Obama's Labor Day Address

Tyler Durden's picture

No video here: just audio - like his last "Irene is a national catastrophe" videoconference from the vacation. Soundbites include the following (via Bloomberg):

  • OBAMA SAYS UNIONS CRUCIAL TO AMERICA'S MIDDLE CLASS
  • OBAMA SAYS AMERICA NEEDS 'STRONG LABOR MOVEMENT'
  • OBAMA SAYS U.S. AUTO INDUSTRY PROVED 'THE CYNICS' WRONG
  • OBAMA SAYS CONGRESS NEEDS TO 'GET ON BOARD' ON ROAD REPAIR WORK
  • OBAMA QUOTES 1948 TRUMAN SPEECH PRAISING UNIONS
  • OBAMA SAYS HE WILL STAY FOR COLLECTIVE BARGAINING

and the kicker:

  • OBAMA SAYS ROADS AND BRIDGES NEED REBUILDING IN U.S.

Enjoy America: you are about to have many bore roads and bridges rebuilt.

The White House

Office of the Press Secretary

Presidential Proclamation--Labor Day

Every day, hard-working men and women across America prove that, even in difficult times, our country is still home to the most creative, dynamic, and talented workers in the world. Generations of working people have built this country -- from our highways and skylines, to the goods and services driving us in the 21st century. On Labor Day and throughout the year, we celebrate our Nation's workers, and we commit to supporting their efforts in moving our economy forward.

The right to organize and collectively bargain is a fundamental American value. Since its beginnings in our country, organized labor has raised our living standards and built our middle class. It is the reason we have a minimum wage, weekends away from work to rest and spend time with family, and basic protections in our workplaces. Many Americans today are given opportunities because their parents and grandparents fought for these basic rights and values. The principles upheld by the honorable laborers of generations past and their unions continue to fuel the growth of our economy and a strong middle class.

This year has seen a vigorous fight to protect these rights and values, and on this Labor Day, we reaffirm that collective bargaining is a cornerstone of the American dream. From public employees -- including teachers, firefighters, police, and others who perform public services -- to workers in private industries, these men and women hold the power of our Nation in their hands.

In the last several years, we have pulled our country back from the brink, through a series of tough economic decisions. While we have come far, great challenges still face us. Many Americans are still struggling, and many are unemployed. My Administration is working tirelessly each day to promote policies that get Americans back to work. We will always strive to keep our fundamental promise that, in America, anyone who works hard and acts responsibly can provide a better future for their children. When we come together, there is no limit to what the American workforce can do.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim September 5, 2011, as Labor Day. I call upon all public officials and people of the United States to observe
this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities that acknowledge the tremendous contributions of working Americans and their families.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this second day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand eleven, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-sixth.

BARACK OBAMA

Want $1 trillion on infrastructure stimulus?  No problem.  We pay for it with $1 trillion cut from DoD and Medicaid transfer payments.

I guarantee you the moment it becomes clear they actually have to pay for the trillion via other spending cuts, they stop calling for it.

That in itself is not a problem. Finite resources are a greater problem. But if the new highways are built to facilitate speeds of up to 300 km/h in hydrogen powered super cars.. why not?

Time for America to meet European highway standards.

2) It will inspire the auto industry at least to build more fuel efficient and faster cars

Point is that infrastructure investments in the US are long overdue. This country's infrastructure is shit compared to Europe. Obama should bring rail into the equation as well. You realize China has better infrastructure standards than the US in some regions?

Blacks only comprise 12% of the population, so for him to secure 12% of the vote (providing EVERY black adult and child in America votes) really doesn't amount to much beyond the redneck racist pigs who try to make it into something.

I can guarantee you that far more than 12% of Americans are racist pigs and won't vote for him because of his color...  like you.  It far outweighs that small minority that you speak of.

I'd argue it's not Keynesian for the gov to spend Trillions like it has in the last few years but give it all to the filthy rich kleptocrats?

