Obama Kills Keystone XL Pipeline
Who needs actual jobs when you can have crony solar companies which go tits up in under 2 years at a cost to taxpayers of over half a bill. From Bloomberg: "The Obama administration will likely announce rejection of TransCanada Corp.’s Keystone XL pipeline later today or tomorrow, according to two people familiar with the matter. The decision will probably come from the State Department, which has been charged with reviewing the project, and a joint statement will come from some of the larger unions and environmental groups in support of the decision, according to one of the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity before the announcement is made. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the administration would continue studying alternative routes for the pipeline from Canada to the U.S. Gulf Coast."
The Obama administration will announce this afternoon it is rejecting a Canadian firm’s application for a permit to build and operate a massive oil pipeline across the U.S.-Canada border, according to sources who have been briefed on the matter.
However the administration will allow TransCanada to reapply after it develops an alternate route through the sensitive habitat of Nebraska’s Sandhills. Deputy Secretary of State William J. Burns will make the announcement, which comes in response to a congressionally-mandated deadline of Feb. 21 for action on the proposed Keystone pipeline.
Reapply... only to be shut down again.

never mind he just picked it up.
And scored it par.
This is good from my perspective. This project would have created jobs and made Obama look good. Less jobs, more people on food stamps, higher unemployent = less chance of getting elected. It wouldn''t have made a massive difference but every inch he digs brings us just a little closer to getting him the fuck out of here,
This is another purely political decision from the Obama Administration.
They all are. Anyone who thinks differently needs to be beaten about the head until they snap out of it.
and like his hokus habeaus pokus, it's a short and temporary stage act.
This guy wants to throw America further in debt by trillions in "stimulus" to no ends at all--but he will not let another country come here and spend money on a project that will put Americans to work and bring continuous revenues for oil distribution at NO COST to us--IN FACT, they want to PAY US to do it!
There needs to be a whole round of fairly earned televised ass kickings for this. I mean people need to get their asses WHUPPED like they should have been as kids-but their parents were to fucked up to realize it.
look at equities go! lol this market is phucked
OT: OH F*CK
12:08 PM Bloomberg's Linda Yueh reports the President is considering nominating Larry Summers to head the World Bank.

Being evil must be so much fun, not to mention rewarding.
It's only fun because Americans allow it to happen because we are too preoccupied with Tebow vs. Brady and what new adventures those zany kids from New Jersey are going to get into. If people would start getting their priorities in order then all this shit would end most ricky tick.
They're gonna have to learn the definition of repudiate first.
And I don't think Snooki's going to tell them.
I hear Jon Corzine is looking for another banking job.......
So, I wonder why TPTB want Obama to be a one term president? It's not like Obama suddenly grew an interest in supporting his constituency. I mean he has already proven himself to be a neocon with respect to our war mongering foreign policy. And he is clearly an opponent of civil rights as he signed the NDAA into law after saying he wouldn't... it's not like he's some sort of environmentalist all of a sudden. It would seem that this one is almost too easy: access to energy, creation of jobs, etc. The conspiracy theorist in me thinks that this is as transparent as GHWB yawning and checking his watch during a debate.
I can understand the cheese dick tree huggars being against the deal, but what unions? Oh wait, it's the " underwater basket weaving" union. What a parasite/leech Otool is!
Calling Flakmeister, what your take on this...?
See below....
This is good news for Texans who own oil and gas properties. We don't need the Canadians to dump their oil on our markets anymore than we need them dumping their trees.
Sorry, this is good for Texas and not so bad for the rest of you.
I have several down there that remain capped because there isnt much left of anything under there.
I thought this was an M$B post, at first. LOL
Don't worry guys, Solyndra will provide enough energy to keep us independent of Middle Eastern oil. Big O's got our back on this one.
No need for Canandian oil, when we will possess Iran and whole middle east soon.
Yes.
That $1T spent in Iraq yielded HUGE dividends. Time to double down in Iran.
Well, in all fairness we still have oil priced in dollars, that has to be worth something?
Back of the envelope gives me 8 yrs of 9 million bbpd or 26 billion barrels of imports. Call it 25 billion or $40 a barrel.... probabaly less than the change in cost of oil in dollars if the oil-dollar relationship was not maintained at gunpoint....
The second largest shotgun wedding ever.
