A Modern Day Worker Revolt

Tyler Durden's picture

In a stunning and shocking turn of events at Lonmin's Marikana platinum mine in South Africa, Reuters shows this extremely graphic clip of police opening fire on striking miners. A Reuters cameraman says he saw at least seven bodies after the shooting, which occurred when police laying out barricades of barbed wire were outflanked by some of an estimated 3,000 miners massed on a rocky outcrop near the mine, northwest of Johannesburg. Marx is not dead. In fact, far from it.

and Via Bloomberg BusinessWeek:

Lonmin Plc (LMI) slumped in London trading after saying Chief Executive Officer Ian Farmer was hospitalized with an illness and it may miss output goals following a violent strike. South African press photographs showed at least 10 people dead today as police opened fire on armed miners.

A six-day work stoppage at Lonmin’s Marikana operations in South Africa’s North West province has resulted in rioting, and fatalities rose today as police moved in to disperse protesters, Johannesburg’s eNews channel reported. Lonmin also issued a statement saying Farmer had a “serious illness” and Chairman Roger Phillimore will take charge of the executive committee.

Farmer’s hospitalization gives Lonmin “a lot of problems,” Carole Ferguson, an analyst at Fairfax IS Ltd., said by telephone from London. Farmer has a “hands-on role” where the company has its operations, she said.

Lonmin, the third-biggest platinum miner, has lost metals output equivalent to 15,000 ounces of platinum at Marikana since rock-drill operators downed tools on Aug. 10, the Johannesburg- based company said in a separate statement. The workers, many of whom have camped out near the site, have been issued with an ultimatum to return by tomorrow or face dismissal, it said.

Sorry to be voice of reason, but if you are a cop/security personal and a mob of angry and armed workers in South Africa come running at you... you have 1 rational choice of what to do. Just 1. If you haven't lived in South Africa, you probably can't fathom the logic in that, but then i suspect you'll be the same person who tries to rationalize with a mob when they come banging down your door one day. I'm not siding with the company and i dont know the entire story, but i hope most of you muppets realize that  South Africa isn't Pleasantville. Those cops and security guards have families too. They are paid to do a job... and an incredibly tough job. And mobs can often be filled with crazy people who aren't looking for a peaceful resolution and might not represent the majority.  I expect more perspective from the readers of this blog

When your job involves being the thugs to enforce the raping of your nations resources and humiliation of your own people, then you find another employer - or freelance and go find the right people to kill.

In this world, and it is coming to a town near you. You can either be a shooter or a sheep. If you are a shooter or a sheep, YOU pick! Outside of the USA, your life is worth ONE PENNY! The cost of a bullet. Get off of Your fucking high horse. Just saying.

The owners of the mine are pretty pissed off so few got shot.  They paid the police good money and expected a much more thorough job.

"We were outnumbered"  Fuck you.

not very impressive,  how many rounds fired per man down?  100.  spray and pray,  no firing discipline.  these "police" would be toasted up against vets.

This is a crime simple as that but we live in a world were life is cheap...anyway. If I had investments in South Africa or for that matter a Corp connected with SA I would seriously consider a slow covert retreat of assets.

12% of the population has HIV/AIDS. The work force is turning against the government (lol). The infrastructure is crumbling and the place is going to blow. Wait till the food prices rise later this year.

Heres a few words from FW de Klerk. Hope the US ppl can watch this interview. You can see and hear the dispair.

This gives everyone an idea of what it's going to be like when they annul the Second Amendment any Homeland Security comes to confiscate everyone's firearms. "Shot down like a dog" takes on a whole new meaning.

What should be learned in this video? Always, carry the bigger stick, & use stealth...

Highly unacceptable course of events here, those police officers are little pussy pieces of shit, I hope they get what comes to them from this event.

From the competing union (NUM):

"The National Union of Mineworkers has been established for many, many years, and is always engaged in wage negotiations, including last year.

"A new union arrived and made fresh demands for a 200 percent increase in wages for certain categories of workers, and those demands were very attractive to many.

"So this union started to recruit very aggressively and violence was meted out against NUM.

"Every day a body was found in the squatter camps around the mine, and the police had been ineffective in picking people up who did that violence."

These aren't your garden-variety strikers. The death toll is now 34.
