When globalization first started it looked so good - huge export markets for US products, lots of opportunities for American companies to produce their products abroad, and the world economy hummed along.
Now the downward spiral has begun as everyone (including China, where vendors are laying off people) is forced to compete and see who can work, and live, the cheapest (unless you win the DNA lottery, or are a CEO of a huge multinational corporation).
There is no escape from the law of diminution at the margin, except being born rich.
Unforunately Western governments have not caught on that they must play, too. They keep spending and increasing their payrolls, when they also need to see which government can operate the most efficiently.
For example: in Boston, the MBTA just raised fares 15-25% (it has to meet budget every fiscal per the Legislature). So what do they do? They expand the Transit Police force by hiring 3 new Lt./Sgt. supervisors at 6 digit salaries. This while the train track infastructure needs major work, and buses are getting eliminated as a result (and more to come probably next year, along with another fare hike). So my ride is cheaper and break down more, but there are more cops on the trains. Thanks, MBTA!

Then they fell asleep at the wheel as the new era of quarterly bonuses based on immediate savings (ie. headcount reduction) came together with the engineered bubbles in LBOs, dotcoms, and then property speculation.
Product development and improved service delivery were just "too hard" when a quick buck could be made from Greespan's very deliberate largesse. Only the Germans stayed on the path.....

Germany and China (and others) have heavily-subsidized their photovoltaic industry. The Koch brothers are very concerned that Obama, in a $785 billion stimulus package, spent about $10 billion subsidizing the green energy industry here. Much of that investment was sucessful, but some was not - this is a competitive industry with, as we've said, substantial govt subsidy by our global competition.

Did people in the green energy industry support Democratic candidates? Of course they did, just the way the financial services industry sends 5X as much money to Romney PACs as it does to Obama. Frankly, the rapid price drop in photovoltaics was worth every penny, IMO. PV is now competitive with grid electricity in Europe (at their 16 cents/KW hour), and on the US East Coast. It is not competitive with the lower rates (down to 8 cents/KW hour) found in other parts of America - but PV panel prices continue to drop fast, so we're getting there. Cheap, 100%-renewable, local power; what's not to like? Unless your the Koch brothers...or a brainwashed TeaBagger. You have to search for the actual facts, and learn to think for yourself.
