Ron Paul's Statement On The Budget Control Act And On "Super Congress"

Tyler Durden's picture

Not one but two letters today (link to prior here) from a very digusted Ron Paul, in which he once again dissects the complete farce that is the "spending" cut bill (if by spending one means slightly lowering the angle of attack on future government expenditures well over and above the revenue slope) and also adds his thoughts on the farce that is the "Super Congress."

Statement On The Budget Control Act

Rather than raising the debt limit, Congress should recognize the federal government has reached debt saturation and therefore stop incurring new debt!   Federal revenues for 2012 likely will amount to about $2.2 trillion, an amount roughly equal to the 2004 federal budget.  To balance the 2012 budget, Congress simply needs to adopt 2004 spending levels.  Was the federal government really too small just 8 years ago?

But Washington has a serious spending addiction-- and in spite of all the talk about spending cuts, there are none contained in today’s legislation.  According to the non-partisan CATO Institute, this bill merely commits Congress to spending less than it otherwise would.  Even if this Congress could bind a future congress, I doubt many Americans would define a cut as spending less on unconstitutional programs than Congress originally planned to spend.  The bill also assumes large tax increases in its revenue projections, with the expiration of the Bush tax cuts at the end of 2012 calculated into the “baseline” numbers.  This assumption will make it very difficult politically for Republicans to extend current tax rates beyond 2012.

Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of this deal is the “Super Congress” provision.  This is nothing more than a way to disenfranchise the majority of Congress by denying them the chance for meaningful participation in the crucial areas of entitlement and tax reform.  It cedes power to draft legislation to a special commission, hand-picked by the House and Senate leadership.  The legislation produced by this commission will be fast-tracked, and Members will not have the opportunity to offer amendments. Approval of the recommendations of the “Super Congress” is tied to yet another debt ceiling increase. This guarantees that Members will face tremendous pressure to vote for whatever comes out of this commission-- even if it includes tax increases.  This provision is an excellent way to keep spending decisions out of the reach of members who are not on board with the leadership's agenda.

The bond vigilantes will step in to stop this illusionist act, create a crisis that no shill Super Congress will possibly be able to trick anyone with, and the U.S. may be saved as the incumbent bums get thrown out next year for an army of Ron Pauls.

Or, 'The Housewives of Moscow" becomes the U.S. reality-escapism smash hit of the 2012-13 season.

Concentrate all power into a into a select small and elite group of politicians who are not accountable to the citizenry on a particular election cycle or are planning to make their career move to Goldman earlier than normal. This will help isolate the entire politburo from the people they pretend to represent and allow them almost zero accountability when things get extremely bad.  In the future you can expect to vote for your representative with the hope that one day he will gain enough tenure to become valuable enough for the syndicate to bribe him to be on their super committee composing the numerous new laws and rules you will live by as an American serf. This is democracy in it's finest hour and George Soros is swelling with pride right now.

Ron Paul is right. There were NO CUTS in this bill. they just reduced how much more they were going to allow themselves to increase spending. Every one who voted for this bill should be kicked out of office in 2012. Anyone who runs on the platform "I will never vote for a debt ceiling hike" will win, the poeple are sick of this Bs. Read any forum, lot of anger out there.

It doesnt matter though. Tax revenues will be so short of their projections that the ceiling will be in jeopardy by 4Q2012-1Q2013. And then, TSWHTF.

"if by spending one means slightly lowering the angle of attack on future government expenditures well over and above the revenue slope"...Wow, nice wording! You can also draw similarity of the economy with that of Wind Sheer. Everyone worries about economic headwinds, but its the tailwind (the Dollar climbs in value) that really kills-off any meaningful progress in exports, and sends the economy into the dirt. If you don't/can't lift interest rates and taxes (Lift), then an economic tailwind can be a killer.

Cut expenditures by 10% across the board now.  Raise revenues (taxes) by 10% now.

And my personal governance fantasy...

Anyone who wishes to run for government office is immediately ineligible for that position.  Make being a congressman like jury duty:  "Oh shit, honey, I have to be the senator from Iowa for two years."

I'm a banker.  A lady came in to talk to me today.  She has $10k in credit card debt.  Her solution was to borrow more money.  I said to  her, "Don't you understand that you can't fix debt with more debt?" She gave me a blank stare.  For the briefest of moments, I thought about stabbing her in the neck and taking her out of the gene pool.  We talked about budgets and getting out of debt and saving money.  She left massively dissatisfied, and will probably go to another bank down the street and get a loan.

