A Modern Day Worker Revolt

Tyler Durden's picture

In a stunning and shocking turn of events at Lonmin's Marikana platinum mine in South Africa, Reuters shows this extremely graphic clip of police opening fire on striking miners. A Reuters cameraman says he saw at least seven bodies after the shooting, which occurred when police laying out barricades of barbed wire were outflanked by some of an estimated 3,000 miners massed on a rocky outcrop near the mine, northwest of Johannesburg. Marx is not dead. In fact, far from it.

and Via Bloomberg BusinessWeek:

Lonmin Plc (LMI) slumped in London trading after saying Chief Executive Officer Ian Farmer was hospitalized with an illness and it may miss output goals following a violent strike. South African press photographs showed at least 10 people dead today as police opened fire on armed miners.

A six-day work stoppage at Lonmin’s Marikana operations in South Africa’s North West province has resulted in rioting, and fatalities rose today as police moved in to disperse protesters, Johannesburg’s eNews channel reported. Lonmin also issued a statement saying Farmer had a “serious illness” and Chairman Roger Phillimore will take charge of the executive committee.

Farmer’s hospitalization gives Lonmin “a lot of problems,” Carole Ferguson, an analyst at Fairfax IS Ltd., said by telephone from London. Farmer has a “hands-on role” where the company has its operations, she said.

Lonmin, the third-biggest platinum miner, has lost metals output equivalent to 15,000 ounces of platinum at Marikana since rock-drill operators downed tools on Aug. 10, the Johannesburg- based company said in a separate statement. The workers, many of whom have camped out near the site, have been issued with an ultimatum to return by tomorrow or face dismissal, it said.

How does that manifest itself? What group of workers do you picture striking and what part of the govt comes in firing. Not saying it couldn't happen... I'm curious how you see it unfolding.

Sure is a good thing those striking miners had the Second Amendment to back them up.  They couldn't have won without it.  Oh wait ... They got crushed in spite of the Second Amendment.  Imagine that.

Personally I think it will be the poor who are put down. When the welfare checks stop coming because the system blows up the poor are going to be hurt the worst. That is who the wealthiest will need protection from.

One possible scenario I see unfolding is riots over race. The deliberate race-baiting by many officials and the one sided reporting of white on black verses black on white violence will eventually come to critical mass. Think Rodney King on steroids.

The easiest way to disarm a population is to have them shoot each other, then when there are significant numbers of dead or dying, come in with martial law and sweep for firearms. The JHP rounds are for when it's required or even desired to be up close and personal. Again, just IMHO.

Actually, it makes no sense. If you have crowd control, riots, etc, you want shotgun and rifle rounds. These buys are by people who watched the Matix too much, hollow points are close range rounds only. I think someone is upping ammo buys to push the price up for everyone else. Buy .223, 12 guage rounds, or 5.66 rounds in the quantity, and their serious. It's like the .357 rounds they bought, who the fuck do they think they are, Dirty Harry? This won't come to America, people in America can shoot back.... with rifles. Pistols are for fighting your way back to the rifle.

I think you've read too much and experienced too little.

By the way, Dirty Harry used a .44 Magnum, not a .357 Magnum, and the government purchases of "357" are actually 357 SIG, a totally different cartridge used in semiauto pistols, not revolvers.

If they were trying to up the price, they would be clearing out Walmarts of practice ammo and banning online sales, not placing direct orders for JHP ammo made by one single company.

That would never happen in the good old U.S.S.A... the politicians are doing everything in their power to protect our gun rights. Hell I heard  homeland security even bought a little over a billion rounds of hollow point ammo to "disburse"amongst the people.

Thu, 08/16/2012 - 16:02 | 2711981 i-dog

I'm guessing (with no technical knowledge at all) that those hollow-point rounds would be useful for 3AM house-to-house double-tapping of "dissidents" (ie. gold owners, gun owners, TPs, OWCs, ZHs, etc) in an overnight nationwide sweep by the combined forces of military, police, TSA, DHS, etc, etc.

Thoughts from the ammo experts?

There are truly some ignorant statements on here.  "Don't go to work at the mines", "Peaceful protests"???  These are modern day slaves.  They need to work to survive and they need to squeeze the man in order to do so.  You will see more and more of this as food prices continue to rise all due to lack of infrastructure.  This video really makes the monarch and financial oligarchs in London seem desperate.

Zambia Drops Case of Shooting by Chinese Mine Bosses

http://www.minesandcommunities.org/article.php?a=10830

By Barry Bearak

New York Times

4 April 2011

JOHANNESBURG - In what could be a politically explosive decision, prosecutors in Zambia have decided not to pursue a case against two Chinese supervisors who shot 13 coal miners last year during a wage protest, the managers' lawyer said Monday.

The episode, which occurred at the Chinese-owned Collum Coal Mine on Oct. 15, was viewed as an outrage by many Zambians who resent the enormous economic influence China has over their country.

At the time, the government said the shootings, none of which were fatal, would be vigorously investigated. Prosecutors arrested the two Chinese supervisors - Xiao Lishan and Wu Jiuhua - and charged them with attempted murder, but many civic leaders predicted a whitewash.

Chinese investment in Zambia amounts to more than $1 billion a year, according to the government of the impoverished but mineral-rich country in southern Africa. Most new construction involves Chinese-run companies...................

