Romney Officially Loses Iowa, Gingrich Leading South Carolina 37% to Romney's 28%

Tyler Durden's picture

Something big must be happening behind the scenes because the level of broad popular distraction just hit ludicrous speed. The latest news, from AP: "Offering no explanation, the Iowa Republican Party has declared Rick Santorum as winner of the Iowa caucuses, days after saying incomplete vote results precluded it from doing just that. GOP State Chairman Matt Strawn and the party’s State Central Committee issued a statement late Friday naming the former Pennsylvania senator as the winner, “in order to clarify conflicting reports and to affirm the results” that were released Wednesday." Naturally, jokes about Paul votes being "hanging chad-ed" by Diebold machines are imminent: "Because eight precincts never turned in certified results, Strawn said in the statement Thursday that the party could not declare a winner. He congratulated both Santorum and Romney. Sixteen days earlier, Strawn had announced that Romney had won the caucuses by eight votes." But far more notable, from the PPP website: "Newt Gingrich heads into South Carolina election day as the clear front runner in the state: he's now polling at 37% to 28% for Mitt Romney, 16% for Rick Santorum, and 14% for Ron Paul. Gingrich's lead has actually increased in the wake of his ex-wife's controversial interview with ABC. Although one night poll results should always be interpreted with caution, he led the final night of the field period by a 40-26 margin. One thing that continues to work to his advantage are the debates.  60% of primary voters report having watched the one last night, and Gingrich has a 46-23 lead with those folks. The other reason his ex-wife's interview isn't causing him much trouble is that there's a lot of skepticism about it. Only 31% of voters say they think her accusations are true while 35% think they are false and 34% are unsure. 51% of voters say that they have 'no concerns' about what came out in the interview." In other words: three primaries are about to lead to three different winners. What can we say: America always gets the president it deserves.

More from PPP:

The skepticism of Republican voters toward the media is helping Gingrich as well.  Just 14% of likely voters have a generally favorable opinion of the media, while 77% view it negatively.  Gingrich's attacks on the media have clearly played well with the party base.

Gingrich is leading with pretty much every key segment of the Republican electorate. He's up 41-21 on Romney and Santorum with Evangelicals, he has a 52-18 advantage on Romney with Tea Partiers, he leads Santorum 44-21 with 'very conservative' voters with Romney at 20%, and he's up 39-26 with men.

In the final week of the campaign Gingrich rose from 24% to 37% in PPP's polling while Romney basically stayed in place, going from 29% to 28%. Romney saw a 15 point decline in his net favorability in the closing stretch from +24 (57/33) to just +9 (51/42). Gingrich saw a modest increase in his numbers over the final week from +14 (51/37) to +17 (54/37).

Usually when we poll in the closing days before an election and find someone ahead by 9 points we'll say with a pretty high degree of confidence that person's going to win. I'm not comfortable saying that about South Carolina.  A primary election with a lot of new news in the closing days for voters to absorb is fertile ground for a final result that's at odd with the polls.  Mark Blumenthal's piece today for Huffington Post about 'expecting the unexpected' tomorrow is well worth a read.  Gingrich will probably win tomorrow- but there's a higher than normal chance for a surprise given everything that's gone down in the last 48 hours.

Full PPP results here.

Yes, it matters a great deal. When the USD collapses after losing it's status as the Reserve Currency, America will go into one of two directions; A Totalitarian Socialism State or back to the Constitution Republic. The more people like Dr. Paul and others can remind Americans that all things good come from Freedom and Liberty, the better chance it will be the Republic.

The boat called America steers dangerously close to shallow waters. Only a capable captain can turn it from danger.

Except for Ron Paul, the other top tier GOP primary candidates now seem to fit Ambrose Bierce’s definition of “inverted” gentlemen :

Men “whose qualities, prepared for display like a box of berries in a market – the fine ones on top – have been opened on the wrong side.”

Can trees have names? If so then we can elect a tree.

Elect a tree. It turns bad Co2 into good O2. Whats not to like about a tree?

You dont have to worry about guns with a tree. Although saws, fire and weed killer my have a tough time lobbing for support.

ALL Congressional Republicans and their Presidential candidates should be out in Iowa and South Carolina looking for jobs. Take Faux Noise news cameras, the ACORN pimp, and film the process. Show American exactly where the Republican tax cuts have created jobs in the US.

If they can't, they need to be called liars, to their face.

I mean no offence to anyone, but if any of you truly believe that anything useful is going to come out of this farce then prepare for a rude awakening.

His negatives are so high, Obama will be licking his chops.  I think there are those that are informed, and those that think they are informed by watching and reading the mainstream press.  Paul does great with the informed, just look at about every internet poll.  Paul wins them all. It's the other group that is the problem.  You try to talk to them, but their minds are filled with propaganda. They simply can't recognize the truth because it means everything in their belief system is wrong.

