Ugly afternoon for all those mo-mo monkeys who thought it was safe to chase again as Starz ends contract renewal talks with dearly beloved Netflix. NFLX -10.5% after-hours.

Starz Entertainment Issues Statement on Status of Netflix Affiliation
                        Agreement Renewal Discussions

PR Newswire

ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Sept. 1, 2011

ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Sept. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Starz, LLC, President and
Chief Executive Officer, Chris Albrecht, issued the following statement today
regarding the status of affiliation agreement renewal discussions with
Netflix.

"Starz Entertainment has ended contract renewal negotiations with Netflix.
When the agreement expires on February 28, 2012, Starz will cease to
distribute its content on the Netflix streaming platform.  This decision is a
result of our strategy to protect the premium nature of our brand by
preserving the appropriate pricing and packaging of our exclusive and highly
valuable content.  With our current studio rights and growing original
programming presence, the network is in an excellent position to evaluate new
opportunities and expand its overall business."

Maybe in his heart of hearts, Tilson wil get some schadenfreude (as opposed to real returns) from this and we hope his investors see it that way too (or remind him to stick with his high conviction calls). Though at least he didn't add in size during the last quarter like Lone Pine Capital, Sands Capital Management, Winslow Capital, D.E. Shaw, and Tiger Global Management and a whole host of the finest minds in the 2/20 crowd.

At least netflix is a real company making money and has been around for years.  It's completely overvalued though but it's not "groupon" or "twitter" of "facebook" even.  NFLX is probaly going to go the way of Blockbuster eventually.

Yeah, they're going to become extinct. If they'd offer just released movies online instead of making you pay extra and get the damn DVD it wouldn't happen as fast as its going to.

Oh, and they're sloowwwwwww. My streaming would get interupted continually while I did not have one problem with streaming through Amazon.

Groupon has been dead for 4 months now - it won't even IPO.

Old news.

Zynga missing? Semi-new: if Google can't get their shit together on + (which they're slipping) and dunking the CEO looking for 70:1 into a bath of reality, they're also toast.

I mentioned all of this to someone a few months ago. Might even be a pro-zynga post by myself if you looked furthernough back.

You are undermining stupidity of investors, especially foreign. Russian mafia doesn't care about valuations, they just want to launder their riches from state assets into something remotely credible. Russians buying luxury goods and US real estates left and right when Japanese learned their lesson long time ago.

Perhaps Fed is working to screw these Russians too. As soon as US hands over inflated assets to foreigners (the last fool), they will tighten and buy them back 10 years later.

You'll want to back that statement up, kinda pronto - if there's one thing not going to take dubious slush money, its crappy western code.

Given that Russian investment in code has never been dumb, and I know of a few major E. European / Russian game devs now on steam. Some of the best code out there is Russian / Ex East Europe, dumbass1. Not to mention the other few houses cracking games left / right / centre [hello... Ubisoft.. LOL] and cracking everything from cards to silly government agencies. Shit, back in 1998 Russian markets were the place to get cracked games - before the entire intarweb torrent function.

So... kinda time to prove some expertise, or shut the fuck up. Or - list me a website of yours, I'm sure some "stupid Russians" will be more than happy to say hello.

Here's a thing: name me 10 Russian coders now working in the West. Try the google, you might get 50%. I'll take 33% as you being full of shit.

p.s.

If you really think that Russians aren't aware of Groupon/Zynga issues, then... hmm. Troll elsewhere. You might want to get an education on who cracks online games at some point as well. Derp. Here's a tip, you fucking chimp: China gold farms, Russia cheats2. Gold farming for online games [using prisoners, no less] was worth approx $132 million last year - so what's cheating worth?

  • 1. Witcher, for example - huge Polish talent there - or perhaps "The Void" or... I don't need to go on, since you're too fucking ignorant to be making money investing in these guys/gals, and I'm not - yay!
  • 2. You might want to look into a Russian oligarch spending $150,00 on EVE online gaining an Empire, for reference
Fri, 09/02/2011 - 16:40 | 1627825 AldousHuxley
AldousHuxley's picture

Why are you focusing your argument on russian coder quality because that's not the topic of my statement. I was referring to russian oligarchs. Here is a secret: russian billionares don't make money producing code. They make money off of state assets they magically took over (KGB style) when russia fell. Jews got there first of course, but putin kicked them out.

Make no mistake. Russia's wealth is natural gas.

You missed the snark of my post. I even gave it to you on a plate in the footnotes.

Tetris.

Sigh, ok, I'll unpack, since this might not be obvious - EvE online is the #1 Capitalist wet dream of an online game. It even recently had a trillion ISK [which is about.. hmm.. $40k real world value (and yes, it is redeemable)] ponzi scheme - http://www.evenews24.com/2011/08/12/one-of-the-biggest-scam-in-eve-histo.... EvE online is famous for the lengths that players will go to to game, cheat, lie, steal, kill, devastate and otherwise "win the game" - look through its history - the Goon Swarm even pre-mapped Anonymous tactics in the real world. Not even joking - and in the game, they took out (permanently wiped) the largest, most expensive ship in the game. [Nose wiggling yet?]

