New User Interface
First, note that if you're having trouble logging in, you need to clear your cache. If you're still having issues, run CCleaner, and if you're still having problems, email us at info@.
Note: You can adjust which comments you see in the "junking" (as it's referred to), by adjusting your threshold in the drop down menu where you set how many comments you see, if you're authenticated. If you want to see everyone's comments, go for it. No one's? Good there too. There's a maximum range on our ability to "up" and "down" a comment -- we can't push a comment completely below your view. Moreover, if there's a comment you want to see that's below your current threshold, just click on it. It will show up. It just drops down, like magic.
Some notable features:
1. The new comment function is vastly improved. Authenticated users will be able to set threshold levels, effectively blocking out everything deemed sub-par by comment raters.
2. On the right, you'll notice you now have access to the most recent comments and top stories.
3. A much improved search function.
4. Similar stories, once the update catches up from the data migration, offers stories that share key words with the current story.
5. If you click on "My Account", you can see your most recent comments so you can track them.
6. Notably, you'll need to re-register for subscriptions. The new method is much better than the old, but we couldn't transfer the lists.
(edit)
7. We've changed Captcha.
8. Someone pointed out that users (non contributor/admin) couldn't search for other users. This has been rectified.
9. Adding Spellchecker.
10. Re: comment moderation, slashdot did an interesting piece on this (as this moderation system is derived from them), and came to the conclusion that it's absurd to let everyone moderate comments. Not only is it prone to abuse, but it defeats the purpose of having moderators (as it creates moderation wars). They elected to do a Karma system where everyone gets a shot at moderating at some point; we may adopt the same.
11. Just to clarify, aside from some sidebar stuff, the CSS on the font stayed exactly the same.
12. I'll take away user pictures if it's abused.
13. Added 'new comments' per user(s) request(s).
14. The lag you're seeing now is because the servers are updating, effectively digesting the new information (all of the user content, including posts).
If you have any questions or concerns, email me. We hope you enjoy everything.

Sacrilege, I love you THIIIIIISSSSS MUUUUUCCCHHHH. Gots a siggy now and everything...
How does one search for a user now?
Can we have a recall?
The only substantive change, gall batter, is the comment presentation and the negation of the Junk button (which I may or may not re-add). What exactly is your issue?
see, i am so rattled, i didn't hit reply.
Is sacrilege tylers tech guru or the new tyler????
Tech guy, he's been around for quite a while, he just doesn't say much.
Sort of the ZH version of Yoda. Good at levitating X-wings and such.
Now if we could just get Marla back...
same as it ever was, same as it ever was.
Please, please, please ADD the JUNK BUTTON BACK!!
I say thumbs up, and thumbs down with a count of each vote. Otherwise nothing.
I have to agree. Junks became somewhat meaningless to all comments except the truly ignorant and distasteful......perhaps a "Golden" button to accompany the "Junk"
u got my vote.
junk & golden sounds wonderful.
Thumbs up.
It's kinda like a new pair of shoes. Takes a little getting used to but will become a favorite soon.
Thanks for fixing the junk-fest. As always, I never left a junk without an accompanying comment. Well, maybe one or two for selected contestants.
Where is the damn SPELL-CHECK button?
A lot of space is taken up with the shaded header. The old comment format packed a lot into little space. I'm worried about too many images if everyone can post. The signatures will take up a ton of room. Just those comments for now.
Tyler
The things you own end up owning you.
But the screenplay effect works? Oh, hello baby!
The edit button is not working, maybe it is just me, and the centering format still doesn't work, maybe that is just me as well. Good night everyone; see you on "the bii-polar US can't make up its mind whether to ruin the world now or later Sunday".
@ traderjoe
I agree.
Too visually busy (just like Turd Ferguson's site). The beauty of ZH was that it didn't give you a headache reading comments. Now everybody is gonna have some long signature that's gonna take a second to realize is not part of their comment. Lose the header and all the boxes. I'm afraid I'll be less apt to scroll through all the comments now. Stopped reading TFs blog altogether for these reasons (that, plus every other user embeds a youtube video). But I'm speaking as an aesthetician, not a technician.
totally agree.......same here re:Turd's blog
+1
Agreed. I'm not a Luddite, but one of the things I really liked about the previous displays was the clarity. It now looks a bit busy (and how many people are going to add 'signatures' that are mildly amusing the first time but become wearisome as a result of the space they take up?).
