Obama Ordered The "Code Stux"

Tyler Durden's picture

When Iran's nuclear facilities were publicly crippled in 2011 by what then was considered a revolutionary computer virus which destroys physical equipment, many immediately assumed the virus originated in Israel for obvious reasons. They were wrong. In what can be described as the first presidentially-mandated and condoned act of cyberwarfare, one circumventing the War Powers Act of course, the NYT informs us that the order to physically impair Iranian sovereignty came from none other than the Nobel Peace prize winning president: Barack Obama.

From the NYT:

From his first months in office, President Obama secretly ordered increasingly sophisticated attacks on the computer systems that run Iran's main nuclear enrichment facilities, significantly expanding America's first sustained use of cyberweapons, according to participants in the program.

Mr. Obama decided to accelerate the attacks - begun in the Bush administration and code-named Olympic Games - even after an element of the program accidentally became public in the summer of 2010 because of a programming error that allowed it to escape Iran's Natanz plant and sent it around the world on the Internet. Computer security experts who began studying the worm, which had been developed by the United States and Israel, gave it a name: Stuxnet.

At a tense meeting in the White House Situation Room within days of the worm's "escape," Mr. Obama, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and the director of the Central Intelligence Agency at the time, Leon E. Panetta, considered whether America's most ambitious attempt to slow the progress of Iran's nuclear efforts had been fatally compromised.

"Should we shut this thing down?" Mr. Obama asked, according to members of the president's national security team who were in the room.

Told it was unclear how much the Iranians knew about the code, and offered evidence that it was still causing havoc, Mr. Obama decided that the cyberattacks should proceed. In the following weeks, the Natanz plant was hit by a newer version of the computer worm, and then another after that. The last of that series of attacks, a few weeks after Stuxnet was detected around the world, temporarily took out nearly 1,000 of the 5,000 centrifuges Iran had spinning at the time to purify uranium.

This account of the American and Israeli effort to undermine the Iranian nuclear program is based on interviews over the past 18 months with current and former American, European and Israeli officials involved in the program, as well as a range of outside experts. None would allow their names to be used because the effort remains highly classified, and parts of it continue to this day.

For those confused - yes: this is an act of war. A New Normal war.

It appears to be the first time the United States has repeatedly used cyberweapons to cripple another country's infrastructure, achieving, with computer code, what until then could be accomplished only by bombing a country or sending in agents to plant explosives. The code itself is 50 times as big as the typical computer worm, Carey Nachenberg, a vice president of Symantec, one of the many groups that have dissected the code, said at a symposium at Stanford University in April. Those forensic investigations into the inner workings of the code, while picking apart how it worked, came to no conclusions about who was responsible.

And still America continues to wage war, subverting the constitution, without any Congressional approval, and without even telling the population what is really happening. Because it is "for its own good."

A similar process is now under way to figure out the origins of another cyberweapon called Flame that was recently discovered to have attacked the computers of Iranian officials, sweeping up information from those machines. But the computer code appears to be at least five years old, and American officials say that it was not part of Olympic Games. They have declined to say whether the United States was responsible for the Flame attack.

The "New Normal Gulf of Tonkin":

Mr. Obama, according to participants in the many Situation Room meetings on Olympic Games, was acutely aware that with every attack he was pushing the United States into new territory, much as his predecessors had with the first use of atomic weapons in the 1940s, of intercontinental missiles in the 1950s and of drones in the past decade. He repeatedly expressed concerns that any American acknowledgment that it was using cyberweapons - even under the most careful and limited circumstances - could enable other countries, terrorists or hackers to justify their own attacks.

"We discussed the irony, more than once," one of his aides said. Another said that the administration was resistant to developing a "grand theory for a weapon whose possibilities they were still discovering." Yet Mr. Obama concluded that when it came to stopping Iran, the United States had no other choice.

