Romney Clarifies Statement On Poor People

Tyler Durden's picture

In the aftermath of yesterday's SNAFU in which the GOP presidential candidate made it clear just why "he is not concerned about poor people", Andy Borowitz has intercepted the follow up explanation of what Romney really wanted to say...

From the Borowitz Report

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney today released the following letter to the American people:

Dear American People:

Yesterday, comments I made about poor people made me look terrible. This always seems to happen when I say what I really believe.

The fact is, I do care about poor people. That’s because I’m poor myself, when you compare me to Mark Zuckerberg.

According to most projections, Facebook’s IPO should net Mr. Zuckerberg a personal fortune of $28 billion. I couldn’t make a pile of dough-re-mi like that even if I fired people twenty-four hours a day.

Now, let’s take a look at Mitt Romney’s net worth: a measly $200 million. Now do you see why I consider myself poor? Compared to Mark Zuckerberg, Mitt Romney is practically a crack whore.

Now, I’m not going to sit here and envy a rich person like Mark Zuckerberg. That’s exactly what President Obama wants poor people like me to do. Mark Zuckerberg made his money fair and square, by creating useful products like imaginary sheep and angry birds. Say what you will about Facebook, it has totally revolutionized the way we waste our lives.

The fact is, if you’re poor in America, you should do what Mark Zuckerberg did: create a social network. I’ve just started my own, called TwoFaceBook. With TwoFaceBook, your profile doesn’t stay the same for more than two seconds.

In closing, there’s one more reason I don’t worry about poor people. They have Groupons.

Vote for me,

Mitt Romney

h/t Mike Krieger

Fuckin' Romboid rocks, dude.  Poor people should be in the army, fighting other poor people, or else made into little blocks of soylent green to be fed to other poor people.  If they are poor, then they can't or don't work, right?  So what good are they?  They can't be debt slaves if they don't work.  They can only be consumption unit robots to consume goods made by debt slaves on treadmills.  But I guess that is a use, in the economy.  So Romboid should care about poor people.

I'm guessin' he really, really does.  He makes me so proud to be a republican.

Actually, the "poor" in America do pretty well. Don't know about other states, but here in the land of 'fruits and nuts' our "poor" get:

1) Cash Aid (formerly known as AFDC; TANF)

2) Free daycare for their kids while they're working on their GED or looking for work

3) Food Stamps

4) Medi-Cal (free medical care for themselves and their children)

5) Section 8 housing

6) WIC

7) SSI (for the "disabled." Includes those addicted to narcotics)

8) Social Security (for the retired)

9) Med-Care (again; for the retired)

10) Medicare prescription coverage (again; for the retired)

Pity should be reserved for the truly "poor" working stiff who doesn't qualify for the first 7 above, and actually pays for everyone else's.

We have the wealthiest "poor" in the world...

No, the real problem is that you think "the poor" somehow magically covers all the people on all the entitlement programs but doesn't include the "working stiff" who really deserves pity.

Plenty of "the poor" are working.  The poorest I've ever been was when I was working full-time at Starbucks.  Nice brief bout of homelessness, literally difficulty eating on a few occasions, etc.  I qualified for some of those great benefits you mentioned, but lemme tell you, I'd have done anything to get into a job that paid a living wage.

To anyone with a long list of all the "great" features of poverty in the USA, I say: try it yourself or shut the fuck up.

It's not what you think.  Not at all.

I think thats the point.

I would hazard a guess that most here at ZH started out "poor" and are now ok. We all...outside of the rich Hamy & MDB...lol...know what it is.

I did. It sucks.

The issue is why do they stay poor or do people move in and out of "poordom"? If its why do they stay poor, shouldn't we be asking ourselves other uncomfortable questions?

Is it individual fate?

Was it "easier" for one individual to "go down" and live comfortably while another said no efffing way I'm staying here and move back up? What were the life decisions they made? Did those decisions contribute to terminal "poorness"? Who's responsible for those decisions?

Its more complex when we bore down into the meat of it.

Is it humane to just give them "stuff" in order to keep them poor, out of sight and off the streets forever I guess is the question we really need to ask ourselves.

I don't think so.

You can change the subject, sure.  Personally, I'm for gutting absolutely everything and letting everyone fend for themselves, because it's the only way we're going to build a better society.

Anyone who says the poor have it *good* is a liar or a fool.

Which is Pool Shark?  Damned if I know.

I'm not trying to change the subject, I'm trying to expand it. Living where I do, I can share some examples...as I'm sure you can too if you're willing.

I know (personally) guys (and gals) who only work when they want too. To them, life is not a status thing or how much can I accumulate before I kick off to the next adventure of my being.

