Only 54% Of Young Adults In America Have A Job

Tyler Durden's picture

A month ago, Zero Hedge readers were stunned to learn that unemployment among Europe's young adults has exploded as a result of the European financial crisis, and peaking anywhere between 46% in the case of Greece all they way to 51% for Spain. Which makes us wonder what the reaction will be to the discovery that when it comes to young adults (18-24) in the US, the employment rate is just barely above half, or 54%, which just happens to be the lowest in 64 years, and 7% worse than when Obama took office promising a whole lot of change 3 years ago.

And while technically this means 46% are unemployed, or the same percentage as in Greece, the US ratio, which comes from Pew, shows the ratio as a % of the total population: a very sensitive topic now that every month we see another 250,000 drop off mysteriously from the total labor force. However, unlike those on the trailing age end, young adults by definition are the labor force in their age group demographic, so it would be difficult to explain away this horrendous number by claiming that ever more 24 year olds are retiring. Although, yes, we agree that some may be dropping out of the labor force in order to go to college, incidentally the locus of the latest credit bubble, where they meet a fate worse even than secular unemployment: they become debt slaves of the Federal System, with non-dischargable debt at that, which even assuming they can get a job would take ages to pay back!

But wait: there's more - of all age groups, this is the one that has actually seen its wages drop the most under the Obama administration.

So not only are they unemployed, young adults are at least poor.

Net result: double the change, zero the hope.

That tomorrow
There'll be sun!

Just thinkin' about
Tomorrow
Clears away the cobwebs,

When I'm stuck a day
That's gray,
And lonely,
I just stick out my chin
And Grin,
And Say,

The reporters don’t give a shit about the 46% unemployment rate, all they are focused on is Obama’s re-election.

Would someone who knows these assholes please smack them up side the fucking head and knock some sense into their shit for brains.  Fucking retarded morons.

In parallel they are also busy selling a new war, 46% of young adults is a lot of cannon fodder to dispose the way those really making decisions see it.

Exactly. I never once saw a reporter interview a recent college grad and ask, "Have you looked for a job?"

Seems like they are just too good for "shit jobs," while they apply for the one they actually want. But then again, what some call "shit jobs" can pay a hell of a lot, but the stigma is just too hard for some to bear.

$200k and a BMW or bust!

There's that, and then there's the fact that employers don't really give a shit about your education either. They want experience. I worked at 7-Eleven for 3 years while I was in school. The retail experience has helped me so much more than my education has. Now I'm running a store and selling electronic cigarettes. Been in the business for a year and a half, and its not a bad business to be in. New industry, plenty of room for growth. It's cheaper than smoking and hell of lot healthier, so the bad economy is actually helping us. I put my time in and it's paid off. You gotta be willing to start at the bottom and work your way up. A lot of people aren't willing to do that and they blame everyone but themselves. Another thing people are not willing to do is adapt. I ride a motercycle and when it's raining, I take the bus. Gas prices don't bother me one bit.

Thu, 03/01/2012 - 11:54 | 2212746 tekhneek
tekhneek's picture

Gas is actually a lot more affordable when you're not paying $120/month for a fucking iPhone 5GSXULTRA10GINCREDIBLE. Get a simple phone with unlimited texting/calling...bata-bing: $80 freed up for gasoline that was "tied up" in that awesome phone. 22 extra gallons per month simply by shifting a little money from one pocket to the other.

Of course that works great unless you drive an Excursion and enjoy that incredible 7 mpg highway but let's be honest... driving an affordable and efficient car from your apartment to your city job isn't realistic. You need that 48" lift and those $7,000/piece tires just to make sure you're "safe" because everyone knows cars are just so small.

When Obama was running for president in 2008 many young idealistic college students volunteered for his campaign.  I asked a group of them if they realized U.S. corporations were outsourcing jobs they could do to workers overseas.  They knew about outsourcing of jobs and didn't have an answer for it but felt Obama was the only choice they had at that time.

Look at the bipartisan support that Greenspan and Bernanke have. Their monetary policy was never challenged by Democratic OR Republican administrations. "I don't understand why you have to put Obama in there implying he is responsible."