As a nation we have 3 options.  Default, hyperinflation, or years of painful sacrifice to get our financial house in order.  I am willing to follow the third path, but none of our political leaders have the vision to lead us into sanity.  The most likely outcome is what ZH has become...a financial Mad Max with a lot of angry peeps looking to get over on those that have led us here.

Super Congress? Does this mean it will be even more dysfunctional than Congress Congress? Is that even possible?

Seems to me that when faced with a problem, Americans like forming committees or. "What should we do about the deficit? Let's form a commission" (Simpson-Bowles). A year later, "What should we do about the deficit? Let's form a Super Congress."

I can't wait for next year when Congress and the Super Congress roll out the Super Duper Congressional Commission on Deficit Reduction Committee Ad Hoc Working Group.

Where's the shadow government?
It's a bad, bad world

Sifting through the confetti,
I picked up my broken phone
Looked in the crack
Somebody waved back
Just sitting on their somebody throne

Up the library steps
Up the library steps (Here comes)
Up the library steps (the Humvee)

Crawling out of the flophouse,
I saw the mayor stealing my junk
I doth protest, citizen's arrest
Now my body's in his trunk

Time to stop buying treasuries and munis and other government debt.  They already take part of your income; don't voluntarily lend them more.  No more buying government debt directly, via ETFs, via mutual funds or via 401k.  Do your part to starve Leviathan - stop lending it money.

It's clear that smoke and mirrors prevail in Washington.  The only way I can see to get things back in control of the people, by the people, and for the people, is for all taxpayers to refuse to pay any future taxes until there is a balanced budget.  Given the recent plethora of doomsday predictions, this message could have a profound effect on the political shenanigans we have allowed to go on for so long.  If you don't pay taxes, it doesn't matter if you withhold or not. No tax payments - no vote on this one.

This could go viral but it needs an organizer.  How about you and Ron Paul, Tyler?

There was a very brief period in time; namely the early part of 2009 when I thought the republic could be saved. The herd was sufficiently riled. But of course I overestimated them. The well tested science of "airframe shock testing" was what I was observing. It was not a revolution of the sheeple masses, quite the opposite. It was part of a well designed action/reaction experiment.

The debt debate you just observed was another example of "airframe shock testing". You had Tea Party Boehner voting the same as Nancy Pelosi. Amazingly it held up quite well. You simply guage the publics reaction and re-calibrate the sytem accordingly  ...

"Airframe Shock Testing, The Economy, and Politics

An intelligent observer would notice the similarity to what an aircraft engineer does in engineering an airframe and what happens in economics and politics.
When a desired shape is found for an airframe, engineers build a scale test frame and subject it to enormous stresses using giant hydraulic machines that test the bending and breaking limits of the wings and fuselage. This is done to establish load limits, both predicted and absolute (breaks), and establish where certain equipment should go. Due to the nature of aluminum and composites, this is different for each and every airframe design, but absolutely necessary to predict the outcome of stresses.

SO, similarly, the way the economy works and predicting how it (any economy) will function under stress is done in a similar fashion. Simulations are run against real world situations to see how much stress the economy can take given a change in different variables. Much like how electronic circuits are tested as well, but that is another topic for later discussion.
For example, when the price of oil goes up, economists watch how the economy manages the stress and can make predictions of what it can take in the future in terms of increased prices.
The same goes for every commodity and anything traded on the market. When the predicted stress will be to high, the prices are adjusted to balance supply and demand, but this can only be done by stressing it...to test where the breaking point is and avoid it while maintaining balance.

The same thing applies absolutely to politics, and that is what you are witnessing now in the US elections. While you debate endlessly, there are those who control things that are watching what is happening.
The public is being shock tested to see what kind of stresses the society can endure under given projected circumstances.
The election of a woman VP is a test, as is the acceptance of a half-black man to run the country.
Whoever wins will change our country's history forever, and both will cause stresses on peoples ideals and thinking. This is normal and designed to see if the country will break, so to speak.
Without shock testing, accurate projections of what will happen in the future cannot be made, and how the sheep will behave cannot be predicted.
Since the sheeple often are often unpredictable and dangerous, their actions must be predicted to maintain public safety, absolutely." http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=368_1223970260

Now that the sheep have indicated a high docile factor under shock, expect much more to come. Grab as much PMs you can!

It is by voluntary action for Americans to actually pay federal taxes. You don't have to pay any taxes unless you choose to.  (if you choose not to pay federal taxes, then you don't have to pay state taxes either). If everyone voluntarily chose not to pay their taxes, I think it would be interesting to see what the non federal federal reserve would do then....