Its just about what they want to do with their time while alive. For the most part they don't suck on the system, they just enjoy life...sometimes I think more than I do...lol.

My point is, everyone is different in their goals in life and what makes them happy. And I don't have a problem with that at all.

Until, I'm forced to pay for the guy next door and the families WIC benefits as his only real goal in life, to me, seems to be screwin his ole lady blind, fishing and hunting ;-)

nmewn,

I doubt I'll convince you, but let me give you one thing to think about.  Let's assume that the reason you and I have what we have is that the vast majority of people have lower IQs and/or lower drives to succeed financially.  We succeed where they fail or don't even try.   Many others have great drive and/or IQ, but they are bogged down by drugs, lack of opportunity, or other circumstances.  There are a LOT more of them than us.   If we did not contribute a (very) small percentage of what we earn each year to keeping the rest of humanity comfortable, they would rise up.  The .01% lost sight of this over the last few decades.  Let's not the rest of us.

Those are your words sport, taken directly from above.

I chose to leave out the obvious love and appreciation you have of yourself and the projection of your character flaw onto me (as can be seen in your quote and my response to it) in order to concentrate on the issue at hand...which was your appeal to me involving extortion and theft.

To come back and claim I'm a narcissist, after I clearly rejected it and yours out of hand the first time, shows not only the fact you are one...but your claim to it is completely without merit.

Now run along and take your remedial course in Alinsky.

Define "good."

If "good" means having a roof over your head, food, medical coverage, and cash to buy clothing with a little left over for beer, cigarettes and cable TV; then yes; the American "poor" have it "good."

Though it is a lifestyle that few on this site would choose, millions of Americans do so for a combination of reasons. For many it beats working; lots of free time and nobody to answer to. As nmewn points out: many of us (myself included) have been "poor" at one time or another. There was a time when I skipped meals prior to paydays because the bank account was low, though (fortunately) I never considered seeking public assistance because I had to look at myself in the mirror every day. Like most others who have gone through tough times, I made a conscious decision to better myself and not slip into idleness and dependency.

Am I a liar or a fool?

How about neither.

I'm an individual who has spent many years working with the people on the above-listed programs. I have seen how those programs work, and how the people who use them run (mismanage?) their lives. I have seen that a great majority of them have made a conscious decision to stay right where they are. They may not be particularly well-off, but they are, by their own standards, "comfortable." They choose to use the social safety net as a hammock.

Yeah, the poor don't all have all that.  That's what I'm saying.

Some people have all that--and honestly, they don't qualify as "poor," despite whatever programs they may be exploiting.

Of course, there are big success stories no matter where you look.  Just like that Algers hero who started from nothing to build an empire.

They're just not representative.

What KIND of medical coverage? (hint: if you aren't under 18 or over 64 the answer is NO coverage)

What KIND of roof over your head? (hint: the kind that doesn't so much stop the bullets prevalent in most section 8 neighborhoods)

You're a fool. One who speaks loudly about things with which he quite obviously has ZERO personal experience, believes the mentally ill can make rational decisions, and that the few souls he has managed to encounter somehow represent a "majority" of the poor.

I've been poor too...if you, and nmewn, and myself, and...uh....where's your "majority" again?!

I don't think it is fate.  I am a small business owner in the process of trying to hire at least 4 new employees.  Hired 4 last Friday and only one showed up for work on Monday.  It seems to me, that their working the system is their job!  They collect their unemployment, get food stamps and whatever the f else, and are happy sitting on the friggin couch watching whatever it is they watch on the idiot box!

There appears to be no work ethic left in this country! Extremley frustrating!

You have no idea why the people are poor, you are just hi and mighty bullshit artists................ thinking you are so good until............. you get hit.

Sure their are people that abuse the system, there are people that abuse the system in every class we have in the USA. Probably the most righteous and full of bullshit is the fuking squidders. We could probably double the benefits to all the poor if we just cut off the subsidies to the squidders.

Then the "poor" could get a productive life.

Do not tell me they dont want it because that is bullshit.

You have never been poor if you believe that.

In this country as long as a person is trying to help themselves... we should help them.

Remember that ole' Bushes Texas rangers would have been a loosing business by 20m if it was not for specially prepared tax breaks. Instead he made like 80m on the deal.

+1 for that.  But nobody has hit the nail on the head yet.  Let me try.  Cultural optimism has been deliberately destroyed in this country.  There are no national goals today except winning the lottery.  Cultural pessimism rules our day.  Welfare and all of the safety net components were not created to help people.  They were created to substitute for a real economy.  They are intended to keep people from rioting as they demonstrated they could do when the leaders of optimism in this country were assassinated in the 60's such as JFK, RFK and MLK.  Who after 1968 led the charge for optimism?  Law and order Nixon?  Moral malaise Carter?  Ronnie ketchup is a vegetable Reagan?

