Ron Paul Takes Lead In Iowa

Tyler Durden's picture

When we learned on Saturday that the Des Moines Register, owned by Gannett - whose Chairman just happens to be a Private Equity firm head, and worked at Citigroup for most of her career, has endorsed Mitt Romney for president we said that this development "while likely set to provide a very short-term boost to Romney's chances, it is the baseless ongoing accusations against Ron Paul that will likely solidify the groundswell behind the Texan, with such desperate platitudes as "Ron Paul's libertarian ideology would lead to economic chaos and isolationism, neither of which this nation can afford." As it turns out, according to the latest Public Policy Polling data we can skip the kneejerk reaction and go straight to the after effect, because as of the latest polling, Ron Paul has finally taken the lead in Iowa. Granted this is just one of many polling organizations, and potentially it may be biased, but the bottom line is that often time reality (objective and subjective) is self-reinforcing. And when the US public realizes that the only candidate who deserves to be in the White House has a running chance, they will flock to him. Suddenly backing Ron Paul may just become the next cool thing. As for the Gingrich "honeymoon", it was over well before the nth divorce (pardon the pun). At this point we can only hope that the electoral game of reverse American Idol where the poll head is voted off in a week or so stops with Paul. However, with Perry, Bachmann, Romney and Gingrich already having been voted off, the only possible dark horse now remains Huntsman - does he have a running chance against Paul?

From the PPP:

Newt Gingrich's campaign is rapidly imploding, and Ron Paul has now taken the lead in Iowa.  He's at 23% to 20% for Mitt Romney, 14% for Gingrich, 10% each for Rick Santorum, Michele Bachmann, and Rick Perry, 4% for Jon Huntsman, and 2% for Gary Johnson.

Gingrich has now seen a big drop in his Iowa standing two weeks in a row.  His share of the vote has gone from 27% to 22% to 14%.  And there's been a large drop in his personal favorability numbers as well from +31 (62/31) to +12 (52/40) to now -1 (46/47). Negative ads over the last few weeks have really chipped away at Gingrich's image as being a strong conservative- now only 36% of voters believe that he has 'strong principles,' while 43% think he does not.

Paul's ascendancy is a sign that perhaps campaigns do matter at least a little, in a year where there has been a lot of discussion about whether they still do in Iowa.  22% of voters think he's run the best campaign in the state compared to only 8% for Gingrich and 5% for Romney. The only other candidate to hit double digits on that question is Bachmann at 19%. Paul also leads Romney 26-5 (with Gingrich at 13%) with the 22% of voters who say it's 'very important' that a candidate spends a lot of time in Iowa.  Finally Paul leads Romney 29-19 among the 26% of likely voters who have seen one of the candidates in person.

Paul's base of support continues to rely on some unusual groups for a Republican contest.  Among voters under 45 he's at 33% to 16% for Romney and 11% for Gingrich.  He's really going to need that younger than normal electorate because with seniors Romney's blowing him out 31-15 with Gingrich coming in 2nd at 18%. Paul is also cleaning up 35-14 with the 24% of voters who identify as either Democrats or independents. Romney is actually ahead 22-19 with GOP voters.  Young people and non-Republicans are an unusual coalition to hang your hat on in Iowa, and it will be interesting to see if Paul can actually pull it off.

BUT, if you were a Global Banker that wanted the status quo.  What would you do once RP took office?

I would wait a month and then sink the whole ship.  I am a huge RP fan, I just hope he has the gonads to wipe out the Central Banking cartel.

In order to do that, he will have to assert and expanded level of authority, which I am not convinced he will do.

Good, I'd like an actual election based on economics and reality. Not God and other crap. If the GOP actually nominated him, which still is a vast longshot, see God and other crap, we could actually talk about issues. The muppet circus that is going on now where pennies are discussed when hundreds are involved has to end.

The good news is that the Republic primaries are not winner take all, but rather cumulative.  This is exactly teh way Barry beat Hillary in 2008.  He came in 1st or 2nd and over time, he had more delegates.  It is not a winner take all set up any longer.  A better organized candidate has a true chance to beat the MSM designated 'front runner'.

Jeez I hope Paul continues this way and beats all of them up to and including Barry the Fake next November.

It's truly magnificent to behold. It must feel good to be Ron Paul and know that people are beginning to believe in you for YOU and your OWN actions, rather than the story you tell to people and hope they believe it because they don't know the facts (like the other politicians).

Every attack given to some other candidate has to be denied and redirected, but every attack people throw at Ron Paul he confirms and stands by, arguing why it is true.

That's a shockingly different approach and something that confounds most politicians.

I hope this sticks.

then you have these people.....

I know life-long liberals who are starting to line up behind Ron Paul as the true anti-war, pro-civil liberties candidate.