Maybe not for you and the other peons.
yes who knew we could get such constitutional return for our money. and it was our money
Governors need to stand up, show us you got some balls and start laying Pipe. FU Fed.
you have to put down the pipe before you start laying it...
I think it goes something like that...
Speaking of "laying pipe", I hear the porn industry is leaving LA if condoms have to be used........on well, no more facials.
If there is any doubt amongst you hopey changey crowd that this guy is the absolute worst Prez Amerika has ever seen, then you are delusional. Reelect this douche and watch Amerika become Greece.
http://vegasxau.blogspot.com
You say that as if this guy actually made the decision himself. He has nothing to say about this, I assure you. I doubt he even gets to decide what he eats for breakfest every morning, let alone where to run pipelines. He does suck, though. You are correct about that.
well said. Labels aside, things and presidents will only get worse on the downslope.
why not just attack canada! maybe then real estate would fall!
Fucking shite.
Just fucking great.
Now Canada will sit and think a moment... and run PIPE to CHINA. Who will buy every fucking drop of the stuff and swallow too.
There is a-coming day when the USA is going to REGRET this action. They have no idea how good the Keystone would have been.
Just finished up a 'phone-in town hall' with our Congresscritter and he's saying Canada is already meeting with China regarding their own Nothern Gateway project. China has it's own massive pipeline projects ongoing so I'm wondering if Canada's Harper decides to pull the trigger on NG over the objections of the Greenies, just how fast they can get that pipeline built? It seems it would make sense since Canada already sells oil at a discount into US markets, if it sells to Asia it's at standard prices. That not only creates company revenue but government as well.
Clearly, this pipeline decision must be Bush's fault.
The a$$hole is aptly named Black Pajama.....this is just insanity. His basic plan appears to be to attempt to make oil expensive enough to make "greener " energy sources more competitive..
Monumentally stupid...
Obama: My Plan Makes Electricity Rates SkyrocketAll this is payback to Warren Buffet. All oil will be put on BNSF
Rail car tankers instead of the pipeline.
Warren gets onboard the tax the wealthy plan and Owebummer
Squashes. The pipeline
And the Union Tank co in Illinios cannot keep up with the orders for new stock rail tank cars.
+1
Eggggggsactly....
This is a holding pattern....The company line is at $95-100 it is profitable to extract tarsands otherwise they (the big oil co.’s) would just leave it alone.
Ultimately the koch's will get their way.
Awesome. Obama's radical green constituency trumps actual job creation.
This will be a long comment. Apologies in advance. But this subject is worth a read. It is a national security issue for the US and it is being trumped by some green radicals. Pretty sure there are more some actual kids in a California who could use a head start program, thank god $45m of TAX PAYER MONEY went to a head start program for TURTLES.
For an idea of how Canada is saying NO to the same Green radicals that Obama is embracing read this.....paying particular attention to the point about how Solars (green tech) was being pushed as official policy in 2007 http://opinion.financialpost.com/2012/01/09/terence-corcoran-a-war-on-green-radicals/
And this column on why the US as a Banana Republic:
The United States has become the world's ultimate Banana Republic, a nation choked by the "Build-Absolutely-Nothing-Anywhere-Near-Anyone" people who prowl its corridors of power.
.......
What's behind these battles is not the electorate but the rise, since the UN Copenhagen climate change fiasco, of a well-oiled, transnational environmentalism movement.
Borderless NGOs, with funds and contacts, have deputized themselves to impose a planetary agenda anywhere they choose to do so. In the past, environmental opposition has been locally based which made its participants accountable to the electorate, or back down, when their demands cost jobs or excessive damages to others or to the economy.
This transnational phenomena is a power unto itself. It scours the world for causes, except where it cannot generate headlines or results such as China, India, Russia or Appalachia where environmental degradation really is serious.
Instead, they have gone where the action, and publicity, is best and targets easy to pick off. Their favorite is the world's biggest Banana Republic.
........
(Just to clarify, Alberta's oil sands emissions are currently less than those generated by tiny Wisconsin's coal-fired power generation plants.)
They don't address the coal problem because they cannot win it. They pick their battles carefully and Canada, without any votes in the Senate or House of Representatives, is the current favourite target.
............
Environmentalists pick on anything that yields publicity.
There is a green-on-green battle in California's Mojave Desert over the development of gigantic solar farms. The first and biggest is environmental darling, BrightSource Energy, whose 3,600-acre project called the Ivanpah is under fire from greens over the few dozen tortoises who live on its site. Estimates by biologists are that 162 adult tortoises and 608 juveniles may live on the site.
