Presenting Anonymous' "Survival Guide For Citizens In A Revolution"

Tyler Durden's picture

Following the fireworks from this weekend in which Anonymous hacked and exposed thousands of Stratfor clients and millions of confidential emails, it may be time to pay some more attention to the hacker collective, and specifically a document that was released a few weeks ago titled "Survival Guide for Citizens in a Revolution." As Anonymous itself says, "This is a snapshot of what Anonymous thinks will be useful for your survival in case of a violent revolution in your country. As most of Anonymous works, it will be constantly changed, reused, improved etc. So watch for newer releases." Because all it takes for complete chaos to erupt in addition to the unwind in the financial system, is for one or two major hacks at system critical institutions to precipitate all out social panic. And who knows - while the financial system will self destruct on is own, perhaps Anonymous itself will do this or that vis-a-vis the latter.

Once more your handle doesn't fit.

The Revolutionaries are most likely going to include many of us(Big Sis thinks you.I am already,so best get your shit together). Why would we need to  confiscate someone else's Gold, when we have our own.

Many people here, I would put it at around 60-70% are already geared up and on GO.

Just the pussies, left wingers and dumb asses will be the early victims.Any man not prepared to defend his AO and turf, and allow his lifeblood to be stolen without going out without a body count is deserving of whatever he gets.

But his family isn't.

You have a COMMAND to protect ,feed, house, and defend them.......................if you do not know how, daylights burning.

Lenin and Castro were not revolutionaries.  Lenin was a tool of the bankers and Castro was a tool of the Russians.  Revolutionaries do not impose statism.  Revolutionaries lead people to freedom and liberty.

The Moscow Rules

Developed by the CIA, the Moscow Rules are an ode to the dangerous locale that Moscow was during the Cold War.

Much like “Rules of Engagement” for spies, they still serve as prominent guidelines today, just as they did then.

The original Moscow Rules were said to have contained 40 different rules, and a debate still exists over whether they weren’t recorded, or still classified.

Here’s the abbreviated list still circulating around the internet…

* Edited to add the remaining rules *

  1. Assume nothing.
  2. Technology will always let you down.
  3. Murphy is right.
  4. Never go against your gut.
  5. Always listen to your gut; it is your operational antennae.
  6. Everyone is potentially under opposition control.
  7. Don’t look back; you are never completely alone. Use your gut.
  8. Go with the flow; use the terrain.
  9. Take the natural break of traffic.
  10. Maintain a natural pace.
  11. Establish a distinctive and dynamic profile and pattern.
  12. Stay consistent over time.
  13. Vary your pattern and stay within your profile.
  14. Be non threatening: keep them relaxed; mesmerize!
  15. Lull them into a sense of complacency.
  16. Know the opposition and their terrain intimately.
  17. Build in opportunity but use it sparingly.
  18. Don’t harass the opposition.
  19. Make sure they can anticipate your destination.
  20. Pick the time and place for action.
  21. Any operation can be aborted; if it feels wrong, then it is wrong.
  22. Keep your options open.
  23. If your gut says to act, overwhelm their senses.
  24. Use misdirection, illusion, and deception.
  25. Hide small operative motions in larger non threatening motions.
  26. Float like a butterfly; sting like bee.
  27. When free, In Obscura, immediately change direction and leave the area.
  28. Break your trail and blend into the local scene.
  29. Execute a surveillance detection run designed to draw them out over time.
  30. Once is an accident; twice is a coincidence; three times is an enemy action.
  31. Avoid static lookouts; stay away from chokepoints where they can reacquire you.
  32. Select a meeting site so you can overlook the scene.
  33. Keep any asset separated from you by time and distance until it is time.
  34. If the asset has surveillance, then the operation has gone bad.
  35. Only approach the site when you are sure it is clean.
  36. After the meeting or act is done, “close the loop” at a logical cover destination.
  37. Be aware of surveillance’s time tolerance so they aren’t forced to raise an alert.
  38. If an alert is issued, they must pay a price and so must you.
  39. Let them believe they lost you; act innocent.
  40. There is no limit to a human being’s ability to rationalize the truth.

Are you using The Moscow Rules in your daily life?

It seems cognitive dissonance is too powerful, keeping this story from getting legs.

"Finnish police say they opened all 69 units, are recording serial numbers and have been unable to find any documentation indicating the real ownership of the  seized cargo.