Actually, Reagan provided the only glimmer of hope for this country with the SDI policy.  After living for thirty years thinking we could be vaporized by MAD, he said out loud and on national TV that nuclear weapons could be made impotent and obsolete.  The joy of removing the nuclear Sword of Damocles that threatened to wipe out everything we worked for in a bright mushroom cloud lasted about 15 minutes.  Then the MIC establishment news media mocked the taking of our fate into our own hands by calling it Star Wars.  Ever since then it has been downhill and we are back to being threatened with instant immolation by the Peace Prize President.  Howz that for aliteration!

Gingrich is an idiot, but calling for moon colonies only sounds crazy because of how nuts the world has become.  That was actually one of the enterprises from the 60's that drove people to become engineers and scientists.  That kind of project was the epitome of cultural optimism.  They weren't interested in how big their paycheck was going to be.  They wanted to participate in something that would raise humanity out of the mud and into the stars.  Instead, the Rappaport Report said that would create too many scientists and engineers, so we converted them into today's quants whose goal is to amass a bigger bankroll than the next guy.

There, I think I nailed it.

Like it or not, Romney had it right. "Poor" people are oftentimes "poor" because they want to be. They're also "poor" because democrats want them to be. Romney's focus on the middle, the people who I still believe want to contribute and work, is the right focus. The "poor" just want their "Obama" money, which was made clear in the 30 second soundbite after the last election.

Debate all you want about sheep, slaves, taxes, etc., but inherently people want to work, and obama isn't providing anything for it.

Welcome to the (Romney) Matrix

Mitt Romney’s individual contributors (please see end for list of financial institution contributors)

John Paulson, hedge fund manager, Bob Mercer, Renaissance Technologies, Bill Koch, member of Koch family, and various other hedge fund managers and private equity LBO firms, etc.

John Paulson was the hedge fund manager who made an estimated $5 billion one year betting on the economic meltdown thanks to a supertanker-sized amount of insider information.  (Remember that when Alan Greenspan left his position as chairman of the Federal Reserve, he went to work for Paulson at his hedge fund.)

To illustrate the direct wealth transfer in action:  Paulson buys a credit default swap (CDS) for $1.4 million, which later pays out $100 million --- and he does that any number of times.

Paulson and the other banksters and hedge fundsters, now have their billions and A.I.G. and Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley, et al., “must” be bailed out by the taxpayers --- who later lose their jobs and homes or residences, and must go on “austerity” programs because Paulson and Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase and GE bought those CDSes and AIG and the others who sold them didn’t have any capital on hand to back them up.

Bob Mercer’s Renaissance Technologies is an institutional investor in the major banks and oil companies which were heavily involved and responsible for the global meltdown as they speculated – or financially manipulated – the prices of oil, energy and commodities – jacking up the paper market price of oil to 13.8 times higher than the actual physical market by May of 2008 by super-selling oil futures to each other, forcing the price upwards.

They used the same scheme to jack up the prices of refinery-involved chemicals and oil transportation costs (using forward freight futures to raise the price of supertanker rental and bulk carriers, etc.)

Mitt Romney’s Fortune

Born into wealth, Romney would accumulate even more by selling debt, loading companies with debt and more debt by taking out loans against companies in leveraged buyout deals to reward himself.

He accumulated even more money by avoiding taxes; utilizing offshore finance centers in the Caymans, Switzerland, and other locations.  (The leveraged buyout structure itself is predicated on tax avoidance and shifting the burden of taxation onto the workers due to the tax deductibility of debt payments.)

This is what plutocracy looks like!

The purpose of the primaries and the general election is to STEAL OUR TIME.  It's to keep us locked into the oligarchy's game.  Nope, not going to validate this shit by voting on THEIR ballots that tell them we want to keep playing THEIR game.

There are only two outcomes:

1) Return to the US Constitution (in hopes that it can, in the face of resource collapse, keep us together);

2) Status quo runs us right over the cliff (drags the oligarchs to the guillotine).

Clearly the people don't care about the Constitution, so #2 is going to be the direction we go.

Thats is probably a fair description of the possible forks in the road.....

People are fucking clueless about the Constitution... it is truly sad...

The US will possibly  disintegrate into ~4 regions once the petrodollar collapses. I do not see a lot love between the regions going forward....

It will likely be the great leap backward to feudalism with lip service paid to the old constitution...

Suprisingly few oligarchs will have their heads roll... let's just say that they are a bit more mobile than in previous Revolutions....