That revelation caused federal officials to halt construction in April. Building proceeded after undertakings were obtained. These include allocation of a $45-million budget to mitigate risks for the tortoises, the employment of 40 full-time biologists and a "head start" program for hatchling and juvenile tortoises in which they are taken care of for at least five years to better their chances of surviving in the wild.
http://www.financialpost.com/opinion/columnists/American+nimbyism+real+threat+Canada/5626516/story.html
the risk to reward of that pipeline is just not worth it.
so we would rather see the Canadians export this oil to China. They are still going to get the oil out of the tar sands, it is just a matter of who they sell it to
What's the best case scenario if the pipeline works?
What's the worst case scenario if it's built and has a leak or a break?
Is it worth the risk? That's the question.
Not to nitpick but Wisconsin isn't tiny, it's a powerhouse Midwestern state that is even now building HUGE coal plants to go with the ones it already has. That's a lot of CO2.
I'd look up the population but the Internet is on strike.
I think "powerhouse" is a bit of strong word for a state with two cities (Milwaukee, Green Bay) and one college town (Madison)....
The bit with the desert tortoises is fascinating to watch via the print media. Apparently, they spend about 90% to 95% of their lives underground, so early estimates of their numbers have turned out to be completely inaccurate. Later estimates also proved to be completely inaccurate, but biologists have learned a lot about desert tortoises in rapid fashion. The solar companies have received permission to find and relocate the beasts but it is supposedly proving difficult. Journalists and photographers from the local media have not been allowed on-site of any of the solar farms in eastern Riverside county, outside of access to a few company-approved areas.
The competing interests are clear: The area is economically starved; the solar greens want the desert blanketed with solar plants; the wildlife greens want everything left natural. And the Salton Sea is drying up because of lower agricultural run-off, prompting an ambitious but unlikely plan for restoration: http://www.saltonsea.ca.gov/media/ppr_summary.pdf
Crazy days.
The risk that pipeline poses to the Ogallala Aquifer, one of the largest water sources in the world, is simply not worth it. A break in the pipeline could contaminate the drinking water supply for millions of people as well as ruin irrigation water for hundreds of thousands of square miles worth of farm land. It's just not worth it.
I'll agree with your point there...
Bot OTOH... The damn thing might be bone dry before long if people don't start wising up...
Nah, stupid people don't live that long.
But they have numbers and they can reproduce.
By then, that will happen within the FEMA camps, all of which will have "pristine" drinking water that dissuades conception.
Look no further than Obama's science czar to see that prediction become fact.
Stupid people seem to manage to live a very long time.
Well we better get started with them Plants to get salt out of ocean water on all three Coasts and pipe it inland.
Christ! The Colorado was nothing but a muddy bog by the time it reaches AZ/CA Border.
not to mention how many votes he would lose from the environmentalist left wing fringe. And we all know it's an election year. Keep it real.
It not a matter of environmentalism (for me at least) I'm no tree hugger and i don't run around ranting about man made global warming. But, if you look up a map of the proposed pipeline and a map of the Ogalala Aquifer, you will see that the pipeline goes right above it. Now picture what would happen if there was a break or leak in that pipeline (which is not uncommon). It would be a disaster. Millions with limited to no drinking water and crops dying on the vine. And for what? To save a few cents (maybe) on a gallon of gas and create a few thousand temporary jobs? To me, it just doesn't make sense in the long term. The potential loss vs. potential benefit does not provide a persuasive argument to proceed with that pipeline.
you sound like a socialist, next you'll be telling us "we believe the oil resources buried under america should be used only by americans for their benefit".
Quote by hugo chavez...........
How to win friends and influence people... Msssss O appears on "ICarly" show last pm- gotta start brainwashing the little ones- and this media created/owned putz allows this. Bullish for chevveee volt sellers - I guess. Damn, I'm tired of this stupid ass.
Good. We don't need to import any more oil from those hostile Canadians. In fact, I say we embargo those sons-a-bitches until they come clean on the fact that their bacon is nothing more than ordinary ham.
But it makes my Egg McMuffin so yummy
I'm Canadian, and in all my 40+ years, I've never heard anyone here call ham anything other than ham. Canadian Bacon is bacon, Canadian ham is ham.
Maybe it's an east coast/Maritmes thing, I'm a West Coast girl myself. (and yes, we shave our legs...even in winter!)