Detective Superintendent Timo Virtanen of the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation is in charge of the case.  He has stated:

“Actually, in our investigation at the moment, we have got the information that we found 69 Patriot missiles on the ship and around 160 tonnes of explosives.”
The explosives are identified as nitroguandine, a low sensitivity explosive with a very high detonation speed.   These explosives have several uses, among them launching shipboard or submarine launched missiles or in the development and testing of nuclear weapons design.

Finnish authorities indicate the explosives were packed in an “informal” and highly dangerous manner.

Finnish authorities indicate that the Thor Liberty’s captain and chief officer are under arrest on suspicion of arms trafficking.  Both are citizens of the Ukraine.

The government of China has denied all knowledge of the incident although the cargo was destined for their ports."

Yeah like putting the news in The Washington Post is really suppressing it and keeping it "hush hush".

As for the USAhitman idiot site that claims Israel is the only other country with Patriot missiles, well, I guess when it comes to Israel and Jews, it's OK to ignore the truth and lie but from the Washington Post, I guess they're lying when claiming these countries have Patrtiot Missiles cuz you know we have no interest in having Patriot missiles on the DMZ.

Manufactured by Raytheon and Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control in Florida, Patriot missiles have been in service in several countries, including Egypt, Germany, Greece, Israel, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan and South Korea.

The December 21 BBC article stated that the MS Thor Liberty sailed from Emdem Germany on 12/13/11 and set in at Kotka Finland on 12/15/11. It was to leave and head to South Korea on 12/16/11. At ~1350 miles from Emdem to Kotka the ship traveled about 675 mi/day. Travelling at that speed from Kotka and winding around into the Med and down through the Canal after 9200 miles it would have been at the Straights of Hormuz sometime 12/29-12/30/11. Right in the middle of a war game.

Thought I'd share a story that was told to me today:

A friend has been communicating with me today and I've asked permission to share the transmissions. I've left off all my correspondence and am only sharing what was sent to me.

I believe there are many such incidence happening nationwide and main stream media is not reporting any of it, therefore I am sharing this.

transmission #1
Went to work around 11 homeland showed up for suspicious package which they blew up at 4 pm. Anyone hear about it?

transmission #2
Im in atlanta

transmission #3
About 1120 building management got on speakers and said that they had found a suspicious package outside, and federal prtective service and homeland were there investigating it. They had the area outside the main building marked off and were loiking

transmission #4
I went upstairs and was looking down at them. Frankly from my vantage point they appeared to be clueless. ;)

transmission #5
They eventually stopped traffic on our building. Closed down mcdonalds and cleared off marta passengers.

transmission #6
About 420 I heard a boom and our mail lady said they had just detoinated something and she was out of there ;)

transmission #7
Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center, in Atlanta, GA :) - health and human services

transmission#8 – I asked if I could share the story as it was given to me.

sure thing - share whatever you want and if I steal your stuff - will that be okay? They truly looked like they were running with their heads cut off to me - from what I observed - we are in the former Rich's building - so there is two buildings - with a bridge - that connects the two and runs over the street- the found the "package" near our cafeteria windows - on the big building -on the first floor - and it was a loud boom Maryetta - I heard it on the fifth floor. None of the guards knew what happened and one inferred even if they did - they wouldn't tell us.

When I suggested all the posts be deleted in case the employer would terminate her employment the response was:

I want to know - I was even tweeting alex jones to see if he heard

Maybe.

Corporations and the government -- and certainly the DHS control grid -- rely on the Internet enough that I imagine they will keep it running. Your home DSL/cable would go dark, of course. You can blame that on the hacktivists if you want to but more likely DHS will have sent an email to your carrier with instructions to proceed with Directive Such-n-such pursuant to Executive Order whatever, and that will have been that.

The Interweb is for buying shit to support the glorious peoples' democracy for great justice. Or something. Otherwise it's gone.

He was mentioning the INTRAnet, not the INTERnet. An intranet is a closed - often (but not necessarily) local network. HF Radio basically IS an "intranet".

It's worth mentioning, that for anything that cannot be called "surfing", the WAN (internet) really isn't that important. For example, chances are that regarding communications and info, your collection of websites and services is rather small. In other words: You mainly do not really rely on the internet as a whole, but on the internet connecting you to the intranets that matter to you.

