Must See: Greece Explained In One Picture

Tyler Durden's picture

We were going to do a caption contest out of this image, but unfortunately this is not funny. It is tragic. Many people will lose all their money, savings, livelihood, and more because of this...

What is it? It is a picture taken at the Athens ministry of finance.

It is part of a full documentary (go to 24 minutes in for the lack of money shot) released a few days ago by German TV station ZDF called The Greek Lie. It is self-explanatory, and shows where 2 years of bailout funds went, or rather didn't, and why 2 years to the day after the first bailout, not only is Greece not fixed, but is days away from leaving the Eurozone, but at a cost to taxpayers of nearly half a trillion.

We urge anyone, even non-German speakers, to set aside 45 minutes and view the clip below. It is unsettling at best.

Someone was getting "paid", in "Euros" no less, to move that stuff around.

It's easier to schlep it around in a cart. And good practise to learn proper cart handling skills seeing as how many Greeks will be living out of a shopping cart in the years to come.

Shopping carts are the perfect conveyance and metaphor for Greek government finances.

Obviously the shopping carts don't belong to the Greek finance ministry any more than the stuff inside.

No, wait. If you look really close, you can see those are actually millions of lottery tickets purchased by the Greek government in the hope of winning the Greek Lotto!

Greece is being dumped on the Germans by our friends in the East.  Seems that WWI was started in the Balkans by the same crew.  Something about either being Slav or sharing icons.

Germany is getting pushed around again.  Not sure what that will turn into.  Not a fun time if  you are Polish.  They never seem to get any joy out of jousting.

We all knew the "bailout" was going almost entirely to cover loses in EU banks. What bankers the world over can't understand is if you remove all incentive to pay - debtors won't pay.  When you push people too far - they stop playing the game. Look at almost any MSN, Yahoo or USA Today personal finance message board. They used to be dominated with how to improve your credit score and credit card rewards, now the comments are "FICO is a scam" and "pay cash" and "if you don't need it, don't buy it".

I know those blue folders, they are all about shadow banking double reporting of the past scam. Now that the reality goes beyond the fiction those blue files are like old porno movies on VHS; made obsolete by the internet never ending streaming.

Can't beat the new crowd? Join them, junk your old files and put the double accounting in a Casino; like Macau or Vegas. Lots of hot money will rush in then. Can't lose. Athens will become the biggest whore house of Europe, and Ukraine will have to eat old dry corn instead of licking on juicy white horn. That is, after the Euroligue football binge. Hooks are like nooks and crannies, they change their hold on the roving masses of hungry flash in tha pan madness, we call summer holidays. I'm sure Greece in 2013 will be hot place for hotter money and hottest cheap flesh.

Dude...you aren't paying money to the Greeks, 90% of it is going to the banks.

Here's how it works. Bankers buy politicians and media, put in political shill who in turn runs up debts maybe throwing some crumbs to proles. Does some pork barrel stuff to elite so they keep their mouth shut. Runs up the debt to unimaginable levels with help hiding it by guess who, that's right the same banks that own the politicians. Then when it's totally unpayable, you start privatizing islands, ruins etc. and you ream the good German working people out of their tax money and use Greece as scapegoat and a flow through valve for money to the banks who aided the sovereign in running up the debt. Banks get paid, sovereign loses sovereignty, hard working people in Germany and yes believe it or not, Greece are impoverished and Brussels and its banker overlords become more powerful. This isn't Greece Vs. Germany its the world's hard working people vs banks. Period.

I don't have a whole lot of German either so in watching I pretty much ignored the words, even the untertitles were in German, and while I am not sure of what was being said what the camera crew shot and what the editor left in seemed to be an obvious display of wealth inequality.  I caught a few words about so many thousands who own yatchs and do not pay taxes, and that one guy that seemed to be saying to pay tax there was to fork money over to Al Capone.

This is not going to end well, it is not going to get better before it gets worse, and it will spread.

Big problem with sudden drop in Greek government revenues as well since the election. Average 40m a day has gone down to 25m a day average. People not paying their government issued bills/tax.

Probably turning everything in their bank accounts into Euros cash so they are not caught with their pants down when the unexpected bank holiday is announced and all Euros in Greek bank accounts are transmogrified into worthless New Era Drachmas with the wave of a Venizelos magic wand. Might as well add a zero at the end of the recalculated balance so that they can afford a loaf of bread after devaluation I, II and III happen in the first six weeks.

I am fluent in German watched the entire clip. This documentary doesn't reveal anything new, but clearly describes what happened in Greece after it was allowed to adopt the Euro. There are scenes and commentaries which remind me of Detroit. Even the most casual visitor to ZH realizes that this too could be our fate.