As for the pipeline, I don't know if they will pipe it to BC now, the envirofreakies are rabid out here too...
I've had both up there and down here.
Now there was one pretty in Winsdor.... whew. I might have ended up married with a houseful of kids by now.
You are wrong about this one. Exploitation of tar sands is bad for the US, for Canada, and bad for the world. The # of jobs created would be minimal.
Very Bullish!?
Yes, Bullish for Brita filters. Works like a charm.
It's kind of amazing how many people here seem willing to risk the drinking water supply of millions of people in order to (maybe) save 5 cents on a gallon of gas.
It's tragically comical.
We are a state fighting the Fracking for Nat Gas because way too many people have gotten sick very fast.
I rarely drink tap water these days. Yes we make coffee, tea, cook etc etc etc and that water is either pulled from a newly laid pipe to replace a depleted aquafier below ground.
But you can't irrigate a couple of hundred thousand square miles of farm land with bottled water can you?
You don't think Stalin, Mao or FDR could've done that? ;-)
Ya know. We produce 20% of the Nation's Rice out of irrigation in farms carefully crafted using space technology to the nearest two inches.
Unfortunately we had it all last year and have a surplus going into this one. And if this continues to be a dry winter for us, then we are going to have to plant something else.
is it some of that pure spring water, bottled two states over from a faucet?
Also, you're losing me in that last bit.
Do pipes create water? What difference does it make if the pipe is new or old, if it's the same geographic aquafier? Reminds me of my ex, she thought that if we used a new credit card it wouldn't "put so much" on the old one.
There is one in Maine on a hilltop. Something like 100 Acres. They drilled a pipe straight down, build a building big enough to house it and the filters. And then truck in empty bottles, labels and caps.
Truck and rail car loads of bottled water goes out.
Do those trains run on solar?
I was looking for anything solid on the actual economics of the pipeline, and couldn't find much. Then I thought EconoMonitor had a good one but......
http://www.economonitor.com/blog/2011/12/costs-and-benefits-of-the-keyst...
I just had to comment myself. After all this discussion of everyone missing the point, the author nails the economic benefits of moving...NORTH DAKOTA crude to market! I mean, come on.
So all you can conclude is that this Alberta thing is a dog. A knee-walking turkey. Just forget it. Hell I bet if it was approved they STILL wouldn't build in the end...because it sucks at making money. All politics.
Now, a pipeline from North Dakota to the Gulf...who wants in???
I think the fucking Country is choking on it's own albatross of Green crap, burned corn and exploding batteries.
Mad Max the movie was very good for it's time.
So, we just...add another albatross! I see. Works well with your screen name....wait a minute...are you funded by the Herrings and Sardines???
No.
I pick up what I can find and make the best of it. Story of my life.
Hope the farmers and ranchers that sold the land right of way rights to the pipeline company have cashed their checks!!!
This was expected. The Progressives are green crazy and don't care about jobs. The media will spin Republicans as environmental destroyers, yada, yada.
This was expected. TPTB are evil and don't care about jobs. The media will spin the politicos as environmental destroyers or saviors, yada, yada.
There, FTFY! (removed all that divide and conquer silliness)
The fact that Obama even has any input at all in the decision indicates an overbearing regulatory environment.
Now the Canadians can run the pipeline To BC where they can get the Brent price instead of WTI.
Loved the Canadian Bacon bit Ah?!!!
this guy cannot be deposed from the oval office soon enough
I sincerely disagree with this forums' derision on the Obama's administration's rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline.
Further research into the matter reveals that the Keystone pipeline runs through one of the most important aquifier in the MidWestern states
http://www.esquire.com/blogs/politics/ogallala-aquifer-6531527
Any oil spills will contaminate water source from Nebraska to Texas, with resulting water unable to supply agricultural output if and when an oil disaster strikes this pipeline.
Texas's hydrology report into the Keystone XL pipeline also show the pipeline route crossing the Carrizo-Wilcox aquafier, and environmental impact assessment show that Keystone XL pipeline if under durress and breaks (Black Swan event such as seismic fault stresses, or earthquakes), will create catastrophic environmental, agricultural, and human impact.
http://www.sierraclub.org/dirtyfuels/downloads/2011-03-hydrology-report.pdf
The Obama administration attempted to review the new Keystone XL pipeline project after a re-routing of the pipeline away from Nebraska through South Dakota, as a result of the environmental concern of Bitumen and aquafier contamination. This resulted in the delay in review and the postponement of Keystone Pipeline XL review until after the 2012 election
http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/2011/1110/Keystone-XL-pipeline-del...