Another important aspect is, that even if you need internet access, you do not really need an internet connection. For example, if in your country the internet gets filtered, you can still circumvent the blocks, by connecting to an intranet, of which one of the members provides an "outproxy" to the internet - preferably from outside your country (the only problem with outproxies, is that they are an ideal target for surveilance, especially popular ones... so optimally, one would have someone whom one knows personally and trusts, providing an outproxy just for you).

Trying to Understand's picture

I have a dumb question if I may to any or all of you "connection" (internet) geniuses.  There is a g4 tower on my property, about 380' high.  If the shtf, wouldn't that be turned off, just like landline dsls?

But, if it isn't - is it possible to tap into it without an account with its' owner?  Is that what you are saying when you said: "Another important aspect is, that even if you need internet access, you do not really need an internet connection. For example, if in your country the internet gets filtered, you can still circumvent the blocks, by connecting to an intranet, of which one of the members provides an "outproxy" to the internet - preferably from outside your country (the only problem with outproxies, is that they are an ideal target for surveilance, especially popular ones... so optimally, one would have someone whom one knows personally and trusts, providing an outproxy just for you)."

As I'm not afraid of heights, putting my own antenna on top of it wouldn't bother me a bit - should the need arrise.

First, a few very generic things - i'll try to keep it understandable for "non-techies".

The "worldwide-network" that you for now seemingly "transparently" perceive, under the hood actually has a structure like this:

- At the bottom level, you have small networks, that only deal with a single vendor, community. It can be as small as a single server, or as large as the early "ICQ" (a few servers, connecting millions of users). Wikipedia basically also is such a "local area network".

- The next up level ironically is something you for now do not get to see: Imagine for example a network of cables connecting such "local networks" and websites. In techie-speak, this is the "national backbone"... it is like a series of lines, connecting local communities and servers... be that statewide or nationwide.

- The next layer up, is what you perceive as the internet.... inter-national connections, that let you apparently connect to "collections of communities and websites" that actually are far apart. Technically, this to a lower extend is done by satellites, and interestingly mainly is done by bigass lines across OCEANS, with plain old cables (yes, they have thousands of really big cables going through thousands of miles across the sea).

- There also is another thing, that isn't really bound to "locations". It is the thing that lets you type a website domain, and go there, no matter where on the planet it is. Technically, without this thing, every computer on the so called internet, is just identified with a number (the "IP-Address"). But typing numbers is rather unituitive to do. Plus, if a website moves it's server to some other location, you would have to learn an entirely different number. To solve this, there are so called "nameservers". A nameserver can be imagined like a phonebook, translating names to numbers. When a website moves to a different computer, it just updates it's entry in those phonebooks, so that people can continue to use the same name (domain), but use a different phonenumber (IP-address).

Interestingly, most of those "nameservers" are located in the united states. Thus, the united states, if it wanted to, could actually instantly cripple the internet so much, that for a while people could only access websites and services, by typing their "phonenumber" (IP-Address) instead of their name (domain). Notice however: TECHICALLY, this does not make connections to websites of servers impossible - it just makes it less comfortable.

Now, let's get at how countries like china restrict/filter/block internet access. They do it in two ways: 1. (most probably) blocking access to anyone who asks for a given name in the phonebook (domain). 2. (less often) blocking access for anyone trying to connect to a given phonenumber (IP-address).

However, there is something which that kind of blocking does not (and CANNOT) prevent: Obviously, they do not block ALL access to outside the country. So, you can still connect to SOME people outside your country. Now, what if you created a connection like this:

Unblocked computer outside your country -> theoretically blocked computer outside your country

This is called a "proxy". First you connect to someone you can connect to, outside your country. Then, that other person, acts like a middleman, connecting you to some other computer that your nation blocks.

Why can your nation not prevent that? Because their intervention is restricted only to the "lines" INSIDE your country! As soon as they let you connect to ANYONE outside your country, that other person can send you whatever data it wants... like data from some other website. Imagine it like a bunch of people communicating: Your country does not allow you to speak to certain people of other countries. However, it still lets you talk to SOME people of other countries, so those other people can tell you whatever they want - including the stuff you are not supposed to know.

