Is The New iPad Too Hot To Handle?
Headlines only via Bloomberg for now, with some very modest downside in the stock for now:
- *CONSUMER REPORTS STUDYING WHETHER APPLE IPAD POSES INJURY RISK
- *CONSUMER REPORTS SAYS IT'S TESTING IPAD AMID REPORTS OF HEATING
- *APPLE'S IPAD SUBJECT OF THERMAL ANALYSIS BY CONSUMER REPORTS
Perhaps this is Apple's way of allowing us to eat iPads warm? A new feature not a bug? Or perhaps it is really smart as we see gas prices rise as a way to heat our homes more efficiently (although in the new normal cold weather is a thing of the past so it may have been unnecessary)?

mmmm.. apple pie.
You can't eat iPads, but you can use them to fry an egg, so it's close!
iPad will be renamed as iBurn and sold to many Apple fan iMbeciles because it is iCool to have iGadget.
Did new I Pad Buyers get Burned?
Just part of Jobs innovation. Pre heat-em and eat-em snacks. No microwave required. yummmmm............
Plus, a Volt in the garage and an iPad in the living room means big savings on heating bills.
My playbook treats me well, does more then i need it too and doesn't burn me.
Did I mention I paid $200 for it.
F*&K Appl and their cult.
Wow, Jobs is gone a few months and Apple starts to fall apart. Imagine that.
This is the cartel's way of burning up those 100s of millions of AAPL structure notes they have been selling. If AAPL falls 7% principal is wiped out on these notes for the Muppets.
If these notes aren't a sign that the stock has peaked, I don't know what is
Apple sauce bitchez.
Mine cooks bacon so... suck it.
iGrill cheese
iGeorge Forman apps
iGriddle...who wants flapjacks?
They don't call him Tim "Cook" for nothing.
It's a handwarmer for the ihomeless.
You iHandWarmer 3 ?
iSit on it in the cold car ...
iButtwarmer
Its all because of LTE and apple's sheepish customers aren't used to LTE chips getting super hot.
My Galaxy Nexus could fry an egg after running in 4G hotspot mode for 15 minutes.
that can't be good for battery life.
No its the new screen. My 4g note doesnt get hot. Typing on it right now. Maybe 75 degrees.
iPad was built in the same plant as the iVolt!
ican heat up my bagel while playing Angry birds.
O-iVey
Great, now nat gas is going to zero for sure. iHeat.
Throw an egg on that bitch and make iBreakfast, bitchez.
Home heating oil will be close to $5.00/gallon by next December.
The fact that the iPad is both a tablet computer and a hi-tech hot water bottle will be seen as a major marketing plus.
Good for $700 by month end EASY!
My iTouch 3 gets fairly warm when I run anything that processes heavy graphics (not to mention the increase in battery consumption). Otherwise it does fine. I just don't run games on it much.
Maybe they'll need a low graphics mode on the new beast? Or is the Retina display itself the issue?
My guess is it's the retina display. My 4s can get pretty warm at times.
But how does it work with iPorn? Thats all that really matters.
Stick it between yer legs and find out...
From what I have read on the Apple forum and elsewhere, it looks like bad batteries are causing the problem. The same people having overheating problems also complain about slow charging rates and aren't running as long on a charge. The charger may not be big enough to handle the larger wattage battery in some cases. However, some people aren't having any overheating issues at all.
Maybe the Batteries are Radioactive. I understand they are made in Japan near the failed Reactor.
Anyone make the connection between the Ipad issues and the Volt???
Could it be that the batteries are a fuckin bitch to get right??
I guess in your world no vehicle ever caught fire until they started making the Volt. In such a world, seemingly logical comparisons can be made between a hot battery in an IPad, and any attempt to reduce our dependence on oil. In the real world, the logic is completely absent and you look like an idealogue.
Hey, I remember Pintos....
My point is that technology ain't easy and a lot of people relying on it to save the world are in for a rude suprise...
IIRC, they are both Li Ion based batteries, e.g. same technology...
Fair enough, but Drudge and others have succeeded at convincing many sheep that the Volt is somehow more dangerous than other vehicles, when the opposite is true. No Volt has ever caught on fire during an accident. The two reported fires occurred weeks post-accident and presumably could have been prevented by unhooking the batteries. Conversely, thousands have died in vehicle fuel fed fires at the accident scene. These deaths are apparently acceptable to the far right anti-Volt crowd, whereas fires that occur in unoccupied car lots are not. When I see anyone call out the Volt for its fire hazard, I get testy because it is another example of arguing over fake facts. I see now that you were not doing that.
My objections to the volt have nothing to do with the recent fires and everything to do with the fact that they are centrally planned, junk-science-scare inspired, prototypical technology (at best) for which, to several decimal places, there is absolutely no market demand.
BLS Breaking News - It's just a seasonal adjustment. The exceptional warm weather is contributing to iPad heating.
Reposting a funny video I think I first saw posted here on ZH. Some good techniques for cooling off those iPad shown here:

everything on this planet gets more absurd by the hour. did they just skip the testing phase of the "new" product?
But AAPL is only down 1% this AM, need to fry some flesh off to really see some movement.
Steve Jobs is irreplaceable and it shows. He wouldn't let Apple release such an unfinished product.
Weren't you around for antenna-Gate?
Apple III - hold it 3 inches up and drop it to reseat the chips, which came unsoldered due to overheating. Not only was Jobs around at the time, it was his fault, as he insisted on having no ventilation holes in the computer case, for aesthetics, and to reduce noise and RFI.
they can sell iBalm for you iBurns....great marketing idea
Maybe they pulled a Microsoft and designed their own graphics chip (because they can do EVERYTHING PERFECTLY!! ... except manufacture in the US.)... sizzling!
Barton Biggs is bullish: http://www.thetrader.se/2012/03/20/icrash/
finally the crash is here
In the Northeast, in the winter, people can buy a few IPADs and no longer need to worry about home heating oil. Brilliant!
Hand warmer Apps? or emergency stove apps?
So does this mean the epic ponzi scheme is finally over?
No. 'Nuff said, I'm afraid.
Still expect loooooong lines. Filled with some people buying - and some exchanging. They never planned on having two queues. Maybe they'll use the backdoor after-hours.
Good.
I hope everyone sucked into this mania gets burned, literally, and figuratively, at the same time.
Can I plug it into 50hz?
If I move quick I may be able to be the first to burn my house down with one.
It's not so hot if you use it in Artic climate.
"The new iPad: too cool to miss, too hot to handle!"
I just checked-out new iPad.
I can see why it is priced as it is - no incremental value.
Compared to Samsung Galaxy Tab 10 and I preffered the Samsung. I suspect the iPad thing is pure media hype - can you believe it? Is Goldman recommending AAPL? That would cement it. Die yuppy scum!
Yep iGoldman in fact just raised their 'iTarget' to $i700.
iAsbestos gloves....theres an app for that.
AAPL @ 400 here we go!
Some defective units have gotten into the supply chain. My brother in law bought an identical new iPad like the one the wife got (32 GB WiFi). His does not overheat watching NetFlix. Ours shuts down after 30 minutes watching the same movie with the same NetFlix App.
Anyone see some "Foxconn revenge" here?
their new slogan...........iimolate. Let us Bring out the Monk in you.
So many options:
The cast iron iHotPlate or colorful silicon iHeatPad are just two.
Install a heat sink off to the side to place your hot beverage. Either way there's two or three iterations in the pipeline you can expect to pay a premium for.
Get 'em while they're hot!!!
Good times

I love the new Ipad, I look like a trendy hipster POS. Thank you poor chinese people!
chrunchy, and now toasty, AND MADE IN CHINA!
perfect business model imho.
Goes to show what will become of the Company now Jobs is gone.
Jobs would have never let that product be sold to the Public. Looks like the Halo is fading with inferior products.
According to www.tweakers.net, the new iPad runs about 10 degrees warmer than the iPad2. It hits 92.5 degrees Farenheit after 5 minutes of operation. Perhaps there are a number of defective units out there which overheat, but it doesn't seem that the issue is systematic.
Just like the antenna problem that could easily be fixed by buying an iPhone case, overheating could be fixed with an iPad radiator.
I prefer my iPads slow cooked in the smoker for 12-16 hours...they come out very soft and tender, Garnish with some white lithium grease and horseradish...yum, yum.
Dear Apple,
Yea, but the whole evolution thing with notebooks and tablets is supposed to be towards lighter, COOLER, and more powerful. IMO my HP 2560p does more for a business than the hot Pad.
Sincerely,
An Apple IIe Fan
Now that I think of it, maybe Apple should have held on to that cash when the future class action law suits start rolling in. Far fetched, but all these millions of people holding a scorching hot electronic device so close to their chest---breast/lung cancer 10 years down the road?
Problem can be easily fixed by purchasing the iCePack and placing the hot iPad on top of it.
This is NOT speculation. i have the thermal tests showing the new Ipad runs at 92F -94F vs old one at 82F. I do not know if.this is a big deal or not. I wouldnt worry about personal injury as much as warranty (MSFT RROD anyone) and maybe Sony style battery explosions after a few minths heavy use.
Looks like unpaid overtime and no dessert for some Chinese kids.
iRE
iPad Ready to Eat
They just delivered the military spec to the civilian distributors by MiSTAKE.
This should have been expected. 4x the rez. 2x the gpu on same nm process. 2x battery size with same life =2x discharge rate.
Key question is did they design this to run at 10f hotter then ipad 2 for 2-3 years. And how many defective units will get above 95 and lock up.
I expected a few Ijokes, and ZH did NOT disappoint!
A loaded up Apple II could overheat as well, Steve didn't like (noisey) fans. Now it is Tom's turn to Cook.
