Open Thread: 2011 Closes....Down

Tyler Durden's picture

With the S&P 500 cash index closing 2011 down for the year (admittedly down 0.003181% is just 0.003181%, but it is also down), we look across asset classes and notable markets as we reflect on an increasingly intervention-driven and gap-heavy uber correlated global investing framework. UK Gilts, 10Y Treasuries, Gold, and Oil outperformed (rebased to USD terms) while Greek bonds, Copper, Emerging Market stocks, and Asia Ex-Japan stocks underperformed. The Dollar closed almost 1% higher on the year, the EUR down 2.6% versus the USD as the CRB Commodity Index closed -6.67% for the year. Japanese stocks and bonds had a tough year. US investment grade bonds outperformed high yield bonds. There is much to discuss and we open the thread for any and all discussions...

Global markets compared...(click to enlarge)...

An important grouping that many paid attention to is Gold vs TSYs vs Stocks...

Comparing Gold to other commodities...

Global Stock Indices...YTD performance...

While the S&P managed to close marginally down for the year, the sectors' performance was very diverse...

FX markets saw plenty of vol but ended with convergence as the all-powerful USD moved everything - except for the JPY which gained 8.1% YTD (and obviously swissy had the craziest of runs in the year)...

European AAA Sovereign spreads exploded and dispersed as clearly France and Austria are being priced 'differently'...

And evidently the desperate need for USD liquidity is highlighted best with the now ubiquitous EUR-USD basis swap spread...

Of course comparing VIX (actually the 3rd month VIX futures contract here) with implied correlation gives us a sense for the demand for macro protection versus micro protection...its clear that while VIX has dropped recently (as is its tendency at year-end) it is considerably elevated from a year ago and implied correlation is hugely higher signaling a demand for protection remains high as fear is still here.

but maybe security-of-the-year goes to...BTPs - certainly as much a pivot trade as any other in the latter half of the year...

But we end with the clear message that we discussed many times - the market is broken - it broke when S&P downgraded the USA and made the impossible possible...

The explosion of volatility in the financials post the USA downgrade, coupled with the markets absolute schizophrenia (risk-on / risk-off) are very clear when pictured above and below...

The S&P 500 traveled a marvelous 3240 total points close to close while amassing the 0.003181% loss it achieved on the year...

This is a result of cowardly investors with no sense of loyalty or patriotism. Shrewd value investors have put their lives on the line, only to be betrayed by doomer shorts, hawkish Federal Reserve officials and a pitiable fiscally impotent congress. I used to get angry at cowardly sellers, but now I just feel sorry for them. Equity sellers are in fact selling their country down the rat hole, just for a few extra bucks. And that’s just shameful and sad.

Looks like 2011 provided the perfect preview for the year to come. At every turn and in every dimension of our lives, we got a preview of the Shape of things to come.

It does not look pretty. but then again, perhaps pretty is over-rated?

What an opportunity to create change. Even the PTB know that from this mix and degree of instability, anything can happen. Anything.

Curious to see how things move from the net to the ground.

Awesome to be here, both with the TDs and the greatest bunch of intellectual keyboard-jockeys on the inter-webs!!! ;-)

See you all next year... we've got things to do. It's either that, or deep doo doo.

This is why I love the Ron Paul grassroots movement.

"RealClearPolitics.

NEWTON, Iowa -- As they waited for a bus dubbed the "Constitution Coach" to pick them up at the Des Moines airport and bring them to their makeshift lodgings late Tuesday, about two-dozen college-aged Ron Paul volunteers mingled in the cold night air.

The sudden appearance of a reporter's notebook and tape recorder drew comments befitting a group of young people who proudly wear their skepticism on their sleeves.

"What's the article you're going to be writing, man?"

"Yeah, what's the spin, bro?"

Asked where they had flown in from, the answers ranged from California to Virginia -- with one twenty-something purporting to have made the trip from Brazil to help Paul win the Iowa caucuses on Tuesday.