The only problem with this scheme is: What if that "other person" is a gov employed infiltrator? For everything that 3rd party tells you, and everything you send to that 3rd party.... you assume that you can trust this 3rd party middleman. I.e. if you wanted to access an external bank account that was blocked by your country, you'd basically ask a middleman to do it for you. But since that middle man needs your passwords and stuff of your external bank account, so that he can do the transaction FOR YOU, he could just as well instead just move all your money in your external account, to his own account. To translate this to the internet - any passwords you need to access websites outside your country, you're basically giving that middleman, so that he in-place of you, does what you want to do. Plus, he of course see's everything you are doing on the net (revelation: If you do NOT use such a middleman, you are still using a middleman - your internet service provider. If you have a so called "direct" connection to the internet, it is just your ISP, that plays the role of this middleman. And yes, there is the same trust/security issue).

With that background info out of the way.... the reply to your post:

There is a g4 tower on my property, about 380' high.  If the shtf, wouldn't that be turned off, just like landline dsls?

What you're talking about, basically is an "entry-point".... anything/anyone you connect to, so that he (middleman) connects you to the so called internet.

Besides of trust/security issues (see above) it doesn't really matter which middleman you pick - anyone who HAS a connection to the inet, can route you through. For connection to the inet being totally impossible, the "gov" basically would need to disconnect EVERONE in the nation from the internet - because anyone still having an inet-connection, could "share" it with you.

Practically, what would be needed isn't total elimination of all "entry points", but instead disconnecting anyone not in the "elite club" from the internet. Technically doable, but commercially and practically unprobable. Much more probable would be, to go "guilt-by-association" on anyone using a "non-sanctioned" middleman. However, even this would require, that a nation totally isolates itself technically from the rest of the world. Chances are that what instead is done, is the china approach, and trying to crack done on people circumventing it. But the problem here is: What do you do, if you have no fucking clue what someone is doing? Because, encryption does just that! You don't know what someone is sending.... what do you do: Outlaw ANYTHING not understood by the gov? Problem with that is: Technically, there really isn't any distinction between a new technology (think skype) and encryption..... in both cases, you unless you understand it, do not know what it means. So, a "big wall" would not just exclude people using encryption, but actually ANYONE USING TECH THAT HAS NOT BEEN SANCTIONED BY THE TPTB.

Suffice to say, this amounts to totalitarian technological isolationism. Any country that does this, will exclude itself from current technological progress.

But, if it isn't - is it possible to tap into it without an account with its' owner?

The question is less "CAN" but more "SHOULD YOU". To put it really simple, let's look at WLANs. Even if someone uses a router, that is operating unencrypted, so that ANYONE can hook in, and "share" his internet connection....

...well, ignoring that this somebody is still inside your country, and thus prone to the same restrictions as you..... the question is...

...do you trust him?

Why? Well, because you are using him as a middleman. The connection path is this:

Your computer -> his computer -> his ISP -> internet

So, EVERYTHING you send and receives, goes through his computer. And unless your data isn't encrypted, he will be able to see EVERYTHING you send and receive. Why? Well, because you're using him like an intermediate middleman.... you give him stuff, with the order of giving that stuff to someone else (i.e. some website).

This is what i meant, when i wrote that "outproxies" are ideal for surveilance: When you use a middleman, you can use him to do stuff you are not allowed to do.... or do not want others to know (encryption up to the middleman)....

...however, for him to do what you want him to do, you still need to tell him what you want him to do. Thus, he will know everything you tell him to do.

Do you want to entrust this to "some stranger"? No? Well, that's why i wrote that the optimal setup may be, to pick someone whom you know personally and whom you trust, and then make that guy/girl do stuff in your name.

Actually, this whole "techie stuff"..... besides of a few things that practically rarely matters..... can be explained in non-technical ways - mainly because the models and concepts really aren't specific to technology.... but rather how people interact with each other and in which ways. Plus stuff like trust, and what transmission of information to someone else means.

That's why from a tactical POV, the decisions are affected by the same things as everywhere else - honesty, integrity, trust, ecnomomics, information transport, game theory, and so on.

Network tech from a tactical and stragetic POV does not work in any different way than any other social interaction. It's just technical terms and implementation-specifications that like to hide this universality from "non-techies".

(At this point, i could go into motivations of why this is "common understanding" is hidden from "users", but that would be enough content for an article. Short version: It's the same tactics as everywhere else: Making implementation-complexity hide the simple truths and rules, from the suckers, so that the same old bogstandard exploitation tactics can be used all over again).