If Olympic Games failed, he told aides, there would be no time for sanctions and diplomacy with Iran to work. Israel could carry out a conventional military attack, prompting a conflict that could spread throughout the region.

Some call it irony, others collateral damage where people lose everything, including their lives. Semantics.

Remember though: they hate America for its freedoms.

Mr. Obama has repeatedly told his aides that there are risks to using - and particularly to overusing - the weapon. In fact, no country's infrastructure is more dependent on computer systems, and thus more vulnerable to attack, than that of the United States. It is only a matter of time, most experts believe, before it becomes the target of the same kind of weapon that the Americans have used, secretly, against Iran.

And it will be a shock, SHOCK  when the world retaliates against America.

I would be impressed if it was actually Obama who did the hacking.

How hilarious is it that the only difference between hacktivists and "whitehats" who hack on behalf of the military, is that the ladder is only more acceptable because they get green pieces of paper from the Government.

"...he first presidentially-mandated and condoned act of cyberwarfare, one circumventing the War Powers Act of course."

Since Bush started it, the 'article' is a bit short on details about Bush and the Bush cabinet deliberations - if there were any, probably not since he tended to think he was still captain of the Andover (Exeter is SO much better) cheerleading squad and say, 'we are going in boys! beat Exeter!'. I met the idiot-named GW Bush when he was running for president the first time: I didn't think he was presidential material and truly, neither did he. What a mistake and what damage to the country. I suppose but in this area that's inevitable given the state of technology and therefore this Stux thing will ultimately look like a chicken-or-the-egg type event in hindsight.

It would take a real leap of faith to believe that absent Obama's actions China, Russia or someone else wouldn't be attempting the same on the US if they haven’t been already.

There are certainly precedents in history where one state has manipulated, planted or intercepted information that caused physical damage to another state that it was not officially at war with.

Hell, if Roosevelt were in his 20th term he probably would have sold the Iranians some of our older nukes – secretly rigged up Trojan Horse style.

One has to wonder why the urgency and persistence given the lack of evidence of any intent on the part of any countries in the middle east to attack the US people. The obvious and yet unconventional answer is that the government somehow KNOWS something about future events that it will not tell us (knowing the future through whatever means would incite questions that they do not want to answer)... and is reacting to change those future events.

I mean seriously, the people in charge are otherwise acting so completely irrationally (and evily) and coming up with the most bogus of excuses ... passing off lies so big, that people do not dare challenege them for fear of learning a truth too horrible to imagine.

Not just the US, but China and Russia as well.  Understandably they will not be easily pushed around, but it does seem that all these super powers are in a mad-dash to secure as many natural resources as possible.  Granted, any government (and people) in history has always strived to retain and control the fruits of the earth, but it has never seemed so rushed before, as if they know time is running out...

this propaganda is obviously designed:

  • to give israel and mossad cover (just americans here, 0'course)
  • to make prez0 and his team seem tough (like mittens is talking~ ~to attract the sheeeple to his candidacy)
  • this is uncharted territory and they're doing the best the can for the USA USA USA
  • with them:  memebers of the nat'lSec'tyTeam  who reported on this top secret stuff?  L0L!!!
  • to display our crying fuking  need 4 them to act in secret for us:  to protect us and keep us from having to worry about anything, especiallt wtf these criminals are doing in our names as int'l NW0 fascistas
  • now when these same fascist mofos take the intermets down, they'll have everybody knowing they are telling the truth when they say iran did it?  can't wait, canU?

panetta is now D0D, of course...  so the moral is: don't change horses or  riders in the middle of this stream of evil terror and deluge of evilness of oppressed and brainwashed militants who just hate that we are so free

i guess after having lost a good friend to an Iranian IED it tends to lessen one's sympathy for that regime.  i felt Bush made a huge error by lumping Iran in with his so-called axis of evil, because  at that moment it seemed the regime over there was shaky, but that speech only gave the hard liners the upper hand. tragic.  this is the regime that mowed down the street demonstrations in Tehran with live ammo. i guess you've forgotten Neda. you probably don't know who she was. no, i don't care too much about their soveriegnty because that regime would slit your throat as soon as look at you. or set off a bomb in Times Square if they could, no problem. with all the commenta i didn't see one with any real thought about alternatives at this point.  not one.