Now, add the dots:

EvE online hosts some of the largest scale reality based modelling of cut-throat Capitalism out there. It is a microcosm of the macrocosm - and it is studied for that very reason

Russian Oligarch (aluminium based) really did drop $150k into it just to make a virtual Empire - ISK [ingame currency] can be traded [market modeled] to FLEX which can be used to purchase online game time [subscription]

It is made by CCP (or Crowd Control Productions) who happen to be Icelandic. It is part funded by General Catalyst Partners, a hedge fund. Is your nose wiggling yet? It should be.

All of the interactions are done within the law of the game.

Can you engage with this now?

agreed. The whole "Watch Instantly" has some of the shittest most random movies. Not worth it. IMHO.

It is interesting to see the transition in digital media though, observing from the viewpoint of a college student on campus. It used to be considered a luxury to have cable TV in a dorm room or an apartment, Now it is absolutely mind-boggling how few people even consider having cable worthwhile with the alternatives like Netflix, iTunes and YouTube.

BB - Check out the documentary section, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Tons of good stuff for us like-minded folks on ZH. Collapse, Loose Change, Why We Fight, The Corporation, Food Inc, The Beautiful Truth, Crude Awakening, some Alex Jones movies, for starters.  I agree the feature film selection sucks. But some good TV series - I'm marathoning through Sons of Anarchy Seasons 1 and 2 right now, and the Thomas the Train selection for my 2 year old pays for itself.

SD-One, @ 17:25,

Couldn't agree more.

I do not see how Blockbuster has kept the rights to NEW releases 30 days in advance of anyone else.

Esp since their PPV is a rental per movie.

Sucks the big one......wouldn't rent off T.V. period, 2x's the normal rates, sometimes more.

Bottom line, Hollweird sucks, they have put out maybe 6 movies worth watching this entire year.

Space junk reaching "tipping point," report warns

The amount of debris orbiting the Earth has reached "a tipping point" for collisions, which would in turn generate more of the debris that threatens astronauts and satellites, according to a U.S. study released on Thursday.

Answer to my own question

The world's first space smashup occurred in 2009 when a working Iridium communications satellite and a non-operational Russian satellite collided 490 miles over Siberia, generating thousands of new pieces of orbital debris.

So obviously it takes a while but it is cumulative.

I think you make a good point.

Geosynchronous orbit is a very high altitude compared to what many may be familiar with for manned spaceflight and also many earth observation satelites.

Many earth observation satelites are in polar orbits while typical communication satelites are in the geo slots.

More troublesome in my mind is the higher altitude debris because it will not de-orbit. Stunts like the US military (in a tit-for-tat with China) destroying a "weather" satelite literally sprays debris everywhere and sometimes into higher orbits.

Usually the graveyard is beyond geo or into the atmosphere so it is just all the odd bits that fall off or left over launch debris.

I get in these discussions all the time at work.  People are always saying how they work out, blah blah blah, and they cannot lose weight.  Everyone is after the next exercise video to make them skinny.

Pretty simple equation, If calories in <calories out, you lose weight.  I have a copy of Dr. Furhman's Eat to Live at my desk to give to people.  I tell them they can lose as much weight as they want.  Everyone looks for the weird thyroid condition as to why they are fat.  They say "I eat healthy", etc.  I say keep a diary of everything you put in your mouth and don't lie then we can talk about healthy eating.

First line after "I eat healthy" is "Skinless chicken breast", which ain't healthy.  We delude ourselves in society into believing our lies (CD explains this in his writings), nothing will change until we stop lying.

A $10.00 'burrito' is typically a meal large enough for two people containing fresh vegetables, black beans, rice and real meat like chicken, steak, or fish.  That is not only a better value than feeding two people ANY 'value meals' it is also much more nutritious.  $10.00 'Burritos' are also often served at places that have much more going for them than a 'play ground' and a plastic clown or some psychotic looking 'king'.  There are at least 6 other comparisons that can be made but Im not going to waste any more time.  $10.00 Burrito and a real beer, vs McDonalds, Burger King, Wendys, Steak and Shake, Krystals, ChickFilla, Zaxbys, Subway, Firehouse, Quiznos, TacoHell, White Castle or Five guys?? Its the $10.00 burrito any time.

Moral of my story, we gave him the ability to have Netflix, but he pays for it and doesn't feel the increase justifies the means.

perhaps the sycophantic bulls will now start to listen to, and call the company on it's inconsistent, idiotic public commentary. Mr. Hastings suggests that he manages the business for net subscriber growth and is therefore not focused on churn. As a result, the company will stop reporting churn after its upcoming third quarter (conveniently just as churn is set to spike higher). But rather than nodding like a bobble-head, I would like to explore the absurdity of this comment. Netfilx is incurring costs of approximately $15 for every gross subscriber addition. So in Mr. Hastings comment we have embedded a purported indifference to a quarter during which the company would add one million gross subscribers at a cost of $15 million but only one net new subscriber and a quarter during which the company would add just one gross and one net customer at a cost of $15! The man is a disingenous hypster whose time has come.