Unsure of what exactly they would be assigned to do, the eager foot soldiers who had signed up online and paid their own way here said they were prepared to phone-bank, knock on doors, speak at caucus precincts, or do basically anything that is asked of them.

When a volunteer noted that he was not authorized to speak to the media, one of his new friends quickly corrected him. "No, you can," he said. "You haven't signed anything yet."

Members of the group confirmed that they were told by the campaign they would have to sign agreements that would bar them from talking to reporters. A spokesperson for the Paul campaign did not respond to an inquiry about the restriction and declined to provide an estimate of how many out-of-state volunteers were expected in Iowa down the homestretch.

Throughout a 20-minute chat about their efforts, the volunteers frequently steered the conversation back to their level of dedication.

"What other candidate has this many people coming in from out of state?" one of them asked, noting that she had raised the money for her plane ticket to Des Moines.

No one could doubt their enthusiasm, but these young supporters nonetheless face a steep challenge in building a winning coalition of rank-and-file Iowa Republicans and nontraditional caucus-goers, while avoiding comments that might turn off either group.

Though several of them were eager to extol Paul's support for drug legalization and opposition to the CIA's targeted drone strikes in Pakistan, none mentioned the candidate's pro-life credentials that have been a focal point of his TV advertising campaign here.

Still, 25-year-old Brennan Westerson of Santa Rosa, Calif., said he was confident he could help persuade traditional Republican voters here -- many of whom are firmly within the senior citizen demographic -- to get behind Paul.

"They were college kids once," he said. "We're idealistic and we have a lot of passion, and maybe since they're older, they're wanting to revisit something like that."

Westerson said that he was first drawn to Paul because "he was a Republican who was talking about the wars, and that was cool to me."

Standing beside him, a young man who first declined to give his name but then identified himself as "James Smith" interjected frequently to opine on Paul's foreign policy views. In the process, he projected unabashed confidence about how he could make the case for the libertarian-leaning Texas congressman.

"We're going to be arguing the case of liberty," he said. "It's pretty easy just to talk about being left alone.""

I have a suggestion for the kids campaigning for Dr Paul when confronted with the question of the news letters;

They could hand the person a Super Brochure and say it's kind of like this. Ron Paul didn't write this brochure, his supporters did and paid for it. We hope there's no mistakes in it.

You know, what the Ron Paul grassroots movement is giving the country is a second chance to beat Obama. Cause that's who he would have been up against that last time the movement tried to get him to be the GOP Nominee.

Last time the movement chose to go in your face. They were on every street corner waving Ron Paul signs to go over the MSM's heads. They even bought the worlds largest political blimp listed in the Ginuss Book of World Records, ran it up and down the east coast at a cost of $400,000, just to get their candidate noticed. The MSM was too powerful back then in 08. This time they're playing it close to the vest, conserving their energy for the finals. I approve the tactic.

About the only thing different this time with the use of the world wide web physical links such as MeetUp, aren't quite as necessary as the last time. People make contact with the movement without having to be nudged with the social networks as much, although they're still very useful but not quite as necessary. I don't know how it works?

Heartwarming article.  Just don't bother with the video, archived by CNET from CBS news in which the verboten one's name is not mentioned once.  Strangely enough, I believe a Ron Paul victory will increase unemployment.  By the shrillness of the commentary, it sounds like half the MSM shills will be looking for jobs if Romney doesn't get the nomination. Someone needs to remind the sheep that the primaries are their last chance to be heard.  Once we have two PTB sell-outs running, the election, and all the MSM circus that goes with them, is irrelevant.

Interestingly enough, MDB's second best showing at -335 was on the Jon Stewart interview with Ron Paul and his post hasn't been deleted (yet) here....   http://www.zerohedge.com/news/jon-stewarts-extended-interview-ron-paul

I think you are a little confused about the term "investment". All of your emotionalism is out of place and self destructive. The powers-that-be do not share your patriotism. Buying paper of any kind does not equal patriotism. Value investors are not putting their lives on the line, only their capital. Capital does not equal life. You need some perspective, I think.