I suppose it's the poor peoples fault for the Housing disaster and the 10's of trillions in bailouts given to the banksters when the TOTAL residential mortgage market is around 12 trillion -

Or how rebuilding funds used after Katrina were handed out to firms who subbed out the work over and over until the 180.00 an hour price to the gov paid the actual schmuck who did the job $8.50 a hour.

That's not Keynesian - thats legalized Fraud and Theft.

Unskilled labor will always make poor wages, especially since we have a never ending inflow of it over our southern borders.

I don't get your other point. Even if I grant your apparent point that government was less corrupt in FDR's time, how would that be relevant to today's monstrosity?

Ain't it weird that the bigger government got, the more power it attained, the more corrupt it grows. Be sure and put you hopes on what you already know is a faithless whore.

Here Mr. President let me help you out seeing how Summers, Romer, Orzag, Goolsby and the rest of your economic team has not only" ditched" you but has left you on the "road" to nowhere. Here Mr. President, please take notes... Small business has produced over 65% of all new jobs over the last 15 years in this country...Not paving jobs, road work maintenance, census positions or weather stripping engineers. It is small business that carrys the weight in this country and you have done everything you can to ignore them and shut them down. If there is any hope for the future in this country, Small business needs a chance to take back Main St. from the Fascist whores on Wall St. and start rebuilding this country again. The new mindset on this Labor Day should be" too small to fail" and with this attitude and your support everything else will just happen. If you want to build bridges I suggest you start by rebuilding the bridges you burned with the small business owners in this country and tearing down the temporary suspension bridges you have built between the White House and Wall ST.

    "set your political affiliation aside"

switching one teleprompter for another will change nothing, if Obama stays or goes, if it's Perry or Romney who takes his place makes no difference, nothing will change. It's not just Obama that has to go, it's the entire DC culture that is corrupted, bought and paid for to it's very core and it can not be salvaged in it's current incarnation. Simply tossing Obama is the illusion of choice and achieves nothing.

Anyone who votes for either of the 2 main political parties is a large part of the problem. And sorry but Ron Paul doesn't cut it. - although i 100% agree on his end the wars and the Fed Reserve - his other policies are simply another set of Empower the Oligarch's ideals - along with killing off granny if she's unlucky enough to not be in the top 2%.

Ron paul, in your opinion, is'nt the total answer.

    Okay.

Bur Dr. paul has been espousing exactly what more and more people want to hear for 30 yrs.

If he ends up being  the same as the rest the system has lost an important part of the perpetual fraud.

There would be no one for the malcontents, patriots,, rabble rousers, constitutionists.sound money, people to go to with hope of a positive change.

And then another layer of that stinkin' onion is peeled off.

No matter what he does, good or bad, could be the catylist for real change.

To suggest staying in the 2 party paridigm changes anything is ,well, naive at best.

Overall this is what should be roughly expected at his 'jobs' initiative coming up.

More payroll tax holiday (doesn't do squat for jobs)

A nationwide slave labor program modeled after the fascist Georgia Works (for free) program.  The one where you're given a 100 dollar a week stipend by the gov't and work for free.  About 12 weeks later give or take 4, the company either decides to hire you or doesn't.  (here's a hint, 19 percent are hired....if nationwide I expect that to drop in half).  So basically companies get free labor 'to help the bottom line' (because somehow that helps create jobs), the people that are already employed lose hours and money, people work for free, and are recycled through so they can continually get free labor.  Fascist, unamerican pro-corporate whore policy.

Claim that free trade packages with Colombia, South Korea, and another central American country will create jobs here, instead of suck more out of the country.  (for more bankster tax havens and screwing of china, and more manufacturing jobs lost to South Korea)

The 'best' part of his 'plan' is to rebuild roads and a few bridges that obviously need to be done, but because they have to be done, not because 'they create jobs'.  It's also not like these jobs weren't already going to be in the pike but funding issues were delaying them.  So it's really not an expansion, but pulling from the list of things that had been delayed...and that's job creation?  Especially since it's not part of a bigger strategy like a mag lev or nawapa program, but just fixing what we already had.  Repairing roads is about the lowest rung type of 'infrastructure' jobs.  How about stuff that will actually matter and produce cost savings, or an ability for other businesses to latch onto?  Nope none of those ideas are in his plans.  Just rudimentary shit.