Why fix something that wasn't broken?
I noticed that after hitting reply, the grey box is much, much thinner. It would be nice, in my opinion, to make the normal comments look like this because the gray boxes are too big. Other than that, nice work on the update.
I think from a design perspective (my background) the signature quote within the dialogue box underneath the fixed information (name, score, date) is confusing. My suggestion would be to move the signature quote either up next to or under the user's name within the greyed area. Alternatively, create a grey border box underneath the dialogue area, and to complimenthe grey border at the top where the name resides, for the signature quote and possible future other needs.
Additionally, Sacrilege, I think losing the "junk" feature seriously diminishes the user experience that created pique and sass and helped with the overall ambiance of the site. There seems to be a resistance to either a thumbs up/down icon, or a like icon. That was the frustration previously. There was junk but no alternative. Perhaps you can coopt Google and retain the junk but add a +1. That seems zerohedgy to me.
I think that with the lack of a community voting mechanism of some type, ZH becomes helplessly vulnerable to organized troll attacks--like the NAT-SEEs who so often sweep through and leave crazy shit. The JUNK feature allowed the community of this unmoderated site to make clear that the freaks do not represent the sentiments of the community as a whole.
For that worst case example, it worked even better than a "like/dislike" feature could.
A lot of people are motivated to discredit ZH, imo, and it shouldn't be made easier--as it has been with this--for them to do it.
I've noticed there are always people complaining in whatever form that they got JUNKED (!). My thought has always been "why are you so exquisitely sensitive to getting a fucking JUNK or two on ZH?" I never said anything in reply because I sensed that I would get nowhere with them. They're sensitive people. If I had known that management was surveying comments for tips on improving the system, however, I would have answered those complaints.
Oh well.
Honestly, I'D put the JUNK feature back in.
Keep your hands offa my JUNK, bitchez.
Nice job!
And while changes are being made can you make the ZH header flow/fit in a 1024 px screen width? Long time pet peeve.
I'll look into it..
Sacrilege, I'm old and a creature of habit. New horizons jar me.
I can understand that; I can be that way, too. I think once you give it a chance, you'll be really happy with the new everything!
Is the font heavy bold? .... it is hard to read . The text is better in the reply section.
awesome, g_bat
Ok it is cool that my posts are blue. But how about making new posts a color or tagged? That would be tremendously wonderful!
And what no emoticons? C'mon! :p
+1 for new posts in different color
emoticons only if I can disable it :)
(+1 for new posts in different color)
+1
-1 for new posts in a different color it will end up looking like a rainbow flag. Simply but "new" in red next to a post.
I like that idea. Not the emoticons one, the one that made sense. :)
Good to hear emoticons are on the no list. I wouldn't be mad if the "insert image" function disappeared too. Or, have a seperate, non-VIP only junk system for them. Footnotes are a solid idea as well.
Two gripes:
1. The ZH logo in the upper right is gone
2. The "Secondary links" list is incomplete(ends with Dealbreaker).
yes colors!! ive been here a long while -- a lost voice in this darkness, but the new format is welcome
Yeah, new comments in different color is a great idea.
The shaded header for each comment disturbs the flow visually, IMO.
The smaller font and white headers allowed me to read the comments a little more smoothly.
Just to confirm the scoring system, moderators and contributors only will score comments at this stage?
Won't that create confirmation bias? One user, one vote seemed a little more equitable.
While you're at it could you please make all of my posts intelligent? Thanks in advance.
Very nice!
You are off to a great start with this new format, BB. But shouldn't you be down at the nearest Applebee's or local dive bar celebrating your special day?
Happy birthday baby_BLYTHE!
That'll do pig. That'll do.
Darn it, when is his beard or tie gonna get caught in the roller(s)? :>D
No. No. No. Reformat is the key not print.
I miss the simplicity of the old Zh, ah well, have to get used to the new one. When one lives long enough change happens.
The new UI is great, but the font sucks. Difficult to read a lot of ZH at a stretch.
+1
rock on.
I'm not sure what to make of this
This looks like Denningers blog. And now we have rating issues with comments?
Wtf is this?
This must be under new management.