Bottom line: If you understand fundamental economics, interactions, trust, info-transfer, etc.... you in the big-picture really already understand all fundamentals to IT-tech.... the only thing you're missing, is language and implementation details.

The document seems to have been written with a presumption that the reader lives in a country with an antiquated phone switching infrastructure - i.e. some banana republic with less sophisticated internet tubes (and a strictly urban environment).

If chaos comes, I wonder how many formerly "innocent" people will wind up obstructing my path as I move from point A to point B.  I am not changing my shoes to blend in, or altering my driving habits to protect protesters.

More significantly, how many of those who cheer on the chaos, will silently and dutifully accept the murder, rape, etc. of their innocent/99%/non-violent/whatever loved ones.  THERE ARE NO INNOCENTS IN HELL.  Preparation is prudent but nothing wholly prepares one for that journey, and few even realize what that desitnation is.

I'll forego the sales pitch and just say I prefer Icom.  But, regardless US residents should strongly consider a vacation to the beautiful Swiss Alps for all their radio shopping adventures, as the Swiss state doesn't block cellular and government frequencies on off-the-shelf units sold to private users (getting your free frequency radio booty back past the DHS thugs is your problem though).

ICom Radio's for VHF or UHF. Virtually unbreakable. I've really tried.

or a note book and running shoes, old school style.

Can't beat HF though, esp with data capable radios. Just attach a laptop and encrypt msg.

The right antenna and you can get England off a 100w set

Course there needs to be someone listening on the other end. Takes some skill so practice.

Free and cant be stopped easily.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOVE

1985 bombing

In 1981, MOVE relocated to a row house at 6221 Osage Avenue in the Cobbs Creek area of West Philadelphia. On May 13, 1985, responding to months of complaints by neighbors that MOVE members broadcast political messages by bullhorn at all hours and also about the health hazards posed by the piles of compost, as well as indictments of various MOVE members for various crimes, including parole violation, contempt of court, illegal possession of firearms, and making terrorist threats[8] the police department attempted to clear the building and arrest the indicted MOVE members, which lead to an armed standoff with police.[9] The police lobbed tear gas canisters at the building and the fire department battered the roof of the house with two water cannons. MOVE members fired on the police, and the police responded by returning fire.[citation needed] A police helicopter then dropped a four-pound bomb made of C-4 plastic explosive and Tovex, a dynamite substitute, onto the roof of the house.

The resulting explosion caused incendiary materials listed in the police indictment, and stored by MOVE in the house, to catch fire, thus causing the house to catch fire. The resulting fire ignited a massive blaze which eventually destroyed 65 houses.[2][10][11] Eleven people, including John Africa, five other adults and five children, died in the resulting fire.[12] The firefighters were stopped from putting out the fire based on allegations that firefighters were being shot at, a claim that was contested by the lone adult survivor Ramona Africa, who says that the firefighters had earlier battered the house with two deluge pumps when there was no fire.[10] Ramona Africa and one child, Birdie Africa, were the only survivors.

"Safety" in air quotes. They will want the Internet intact to use it for their own purposes (including making money off the chaos) but won't want anyone else doing that. The simplest ploy would be to release a computer virus of some kind. Might not even be a random one; could be one they can use to do their own surveillance on infected machines, or randomly filter sites, or censor incoming emails (yes and I could write that software myself). But a lot of people will just duck-n-cover and leave the Internet in fear, then turn back to the MSM propaganda machine for "information". Mission accomplished.

Who the virus doesn't scare off, will find themselves digitally harassed, and they'll feel it.

The false flag part 1 may have been WikiLeaks, with Julian Assange as the possible dupe of the CIA ...

The big Wikileaks files were much more embarrassing to other governments around the world, than to the USA, curiously enough. It seems the actual thousands of leaks were selected for that purpose ...

With the ultimate goal to get most governments of the world to look at internet censorship positively ... even as they start to figure out that Google and Wikipedia, are CIA companies ... and that every internet company like Facebook must comply with secret US court orders to disclose information to the CIA, without ever admitting they received the orders or that secret court proceedings took place. (US judges now 'erase' courthouse records as part of their unlimited powers for the US oligarchs.)

Further proving the set-up, the WikiLeaks 'revelations' were a big ballyhoo from the CIA's pet New York Times newspaper, and then in the UK the corrupt fake-leftist Guardian, the UK Guardian aka 'the left wing of MI6', i.e., British intelligence.

