Ahead of a foreign ministers' meeting on Syria in Paris on Thursday, Sarkozy also said that he was convinced that China and Russia would drop their support for Damascus if the international community showed unity.

"Bashar al-Assad is lying ... He wants to wipe Homs off the map just like (former Libyan President Muammar) Gaddafi wanted to destroy Benghazi," Sarkozy said.

China says considering sending observers to monitor Syria ceasefire

“It’s important that Syria has become an item on NATO’s working calendar,” Davutoglu told a small number of reporters who traveled with him to Brussels. “This time last year we had been talking about Libya and now Syria is on our agenda.”

"We called this meeting to gather all those who cannot stand that a dictator is killing his people."

Syrian security forces have opened fire on anti-regime demonstrators surrounding the cars of a UN team meant to monitor a shaky ceasefire, sending the observers speeding off and protesters dashing for cover, according to activists and amateur videos.

It's heating up a lot...
