Obama Wants His Drone Back

Tyler Durden's picture

Several days after being humiliated by Iran which either shot down a EQ-170 drone, or worse, hacked into its navigation system and landed it, Obama has decided to double down, and stick the other foot in his mouth. As ABC reports in connection with Obama's handling of this embarrassing predicament, ""We've asked for it back. We'll see how the Iranians respond," Obama said at a news conference. Obama said he wouldn't comment further "on intelligence matters that are classified." Great, the only problem is Iran will never return it, as they have already indicated, for the simple reason that it has already been reverse engineered 5 ways from Sunday somewhere deep in the bowels of one of China's unpopulated cities, which just doubles as a very populated military intelligence base. The only good news is that within 6-9 months every American will be able to buy a personal stealth drone for a new low, low price at their friendly neighborhood Wal-Mart. Our only concern is whether FoxConn will be able to handle the supply of both iPads and straight for re-export drones: it would be ironic if this massive military embarrassment ends up as being a catalyst to short Apple.

From ABC:

A senior Iranian military commander, however, said on Iranian television Sunday that not only would Iran not turn over the drone, but warned of a "bigger response" to the "hostile act" of crossing into Iranian airspace.

"No one returns the symbol of aggression to the party that sought secret and vital intelligence related to the national security of a country," Iranian Islamic Revolution Guards Corps [IRGC] Lt. Commander Gen. Hossein Salami said, according to Iran's Fars News Agency.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said told reporters today that "given Iran's behavior to date, we do not expect them to comply" with Obama's request. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta also said he didn't expect Iran to hand over the drone, but told reporters, "I think it's important to make that request."

Several Iranian state-run media reports claim the country plans to "reverse engineer" the RQ-170 Sentinel and "will replicate the captured U.S.-built stealth aircraft in the future." In another report featured on Iranian television, an Iranian lawmaker claimed the country's experts were almost finished extracting data from the drone and would be using some of it to file a lawsuit against the U.S. for its "invasion," according to a report by The Associated Press.

"Military experts are well aware how precious the technological information of this drone is," IRGC Aerospace Forces Brig. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh said last week according to local reports. "It can play a key role in Iran's intelligence interactions with the U.S. rivals."

On the reason of the "interception"

According to U.S. officials, the drone was on a classified surveillance
mission for the CIA in western Afghanistan when operators lost control due to a malfunction. From there, the drone glided into Iranian airspace before crashing.

The Iranian military initially claimed it had "shot down" the drone, but later said it was able to bring it down with relatively little damage through an electronic attack. Pentagon spokesperson Capt. John Kirby told reporters last week there was no indication the drone was brought down by "hostile activity of any kind."

As for the top secret drone itself...

The Sentinel, an unarmed long-range surveillance drone known as The Beast of Kandahar, was such a closely held secret that the U.S. Air Force did not even acknowledge its existence until late 2009.

Panetta said it was unclear what technological value the drone could still have, depending on its condition.

Here's a guess: the non-technological value may be low but the barter value is enough to where Iran will leverage it to get anything and everything from the Chinese, to whom the technological value will be quite enough.

And as a reminder, here is the Iranian video of the captured drone:

You are correct. Stuxnet isn't the all-powerful virus people think it is, but a fairly targetted, mistake-ridden one that got out of control.

Writing multiplatform viruses is almost an impossibility. The only one I can think of targetted a obscure security hole and it required the same code to execute in two different languages, the author was described as not being human by many top-tier security researchers.

Because the drone has to have a remote tether, it would be trivial to blow up the electronics five minutes after loosing a tether to the main network. To not have common sense precautions like this in the hardware is a joke.

This this is 100% in Iranian hands because they wanted it in Iranian hands. Trojan? Maybe. False flag? Maybe.

But I can't buy the fact they they acidentially lost it AND its still intack (internals and all).

Not buying it.

Hey, this is all part of 'change we can believe in' and is transitory...

If WallyWorld starts selling these things for $29.95 the economy might improve. Who wouldn't rather have a drone than a toaster oven?

Think like this:

  • Do I have a tether?
  • If yes, wait 5 seconds and go to first bullet.
  • If no, start counting. If I count to X, pull pin on grenade.

All this system needs to work a stand by battery and very simple control systems. You could even be paranoid and make the battery for the trigger mechanical. There is no excuse to leave it intact if control is lost. There are a million ways to engineer that solution, many of them incredibly simple.

So, my conclusion: false flag.

I mean, amazing we can this shit in Afghanistan for TEN years, but then, suddenly right when we need a good reason to pick a fight ... low and behold ...