The whole internet control scheme was foreseen and set up in the 1990s, when the CIA helped start Google, and they helped set up that mafia pornographer and murderer Jimmy Wales as the front-man for the CIA's Wikipedia ... letting 90 per cent of Wikimedia appear 'neutral' so the other 10% can be targeted lies. The main task of Google for several years was to push Wikipedia rubbish to the top of search results, and overwhelm any real person trying to write about a topic.

It is indeed about time for the new stage of the internet control plan to be implemented.

I started doubting the sincerity of Julian Assange's Wikileaks after he was arrested in the UK and was supposed to release the Bank of America leaks. As we can all remember, nothing but a few not very incriminating e-mails were released. After that, we never heard another peep about Mr.Assange being public enemy number one from the establishment, not another word. They just seemed to miraculously forget all about him. And, let's face it, Mr.Assange, as a personality, was always a bit full of himself, a lover of his own celebrity, and not, the I'm going to go to Guantanamo for my beliefs type of guy. Maybe, he realised that Gemima Khang and Micheal Moore were not going to save his ass from the orange jump suit and the world would move on to the next reality show. Certainly, from the quality of the latest Wikileaks, I can't imagine that he didn't cooperate fully with every one of the State Department's wishes.

Most of them now use Motorola 800mhz digital systems that are encrypted. Even if you had a scanner that would allow you to listen to the (multiplexed) frequency’s used all you would hear is digital noise. Every radio they have has a card inside that allows them to change the encryption on each radio in just a few minutes. Even if you manage to decrypt the audio and or data and they find out someone has done it they change it on you very quickly. Radio Shack sold a Scanner that would work on the original encrypted system. Motorola let Radio Shack sell thousands of these scanners before they changed the encryption turning them into nearly worthless door stops. You could still use them for NOAA weather stations and that was just about all. Needless to say no one was going to spend the money to decrypt the new encryption or buy the new decryption software only to have Motorola change it causing the loss of money by everyone involved in that process.

thats' what Im saying if the movement gets serious they will acquire the encryption cards. you could also put lookouts around the places where the OWS movement is camped. but all protest movements which can't achieve their initial goals tend to radicalize, and that doesn't mean violence it just means more serious tools and strategies. and you know there are probably people inside the police department who will tip them off. this is all street theater, and its just act one.

It costs lots of money to decrypt the signal. Hundreds of thousands of dollars were spent by Radio Shack customers that purchased scanners that could pick up the signals and decrypt them. They lost the use of those scanners. Motorola figured in the cost to change the encryption so they lose nothing by changing it regularly. You also can't just change out a card located in each radio. It's a part of the radio and can't just be traded out. Motorola spent millions of dollars developing their system for this reason. You're Government no longer wants you listening to what it does to keep you in line.

The Political One Percent of the One Percent

Lee Drutman

Dec. 13, 2011, 11:49 a.m.

This piece was prepared in collaboration with Ethan Phelps-Goodman.

If you think wealth is concentrated in the United States, just wait till you look at the data on campaign spending.

In the 2010 election cycle, 26,783 individuals (or slightly less than one in ten thousand Americans) each contributed more than $10,000 to federal political campaigns. Combined, these donors spent $774 million. That's 24.3% of the total from individuals to politicians, parties, PACs, and independent expenditure groups. Together, they would fill only two-thirds of the 41,222 seats at Nationals Park the baseball field two miles from the U.S. Capitol. When it comes to politics, they are The One Percent of the One Percent.

A Sunlight Foundation examination of data from the Federal Election Commission and the Center for Responsive Politics reveals a growing dependence of candidates and political parties on the One Percent of the One Percent, resulting in a political system that could be disproportionately influenced by donors in a handful of wealthy enclaves. Our examination also shows that some of the heaviest hitters in the 2010 cycle were ideological givers, suggesting that the influence of the One Percent of the One Percent on federal elections may be one of the obstacles to compromise in Washington.

