President Obama: "If You've Got A Business - You Didn't Build That. Somebody Else Made That Happen"

Tyler Durden's picture

Presented without commentary (highlights ours)

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me -- because they want to give something back.  They know they didn’t -- look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own.  You didn’t get there on your own.  I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart.  There are a lot of smart people out there.  It must be because I worked harder than everybody else.  Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.  (Applause.)

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help.  There was a great teacher somewhere in your life.  Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.  Somebody invested in roads and bridges.  If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that.  Somebody else made that happen.  The Internet didn’t get invented on its own.  Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.  There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own.  I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service.  That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.

So we say to ourselves, ever since the founding of this country, you know what, there are some things we do better together.  That’s how we funded the GI Bill.  That’s how we created the middle class.  That’s how we built the Golden Gate Bridge or the Hoover Dam.  That’s how we invented the Internet.  That’s how we sent a man to the moon.  We rise or fall together as one nation and as one people, and that’s the reason I’m running for President -- because I still believe in that idea.  You’re not on your own, we’re in this together.  (Applause.)

"But if you say, you can still pass the violations over, then I ask, hath your house been burnt? Hath your property been destroyed before your face? Are your wife and children destitute of a bed to lie on, or bread to live on? Have you lost a parent or a child by their hands, and yourself the ruined and wretched survivor? If you have not, then you are not a judge of those who have. But if you have, and can still shake hands with the murderers, then you are unworthy of the name of husband, father, friend, or lover, and whatever may be your rank or title in life, you have the heart of a coward and the spirit of a sycophant." There's elements of truth in what Obama says but he twists them. Reasonable people understand that fair taxes are a necessary condition for a modern technological state. Roads, infrastructure, courts are all things that have been helped by government intervention.

The problem is that the US government has also become the primary conduit for robbing Peter to pay Paul (for Paul's votes) and down that road lies ruin.

Very few people will disagree that others have helped build businesses by creating the pre-conditions to try. But in the end, any individual business exists because some specific person or persons took a risk. And having taken that risk, they deserve to profit from that risk if they succeeded (and to go bankrupt if they failed). Success and failures are both natural parts of the capitalist system. The primary aim of government should be keeping the market clean, free, and free of fraud. Instead government now becomes a stick up artist and an accomplice in oligarhical fraud. And yet Obama tries to use elements of truth to hide his corporatist agenda. The irony is immense.

Indeed and obama and the other communists are destroying the goose that laid the golden egg namely the middle class

Middle Class--Not the Rich or the Poor--Pay Majority of Federal Taxes, Says CBO Data

foxmuldar's picture

Obama continues to talk about doing everything for the middle class. But what he really wants is the middle class to fail so more end up dependant on the Government. Anytime you raise taxes on anyone, it eventually trickles down to the middle class. their the ones who pay the bulk of the taxes along with the rich. 50% don't pay any income tax and those are the ones Obama is counting on for votes. Them plus the dead and Illegals.

lizzy36's picture

I don't agree with what Obama said but i do agree with the sentiment.

Nobody succeeds or fails as an individual. It is always a collective effort.

With each successive year US citizens are losing their social-economic mobility. Yet all buy into the myth that they to can be a millionaire. They buy into a society that is designed to reinforce that premise.

For the record, i am NOT pro Obama. I am not PRO either party or either candidate.

But i do think the notion of American Exceptionalism is racist, and false. The narrative is designed to reinforce a system that at best works for 20% of US citizens.

TN Jed's picture

Of course nobody succeeds on their own but nobody works for free either which is why people receive a paycheck.  I thought this debate was settled each morning when my employees show up for work.  This bullshit speech sounds like EBT ain't working as well as a paycheck.  Imagine that.

"So this is how liberty dies...with thunderous applause."

tmosley's picture

Such utter bullshit.  Business owners have to overcome the incompetence and laziness of others in order to get anything done.  Were that I, as a small business owner, COULD have done anything by myself, things would have been much easier. I don't give 1/1000000th of a shit what anyone else did to "help" me, because I FUCKING PAID THEM TO DO IT.  Did they pay me?  No.  They stole from me.

Obama: "Government built the roads."  Bullshit.  Government APPROPRIATED the roads (seizing land through eminent domain, and labor by appropriating the claims on labor that rightfully belonged to others).  Same with every other damn thing they ever "did".  If they just saw to the common DEFENSE and regulated trade BETWEEN the states, everything would have been furnished by the free market, with an additional scalar of money not lost to the salaries of government bureaucrats.

foxmuldar's picture

Stimulus one was to rebuild bridges and roads. Remember how Obama laughed when asked about those shovel ready jobs? Obama? "Guess those shovel ready jobs are not so ready afterall" hahaha! What an idiot we have for a president. All those idiots that voted for him in the first place, hopefully will realize their mistake but I doubt many will.

Oh and Obama shows his knowledge of creating jobs by telling states they no longer need to require those collecting welfare to look for work or maybe take some form of training to continue to collect an unemployment check. Obama realizes the more collecting a welfare check the more votes he will get.  Imagine paying states to advertise foodstamps.

So if you open your doors tomorrow and you have no power, water..... what are you gonna do?  Build a power plant?  Open a water works?  Nope....your business is done.  Because these "community provided services"  are gone.

tmosley's picture

*Implying that non-governmental companies can't produce and distribute power

*Implying that non-governmental companies can't gather and distribure water

*Implying you are an idiot.

Just because government provides the services that were previously provided by the free market does not mean that the free market can't provide those services again, once the government gets out of the way.  You are defending government granted monopolies because you can't imagine that there could be other sources for so-called utilities, and you further assume that if the government stepped out, that those services would simply disappear.