Yes, in fact, all the thinking “Republicans” have now left the party and are Independents who can’t vote in closed primaries unless they re-register as Republicans, which is what I, but few others, do. Those remaining in the Republican Party, those who select the nation's opposition “choice” for President, are either Bush Republicans and/or Israel-first evangelicals who mainly are good hearted but politically naïve and have been herded into the party, church en masse, by activist ministers – many of whom are extreme leftists who have infiltrated the church for this purpose, i.e., wolves in shepherds' clothing. I have seen them in action.

A sad story.

I think VERY high.

Don't allow complacency to rule. We had that happen a few times in the UK and allowed the freekin BNP to have elected representatives.

Conversely, if everyone that actually wants RP in, votes for RP and gets some sheep to turn off Bone Idol for five minutes, you will get Ron Paul.

Just say they're offering free donuts if you vote for RP. At least you'll get the Police vote!

Current Biography Yearbook for 1989 gives this snapshot of Newt’s early career:

After graduating from Emory [University in Atlanta] in 1965, Gingrich received a master's degree from Tulane University in 1968. and a PhD. degree in modern European history in 1971. His behavior at Tulane appeared to belie his future conservatism and hawkish foreign policy views. He accepted student deferments rather than face the draft during the Vietnam War, experimented with marijuana, led a campus demonstration defending the school paper's right to print a nude photograph of a faculty member, and campaigned for Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller of NY in 1968 because of the governor's support of civil rights.

Americans are soooooooo lazy (mentally and physically).

Regarding Ron Paul; well of course he can't win.....but he is playing a critical role for opening up American's eyes.  I salute him for that in a big way.  I mean he could be retired somewhere drinking wine at 5:00 like most of our generation.  He's really a statesman versus a politician.  Not many (any) of those around.  Certainly, not the likes of the Newtster.  He ought to be disqualified just on his appearance and physical condition; pastie skin and fat ass!

GOD DAMN IT!!!

Im not saying Gingrich would make a bad president, just that he will never be president!!!

A vote for Gingrich is a vote for Obama!!! Gingrich can NEVER win a general election! This coming from a (fiscally) conservative Republican that was part of the Republican Revolution of 96!

I totally supported him back then. But he got his ass handed to him by Bill Clinton so badly, HOW CAN WE BE EVEN THINKING ABOUT THIS!!!

Talk about giving away the election! Gingrich will loose the woman and minority votes by 90 to 10. And he can not get any moderates or youth votes!

I am so certain of this I would rather vote for Paul or Santorum!

Paul could at least get the youth vote and the Perot vote!! Santorum at least has less baggage!!

Romney is the only candidate polling halfway decently vs Obama!!

Please (social) conservatives, DON'T DO THIS TO US!!!

We cannot survive 4 more years of Obama!

I'm not sure we aren't so far gone that ANYONE can help us, but 4 more years of Commrade O will finish off this great country once and for all!!!!!

You make no sense, my friend.  You seem to think there is a substantive difference between Obama and Romney.  Both men are much more moderate than their partisan supporters want them to be (and their opponents claim them to be), both support crony capitalism, and both support the military industrial complex and endless war.  Sure, with Obama you MAY get a 39.6% top bracket IF Dems also take the House and keep the Senate (very unlikely), but our runaway deficits mean you won't get any more tax cuts regardless of whether we have a Republican president.

So tell me, how does a 4.6% increase in the top bracket equate to "we cannot survive 4 more years of Obama"?  How stupid do you think ZH readers are?

As for me, I'll be voting for the man I believe is the most decent, thoughtful and principled candidate regardless of whether I think he can "beat" the "other guy".  That is Ron Paul, and my vote for him will at least have the effect of sending the message I want to send.  My vote for tweedle dee or tweedle dum sends a message I do not want to send, ie., that I will fall into line every time behind whichever candidate the oligarchs chose for each of the two corrupt parties.

If the sheep could step back from the "red team, blue team" game long enough they would see that they are being played like a fiddle. If the Republican party dies the Democratic party goes with it and vice versa. Newt drives the left nuts and in doing so they will rally around the party war drum en mass thus reinvigorating the left. The right loves it when Newt bitch slaps the MSM when the camera is rolling and they love the thought of Newt kicking our numbskull Presidents ass around the stage in a series of debates. So Newt is the perfect candidate for TPTB to run against their own guy. Re-energize both sides, begin a new red team/blue team Superbowl and by the looks of the comments the TPTB got many of you suiting up for game time, BITCHEZ!

Like a broken clock, Krugman is correct every so often. Here’s a strike on Gingrich:

“Gingrich is the stupid man’s idea of what a smart person sounds like.”

Says Business Insider: George Will summed up Newt as "the classic rental politician."

Gingrich is an amazingly efficient candidacy in that it embodies almost everything disagreeable about modern Washington...People think his problem is his colorful personal life. He's going to hope people concentrate on that, rather than on, for example, ethanol. Al Gore has recanted ethanol, not -- Newt Gingrich has served the ethanol lobby. Industrial policy of the sort that got us Solyndra, he's all for it. Freddie Mac, he says, hired him as a historian. He's not a historian. Hire Sean Wilentz, hire Gordon Wood if you want a historian

You are exactly correct about the Natural Born Citizen status.  When this issue first came up, I spent days reading thru information related to the issue.  If anyone takes the time, it becomes very, very clear that the original intent on the "Natural Born" requirement, was to have a President who was born of two "American" born parents-  to avoid having any with British Allegiance.  The founders naturally made exceptions for the first Presidents becasue they COULDn't be born of two American parents-  and THIS reveals their intent.

