Two weeks ago we had a "bear market" open thread in which we lamented the arrival of the recession, or the resumption of the depression, depending on one's proclivity for dramatic flair. It took the rest of the world about two weeks to catch up to what our commentators already knew. Today, in turn, we want to celebrate a peaceful, calm, (lack of) labor day holiday following which we are positive the markets will reopen calmly, in an orderly manner, with modest volume, declining 3M USD Libor, a collapse in the Libor OIS and with no invocation of Rule 48 whatsoever, by opening it up to our readers' very cool, calm, collected and politically correct stream of consciousness.

You are prezactly right. The word sunk him, even though the U.S. does not have the copyright on the word "dollar". It is a generic term -- but it appears in the official description of legal tender of the U.S. so the guy was sunk. APMEX sells their own silver "rounds" and we can look to the Feds going after other manufacturers soon since these are "implied dollars" or some such bullshit.

these aren't "coins" they are rounds of 1 troy oz silver. the US silver eagle is a coin from the US Mint w/ a "value" of: "one dollar"

the rounds are just bullion; they are not coins. the canadian 1 oz maple leaf is a coin, but not an american coin; ditto the phliharmonic. a round from a reputable mint is recognizable and less problem trading than a bar or a piece of "silver" that has "5 troy ounces" stamped into it. the mint stands behind the purity and weight, so that's way better than a bar, which even if you get from blythe and take home, if you want sell it back to her, no longer meets crimex standards and may hafta be assayed and re-authenticated. the chinese can copy anything, but why counterfeit their own coins when they can just do ours?

As a coin dealer and subscriber to Coin World since 1991, I have followed the ins and outs of the Chinese counterfeiting. It is getting very substantial, but this has not been the first time coins have been counterfeited on a large scale. The Chinese are better than those have been in the past, however, since they can produce excellent dies from actual coins. It's the matching of incorrect obverse and reverse dies that is making them obvious to experienced dealers and the grading services. But a lot of them will pass to casual coin shops, flea markets, and anyone who thinks they are getting away with robbery by buying low. The joke is on all of these greedy types. The fakes will be removed from the market but not before damage is done to the veracity of the junk coin as a form of trade. I think some of this may be behind the Feds not cracking down on the counterfeiters in a big way. Engendering distrust will slow down junk silver being used in day to day transactions.

If the War on Drugs didn’t directly precipitate the Welfare State and the destruction of the American black family, why did welfare aid to families spike in lockstep with our prison population right as that War started? Well, if you’re familiar American drug laws, it shouldn’t surprise you that some 90% of those arrested under the Rockefeller Drug Laws in the years after its passage were minorities.

Sure, correlation doesn’t prove causation – but when you stop a moment and consider that marriage requires an eligible male, it’s not that hard to figure out why the modern Welfare State emerged in tandem with our War on Drugs, as it’s a little bit difficult to marry someone behind bars:

A black male born in 1974 had a 13.4% chance of going to prison at some point in his life, while a white male had just a 2.2% chance. And it’s not like this trend got any better, by 1991 the odds a black male would spend time in prison had ballooned to 29%, while the odds a white male would end up in the clink had only increased to 4.4%

And it’s not at all difficult to see how the reduction in marriageable males affected the rate of black marriages in America. In the decade prior to the start of the War on Drugs, the first decade of the Public Welfare Amendments, the percentage of married African-American women roughly followed the national trend and declined proportionally by less than 6% – but then in the ’70s as the War on Drugs raged, that proportional decline tripled to nearly 18

It's those manditory jail time for possesion within 1000ft of a school/church/childcare facility that pretty much casts a net over entire cities. Even if white kids did 90% more drugs then blacks the jails would still be 90% black because the odds of you being within a couple of hundred yards of a church/school/nursery when you get caught is extremely low if your lucky enough to be chilling in the suburbs at the time, where as in the city you can't walk a city block or two without seeing a babtist church/temple etc.

It's been 3 straight years of survival as a business, and we have just picked up speed.

Hell, I just last week finally got to full re-deployment of my most faithful employees.

I've been working late every night to get organized for my boss taking the whole week off next week, and I'm here now to take 15 minutes and check the days headlines.

I think I'll just put the work off til Monday and go see my parents.

But yea, I enjoy spending time with my family. And it won't be just my parents......my 2 younger brothers, sister in law, niece, wife, and 10 month old daughter will be there as well. 2 of my cousins with their sig. others and children, and a good buddy w/ his daughter will probably be there by the time it's all said and done.

When you have land like my parents--148 acres, and the equivalent of a hotel for a house (and a 1400 sq. ft garage/apartment to boot), you can have a good party anytime you like with no disturbances.

I'll try one: Are Americans dying? I got to wondering based on the sheer numbers of unemployed and underemployed, along with everything else that is going wrong in the US (let alone the rest of the world as well), are people dying in higher numbers than say five years ago?

What I'm wondering about might be fairly subtle- a modest uptick by county or city. It struck me that people who a few years ago could have paid for healthcare are no longer in a position to keep up the fight.... Anyone thought about this?? Cui Bono

It's amazing how few people understand that the government is PRINTING money. Terms like quantitative easing are euphemisms that too many people just don't care to question. I've told people outside of finance that the government has printed over 2 trillion dollars and have been met with shrieks of horror. So few people pay attention to what is happening, but when you put it in simple, straight forward terms, they are agast.

That's when they see the "fisting" that is actually going on.

What's most frustrating to me is the amount of COINTELPRO operations in place today - just like in the 60's, the FBI and it's ilk are doing their best to make sure that protests don't take off, when in fact there is now far more reason to protest and revolt than there even was during the Vietnam war. I tried to join one protest movement recently (Bloombervillenow.org, when I was still in NYC), only to discover over time that it was basically fake (I give some details about it on my 'fakes' page).

I would love to be protesting right now, but they have done a great job of keeping all that bottled up. Well, it's not game over yet, and I think they may well find a surprise over the coming weeks - pressure is building and the truth is spreading... I don't think there is anything as important as actively spreading the truth, at this stage. There are still way too many people watching TV and reading their newspapers, but every day that goes by sees progress! It's a race against time though: can we get to criticality before their next big false flag or not...

Oh, and didn't the Fed print 16 trillion$ - more than the 14.6 Trillion$ federal debt that decades to accumulate - in little over a year and a half?