I would consider the remote possibility you are being snarky or sarcastic ... but the whole of your post speaks of a simple mindedness that is stunning in its magnitude.

Everyone is responsible for the choices they make. Obama, if he is just a stooge of "dark forces", has chosen to do their bidding.

In small words you might grasp,  'If you do evil, you are evil.'

This applies to someone like yourself that has to remember to breathe and apparently is unable to grasp the concepts of right & wrong; much less a higher order concept like reponsibility.

Please do the world a favor and discorporate at your earliest opportunity.

I was all over this about a month ago (brag, I  know). But now we have the confirmatory numbers for the US. No big surprise. Even though they haven't released numbers for the 25-30 year olds, I think we all can smell the sour milk in the fridge from out here.

Keep in mind the political trade-off, the choices that have been made: corporate welfare has never been bigger since 2008 when the entire FIRE sector was put on life support (and still is in an ongoing fashion). All of Fed monetary policy is aimed at keeping those failed companies alive (banks, WS, insurance companies and all that rely on easy ongoing credit to fund operations). And The money flows directly into the pockets of the top echelon so that their take home remains as high as possible.

Without allowing failure there will never be private sector job creation unless it is fully subsidized by the government. Same as a public works project, just pretending to be "private".

Let's see, Obama had the chance with bipartisan support and support from the top lobbyist in the healthcare industry to bring Peter Orzag's dream of national healthcare to all americans in a way that would cut costs enough to pay for all the new insured (based upon the 'Dartmouth Study'.  Obama fucked it up.  Let's see, Obama fired the CEO of GM on a Sunday without ever meeting him. Industry experts hailed his work (I'd have to go backand look up his name) as a leader in the manufacturing sector who did an outstanding job of moving a behemoth forward in spite of the unions and their attitude which prevented the evoution of GM at the same rate as their competitors.  That same Sunday he fired the CEO of GM Obama met with the '13 bankers', the CEO's of the biggest banks in our country.  Again with a bipartisan spirit to effect real and lasting reform to our financial system he had the opportunity to make demands and effect real change from these bankers.  What did he do?  He started the meeting by saying,"The only thing between you guys and the pitchforksis me."  And then he said,"I'm the only friend you have."  No investigations of Wall Street for the finacial crisis.  No arrests...no prosecutions.  WTF.  Do I need to tell you any more?  If so, let me know, my list goes on and on.  Barry is a Chicago politician at best and a disaster for our country at worst.  He needs to go.

Why does everyone pretend that the Government or the President or the Feds have anything to do with the employment?  People are unemployed because more and more jobs are being taken over by machines.  And it'll only get worse.   Relentless march of the machines.  Doesn't matter who's in the office.  Either we'll run out of oil and having not developed alternative energy source, will go back to 16th century.  Or a day will come when there will be only machines on this earth who worship man as their 'creator'...and go to war over man's identity.

Technological unemployment is indeed one of the pressures gaining force against the currrent, albeit fragile, structure of our society. My company laid off 40 out of 600 (15%) of it's workforce due to our newly streamlined business model. EVERYTHING is more efficient and requires less human touch. Our parent company will be instituting software that will probably (in my estimates) eliminate another 50% of our workforce within days of it going live. My uncle works for Donnelly Printing, at a plant that does nothing but annual reports. He claims that his plant will be shut down in just a year or two because of the reports going completely digital.

How can these examples not inflict damage on a capitalistic society? How will governments collect revenue, aside from monetization, with constantly dwindling numbers of people working? Will we all live on the dole? Nah, something's gonna break, and when it does, it will be chaos.

Where's the optimism folks? All the kids aged 25-30 that I come across have high hopes and aspirations. They dream of starting the next big social networking site, becoming a star on YouTube or creating an app (most are working on something to organize their digital music collections but a few are working on creating a game more addicting than Angry Birds) to help people spend more of their time doing nothing. The future is bright!

Irony.

Minimum wage laws are why the young have so few opportunities.  Who wants to / can afford to hire a kid with no experience for pushing $10 an hour (in San Francisco)?

Classic case of unintended consequences.  The liberal proclaim to be helping the poor by passing laws distorting the labor market, yet the poor are decidedly worse off for it.
