Is The New iPad Too Hot To Handle?

Tyler Durden's picture

Headlines only via Bloomberg for now, with some very modest downside in the stock for now:

  • *CONSUMER REPORTS STUDYING WHETHER APPLE IPAD POSES INJURY RISK
  • *CONSUMER REPORTS SAYS IT'S TESTING IPAD AMID REPORTS OF HEATING
  • *APPLE'S IPAD SUBJECT OF THERMAL ANALYSIS BY CONSUMER REPORTS

Perhaps this is Apple's way of allowing us to eat iPads warm? A new feature not a bug? Or perhaps it is really smart as we see gas prices rise as a way to heat our homes more efficiently (although in the new normal cold weather is a thing of the past so it may have been unnecessary)?

My iTouch 3 gets fairly warm when I run anything that processes heavy graphics (not to mention the increase in battery consumption). Otherwise it does fine. I just don't run games on it much.

Maybe they'll need a low graphics mode on the new beast? Or is the Retina display itself the issue?

From what I have read on the Apple forum and elsewhere, it looks like bad batteries are causing the problem. The same people having overheating problems also complain about slow charging rates and aren't running as long on a charge. The charger may not be big enough to handle the larger wattage battery in some cases. However, some people aren't having any overheating issues at all.

Tue, 03/20/2012 - 11:35 | 2273369 LetThemEatRand
LetThemEatRand's picture

I guess in your world no vehicle ever caught fire until they started making the Volt.  In such a world, seemingly logical comparisons can be made between a hot battery in an IPad, and any attempt to reduce our dependence on oil.  In the real world, the logic is completely absent and you look like an idealogue.

Hey, I remember Pintos....

My point is that technology ain't easy and a lot of people relying on it to save the world are in for a rude suprise...

IIRC, they are both Li Ion based batteries, e.g. same technology...

Tue, 03/20/2012 - 11:52 | 2273418 LetThemEatRand
LetThemEatRand's picture

Fair enough, but Drudge and others have succeeded at convincing many sheep that the Volt is somehow more dangerous than other vehicles, when the opposite is true.   No Volt has ever caught on fire during an accident.  The two reported fires occurred weeks post-accident and presumably could have been prevented by unhooking the batteries.   Conversely, thousands have died in vehicle fuel fed fires at the accident scene.  These deaths are apparently acceptable to the far right anti-Volt crowd, whereas fires that occur in unoccupied car lots are not.  When I see anyone call out the Volt for its fire hazard, I get testy because it is another example of arguing over fake facts.  I see now that you were not doing that.

Tue, 03/20/2012 - 15:02 | 2274293 i_fly_me
i_fly_me's picture

My objections to the volt have nothing to do with the recent fires and everything to do with the fact that they are centrally planned, junk-science-scare inspired, prototypical technology (at best) for which, to several decimal places, there is absolutely no market demand.

Apple III - hold it 3 inches up and drop it to reseat the chips, which came unsoldered due to overheating. Not only was Jobs around at the time, it was his fault, as he insisted on having no ventilation holes in the computer case, for aesthetics, and to reduce noise and RFI.

According to www.tweakers.net, the new iPad runs about 10 degrees warmer than the iPad2.  It hits 92.5 degrees Farenheit after 5 minutes of operation.  Perhaps there are a number of defective units out there which overheat, but it doesn't seem that the issue is systematic.