People are so fed up with the status quo and false alternatives, that they're finally starting to see the light.  Obama's presidency has been good for something, after all.

Mon, 12/19/2011 - 14:25 | 1994800 weinerdog43

Not a 'life long liberal' but I remember when the Republic party left me.  It started back shortly after Reagan was elected and promptly started going after the EPA.  I happen to like clean water, etc...  Then, progressively nuttier anti abortion positions.  Finally, the complete and utter BIG corporate knob gobbling to the detriment of real humans.  I just want the gov't to leave me alone, but Noooo!  We've got to have sooper Jeebus, big military, police state Amerika instead.  Well, eff that.

Barry had the opportunity at the beginning of his term to really shake things up.  Millions of people had written to their congresscritter demanding Congress not bailout the banks.  They did it anyway.  Barry could have said (and acted) like a new sheriff in town.  Instead, we got Shrub part 2.

I'm doubtful that even Mr. Paul can clean up these Auegan stables, but I'm willing to try.  So yes, I'm more than willing to give Mr. Paul a chance.  Good luck and godspeed sir.

Ron Paul wants Roe v. Wade abolished.

He is vehemently anti-chocie...under ANY cirsumstance.

It doesn't get much nuttier than that.

He wants smaller government.  Just small enough to get under your bedroom door.

I realize that.  Supposedly Barry is pro choice.  However, he is as spineless as they come.  I have zero confidence that Barry will in fact fight for abortion rights.  On the other hand, Paul at least has some convictions.  I'm willing to overlook this because by and large, he does not appear to be beholden to the banksters.  I think the bigger issue facing the country right now is 1.) Defeat the banksters; 2.) Beat back the military-industrial complex; and 3.) Stop the police state now.

What is so "nutty" about simply wanting to preserve the natural rights of a PERSON whose only "crime" is to be held captive for 9 months underneath another human being's skin?

So a very small and helpless human being that is only 10 centimeters away from the light of day is less worthy of basic rights to life, liberty, and happiness than you?

Then it would follow that we should be able to kill our children at any point up until they are no longer dependent upon someone for the provision of their needs and hence survival....what age would that be....2, 5, 17 months and 364 days?

Ron Paul, not only the presidential candidate that completely understands the monetary system, but the ONLY candidate that has a clue about economics, must take leadership of the US. If Ron Paul is not in charge when hyperinflation hits, the US will likely be swallowed by an entitlement minded society and fascist government policy looking to control resources and businesses in an effort to “do something.”

"Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free"  (St. John 8:32)

Ron Paul is not afraid to simply tell the truth.  That is what sets him apart from the rest of the field of candidates.

And that is why his ideas appeal to such a broad cross-section of voters.

He is not trying to appeal to woman, ethnic minorites, young or old, blue-collar or white-collar workers.

He appeals to that which responds to hearing the truth - even when it hurts.

Go Ron!

Gary Johnson! Come on.

He cut the 10% annual growth in the budget by using his gubernatorial veto on half of bills in the first six months.[4] His use of the veto over his two terms gained him the nickname "Governor Veto".

In his second term, he concentrated on the issue of school voucher reforms,[8] as well as campaigning for marijuana decriminalization. During his tenure as governor, he adhered strictly to an anti-tax, anti-bureaucracy program, and set state and national records for his use of veto powers

That's the thing about RP, he is real, he is genuine.  I'm sure they've already spent $millions looking for something in his past, some way that he is vulnerable.  I don't think they will find anything.

What is worrying is what they might do to him.  I have read over the years of superweapons that can induce cancer or heart problems at a distance.  In fact, were'nt such items on display at some congressional hearing in the last few years?  If RP can keep on keepin' on, the real danger is what they might do to him, or what they do in the world situation.  WW3 might be reason to cancel the elections, etc. etc.  But as more and more people wake up, all their usual tools of manipulation, like false flag, MSM, etc. are becoming less and less powerful.

Anyone can "win" one of these bumpkin state clown shows. ANYONE!

When the show starts after the cartoons are over you will see the real powers in all their glory from the war-monger/statist/new-con to the welfare/statist/democraps turn on the threat machines and the media whores that support each side to keep access to the debt/money/pig-machine will as usual keep the sheep in the proper pen.

Someone like RP will only have a chance after it blows to hell.

I took a lot of crap from friends because I didn't vote for McCain in the 2008 election. I'm still blamed for putting Obama in office. I always replied that if the GOP couldn't field a better candidate they deserved to lose. Also, because Bush was so bad, he was the real reason Obama won.

Iowa Caucus Polling System Threatened By Hackers

Republican Party officials in Iowa are taking new steps to secure their vote counting systems after an anonymous threat suggested computer hackers could attempt to disrupt next month's presidential nominating caucuses. A video uploaded to YouTube features a computer-generated voice denouncing a corrupt political system and calls on supporters to "peacefully shut down" the Jan. 3 caucuses.