Yeah, zero sympathy for the dead. They charged dozens and dozens of police with their guns raised and aimed at them - what other possible scenario could have played out? The union chose violence, it will be met with violence. Sometimes throughout history that works to get what the unions want, but not without sacrificing a few union members here and there - as long as they feel it is worth it, then I feel it is their choice and have no sympathy either way. If you're going to attack an armed force and expect to survive AND win, leave the flags at home and bring guns next time.

Mad Max's picture

Let me preface my comment by stating that this obviously was a massacre.

However, what is the back story?  Were the miners who charged the police armed?  Had there been violence already in this strike?

Some of you write as if it's all peace and love.  Even in the USA, in Detroit and its surroundings, unions often used severe violence to get their way.  It was kept quiet, but for example, auto dealers that opened on Saturdays were, at one time, firebombed in addition to being blacklisted.  Mining towns throughout the US had repeated violence for more than a century, and even today someone who protests coal mining in West Virginia is risking their health if not their life (ironically, at risk from BOTH the miners and the mine owners).

While I'm not aware of S. Africa caring about dealership hours, it is an incredibly violent and scary place, far beyond what most people in the US are used to (including most people in Detroit).  A response that's excessive in a more peaceful society might be essential in a more violent society.

If I were one of the cops I would have been scared shitless to see 3,000 angry miners coming at me, probably would have pulled the trigger too.

I'm not saying it is right.

The bigger question to ask is who put the miners and the police in that situation where tragedy occurred?

Why are the miners striking and why are the police there confronting them?

What government/corporate collusion brought about this human tragedy?

Reuters said they were armed with machetes and sticks. The police were outflanked by 3,000 strikers.  It appears the strikers pushed forward, charged if you will.  What should the police do? Wait to do hand to hand combat and strip the machetes?  400 strikers vs 40 for 50 cops?  Sad to say it occurs, but global protocol says use lethal force, European Human Rights commision approved and certified.  You don't sign up to be a martyr in most police forces.

He seems to know it and almost ducks for cover with the officers shooting behind him.

Bingo. The strikers shut down production, resulting in a loss of 15000 oz of platinum production to date.  And of course lost production is also lost tax revenue, so government has a stake in this. The strikers are armed to prevent the mine owners from having them removed. Now the mine is about to replace them, and my guess is that the barracades being erected by the police are to allow production to commence and for access to production by new hires, something the strikers see as the last straw. I assume that the strikers were pereturbed enough at that development to charge the police in a last-ditch effort to stop the barracade.

The point of a strike should be to underscore to management the value of each individual worker in solidarity with the group; that the one is irreplaceable because all are irreplaceable (within a reasonable time frame). Armed strikers are mere extortionists and highway robbers. Anyone can get anything from anybody with enough force, and get shot at by the cops for their trouble.

40-50 defenders with full auto weapons and vehicles against 3000 miners. That kind of math works out for me to be a potential massacre.

stunned, shocked, where? new empire same as the old...

Home Economics, Space Travel, Currency, & Addiction

So, (can I do that?) the anxious black hole center of gravity, which is externally adjusted, to keep time, determines the orbital structure…

If you have been paying attention, you now see the empire price fulcrum. You have the speculative price of an auto and the supply side price, what is the demand side price?

Looking at all levels of government finance, what does the demand side price of travel tell you about how far government must contract as a % of GDP to re-boot the economy? What is the effect of delay?

Can economic ignition be directed from the global, federal, or state level? What must communities do? Can it be done under present constitutional order? What must be done with non-performing capital?

What do the birds and bees do? What is nature telling you? How does the electron appear in many places at the same time? Why does the cat have multiple lives? What is space travel? How do you orbit a vehicle? What is currency?

Empire labels are designed to misdirect, ac into dc, and are employed by dc robots. If a robot calls you a slut, are you a slut? Choose your own course, to adjust your distance, as you glide by.

If you look back through the threads, you will see that the majority response to my input has been some kind of irrational empire label, with traces of cogent response, and those that followed my investment advice made substantial returns, in a time when the objective was to lose less than others, as the circles of idle gossip collapsed from below.

Look at the boxes from the outside in and the inside out. The choice to be a robot is valid, Historically. The central bankers have trapped themselves in gold, again.

Where are the fundamentals of human choice on the pendulum swing? Is it moving in the direction of quality or quantity? What is happening at the margin?

The addicted robots are throwing up on their keyboards for a reason. Winning a rigged game, or laughing at others, in a group, waiting for them to lose as well, is not rocket science. It’s empire TV, for the maladroit. And the sh-show continues…

Look at the structure of domestic student loan policy versus immigration policy across the artificial borders and compare to system debt leverage, to get a midpoint to derivative exposure. What was the pension payment rate of growth when cash flow went negative and what is it now?

When you hunt the Great White Shark, expect its little cousin lizards to be nipping at your heels, as you pass through the gauntlet of dinosaurs. Keep nature in mind; the shark exists for a reason. Best to make several passes to pick up the necessary skills and plan accordingly, like an electron.

Have you been watching the various gov depts. order ammunition? NOAA? Are there any gov officers left that do not belong to the Homeland Security Complex? What happened to the Library’s stated goal of a self-governed people? Do you really think the food war benefits the middle class? Can the master robots get the slave robots to turn their guns on each other? If social cult addiction is the basis of economic activity, how do you change its course? What is the chemistry?

Given the characters running the system, their promissory note, what is their paper worth? Is JPM equity positive or underwater, relative to your position? Getting in is one thing; getting out is another. Where do you place your treasure?