The move by the Senate to force the President's hand in reviewing the Pipeline now instead of a new environmental impact assessment forced the President's hand in rejecting the Pipeline proposal as is due to insufficient information.
Zero Hedge prides itself in strong background research, and I sincerely enjoy the alternative financial viewpoints, albeit slightly more armageddonish. This issue, however, transcends just jobs. It impacts the American Agricultural heartland itself. Contamination of water sources doesn't just impact the present, it impacts all future generations!! It would be quite shortsighted to subject an aquifier vital in sustaining America's midwest agrucultre to contamination risks just to get a couple of temporary jobs.
You are going to experience an odd phenomenon. Your post will be junked...but nobody will dispute it because you are correct.
What does that really say about people?
A willingness to sacrifice drinking water, the most essential element to sustaining life, in order to save a few pennies on a gallon of gas is perhaps the high water mark of insanity and irrationality...yet, you can see it all over this thread. Amazing huh?
You mean toilet water?
Brawndo, it's got electrolytes.
Good points, and in any case the pipeline has not been "killed." The proposal will be modified and resubmitted. This is just a delaying action to get the debate out of the public view for a while (probably until after the election).
the pipeline already runs into this country.
How many oil pipelines already go through these aquifers? Hundreds. Is the aquifer currently in jeopardy? I dont think so.
Hundreds eh?
We used to take on 5mm gallons of DFM at Craney Island in about 4 hours from moored to castoff and I was told that the fuel was piped all the way from Texas.
I'm guessing that pipeline went through more than one aquafier, and it wasn't the only pipeline. Drive down the interstate and you'll see natgas or other standpipes, or the aerial placards marking where the pipes run across the roadbed.
I don't think hundreds is an overstatement on his part, especially in the middle of the country.
"I'm guessing that pipeline went through more than one aquafier"
Guessing being the operative word here.
I see your $4.00 gas and raise you to $5.00
"uses Bob Barker's voice"
HIGHER!
I am planning for 15 dollar gas and 20 dollar desiel. And also weapons to defend against parasites who will be roving the land looking for the fuel.
You know anyone can shank your gas tank in the night while you sleep.
Leaving you with a 2000 dollar repair./Replacement bill.
No surpise. Obongo hates oil, jobs, independent thinking, productivity...anything that makes it hard for him to utterly destroy this nation so he can turn it into a Marxist utopia with he and the rest of the smug proglodyte elitist trash running the whole show.
$10/gal gas this year and Obi-Wan-Can-No-Be is toast. Mitt Pompey gets elected and finishes the job of dismantling the real wealth creators in America. Creative Destruction, let's get on with it !
Come on guys, its Win-Win.
Two wings, same shitbird. You get my +1 brother.
The pipeline has not been "killed." The proposal will be modified and resubmitted. This is just a delaying action to get a no-win (for the administration) debate out of the public view for a while (probably until after the election).
Oil sands have an energy return on energy invested of 2:1.
Add an expensive pipeline, then its 1.5 to 1. It is stupid.
Well, it's a government (a.k.a. political) solution, so that goes without saying.
The pipelines already exist. All they are trying to do is cut out a 90-degree jog. Plus, there are plenty of existing pipeline systems connecting Houston and Port Arthur to everywhere else. This Keystone XL is just a wasteful, useless boondoggle, and a reward for the filthiest oil source in the world:
http://www-tc.pbs.org/wnet/need-to-know/files/2011/11/keystone-map.jpg
It's not worth it, any way you slice it. There is no EROEI, or actual ROI, involved in Tarsands production, and the enormous amounts of FRESH WATER and Natural Gas required to produce it could definitely be put to better purposes. Kill it, and keep it killed.
Tell me again WHY we needed this friggin' pipeline? If the whole idea is to transport Canadian crude to refineries along the Gulf Coast.....why not just build a new American refinery along the Canadian border? That way, the emminent domain land grab wouldn't span the lower 48, the maintenance costs would be centralized at one facility (or series of co-located facilities), and there would still be jobs involving the construction of the refinery.
Aren't we about 30 years behind in refining capacity anyway? Let's build a refinery right next to Canada and let our hoser cousins to the north worry about building the pipeline on their own soil leading to our refinery.