Call the new boss, BIG SIS! And then lick the gray spot in her hair!!!!!
Congress has outdone itself !!!!!!! The constitution? SCREW IT!
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/07/23/super-congress-debt-ceiling_n_9...
Super Congress': Debt Ceiling Negotiators Aim To Create New Legislative Body
Debt ceiling negotiators think they've hit on a solution to address the debt ceiling impasse and the public's unwillingness to let go of benefits such as Medicare and Social Security that have been earned over a lifetime of work: Create a new Congress.
This "Super Congress," composed of members of both chambers and both parties, isn't mentioned anywhere in the Constitution, but would be granted extraordinary new powers.
Under a plan put forth by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and his counterpart Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.),
Legislation approved by the Super Congress -- which some on Capitol Hill are calling the "super committee" -- would then be fast-tracked through both chambers, where it couldn't be amended by simple, regular lawmakers, who'd have the ability only to cast an up or down vote.
I don't know who this reporter "Ryan Grim" is...but this is the surest way to open rebellion.
Yes nmewn, another baby step towards Empire. Bad enough when that extends to military occupation abroad, but now an outright cabal within the legislative branch? Horrendous. Do these fools not realise that while a civilized man may be "governed" freemen can never be "ruled"? My patience wears thin with this sort of behavior, very thin.
This "report" from Grim at Huff-Po pissed me off so bad I've been all over the place trying to confirm it.
He's got quotes from an anonymous democrat staffer saying whats in a "proposal" that no "leader" has come forward and attached their name to it.
I'm saying its rabbit chasing/trial balloon fish bait...Huff-Po is the only one running with it. I've been everywhere, firedog, Kos, Breitbart, Fox, redstate...nuthin.
I think Grim is standing too close to the Hopium vent ;-)
I am glad that you took the time to examine the veracity of this report, (can't do it now, at work), but to me, the real point is that this sort of thing tends to take on a life of it's own.
I'm sure you've heard the expression, "give him a rope, and he thinks he's a cowboy" LOL
The whole "gang of x" thing started quite a way back, and it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if we were to see an attempt at changing the Senate, or House rules to accommodate this chicanery. Hell, why not, right? We already have a super-empowered Presidency. Let's see if the sheep will accept a super-empowered Congress as well.
It is for their own good you know. ;)
I have no doubt they can suspend the rules to avoid time constraints...but to create a body higher than themselves to avoid their responsibility?...naaaw.
They are equal with the other two branches of government...judiical and exeutive...they would be creating something above those two as well if they subordinate themselves to it...it has the whiff of desperation ;-)
We have to remember, some of these staffers that reporters rely on are mere babes and are just as clueless as reporters...the House membership is not going to lay down for the un-constitutionality of this, bank on it.
If there is any truth to it at all..it smells like a McConnell/Schumer thing...both of these turds need to be flushed.
Didn't mean to give the impression that they could officially create an exalted body of the uber-morons, that would be struck down by the Courts, or voted down in the House, at least.
Seems to me that the driving force to be reckoned with here is internal politics within the R's. The TP'ers are bucking a stacked deck when they are represented in joint committee by entrenched whores like Boehner, or Bitch McC.
At this point, I'm quite hopeful that their collective greed and stupidity result in default, by default, if you get my meaning. And yes, the stench of desperation is strong with this bunch.
Enjoy your weekend.
"Didn't mean to give the impression that they could officially create an exalted body of the uber-morons, that would be struck down by the Courts, or voted down in the House, at least."
No no, I didn't take it that way. I try to convey inflection to my language which is hard to do with only the written word.
"The TP'ers are bucking a stacked deck when they are represented in joint committee by entrenched whores like Boehner, or Bitch McC."
Yes they are...and I don't mind saying I support them 100%!!! We wouldn't even be having a budgetary discussion of wants vs needs if it were not for them...they were put there precisely to say not only no but hell no!
I think its too far gone as well as clearly the admission by everyone is we will default without another credit card application being approved to pay the credit card bills coming in...but at least we grabbed them by the collar, shoved their ass against the wall and are getting some fucking honesty out of them...for a "change"...lol.