The One Percent of the One Percent are not average Americans. Overwhelmingly, they are corporate executives, investors, lobbyists, and lawyers. A good number appear to be highly ideological. They give to multiple candidates and to parties and independent issue groups. They tend to cluster in a limited number of metropolitan zip codes, especially in New York, Washington, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

In the 2010 election cycle, the average One Percent of One Percenter spent $28,913, more than the median individual income of $26,364

At the top of this elite group are individuals such as Bob Perry, CEO of Perry Homes, who gave $7.3 million to Karl Rove’s American Crossroads in 2010 and $4.4 million to Swift Vets and POWs for Truth in 2004, and Wayne Hughes, owner and chairman of Public Storage Inc., who gave $3.25 million to American Crossroads in 2010, and Fred Eshelman, CEO of Pharmaceutical Product Development who spent $3 million in 2010 on his own group, RightChange. Sunlight’s Ryan Sibley writes more about the top donors here.

Unlike the other 99.99% of Americans who do not make these contributions, these elite donors have unique access. In a world of increasingly expensive campaigns, The One Percent of the One Percent effectively play the role of political gatekeepers. Prospective candidates need to be able to tap into these networks if they want to be taken seriously. And party leaders on both sides are keenly aware that more than 80% of party committee money now comes from these elite donors.

Political scientists Wendy K. Tam Cho and James G. Gimpel have called these elite donor networks “campaign gold” after discovering just how much big contributors tend to flock together, making it easy for candidates to raise substantial sums of money at a single event.

We find that in the 2010 election cycle, 74 federally registered candidates relied on The One Percent of the One Percent for at least half of all of their itemized (over $200) contributions (of those running in that election, 25 won, and 15 lost – the other 34 were not up for election; mostly they were Senators preparing for a future campaign). Only in 2008 did more elected officials (109) rely on The One Percent of the One Percent for half of their itemized contributions. (Candidates and parties do not need to disclose to names of contributions under $200. In the 2010 election cycle, the average congressional campaign got 84% of its money from donations of $200 or more. See our methodology section for more details.)

Congressional candidates are also increasingly relying on contributions from people who do not live in their districts, according to research Professor Gimpel has conducted along with Frances Lee and Shanna Pearson-Merkowitz. In a paper entitled “The Check is in the Mail,” they find that candidates are increasingly calling on what the scholars call “political A.T.M.s” – the small number of zip codes that are home to the concentrated communities of high-spending donors.

In short, The One Percent of the One Percent are becoming more important to candidates. While technology may have expanded the possibilities of raising more money through small contributions over the Internet, The One Percent of the One Percent have remained just as important as ever. And with new campaign vehicles for unlimited funding, they are poised to play an even more important role.

What follows are more details about who The One Percent of the One Percent are, and their changing role in elections. (For more on how we define this population, please see our methodology section at the end.)

Depends on how well one is organized. Bringing a single or two guns, against a BAND of gunmen, sure is good food for western action heroes (apparently kinda popular around here), but you'll be dead in no time.

An entire armed city-block, working together against looters on the other hand.... that can work.

What i find kinda funny, is the bipolarity ..... ZHers apparently care shit about relationships... or at least, they in threads almost NEVER mention it .... its always food, guns, ammo, gold over and over, with relationships and organization almost never mentionec..... while that PDF on the other hand goes into it extensively.

So basically, the folks who wrote that PDF are too extroverted to defend their own group, and ZHers are too introverted to organize their own group.

Also worth mentioning: There's something which apparently no one of the "no guns?"-members here have read and understood....

...and that is the very first sentence in the PDF. It claims to be a general survival guide for ANY nation in which order breaks down.... it isn't an US-guide.

And as you may or may not know - in the majority of western nations, it is by now almost impossible to own a gun legally.

Yup and there is romantic nonsense you see about 'living off the land' in some remote rural place with just their family.  Reality is they wouldn't make it through a single winter with that mentality especially in a place it gets below freezing.

This is actually something people need to take into account.  It's not as if you'll skip through the woods picking berries and shooting squirrels ad nasuem, whether it's freezing or not there.  Crops would have to be stored in a way that ensure you'd make it through the non-growing season (fall, winter and early spring), so if you don't know how to can, a fat harvest doesn't do you a ton of good.

And "living off the land" is actually insanely difficult if you're not a seasoned veteran.  Most folks are in cities, and therefore have never hunted, never gardened, or anything else that would have them ready to scamper to the woods and live the gentle Ben life.  I'm an eagle scout who comes from a very country family, but even them I'm not truly prepared to go live the rural life if SHTF.  I hate to say it, but superior fire power is probably what keeps me fed when food starts to thin out.