Yes, shooting down drones would become so much easier - just use jammer to break the connection, then watch it blow up. Besides, if Iran or China indeed hijacked drone controls, then drone itself would never recognize that it had lost tether, just would pick up a new one. Makes the whole thing pretty much pointless. Point is, UAV are at this point in time very vulnerable to electronic warfare, maybe with AI they can become more autonomous and less vulnerable to that type of attack, but then it's a whole different story. At least there is no pilot to bargain for:

On February 10, 1962, Powers was exchanged along with American student Frederic Pryor in a well publicized spy swap for Soviet KGB Colonel Vilyam Fisher (aka Rudolf Abel), a Soviet colonel who was caught by the FBI and put in jail for espionage, at the Glienicke Bridge in Berlin, Germany.

Thank you, that's I meant when said 'but then it's a whole different story' :) Anyway, point is, drones are very vulnerable in a war with more or less sophisticated foe as the link between drone and command center can be compromised fairly easily. What they are best fit for, is the suppression of low-tech insurgents who possess neither modern AA, nor means to wage electronic warfare. Upside of course is you don't lose a pilot if thing goes down, the downside, you don't really know who else might be able to control it.

Maybe even getting it back with wax job and a full tank of fuel?

Maybe went through our ambassador?

Nagasaki is famous in the history of Japanese Christianity. Not only was it the site of the largest Christian church in the Orient, St. Mary’s Cathedral, but it also had the largest concentration of baptized Christians in all of Japan. It was the city where the legendary Jesuit missionary, Francis Xavier, established a mission church in 1549, a Christian community which survived and prospered for several generations. However, soon after Xavier’s planting of Christianity in Japan, Portuguese and Spanish commercial interests began to be accurately perceived by the Japanese rulers as exploitive, and therefore the religion of the Europeans (Christianity) and their new Japanese converts became the target of brutal persecutions.

Within 60 years of the start of Xavier’s mission church, it was a capital crime to be a Christian. The Japanese Christians who refused to recant of their beliefs suffered ostracism, torture and even crucifixions similar to the Roman persecutions in the first three centuries of Christianity. After the reign of terror was over, it appeared to all observers that Japanese Christianity had been stamped out.

However, 250 years later, in the 1850s, after the coercive gunboat diplomacy of Commodore Perry forced open an offshore island for American trade purposes, it was discovered that there were thousands of baptized Christians in Nagasaki, living their faith in a catacomb existence, completely unknown to the government – which immediately started another purge. But because of international pressure, the persecutions were soon stopped, and Nagasaki Christianity came up from the underground. And by 1917, with no help from the government, the Japanese Christian community built the massive St. Mary’s Cathedral, in the Urakami River district of Nagasaki.

Now it turned out, in the mystery of good and evil, that St. Mary’s Cathedral was one of the landmarks that the Bock’s Car bombardier had been briefed on, and looking through his bomb site over Nagasaki that day, he identified the cathedral and ordered the drop.

At 11:02 am, Nagasaki Christianity was boiled, evaporated and carbonized in a scorching, radioactive fireball. The persecuted, vibrant, faithful, surviving center of Japanese Christianity had become ground zero.

And what the Japanese Imperial government could not do in over 200 years of persecution, American Christians did in 9 seconds. The entire worshipping community of Nagasaki was wiped out.

Tyler,

Your cynicism has reached a new level! Yes, it is obvious looking at the condition of the drone that they did not shoot it down, but even worse, hacked into the system and took control of the drone. So American intelligence and technology has been hacked. And that asshat Obama asks for it back? Excuse me Iranian people who we were spying on, can we please have our spy toy back? what an ass! also, please excuse typos. Working on my iPad!

Something isn't right any way you look at it.  The Iranians don't seem too concerned about retaliation in the form of bombing of the storage location as evidenced by the photos released.  They didn't try to hide where they had it at all. It seems like our governement could easily identify the building it is stored in for easy attack by a Tomahawk or some other 'smart' weapon.  From the photos it looks like the drone is in a fucking school gymnasium (painted wood floor etc.).  It seems like it should be relatively easy for our gov-mint to ID where it is stored at.  Lets see:  large brick building, steel support colums spaced ??? feet apart, windows at the top of the walls.......   That should narrow down the list of buildings it is kept in and with google earth or higher res spy satellite photos that surely must exist, seems like it should be easy to figure out.

Here is the Pentagon spokesman official statement.

 http://www.businessinsider.com/us-drone-displayed-on-iranian-tv-is-a-fake-2011-12

Counter measures will ensure it fried it's self electronically.

I had a lenghtly talk about this last night with someone who knows a little something about these birds. He agrees, it's not ours, but at this point, if it is, it's a 5 million dollar paper weight. If it's not, it's 400 lbs of styrofoam with installed aluminum parts. It's not an issue about the bird anymore, were past that, it's going to turn into a political blunder or NATO policy, either way, they TPTB are going to do whatever they want anyway in the wake of this new development.
Relax, Iran has their own drones and there is nothing on board this dead bird salvageable for China to retrieve. I know it has no communication if it is ours and they know it too, it was being filmed and photographed outdoors in that propaganda video which would be a no-no if they even had a suspicion that some of the birds electronics may still be alive, it's bunker buster bait and I wouldn't want to be with 1/2 mile of that bird seemingly dead or not. That should have been the dead giveaway that she is certaintly dead and rendered useless or truely a fake.