Look where we are now...they (the government) now openly admits what we, the people (both left and right) have said for years and were called lunatics for...that Social Security is in fact a ponzi...that counterfeiting is only a crime when certain private individuals do it, meaning us, not the Fed, which is not the government either...that there is no real stock market here anymore, only algos trading ficticious digits back & forth so board members get their pay at a 15% tax...that real money (gold & silver) must be suppresed by the state for the benefit of the Wall Street-DC axis, the real parasites in all this.
We've come a long way baby ;-)
Great. King Obama the First is getting a Privy Council?
General Secretary For Life Obomber is getting a new Politburo. There...fixed it for you.
@Sac: Now when I edit a second time, the first edit doesn't appear (the initial message that I thought I edited is still there). I also don't like the new editing font ... it's too small for my ageing eyesight!! /whinge
If you use Firefox, obtain the NoSquint add-on, and you can then adjust the text for entire web pages, indeed, the entire interwebz! Bwuaahahaha!
I'm cool with the standard font...just objecting to the font in the message/edit box. Zooming the whole page is a bitch. BTW, I do prefer Firefox, but use IE8 on this machine.
@sac: Still can't re-edit an edited message (the original always appears without the first edit).
George Soros's Shadow Party in full effect.
Font giving me headache. The Ws are messed up!
Where is spell check and how does the Score Deal work?
Wow, I created a signature. I'm beginning to like this.
How?
answered you above but here goes. click on "my account". in the box that says "signature", write something--whatever you want.
Thanks
you got The Juice tonite!
and you win for mr. non-congeniality. good news tho, there may be a bathing suit contest.
Yeah, now try getting rid of it.
And why is my score only 1, i should be about a 7 or 8 if i'm talking about gold!
not incremental, like a cleaver
I think an open vs an exclusive comment rating system would be better suited. An exclusive ratings system is akin to the main stream media deciding what is news worthy. Seems a little elitist to me.
Seems a little elitist to me.
Maybe just keep the junk feature AND the rating system for a kinda of checks and balances.
That's the way I'd do it, too. Let folks block comments either by rating or by junk threshold.
The interesting bit is that most of the heavily junked comments were selected for unpopular viewpoints, so the folks who are the most sensitive to disagreement would never have to see another RoboTrader comment again. Or what-have-you.
Might save everyone a good bit of annoyance.
Can you hear me now. I want to Beleive.
Jobe you need the spell check :)
So what's the deal with the (total) score?
How doe's that work? How do you vote? Or do only a special group of people get to vote?
I guess if you have Cyber SeX
I can tell ya that being here 1 year and 51 weeks won't cut it. I am certainly not in the club.
I musta torqued the wrong bolt someplace.
Any more questions?
Rocky, let me know; I am like 10 weeks behind ya.
Is there a reason for the "new" in front of everyone's name?
sounds like something new
that sac_e troll reminds me of bankster customer service
It means you're new.
O.K. I get it now. "New" as in "new comment".
I'm not seeing it.
Tyler,
You are a bigger Geek than I envisioned. Nice work. Now go get a beer and a pizza and start the rants.
Cheers mate.
yo sac, u rock, thanks for the work™
It is cool we can insert pictures now. Good job Tyler and the rest of ZH. Interested to see how this changes the dynamic of our discussions.
in one hour, chi-town time...L0L
+++++ +++++ +++++ +++++ +
Yeah, that's lovely. Just lovely....
Ok...I'm an ole fart...how? Do you save it down to your hard drive first?
if you have it on your HDD just upload it to Tinypic or some other free image hosting site.
Select the generated link [url].jpeg paste it into image url field on here
I know not of what you speak.....what is this "image url field"....I see it not.
Aha!
Good to know. Yours & Tmoes seem to have disappeared...maybe they rethought the idea or I've screwed around with something and now I'm blocking them.
Thanks for the response BB.
You still have a hard drive? Man, you are old!
Please don't tell me you fell into the cloud? Even SSHD's are better than The " ANTI CHRISTS" hard drives in the sky!
I see porn spamming in our future. I also see longer load times for comments pages. I am not certain everyone needs to be able to add pictures....
why are you swimming so slowly, amigo?
Agree the porn spamming part.... But good enough for government work.
we'll move this to 4chan soon... do they have a /z/ yet?
the link to other sites only has A through D????
Did I just lose my two comments? My first was at 11:50 PM ET as a new comment. My other comment at 11:54 PM ET was just under Chumbawamba's comment.
