Obama Wants His Drone Back

Tyler Durden's picture

Several days after being humiliated by Iran which either shot down a EQ-170 drone, or worse, hacked into its navigation system and landed it, Obama has decided to double down, and stick the other foot in his mouth. As ABC reports in connection with Obama's handling of this embarrassing predicament, ""We've asked for it back. We'll see how the Iranians respond," Obama said at a news conference. Obama said he wouldn't comment further "on intelligence matters that are classified." Great, the only problem is Iran will never return it, as they have already indicated, for the simple reason that it has already been reverse engineered 5 ways from Sunday somewhere deep in the bowels of one of China's unpopulated cities, which just doubles as a very populated military intelligence base. The only good news is that within 6-9 months every American will be able to buy a personal stealth drone for a new low, low price at their friendly neighborhood Wal-Mart. Our only concern is whether FoxConn will be able to handle the supply of both iPads and straight for re-export drones: it would be ironic if this massive military embarrassment ends up as being a catalyst to short Apple.

From ABC:

A senior Iranian military commander, however, said on Iranian television Sunday that not only would Iran not turn over the drone, but warned of a "bigger response" to the "hostile act" of crossing into Iranian airspace.

"No one returns the symbol of aggression to the party that sought secret and vital intelligence related to the national security of a country," Iranian Islamic Revolution Guards Corps [IRGC] Lt. Commander Gen. Hossein Salami said, according to Iran's Fars News Agency.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said told reporters today that "given Iran's behavior to date, we do not expect them to comply" with Obama's request. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta also said he didn't expect Iran to hand over the drone, but told reporters, "I think it's important to make that request."

Several Iranian state-run media reports claim the country plans to "reverse engineer" the RQ-170 Sentinel and "will replicate the captured U.S.-built stealth aircraft in the future." In another report featured on Iranian television, an Iranian lawmaker claimed the country's experts were almost finished extracting data from the drone and would be using some of it to file a lawsuit against the U.S. for its "invasion," according to a report by The Associated Press.

"Military experts are well aware how precious the technological information of this drone is," IRGC Aerospace Forces Brig. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh said last week according to local reports. "It can play a key role in Iran's intelligence interactions with the U.S. rivals."

On the reason of the "interception"

According to U.S. officials, the drone was on a classified surveillance
mission for the CIA in western Afghanistan when operators lost control due to a malfunction. From there, the drone glided into Iranian airspace before crashing.

The Iranian military initially claimed it had "shot down" the drone, but later said it was able to bring it down with relatively little damage through an electronic attack. Pentagon spokesperson Capt. John Kirby told reporters last week there was no indication the drone was brought down by "hostile activity of any kind."

As for the top secret drone itself...

The Sentinel, an unarmed long-range surveillance drone known as The Beast of Kandahar, was such a closely held secret that the U.S. Air Force did not even acknowledge its existence until late 2009.

Panetta said it was unclear what technological value the drone could still have, depending on its condition.

Here's a guess: the non-technological value may be low but the barter value is enough to where Iran will leverage it to get anything and everything from the Chinese, to whom the technological value will be quite enough.

And as a reminder, here is the Iranian video of the captured drone:

Not to mention the fact that the Joint Chiefs of Staff now have a 'perfect' case to insist upon further research, investment & funding for the NEW & IMPROVED Drone technology...I mean if the Chinese & the Iranians have reverse engineered this version of the technology it is in America's best interest to forge ahead in order to ensure her safety...Just wish the testing for such a technology could be carried out on Dick Cheney...perhaps we can disguise the drone & Cheney could take it hunting...

That's exactly it. We need to spend $200B or so to get a new fancy drone that an E-4 can land in Iran in 2021.

Hm, playing conspiracy theory... One could also say the drone was purposely placed because the US knows that *insert country* knows how to hack the drone and take it down and this is an effort to probe the true capabilities of the "enemy".  One could go further and say that there were purposeful design flaws that would allow the US to access any copies in the future.

Me thinks this looks way too easy... The Iranians got something that is highly classified, something Iranians know the Americans have, and somehow the Americans are so stupid they let one fly right into Iran.... All with the Iranians getting the "upperhand"

The Art of War
By Sun Tzu (Translated by Lionel Giles)

II. The Attack by Fire, Sun Tzu said:

12. Having doomed spies, doing certain things openly for purposes of deception, and allowing our spies to know of them and report them to the enemy.