Is this too much common sense? Do I need to schedule a self-dome-thumping session at the nearest wall?
Help me out ZHers, what am I missing here?
The fact that government is merely the most organized form of crime?
the real reason to ship this to Gulf refiners is so that US refiners can then easily ship it over seas. The only winner in this scheme is the refiner that's shipping refined oil out of the US. The bullshit about it benefiting the average Joe in America is just that: Bullshit. That's one (of many) points so many people here seem to be missing.
The refining business isn't so hot when you have to cope with OSHA, EPA and unions.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2012/01/18/bloomberg_articlesLXZUWE6S972E01-LY03T.DTL
Well now I'm even more confused. We're shutting down refineries due to 'lack of demand'? I thought the whole reason we paid so much for gasoline was because of our dependence on OPEC born out of our lack of refining capacity, among other factors.
If that SFGate article is correct, and demand is trending downward, why the hell are prices so high and why do we need a transcontinental pipeline to transport something for which refining capacity is being removed?
Clearly this calls for a more beer-oriented analytical approach.....oh, BARTENDER!
I'm a bit late, but you clearly have not been following things too closely.
There has never been a lack of refinining capacity in the states, for the past 35 years, there has been at least twice as much refining capacity as crude oil production in the US...
As for price, you should take a look at what China and India are doing....
Face it, you Americans are not worthy of Canadian oil....
But seriously, Trans-Canada fucked up the choice of corridor... trying to save a few % on a massive project. The delay will cost them more in lost revenue then making the proper choice in the first place...
As for jobs, the pipeline is a job killer. Laying the pipeline is temporary work, the 50 or so permanent jobs from monitoring the pipeline are dwarfed by the jobs lost in moving the other by other means....
Like the Obama Bucket Brigade!
From what I undersatnd, Canada was really just going to pipe all the sewage generated in Quebec through that pipeline into America.
Canada will build an alberta to BC pipeline on its own. They prosper either way, they don't care. As for the "jobs," union though they may be, the Chicago Transit Authority just announce a rebuilding of several CTA stops at a cost or $300,000,000, paid for by a fed grant. Who needs resource building when you can just print.

the tar sands are our new SPR.
On the same day the 2nd largest oil refinery in the US closed for good. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2012/01/18/bloomberg_articlesLXZUWE6S972E01-LY03T.DTL
Great call, asshole.
Bottom line, as long as the 1% remain in power they will ever allow legislation to pass that actually benefits the 99. As usual, this is just another use of a hot issue to grab power. Healthcare, terrorism, immigration, environment; it’s all been used to tighten the noose around our necks.
They may or may not have made the correct decision here, but to think that the final decision was made over concern for the environment or American population as a whole is beyond delusional.
The original "Wolf in Sheep's clothing," Warren Buffett, himself is behind this
http://www.americantradition.org/?tag=obama-keystone
But it turns out there may be more than a political payoff.
“Killing the Keystone XL pipeline may help one of the world’s richest men get richer. North Dakota’s booming oil fields will now grow more dependent on a railroad the president’s economic guru just bought,” Investor’s Business Daily write.
“Interestingly, another billionaire, Obama economic inspiration Warren Buffett, stands to benefit from the Keystone XL pipeline delay,” writes IBD in its Nov. 16 editorial “Billionaire Buffett’s Bakken Boom.”
“As oil production ramps up in the Bakken fields of North Dakota, plans to use the pipeline to transport it have been dashed. As a result, North Dakota’s booming oil producers will have to rely even more on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railroad, which Buffett just bought, to ship it to refineries.
“Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway has agreed to buy Burlington Northern Santa Fe in a deal valuing the railroad at $34 billion. Berkshire Hathaway already owns about 22% of Burlington Northern, and will pay $100 a share in cash and stock for the rest of the company,” IBD writes.
It’s Buffett’s largest-ever investment – so you know he’s pulling out all the stops to make money off it.
Now, I love profit.
But I’m a dedicated free marketer.
Using the power of the Oval Office to eliminate your campaign funders’ competition, knowing full well they’ll share the profits with your re-election campaign, that is crony capitalism.”
my god would someone actually learn some facts before commenting?
here is some facts, learn em, love em, live em.