It is now 12:09 AM ET Sunday, July 24.
zH is set to chicago time for baby_B's BiChn B'Day, BiCheZ!
just in time too ;)
First drink is on me tonight boys, I am headed out in a bit for my first legal drink.
Stormy here tonight in the city though.
cheerZ! & safe journey b_B!
Well, Happy and Safe Birthday to you!
Ah my 1st legal drink. Seems like a lifetime ago. 3.2 beer served at 18.
Have fun.
Stormy here tonight in the city though.
Wow. Look at those giant ads for vodka.
Refocus. Back to the weather comment: Yesterday morning I experienced a lightning storm so severe and violent and long ( 40 minutes right over the house) that literally caused my body to vibrate ( not in a good way ) for at least 2 hours from the ionic activity.
There is some weather shit going.
Interesting Goldfish.
Can you give a broadly approximate location? I like to follow this kind of news.
Thanks,
ORI
Well, if it makes you feel any better, Chumba's comment is now also gone...
?
Great job on the site -- though as for many, will take a while for me to get used to (default font size is near-microscopic right now, esp. in the comment entry window). Neat touches on the comment options. Look forward to the new rating/junk/+1 system.
Look forward to the new rating/junk/+1 system.

@DoChenRolling -- They were on a different thread, not this one. You can keep track of your comments by clicking "My Account".
I JUST saw that myself Sacrilege, my apologies. Thread before this one.
beam him down, scotty
Sacrilege, slewie,
I just went to two other sites and came back here as a test. I did not have to Login again (as was the case before your new changes).
These letters here in the "Reply to comment" window are really tiny though... Tough on 55 yr old eyes...
beam me up, scotty
Having each posters comment box display as a "box" with varying widths is visually very jarring and not conducive to a flowing and easily followed conversation.
So, you have included some robust technical features, but the visual is not where it needs to be.
I think that Freerebublic has one of the best user contributed formats out there. Neat and clean, and, hell, they've been doing it for 14 + years, so, lots of iterations there.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2753089/posts
See how comments are displayed in consecutive horizontal left right columns with lots of white space and only a thin black line separating them?
Much easier to navigate, Sac.
They have a sweet 'Pings' notification feature (lets you know a post has been replied to) and poster activity ('Find In Forum') feature too.
A format unlike any other on the web thanks to John Robinson.
And selecting the 'Activity' page lets one see all the comments *from all threads* as they are recently posted; hitting the 'reload' page feature is like pulling the lever on a slot machine and can get addictive ... seeing the new posts from various threads appearing on the same screen with the ability to select a comment RIGHT THERE to reply back to one ...
.
Nice. Looks like you have an incorrect path to the header logo though.
Nice.
My avatar (Wooden Bender, "Obsoletely Fabulous")...
Too much hot linking?
People who use signatures should be executed at dawn.
Damned irritating things.
This is a good one... you should try it.
[but I agree, mine will be just for today]
I hope you don't mind a little plagarism.
You are probably right. Here, I just created one to help it go away. I promise to take it down Sunday night.
Testing 1,2,3....
Looks good, and I agree with BB, pictures might add some interesting new elements to the scrum.
what do you set the damned thing @ to still be able to read robo_T & trav, no matter what?
login to Alt.zerohedge.com
it's been down a lot lately
thank you
I feel conflicted with this. I shall sleep on it.
how do you download pics? i type in the url and i get nothing
press yer luck? ok, k__0,
1) click on tree icon
2) ckick "Appearance" tab
3) get it?
It dawns on me now that this must be amusing to watch from the outside. Like taking a complicated new toy and throwing it in the primate enclosure at the Zoo just to watch the poor beasts run amuck, scream like hell, and look puzzled as they try to figure out what the fuck to do with it.
Sac you sick bastard.
It is fun.
LOL! +1
Wait, ZH exchanged its Greek bonds and took a haircut?!
Well done Sacrilege.
Thanks, Π.
Looks like a lot of hard work went into this.
I have no axe to grind with Ron Paul but I've seen his banner thrice already. Five is right out.
What is your favorite color?
What is the average velocity of an unladen fake money supply?

What is that tilted, eyeglass-looking thing at the right-end of the line (after the time)?