"Value investors are not putting their lives on the line, only their capital."

It's not just capital that is put on the line. Value investors work incredibly long hours identifying the smartest buy-and-hold equity opportunities and optimizing equity portfolios, and this can often mean putting your life on hold altogether. This is why it is nothing short of CRIMINAL for equity investors to bail out of stocks and leave the most courageous among us holding the bag. I'm sorry, but this is simply inexcusable and I will not apologize for my strong words.

I do apologize for any inconvenience, confusion, consternation or agita that I might have caused, but I'd replied to the Twit/Zero/Troll whatever.
Some folks think of him as humorous, but long ago in a thread far, far away, I got into some serious exchange wherein there was provided a rather delicate yet deeply telling examination and exploration of the man's/thing's character.... and came away with a distinct feeling that there's something terribly wrong.
Either he's paid to do this shit or mantally deficient.
In fact, thinking about it, I might be inadvetently taking advantage of a poor mental incontinent.
But then again, this is not a 12 step meeting, but it's next derivative, Fight Club.
Maybe best to let him expire on his own.
But such Bullshit is just beyond me.

Dawg!  What's happenin', my brother?
Being good as always, I can see.
OK, so I was a bit rough about the edges.  Crosion of my spitirual mantle taking place...  See, anonyomity can be destructive to the soul.  (OMG, I'm being my own victim LOL)
I'll add it to my 10th step tonight.
I need more of what you've got, apparrently.
Here's wishing you a marvelous New Year.
I'm all set with my extra large New and Imporved Xmas gift box of Polident, sugar free ice cream and decaf.  Probably still won't  make the ball drop, even on west coast time.
Always love the commentators announcing the New Year in NY as if it was "The New Year" when in fact it's somewhere near the asshole end of the day's activities.
The Ego that must be smashed :)

Hey, BTW, have had a series of surprising conversations over the last week or two with a very broad social/economic variety of folks.  All are starting to show some obvious signs of outright worry, concern, etc, but via the exceedingly subtle tone of voice/micro expressions that we've learnt to read as part of our development.  And the crowning phrase has been "Nowhere left to hide."
Methinks it be telling.
Deflation and hunkering down seem to be the zetgeist in my portfolios again this year.  The munis, long treasuries and TIPS did well, gold fine, silver not so fine and got creamed by the SNB on the Swissy.
But WTF.  Live and let live, acceptance and another day.
Bless you my man.

Don't discount the possiblity that stocks could go to all time highs in 2012!  Porter Stansberry says, and I am paraphrasing here, once the QEs kick in, there will be bubbles created "and" it could be stocks or gold or whatever.  All those digits have to land somewhere in the short run before the "great reckoning".  Stansberry thinks that a eurphoria may develope over at least part of 2012 before reality slaps us all right in the kisser.  Stay nimble.  Stay quck, and if you see a tryrant hit him with a fucking stick!

I shut off adblock for awhile, just to see, and I got ads for gold & silver bullion, Mercedes, time-share corporate jets, and survival gear.  Never looked at jets or cars, so I'll take that as an indication that Google thinks I'm on the right track.

Guess I'm elite, bitchez.  Nah- still a po' boy... but working on it and doing ok.  Here's to taking the counterparty on the apocalypse- hopefully by next year this time, you're all reading articles about how I bought the ranch next to Kyle Bass and have 2 million dollars in nickels.  It will be a rousing story of sucess and hope, if it happens- but as long as I'm not making coffee on the firepit in the backyard while fighting off marauders with the shotgun strapped to the other arm, I'll consider that a "win."

Good luck to all in the coming year- I can only hope its a repeat of Y2K.