Not that "The Art of War" is gospel, but with Gore's internet, these techniques are not exactly subtle.  Personally, as someone living in the US, I'm more concerned with the "terrorists" on the other end of the joysticks running these suckers over North Dakota than I am over Iran.

But that's just me.

Come on you guys. We shut down their reactor, they have a mysterious explosion, a drone lands at the internatioanal airport.

Would you, being Iran, plug anything into that drone that could possibly ever spew bugs into your cyberspace? How about when they opened it to look inside, and the Bluetooth from hell enters everything within 5,000 feet that had a memory?

They opened it, they touched it, and you know they penetrated it. Dumb-asses.

Instead of spending billions spying on the American people, maybe the feds should spend a few million getting some human intel resources on the ground in Tehran.

Then we would know all about the location of this UAV and blow it to smithereens.

It's not impossible that the Russians or Chinese intercept all this radio traffic and decoded the controls of the drone. The Chinese even supply many components to defense contractors, so their chips could be built in to it.

Bush should have bombed the spy plane the Chinese captured, and Obama should destroy this one. Two consecutive presidents let the enemy keep our secret gear.

Hm.

The spy plane on that island was out in the open on an access ramp. It could have been blasted without killing anyone. They knew in real time when the drone was 'taken' and failed to destroy it. They effed up.

Let's get a grip here, why I don't know, but for the moment: why would Obama and Panetta and Hillary or Anyone make polite requests of Anyone Else they were spying on, let alone Iran, to please hand back the spy toy?

This is so transparently idiotic that it is for real. They asked in order to make Anyone believe it was all a bit of an electrical glitch. Just one of those things. They are that stupidly idiotic as to pose as innocents. There is no other conclusion and they do not appear in the least aware of their idiocy, or even the optics of their idiocy.

Given every other idiocy these people are perpetrating in the Mideast, at some point we must take the clues at face value - these are truly breathtaking idiots. Where is Biden, speaking of a really aggressive idiot?

This is what passes for leadership in the USA - is it any wonder that everyone on this site has become a raging alcoholic and not more than 4 in 100 is without a syringe full of cyanide, two repeater rifles, an impending divorce and will jump the first boat upriver to join Kurtz if but a moment of sobriety intervenes??

The ACLU has launched an investigation into what the deployment of this system would actually mean to the average US citizen. Billy Bob prepare for a strick.

After having visited your jolly fair totalitarian communist country last month and having the pleasure of being asked for "Ze papers" so many times I couldn't count my friends and we decided that - yup - you guys are next evil empire. Your military state is so open now compared to history that they don;t even hide their plans anymore cause your populace could give a shit.

The similarities to 1930's Germany are scary and it is clear to anyone visiting your country that the elites have turned your country into one scary fucking place.

Prepare accordingly - we in the world are

Several days after being humiliated by Iran which either shot down a EQ-170 drone, or worse, hacked into its navigation system and landed it...

Iran hacks US military technology, the Chinese pop a Sub up between the US fleet out on manouvres. 'Fuck Me' i'm worried how many Achillies heels the US military has we don't know about?!!!

Afterall it may be good at the overkill of pounding pheasent farmers in shock-and-awe (high tonnage zero fuking IQ) but as Veitnam, Iraq and Afghan shows you can win a battle but even the biggest thug on the planet still gets nipped to death and leaves with its tails between it legs.. losers x3

The Yank Thug Machine has had the global stage so long unapposed (no competition to improve the breed). One wonders just how good they are up against tougher opposition (China, Russia et al) when their big dumb expensive military morons keep losing to smarter sharper 3rd world poppy farmers

Obama has decided to double down, and stick the other foot in his mouth. As ABC reports ..Obama's handling of this embarrassing predicament, ""We've asked for it back. We'll see how the Iranians respond.".

..i.  gfy bankers rent-boy

you can thank Bill Clinton as it was his wheeling and dealing for chicom cash in his commerce department that provided the top secret Loral Space and Technology expertise to the Chicoms who have since shared with all their buddies, that allowed a take over of the communications with the drone. Gee thanks Bill, you always were kind of a drone yourself.

well this is a really good reason for not using chinese circuity, since the US doesn't do that design and manufacturing anymore. Not sure this one was tested well before being put in service huh?

Now, if you don't give it back we are really gonna be mad at you Iranians, ok? I'll show you at my next speech, I mean it, I really do.....:-p