Fact, canada is already our largest supplier of oil
fact, this xp pipeline already comes INTO THE US.
fact, this pipeline is actually just an extension.
fact, its is the koch brothers, yeah those douchebages who are behind this, and are looking to make a wiindfall.
fact, the number of jobs that would be gained from this extension is a few hundred, thats all.
Sorry, its not worth risking environmental damage for a few hundred jobs so some douche bags named Koch can make another few billion.
I don't agree with everything you said, but I will admit that you *get* it..
A lot of people commenting here that don't know shit about midstream.
They killed it because it would have created jobs in red states. Don't pretend that Clinton and Obama think or know anything beyond themselves or their political allies. You can't build anything in this country without bribing these people.
Just connect it to BC and export the oil to China instead. Fuck the Americans, they're destroying their currency anyway.
Could you please quantify the number of permanent jobs? Not temporary ones.
And no, there will be no pipeline to BC (for a number of reasons) and why would you care if there was? It is not like it is your fucking oil to do with as you see fit....
Permanent jobs, like the ones the stimulus created?
I dunno, what does your strawman have to do with anything?

...relax, it's only Archie Bunker. Lol
If we could rely on Transnational Corporations to do a proper job building and maintaining pipelines and other drilling/mining efforts, it would be worth discussions to consider them, however, when you look at the record and see that maximum profit at the expense of safety and environment is the mode of operation you have to consider the bigger downside costs and risks.
This pipeline threatens the Ogallala Aquifer which supplies fresh water to peoples of the midwest.
Why should the people of the US agree to the risk of water contamination when the corporations that own the oil will sell it to the highest bidder and that is not necessarily the US.
Remember, in the same way that US corporations plundered and dirtied environments in the third world to take their riches, now those companies are Transnational and will trash the US to sell to the highest bidder.
Detroit is bankrupt as well

Oil is old technology.
NASA just confirmed cold fusion is real, and two corporations are getting ready to move into production with home reactors.

Our nation needs a new leader, one with clarity of vision, strength of will and a strong lean central government that can execute every command of the beloved leader. I am that leader. Vote Gamma735 2012. In my first act, I will abolish the constitution, the fed and the legislative branches of government. You will only have to swear your loyalty to me personally and I can guarantee your security. Gamma735 over the former USA! Together we can make our Empire great again!
Strategists have worked out it'll be cheaper to invade Canada, when the time comes?
Part of destroying America's economy is choking off new energy supplies and allowing the infrastructure to deteriorate.
That explains everything we see discussed here.
Who cares about some stinky old pipeline? Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has been named as a global cultural ambassador by the Obama Administration. Now that's getting the job done!
Read more here: http://www.sacbee.com/2012/01/18/4196720/abdul-jabbar-appointed-global.h...effing moron. he has a job, at least for now, so easy for him to say no.
So, can anyone explain to me why the price of Oil went down with this announcement?
Wouldn't Obama rejecting the plan put more strain on the project and as a consequence the price would go up?
Seems counter-intuitive to me.
Since we are talking about energy, just for the record, it was Bush, not Obama who guaranteed loans to Solyndra:

I doubt the President's motives were pure and I imagine this matter is far from settled, but I must say I am extremely surprised to see so many people cheering and parroting oil industry propaganda on a site so full of right-leaning conspiracy theorists worried about property rights, the North American Union, national sovereignty etc. KeyStone XL is an abomination to almost all things I thought this site held dear, but ZH is becoming so schitzo and partisan I guess I just don't get it anymore. http://www.tarsandsaction.org/spread-the-word/key-facts-keystone-xl/
The only thing the Keystone pipeline would have done is create chaos for decades as the government 1, starts to take land homes and business. 2, starts eminent domain and then steals the land and displaces thousands of homeowners and job losses as a result of all the closed businesses along the way. 3, finally builds the pipeline and sells the oil to china anyway with no benefit to the American people! If the republicans really wanted to help our country they would build a new state of the art refinery in N. Dakota. Then we could ship gas from there with minimum impact to the northern states or anywhere in the U.S. for the benefit of citizens. I’m amazed at how the republicans believe that the people are so stupid that we would think they are actually thinking of us the sheeple. No U.S. citizen would benefit from the pipeline. Its all smoke and mirrors and just pure BS! IMO obummer actually got this one right. GO Ron Paul!
Killing the Keystone XL Pipeline project is just the latest example of President Obama putting his own political fortunes ahead of what is best for the American people.
This video from Ezra Levant lays it all out in a clear and concise way!
