Obama Teleprompter Quits, Will Still Write Comedy But In Hollywood

Where does one start with this one. The WaPo reports that Jon Lovett, an Obama speechwriter and the reigning champion of official Washington’s stand-up comedy circuit, is quitting his job as the teleprompter's telepronpter. "In mid-September, Lovett, 29, plans to leave the administration to write for television out West. “It’s always been a dream of mine to write comedy and be creative,” said Lovett, who insisted that the current West Wing woes had nothing to do with his timing. “I would like to be able to write in my own voice.” Uhm, Lovett may not have noticed, but his work over the past 2 years has directly created some of the most profoundly hilarious comedy in the history of the "free world."

Lovett is the latest Washington communications professional to try to translate his skills in campaign spin, prepared remarks and press releases into entertainment for the masses. His dream of branching out, or cashing in, with a screenplay or sitcom is one New York magazine writers and editors have long harbored. They’ve had so many stories optioned — if not actually made into movies — that formal relationships between New York news outlets, talent agencies and studios have become commonplace. The success rate of Washington writers is worse, perhaps because the town’s highest accolade is “insider,” or because a city populated by self-styled alphas isn’t exactly a breeding ground for comedic angst.

“It’s a town that really showcases a pretty limited number of skills,” Reid Cherlin, a good friend of Lovett’s, who recently left a White House communications job to pursue a writing career in New York. “When you talk about being funny, or doing entertainment, what you are really talking about is stepping back and thinking critically and making connections.”

Of course, none of this has anything to do with "president Zero's" recent performance. Then again, Kutner, aka Kumar, aka Kal Penn, who was suicided on House just so he could join the Obama admin some years back, has also had enough.

Kal Penn, who left a successful acting career for a youth outreach position in the Obama White House, and then last month returned to Hollywood, where he is developing a sitcom set at the United Nations and appearing in the show “How I Met Your Mother,” explained that the dearth of creativity in D.C. left him hungering for L.A., and the lack of intellectual life in L.A. left him longing for D.C.

“My view of D.C. and L.A. is that they’re almost the yin and yang,” said Penn, who described Lovett as a kindred creative spirit with whom he brainstormed short films last summer.

That's ok: we are confident that the raw material alone, with or without spin, will provide for at least one and a half more years of endless amusement and uncontrollable cackling. That is, until the military-industrial complex reminds everyone just who is in charge, and ends the humor with a bang.

Speaking as a 25 year old entrepreneur that successfully developed a multi-million dollar internet company before even graduating college, I'd say the speech writer's age does not necessarily preclude him from being effective.

It's fair to disagree with the writer's stupid politics. But stop discriminating by age. It's fallacious and is something a superficial socialist would do.

After all, the speech writer obviously must be talented, otherwise a political party that relies so heavily on crafty propaganda wouldn't have used him.