Now, what most Americans believe, when they hear of this argument - without making any effort to understand it: they believe that the question is if Obama is a CITIZEN or not-   NOT a "Natural Born" citizen. These are two differnt issues:  HE IS a US Citizen; he is NOT a "Natural Born" one.  Obama's father was clearly a "British Subject".       I think any true Constitutional scholar would agree with this.  Obama himself surely understands he is not eligible to be President - if he doesn't, he is no scholar himself.

Secondly, Obama seems to have spent millions of dollars BLOCKING any access to his school records, and travel records.  Generally, someone who is int he spotlight spending this much effort to obfuscate, means he is hiding something.

Unfortunately, it simply doesn't matter at this point - there is simply no one left in our government or schools, who can bring this to a real court.     I would hope that, if any one has read this far - if this issue of "Natural Born" doesn't seem clear to you, spend some time researching the issue.    The usual argument against the Natural Born claim is that it is Racist in origin.   It isn't racist to simply want to know the truth - and it doesn't matter what race you are - if you are lying and covering up, you deserve to go down.

Anyone who is still looking for a leader to get us out of where we are, is naive. I mean it would be great, but it's just not reality.

With the Repugs putting up shit candidates like these ones (excepting RP), how embarrasing will it be not to be able to unseat the current occupant that is the custodian of a shitty ecomony, hasn't done shit in 4 years, broken promises ("change"), etc.???? How will they explain that shit away? Normally, a shitty economy=getting your ass booted.  But that ain't gonna happen this time.

It hardly makes a difference to the majority of the population as to who wins the election. They all make rules for the benefit of and work for the real rulers of the world, the top 1% of the population.

And for a recent update on Romney's adventures in "capitalism":

http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2011/11/01/316040/romney-solamere-ponzi/

Mitt Romney, his son Tagg, and Romney’s chief fundraiser, Spencer Zwick, have extensive financial and political ties to three men who allegedly participated in an $8.5 billion Ponzi scheme. A few months after the Ponzi scheme collapsed, a firm financed by Mitt Romney and run by his son and chief fundraiser partnered with the three men and created a new “wealth management business” as a subsidiary.

In an exclusive interview with ThinkProgress, Tagg Romney confirmed their business relationship, but falsely claimed that the men were cleared of any wrongdoing associated with the Ponzi scheme. Tagg Romney told ThinkProgress that his three partners collected about $15,000 from their involvement in the Ponzi scheme. Court documents obtained by ThinkProgress show that the legal proceedings are ongoing and the men made over $1.6 million selling fraudulent CDs to investors.

The Ponzi Scheme

In 2009, prosecutors announced charges against the Stanford Financial Group, which managed a portfolio of $8.5 billion, for running a “massive, ongoing fraud” against its investors. The Ponzi scheme bust was one of the largest in recent history, second only to Bernie Madoff, who perpetrated a fraud estimated to be around $17 billion. The Stanford Ponzi scheme wiped out the savings of thousands, including many American retirees across the country. In Texas, 1290 people lost their retirement savings because of the Stanford Ponzi scheme; in Louisiana, several hundred reportedly suffered the same fate.

The Romney Business Connection

Launched in 2008 by Romney’s son Tagg and a few others, including Mitt Romney’s chief fundraiser Spencer Zwick, Solamere Capital is a “fund of funds,” meaning that it primarily invests in other investment companies, like private equity groups.

Mitt Romney himself made a $10 million initial seed investment in Solamere Capital and his personal financial disclosure forms reveal that he has received between $100,000 and $1 million in returns from his stake in Solamere. Romney has come under fire for refusing to release his tax returns, which would likely reveal additional details about his financial relationship with Solamere Capital.

I take some comfort in the fact that the algorithims being used to track my Internet browsing must not be very good, as Obama's sickeningly smug, sneering visage is peering out at me behind the words "TELL BARACK YOU'RE IN" ... wtf??? Also, #RAWNPAWL. For the record though, I have a certain inexplicable affection for Gingrinch, not because I feel that he's less of a sellout than the rest, he isn't, but because he once in a while has allowed an original though to enter in his head, and because he's neither a Mormofascist plutocrat nor Rick Santorum nor any of the other clowns. He's a clown, but he's the least clownish of the clown troop, except of course for the old dude that tells the truth, and if he doesn't run as a 3rd party candidate, I think I'll cry. But Gingrich over Obama or Romney, by a country mile. Unfortunately, that mile won't get us very far, we need Paul to take us a thousand or so the fuck away from where ever it is we've wound up now.

(and refreshing again, it's Obama again.)