I read the transcript from the fellow who posted here and my bad German is good enough to get a decent idea.

What is staggering is they are acting like Greece is like East Germany and will need more help. Ditto Portugal and Spain.  They will keep pushing thi EUSSR madness to the abyss.  Insanity.

They cannot change a culture.   They could through $12 trillion into Greece and Portugal.

It is not a coincidence that the flashcrash happened when the greek mob looked like it was about to storm parliament. Imagine if two years ago the odious greek state debt incurred to line the pockets of special interests connected to the greek govt and then passed off to the balance sheet of large TBTF institutions had been repudiated.. LTCM anyone ?? ...

This post explained in one word: DISGUSTING.
You remind me of those fat rich ladies in Africa fund raising parties,  "Hihihi look at those poor black shitheads living in those huts" and then they donate some thousand dollars so they can sleep well...

You either support greek people or laugh at them. It doesn't go both ways. This is the mess of the corrupt political-bankster-corp complex, which the greek people tries to fight. What do you do except making fun of everything "bitchezz"?
Can you assure me that inspecting your nation's ministries ,or even your own houses, won't generate hundreds of pics like this?
This is ridiculous. Sometimes people laugh at someone so they don't face their own problems..

Actually mate, I have worked overseas in hotzones. So don't get all high and mighty. Humour is a coping mechanism when you either will cry, go mad or both.

So before you get all holier than now, try working there yourself and you'll find the humour there waaayyyy more cutting, and thats from the people who are there.

What a stupid self righteous ass. The vast majority of people at this site know full well it is our future. Of course people are cracking jokes, its called "gallows humor" you uptight idiot.

The Greeks didnt try to "fight" anything, they were perfectly content to live high on the hog when they had other peoples money. There are two major components to the crisis both in Europe in the US- a government and financial structure happy to play manipulation games as long as they could profit from it and kick the can and a populace happy to suck up what they could under the "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today" school of thought. Well, its Tuesday.

While financial and political chicanery is certainly half of the problem the other half is a stupid, complacent population of cud chewers too busy chasing entertainment and sensation to bother attending to their part of what makes democracy or representative republic function- paying attention to what is going on and having a clue. They chose to be victims, just as the European and American populations are now.

So it seems the whole world chose to be the victims. What a brilliant explanation! Lets hang all them greedy bastards! Great. Do you have any other brilliant thoughts to add? Maybe that bankers are the suckers of all this, poor guys just wanted to help people realise their wishes!..

Humor is one thing. Mockery is another. This picture is plain sad, we didnt need this to either laugh or understand that things went wrong in greece.

Actually, I do have one more brilliant thought to add...

If you buy a vice clamp and attach it to a sturdy table, you can screw it down on the pole in your posterior and use the resulting leverage to pop your head free.

loose is the opposite of tight and rhymes with goose and moose. It's also the order given to archers to release their arrows ...

lose is the opposite of win (or find) and rhymes with choose and booze ...

loser is the opposite of winner and rhymes with boozer, cruiser and end-user ...

loss is the opposite of gain and rhymes with boss and toss.

Leeds is a place in England ... you meant: leads, which is another widely misused word due to the confusion that the metal called lead rhymes with red and the verb to lead rhymes with greed and seed and its past tense is led which rhymes with shed and bed ... He led me down the garden path which leads to the lead mine.

Confusing, eh? I guess that’s why they don’t bother to teach this stuff any more, even though it was Third Grade material a few short years ago. That’s progress!

What part of "As a tourist attraction, Modern Ruins are 1000% more ugly than Ancient Ones" does Mr. Krugman NOT understand?

This isn’t a prediction that everything will be fine, but it is a caution that the pessimism about Greek prospects once the turmoil is past may be overdone.

What is going on around 28 minuten?  It looks like some Asian guy going to Greece.  Was this Chinese or Japanese bailout money?  The guy looks Japanese and they are more broke than Greece.

I laugh that Europe thought China would bail them out.   The Chinese work their people like dogs.  Maybe the Greece could donate 6 million kidneys and other vital organs to the Chinese. The Africans are learning that the white slave drivers were BoyScouts compared to the Chinese now running all over Africa now.

I feel sorry for Greece.  It's cruel to allow a poor country/individual to join their wealthy bretheren and then get booted out and laughed at, when wealthy relatives find out that it cannot pull it's weight.  Before they were just poor, now they are poor and deeply ashamed.  Lesson to all of us.  Stick with your own kind.