Common people understand we already have economic chaos because of our politicians proclivity of running around the world butting into everyone's business. The 'Fix' is a return to minding our own business which out politicians call isolationism. Europe needs to provide and pay for their own defence. WWII ended in 1945, it's time wean them from America's tit so they can grow up. The Middle East has been the worlds boil since the 8th century. The solution to that problem is to allow them to return to their choice of population control by killing each other.

If any ZH readers/Paul supporters have friends or family in SC, start mentioning Ron Paul NOW (or sooner).  That will be the barricade state for the corrupt swine in charge.

On the plus side, Dr. Paul has plenty of cash and the truth going for him.  Did you know he has raised more money from active duty military servicemembers than all other Republican candidates combined?  Washington Post mentioned that last week.  Paul is pro-defense and pro-security.  The military itself understands this.

Ron Paul on Reproductive Rights

The sponsor of a bill to overturn Roe v. Wade, Ron Paul's libertarianism does not apply to women, though it does apply to zygotes. His is a no-exceptions anti-abortion position, essentially empowering a rapist to sire a child with a woman of his choosing. Although Paul attributes his stance on abortion to his background as an ob-gyn physician, it should be noted that most ob-gyns are pro-choice, and that Paul's draconian position tracks exactly with that of his Christian Reconstructionist friends.

While I recognize Ron Paul as a better candidate than all the rest, I still think he is not fit to govern. Not only for all the reasons of an unstable party backing (which may undo any president), but because his ultra-libertarian ideology would only entrench economic powers more and more. You see, financial innovation always thrives where it's less regulated... OTC bullshit anyone? Let Ron privatize and deregulate it all, and the consequences will end up being an even more bloated state now completely (even more than today) bought over by economic interests. A guy who can't recognize a legitimate role for the state, just can't do it. I'm sorry.

I think you misunderstand Ron Paul; he has always been against paper money, whether its paper or a computer entry, which he claims leads to tyranny. He supports an end to the unconstitutional powers of the Fed.  Says Paul, when money is replicated at will and without regard to cost, “it’s morally identical to the counterfeiter who illegally prints currency… it’s fraud.” Here is just one of thousands of public statements, this one in early 2008:

“First, money is not wealth, in and of itself. You cannot create more wealth simply by creating more money. Wall Street bankers cry out for more liquidity, but what is really needed is more value behind the dollar. But the value, unfortunately, isn't there.

“You see, the Fed creates new money and uses it to purchase securities from banks. Flush with funds, these banks seek to put this money to use. During the Fed's expansionary period, much of this money went to home loans. Through a combination of federal government inducements to lend to risky borrowers, and the Fed's supply of easy money, the housing bubble took shape. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were encouraged to purchase and securitize mortgages, while investors, buoyed by implicit government backing, rushed to provide funding. Money that could have been invested in more productive, less risky sectors of the economy was thereby malinvested in subprime mortgage loans.

“The implicit guarantee from the Fed [quickly became] explicit, as those institutions deemed "too big to fail" are bailed out at taxpayer expense. Wall Street made a killing during the housing bubble, reaping record profits. Now that the bubble has burst, these same firms are trying to dump their losses on the taxpayers. This approach requires more money creation, and therefore debasement of all dollars in circulation.

Centrally planned, government-manipulated economies always fail eventually. The collapse of communism and the failure of socialism should have made this apparent. Even the most educated, well-intentioned central planners cannot plan the market better than the market itself. Those that understand economics best, understand this reality.

“In free markets, both success and failure are options… As painful as it might be for Wall Street, banks, even big ones, must be allowed to fail..."

Ok, Ron Paul is against paper money. That's OK. But he's also against any backstop against economic interests taking over the political process. So even if you don't have paper money, even if you go back to a gold standard; you'll still be a serf for the economic interests.

And worst, returning to the old age of gold standard and a minimum monetary base, where the richest have the gold, and there's no gold for anybody else... I remember the fight to monetize silver... Like they're going to allow that once they control the money supply. Hah, you'd be screwed.

And historically speaking, the Mormon religion was biased towards blacks back in the day. Look up the history.

Mitt Romney's great-great grandfather was Parley Pratt - who only had ties to Joseph Smith. Who is Josepth Smith? Oh, he - J. Smith - only founded the Mormon church and those golden plates, visits from divine apparations, etc...lol.

Leaders are not elected - they are born.

Obama will get in for a second term though

BTW - the 44th president is not suppose to make it out of office. They are due for a sacrifice and who else than a guy from Illinois, who came in during a time of great unrest and is a lot different than anything else we've seen - thats right Ab Lincoln...i mean Obama...