Here is another article I found.

My position is I don't care if it's fake or real, but the consequences of this situation will be. It's just one big Political Football now that smacks of an airstrike.

The Pentagon spokesperson says it's not the CIA's bird, so why would Obarfo ask for it back after that briefing? They want war if it's fake or not, now they have segway to go in and strike Bashire just for playing along.

http://www.tlj-news.com/2011/12/08/us-american-stealth-drone-shown-on-iran-tv-is-a-fake/

So to answer your question of, if it's fake, why would O-fuc head ask for it back? My simple answer is he is a degenerate Bank sock puppet that stands to make his buddies alot of money and gain more power by waring with Iran.

Typos are the only giveway that humans wrote them. Cause "reporters" these days are brain dead.

If you must call anyone "bitchez", it should now be directed at the U.S. Senate and Dept. of Defense for their lack of having any balls. Both the helicopter tail lost in Pakistan during the Bin Laden raid and  this drone both should have been tracked and destroyed. How naive of Obama to ask for the drone back. I really hope the U.S. military gets its balls back before the "bitchez" hand over all of our top technology to fucking terrorists. Obama should tell the academics to fuck off while he tests out some of those new bunker busters on the "bitchez" that now posses America's military crown jewels. Fucked up it is.

Anyone who understands even the basics of energy and thermodynamics knows that it's only an issue when running incandescents during the cooling season; and, really, I'm in a northern latitude, so when it's warm I have more sun and less need for lights.  During the heating season those lights are giving light AND heat, heat that does NOT go to waste!

So, now I have to have bulbs with mercury in them?

Oh, and do you want to know of an even bigger trick?  Compare the number of lumens and watts between equivalent CFLs and LEDs.  If you were like me you probably believe(d) that the LEDs were more efficient... (I suspect that this is all a way to churn technology [so it cans "save" us] and cover up the mercury issue).

Fuck, I use incandescents to warm my pump house.  I use them to brood fowl!

Ok Ladies & Gentlemen...I agree with my fellow ZHers who are VERY SKEPTICAL of the Obama administration's actions in this particular instance...not in any paranoid sense...let's try to be objective...Obama, Panetta, Clinton, & the other cronies of the administration have not maintained their positions in the rat's nest of Washington DC without consistently employing strategies that exploit the weakness of others in order to provide themselves & their 'gang members (DNC/RNC are exactly the same at this point in my opinion) with an express & explicit advantage...Do mistakes occur that seem improbable? absolutely, however, I cannot believe that THESE predators are the type of individuals that leave things of this nature to chance...Although like many other Americans I do not possess the more detailed thesis that supports this one action - I would bet my paycheck that this is a step in a definitive plan that has a far greater implication than Obama wants his ball back nonsense...Moreover, as is normally the case as the cascade of actions & their contingent steps begin to drive to some set of compelling events my heart grows heavy as I recognize that the lives of American soldiers, saliors, marines & airmen will be put at risk...My question - Does the risk warrant the sacrifice of American lives & treasure to protect this country or is it to exploit an advantage for those from the Washington DC Gang & their leecherous 'supporters'? Think about it...What I would not give to have McCain & Levin tried for treason...unfortunately, it is my belief that the enemy within continues to exploit the legacy of an external enemy...May God Bless & protect the US...

In the Land of Conspiracies, He Who Dares, Wins (Qui audet adipiscitur).  A little cliche and slogan mincing there.

I suspect China already had all the RQ-170 technology, including the ability to hack the thing and land it.  They got their hands on it years ago via espionage.  They could not, however, just produce their own identical drones without revealing "sources and methods" or jeopardizing an intelligence asset.  Thus, in order to protect, or be able to disavow, their own intelligence successes, the best they could do was to teach Iran how to hack the thing and bring it down.  It then becomes immaterial whether or not Iran shares the downed craft with China, since China already has all the details, blueprints, tech, etc.  It ends up being a win-win for both Iran and China.  Iran gets "face" by pretending they were able to hack into the thing on their own, plus they get to ridicule Obama.  Also, Iran can take the high ground by saying---truthfully---that they will not sell the drone to China as it is "Iranian National Property".  China can now produce and deploy all the drones it wants, the implication being that they only got the technical data from Iran.  Indeed, China can boost the perception of its engineering and manufacturing prowess by beginning to deploy its own RQ-170 drones next Tuesday, trying to pass it off as recently acquired technology, when in fact they have had it for years.

Of course I've just fabricated this entire theory, but let's see if anyone else comes up with the same view, and "proves" their assertion by linking to Zerohedge, under the assumption nobody will actually follow a link back to the one who pulled a theory out of his arse.  That is how the internet works, after all, right?

Finally, if I was Ahmedinejad, I would offer to give back the drone if Obama promises not to run for re-election, thus testing whether Obama can put patriotism and national security above personal gain.  Talk about a win-win!