You seem to have no knowledge of Israel carrying out terrorist attacks on AMERICA throughout the years.  Also, our US intel has reported that Israel has had more spies inside the US than any country IN HISTORY!  I almost forgot that Israel has had a history of stealing our sensitive intel and selling some of it to China.  Not to mention that they secretly stole uranium from us back in the 50s and 60's.

ISRAEL is the biggest threat to America's security, I'm sorry to tell you.  It takes courage to accept this fact.  They are using us royally.  I don't like it, and I WON'T stop informing people of these things, no matter how many down arrows I get.

no, i don't support it at all.  believe me, i thought the Iraqi invasion would prove to be the biggest strategic error this country had ever made.  i e-mailed the white house daily(you could do that in those days) begging them not to invade that country.  it was an invasion built on lies and falsehoods. my comment then was Iraq would be like Norhern Ireland on steroids. it all came to pass as i had expected. Iran is a different story.  That regime is aiding Assad in Syria.  they would use a bomb if they make one. The last thing i would want is for the US to bomb Iran. if there was a way to connect with the peolple and weaken the hardliners i'm all for it.  and yes, the IED was made in Iran, so if you want to joke about saudi passports or whatever have a good laugh. but, he's dead. and he was a great guy. and the IED came from Iran. now tell me again to give it a rest.  who said anything about special? he should never have been put there.   Rest?  that sounds something you say after a dispute over a bad call in baseball. by the way, he was a engineer sent there to rebuild the power grid. his brother, also a great guy, died under the rubble of tower 2 trying to drag an injured woman from the building.  he was about 10 feet from the door.

I'm sorry for all of your pain.  But please read this:

An elite U.S. Army study center had devised a plan for enforcing a major Israeli-Palestinian peace accord that would require about 20,000 well-armed troops stationed throughout Israel and a newly created Palestinian state.

The SAMS paper attempts to predict events in the first year of a peace-enforcement operation, and sees possible dangers for U.S. troops from both sides.

Of the MOSSAD, the Israeli intelligence service, the SAMS officers say:

“Wildcard. Ruthless and cunning. Has capability to target U.S. forces and make it look like a Palestinian/Arab act.”

The amazing thing about this is that this story was reported in the Washington Post on September 10, 2001.

Another question to consider is: "Why did they want this iniformation to get out at this time"

Everyone knows that no mainstream media outlet would EVER print something like this without the express approve of the highest powers.

Couple this with Bilderberg making the transition from covert to overt (and I think, based on the attendee list Bilderberg is now only a distraction ... they could all be simply playng tiddliwinks inside), there appears that there is a transition in how the powers that be want to be perceived.

They WANT people to know who is doing what (or at least think they know). Why? Good question and easy to guess at, but may take some time to figure out the truth.

Ruminate on this if you like conspiracies (and the only thing making it credible is that contributors are dead):

Precisely the question.  The timing of this release (or that it even got out at all!), from a mouthpiece of the Obama adminstration is striking in its obviousness. Nothing so closely held is ever released without a reason, so what is the reason?

The entire current economic situation, revelation of Obama's Communist / Marxist upbringing, combined with increasing war rhetoric and now this, all seems incredibly contrived, almost as if whatever powers that be had planned a single term for Obama followed by a Romney election.  Is Romney really "The Chosen One" that all this has been designed for, for some nefarious pourpose?

The first 8 minutes of the NASA vid reminds me of a class I took in college, "Space, Weapons and War" which essentially reiterated that if you control the high ground with enough firepower, you win.  The rest of the video is crap about faking the moon landings and Illuminati conspiracies - definitely tinfoil hat time.