Now I am stating that you are an idiot, idiot.

TomGa's picture

"Build a power plant? Open a water works?"

Isn't that exactly what happened in Iraq when services were destroyed?!  We saw lots of entreprenuers setting up generators right and left and running power lines to fill in where government ceased to function.  Water came in on private carts. And obviously you've never been in Nepal where entreprenuers have set up private internet cafe's and battery recharging stations in the high Himalayas, operation of which requires the continuous transport of fuel which is  brought up in 5-Gal. containers on the back of yaks. No "community provided services" there either.

The "collectivist" claptrap and mentality is for whiners and losers who could hardly wipe their own rear ends if govenment wasn't around to help them.

blunderdog's picture

There was that, but actually, the US government also built a bunch of shit there, too.

Your tax money at work.

headless blogger's picture

Let's see your entire business plan for powering up and providing water to the community using private market only.It would be interesting to see how much you would need and how many workers.

I don't see where Iraq is a good example. The suffering there is incomprehensible to populations that have been comfortable their whole lives. And I can hardly believe that water coming "in on private carts" is going to be enough in a desert community, except for the "fittest" and we all know who they will be.

Since we the taxpayers paid 3/4 of a Trillion dollars on the US Embassy in Iraq, then we should have no problem financing their power and water until "private interests" can do the job for everyone; since we destroyed much of their infrastructure under false pretenses.

knightowl77's picture

Our electricity comes from a "co-op" owned entirely by the residents in my town....we citizens got together independent from the government or I should say in spite of the government...Our water comes from a well, our sewer is our own septic system....We built that by paying individual contractors to construct the various pieces....The only thing gov't did was TAX every transaction....If the gov't would leave me alone I would be even better off

Uncle Remus's picture

And if I don't pay my bill, pretty much the same thing happens. What a fucking clueless asshole.

poor fella's picture

Sounds like you need to move to CHINDIA where at least if these fucking fuck-hole 'workers' are going to outright steal from you, they'll only steal a dollar per hour.

Jeezus H fucking christ dude.. it's a wonder you get anyone working for you at all. I'm no 'O'-pologist. But your big problem is being a stupid lazy bitch that comes up with a business model in which you can't DO EVERYTHING. (<-- I don't entirely believe that, BUT, that's as idiotic as saying everyone is incompetent and lazy). Most business can be run with more equity in a partnership (even if a worker only has an extremely minimal stake).

My issue with this discussion is that the corporatocracy pays c-suite (themselves) as if THEY DO DO everything. If somebody is incompetent to a degree - YOU TRAIN THEM!Something corporations stopped doing decades ago. Small biz owners work their asses off and I'm not sure why everyone came out of the woodwork - hoping deep down they qualify for John Galt's Valley of 'We don't need anyone!'. It's a fucking fairy-tale people. Haven't you read enough of the SHTF books to realize 'community' is a WAY better option than the 'lone wolf'. An early grave awaits anyone trying to do it all.

I have a business and work within a large corporation so experience both sides. I don't STEAL from somebody because I choose to work there, they profit plenty off of my work ethic and knowledge. You act as if you NEVER worked for anyone during your upbringing - Mitt, is that YOU?!?! (I know, he may have had jobs before, I just don't care to research it, and it sounded funny). I give your comments 'ups' often but for some reason, this one REALLY pissed me off. My wife is now mad at me for being on the 'chatrooms' too long... sigh

In a speech propogating Big Government, it is intellectually dishonest to extend the assistance of family or local community, into the Big Grasping Hand of Government as a Producers catalyst.

Obama, as usual, is a great Orator, largely of lies.

I, too, support neither candidate.  We need a 3rd party.

TahoeBilly2012's picture

In code what he is saying is...."stop whining about the Government oppressing you and redistritbuting your weath...look where that has taken us so far" (moon landing, Ipad, Hollywood, etc.).

monad's picture

Look where that has taken us so far: WW1, WW2, 'Cold War', Korea, Vietnam, Nicaragua, Columbia, Panama, Iraq, Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, all intentionally destabilizing the extended family in favor of government authoritarianism that favors a separate, foreign party, that is not subject to the rule of law.

Walt D.'s picture

Food stamps Obama - keep this up and it will be Bread Lines Obama.

The goverenment can not give you anything - the government does not produce anything - it can only give you what it has taken away from smoebody else.

blunderdog's picture

This is one of those things that sounds so cool and I can't imagine how it's supposed to make sense.  The government is just another business.  It has certain self-defining characteristics which are very powerful (being able to change laws and seize land and shuffle the money supply), but IF there is such as thing as "producing" *anything*, I've yet to hear someone explain how the line is drawn at "government."

A guy growing potatoes in his back yard and selling them is only taking stuff that comes out of the ground and collecting money for it.  That's "producing" something, right?

What is it exactly that prevents a town mayor from doing the same thing and adding that money to the budget for a local public pool?  What if that were simply part of the job of being mayor?

Dr. Sandi's picture

My mayor wouldn't know how to plant potatoes. Pot, maybe.

The question of productivity in the situation above is whether the potatoes would be grown or not without mayoral oversight. My suspicion is yes, assuming somebody is hungry for potatoes.

blunderdog's picture

Nah, that's a completely different claim.  My point is that the initial claim just doesn't make sense.  There are other different claims that do make sense, and I guess if you want to talk about those, go on with your bad self.

Dr. Sandi's picture

Sorry, I missed the point the first time.

Hell yeah, give the money to the pool fund. We all love a good dip once in awhile.
