to do because if they didn't the IRS would kick down their doors.  The Dems had complete control for 2 years and didn't pass one law that outlawed what Bain does or close any fucking loopholes.

BTW, I hate the repubs but the Dems busted this guy's ass for months about releasing the tax records and now that they are out, they are beside themselves.  Be careful what you wish for.

Delusional Harry Reid was saying how Scott Brown was looking for an excuse to not debate Liz "high cheeks" Warren.  We'll next time Harry might want to keep the Senate in session because Scott Brown crushed her last night.  As it turns out she defended Travellers Insurance against some liitle people that were suffering from asbestos poisoning.  Of course she did it for legal reasons that are too complicated for the little people to understand so she won't bother explaining it.

Mitts 'n' Bain have a long history of supporting that great amrkn corporation, Monsanto,

Though Mitt Romney has been campaigning for president since 2006, it’s alarming how little is known about critical chapters of his business biography. Nothing spells that out more clearly than his ties to Monsanto—the current target of a mid-September Occupy nationwide action—whose dark history features scandals involving PCBs, Agent Orange, bovine growth hormone, NutraSweet, IUD, genetically modified (GM) seed and herbicides, reaching back to the 1970s and ’80s. That’s when Monsanto was the largest consulting client of Romney’s employer, Bain & Company, and when Romney helped move Monsanto from chemical colossus to genetic giant, trading one set of environmental controversies for another.

  • The Romneys donated $4,020,772 to charity in 2011, amounting to nearly 30% of their income.
  • The Romneys claimed a deduction for $2.25 million of those charitable contributions.

Excellent example of a "smart" businessman, ensuring that everything is accounted fo... WAIT!  WTF?! Why didn't they claim all $4,020,772?  If it's not on the tax filing then how would we know what the real amount is/was?  Perhaps a bit of liberty with the word "charity" here, as in maybe political contributions?

The way semantics are toyed with I supposed that someone hiring a "hit" on their spouse could say it was a charitable contribution to the hit-man... (but wouldn't file it on their tax return)

Take out this year's contribution from the average, and the number is closer to 10%, which is the obligatory tithing to LDS.

Looks like they were much more generous in this, an election year. Hmm, I wonnder if Mitt has given any thought to his public image and whatnot.

The definition of charity is: the voluntary giving of help, typically money, to those in need.  Charity should help support those that are needy and cannot adequately help themselves, not enable the establishment and maintenance of a (very rich) cult.

From the campaign website:

Mitt Romney's donations provided low-cost plaid knickers to disadvantaged country club members, like Herbert Walker Van Dunk IV:

Well, the family got on the wrong end of a revolution in Mozambique, and we had to sell one of the uranium mine properties under duress.  I was in a shocking state of affairs.  My nerves were so bad that one day I packed my chinchilla-tongue gym bag with a pair of silk corduroy Indian clam-diggers and went off to the club.  I almost had to shift the Ferrari into third gear when I realized!

Gratefully, because of the generous pro club that Mitt Romney's charity installed at the club, just beyond the fountain, I purchased clothes suitable at a reasonable price and didn't have to cancel my civet-sandwich with the Japanese PM.

Thanks, Mitt!"