So I would agree that the first winter would most certainly thin the herd.  My goal would be to get back to my parent's house, as we have a network of family nearby, all of whom are skilled hunters, garden, can those veggies, etc.  That and redneck ingenuity in general would be much more valuable when SHTF...

Funny how there is no mention of guns in the proactive positive sense.  But you have to have all your photo albums scanned and uploaded to imageshack.

Why is it the most basic tool of self defense is overlooked and they go to great extremes to talk about other things?

Fine.  But what is an effective non-violent response to a violent situation?

Begging?

I agree with alot of what was posted. Food, networking, etc.  But how the hell can you NOT speak of personal protection?  A cowbell?

Guns are not the answer, just another tool.  Situational awareness will limit the need for a violent response, but to avoid speaking of it due to some preconceived notion about guns is not helpful, and downright dangerous.

Turn around and RUN THE FUCK AWAY.  Much better to avoid confrontation at all.  I have done it myself.  Back down from a fight.  Doesn't make you a chicken shit, makes you smart enough to try to NOT get hurt.

Only when THAT is not possible do you go to violent defense.

And remember, if one has not been trained in the use of firearms, one is more likely to get shot than actually hit a target.  Get in enough firefights and I can guarantee that you will be shot eventually, probably sooner rather than later.

Agree 100%. Best way to not get killed is to not put yourself in that situation to begin with.

That is why I stressed situational awareness.  There ain't no way I am going to be in a crowd looking down to see if I see boots that may mean there are AP mixed in.

Yup.  The surest way to win a conflict is to avoid one in the first place and even during a general breakdown that would case an overwhelmingly majority of the time.

At best, you just need basic firearms which can be used to secure property & ward off burglars/thieves/scavengers.  The idea of citizens standing off any kind of sustained organized military presence today is patently absurd especially one that has an armored or air-backed presence.

That is one of the principles of battle in Islam. When outnumbered, retreat. Refroup. Attack. I read 'The Life and Times of The Prophet' to learn about Islam and it really does provide a good battle plan against a mauch larger and well-equiped force. And the Muslims did manage to conquer most of the world using that plan, so... plus, It was written by an Englishmen so its not religious, just historical, so I found it easier to read. But I like the earlier comment too about stregnth in numbers, its not just about survival of the fittest. I have to admit I really dont want to believe the worst but I just have this gut feeling that one day we'll look back on Pres. Obama and long the days of him and Pres. Bush.

I think the idea is to go into the chaos in a defensive posture first, in order to protect loved ones, seniors and vulnerable members of the community. In order to clear the decks, as it were.

Once things are secured a bit and you can clear your head -- anyone with kids will understand that one -- then you start to make your move.

There will be guns everywhere. And things not guns but just as lethal in close range. Just take what you need. Improvise. Smart people with a will and a bit of organizing can quickly find a way.

This is not a video game. The cops will threaten your family first, then take your gun, then shoot you in the head, then kill all your family. Major fail.

Defense first -- secure the perimeter and get non-combatants out of the way. With the field clear, you wage war like Thor. Watch them run away when you do. Major win.

My first thought was cultural bias... Urban American leftists and Europeans who fail to see the curious disconnect between their stated desire for a free society with accountable government and... that same government's monopoly on force.  Hmmm.

The above might simply result also from lack of familiarity.

It is interesting how many places this kind of thing has gone down where the citizens really have no protection.

To clarify, let's distinguish between protecting yourself from (1) one side or the other with whom you disagree, and (2) the small but significant percentage of criminals and opportunists.  Firearms are a much safer bet with #2.

But you cannot speak of survival without using all the tools at your disposal.

Just a little hint: firearms are practically illegal in europe. If anything, it would be smarter to TRAIN now, but GET a gun later..... else, you'll get jailed even BEFORE things break down.

Ya know, cultural bias..... it's not like US laws apply to every other nation. Actually, regarding guns, US laws are the exception, rather than the rule.

The bless is that by tradition and demographics, you have not been excluded from physically preparing for armed revolution. The curse is that all other policies have taken this into account already.

Nope, not meant as a retort. Actually honestly, i am not sure if i should envy you, or pity the situation someone like you is in. Kinda sounds like the frontier of western culture..... which also means: the most influential as well as the most bloody place to be when SHTF.