...oh and the kicker?  Isn't he giving his speech in Detroit?

(is his teleprompter guy gone before or after..ha ha..might be a rough place to test out a new teleprompter speech writer)

This would be the time for Detroit's people to lambaste fascist NerObama.

While of course not certain, I'd say this would be a prime opportunity for 'Nero' to crack and present himself to the people that should rightfully heckle him.  (but then again who knows how much the crowd will be pre-screened)

    So again....

He's about to announce slave labor, job killing free trade, already in the pipe maintenance projects on mostly low cost roads, and more social security insolvency as a 'jobs' program....In Detroit!  What a fool.  Heckle the shit out of them Detroit.  (but I won't hold my breath)

Of course none of this will save our fucktard economic system based on monetarism.

We could truck radioactive waste all over the place, mess with it and truck it back to be stored under waterproof sheets 60 feet from your house...since Japan is our new economic role model:

    http://www3.nhk.or.jp/daily/english/05_20.html

Tochigi moving radioactive ash to 6 sewage plants

Tochigi Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, has begun moving radioactive sludge from a temporary storage site to several sewage plants, where it can only be kept for the time being.

Following the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, high levels of radioactive material were detected in sludge at waste water plants across eastern Japan.

Tochigi Prefecture had incinerated the sludge from its sewage plants at its waste water recycling plant, and melted the ash to reduce its volume. But the amount of ash has reached 1,000 tons, close to the storage capacity.

To deal with the problem, the prefecture decided last month to keep the radioactive waste at 6 of its waste water treatment plants.

On Monday, 50 tons of contaminated ash was being delivered by truck to a sewage plant in Kaminokawa Town. The ash contains around 30,000 becquerels of radioactive cesium per kilogram.

Tochigi Prefecture says the ash will pose no health hazards to residents or the environment, because it will be covered with water-proof sheets and stored at sites more than 20 meters from the nearest houses.

But the head of a local residents' group says that although they have agreed to the storage, they still have doubts about safety. He said he wants the authorities to be clear about how long they intend to keep the waste at the sewage plants.

Origins came from The Haymarket affair/incident: which turned into May Day, mostly recognized by most of the rest of the world.  The fascists/oligarchs, as is always the case, remade/rebranded things, turning what was originally a slaughter of workers into one in which workers are encouraged to go spend money on crap in order to keep their slave masters in control.

Maybe they can make the two lane road they made into a four lane road into a six lane highway with this deficit increase plan. I mean the two amusement parks both closed over five years ago so the need for the shovel ready plan in place since 1982 wasn't really there but it put some low bid union guys to work for over a year when the job should have taken a month.

For some reason it has taken six months to dig a ditch for a new sewer right down the street. Ahh The American Laziness and Crap Job Act. If we built things right in the first place they wouldn't need fixed again as soon as the job is over. hey just finished a section of highway last year and they are already ripping it up again because they screwed up the foundation.

I'm the corporate controller of aggregate mines and ready mix companies.

What we will see is work directed to established union companies with an established union work force to rebuild roads and bridges.  These companies will use the same employees that they already have, but will hire a series of temporary workers for short duration jobs that will be required to pay union dues for the work.

They will have no say in the union dues use, nor will there be any sort of refund after they are laid off within three or four months.  Those dues will help swell the union campaign chests without offsets for health and pension plans.

The AFL/CIO has called for war with republicans. In effect they have also called for war against non-union workers.

If you're non-union, it's seriously time to lock and load.  The intimidation tactics are going to become life-threatening and there will soon be little alternative for self defense, or retribution.

This may be the date that the second civil war will begin according to history.
