Ronald Reagan's 1981 Christmas Address
Things sure have changed in the past 30 years...

Good evening.
At Christmas time, every home takes on a special beauty, a special warmth, and that's certainly true of the White House, where so many famous Americans have spent their Christmases over the years. This fine old home, the people's house, has seen so much, been so much a part of all our lives and history. It's been humbling and inspiring for Nancy and me to be spending our first Christmas in this place.
We've lived here as your tenants for almost a year now, and what a year it's been. As a people we've been through quite a lot -- moments of joy, of tragedy, and of real achievement -- moments that I believe have brought us all closer together. G. K. Chesterton once said that the world would never starve for wonders, but only for the want of wonder.
At this special time of year, we all renew our sense of wonder in recalling the story of the first Christmas in Bethlehem, nearly 2,000 year ago.
Some celebrate Christmas as the birthday of a great and good philosopher and teacher. Others of us believe in the divinity of the child born in Bethlehem, that he was and is the promised Prince of Peace. Yes, we've questioned why he who could perform miracles chose to come among us as a helpless babe, but maybe that was his first miracle, his first great lesson that we should learn to care for one another.
Tonight, in millions of American homes, the glow of the Christmas tree is a reflection of the love Jesus taught us. Like the shepherds and wise men of that first Christmas, we Americans have always tried to follow a higher light, a star, if you will. At lonely campfire vigils along the frontier, in the darkest days of the Great Depression, through war and peace, the twin beacons of faith and freedom have brightened the American sky. At times our footsteps may have faltered, but trusting in God's help, we've never lost our way.
Just across the way from the White House stand the two great emblems of the holiday season: a Menorah, symbolizing the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, and the National Christmas Tree, a beautiful towering blue spruce from Pennsylvania. Like the National Christmas Tree, our country is a living, growing thing planted in rich American soil. Only our devoted care can bring it to full flower. So, let this holiday season be for us a time of rededication.
Christmas means so much because of one special child. But Christmas also reminds us that all children are special, that they are gifts from God, gifts beyond price that mean more than any presents money can buy. In their love and laughter, in our hopes for their future lies the true meaning of Christmas.
So, in a spirit of gratitude for what we've been able to achieve together over the past year and looking forward to all that we hope to achieve together in the years ahead, Nancy and I want to wish you all the best of holiday seasons. As Charles Dickens, whom I quoted a few moments ago, said so well in ``A Christmas Carol,'' ``God bless us, every one.''

At the time this address was made this was an overwhelmingly Christian country but that is no longer true. The days of "God fearing" and allegiance to that God are gone, replaced by "State fearing" and real fear of that State and allegiance to it.. The "god is dead" argument has prevailed. You see, God absolutely had to go, along with his commandments of course. Especially his commandments. And especially the commandments dealing with lying, stealing and murdering, because those are the three pillars the modern State is built on. Its citizens have to be conditioned to accept those actions and to the degree they do accept lying, thieving and killing they renounce the commandments prohibiting them and empower those who want to possess that which belongs to others and are happy to lie and kill to further that end. How quaint and naive this speech must sound to anyone under the age of 40 living today. Reagan was speaking to the so called "greatest generation" when this speech was made, but they are gone now.
Some of us don't need invisible overlords that'll spank us if we misbehave to keep from killing people. Keep your backward superstitions to yourself.
This has always been a secular country no matter how hard psychotics like you try to rewrite history. If you want a national church go to England, there isn't one in America. Go practice voodoo somewhere I don't have to see it.

Freidman turned the centrally planned fascist economy of Chile around, and also put China on the path to a free market economy -- both at their repeated requests, which he felt he could not deny their peoples. Thanks to Friedman, a Chinese premier is now giving lectures to Obama on how the "invisible hand of the free market" works and Chile is so prosperous they have their own sovereign wealth fund. Obama's advisors: Stiglitz (at the IMF), Romer, and Summers are Keynesian socialists (by their own admission) and they're waterboarding our economy.

I was 7 in 1981, somewhere around that time I was watching the news with my mother & some story about the Soviets, I asked her why we were at war with them and she didn't tell me that the Communist government was oppressing the people and they couldn't vote for new leaders, she told me that the Russians were evil. I asked her 'all of them? There's millions of them, they can't all be bad people?' She said all of them were absolutely evil, every single person living in any Communist country was absolutely evil and wanted to kill me and every single American. I was fucking seven years old. And yes I figured out right then and there I was smarter than my Reagan loving parents, which doesn't say anything about me.

I lived in the Bay Area in 1985, and it was not that way there then. It was a pretty rough time for me and my siblings. It gave me a great start at being able to get by with not much though, which again comes in handy now.
Reagan sold arms to Iran to fund Nicaraguan Contras. Iran was holding U.S. hostages, the subject of an arms embargo and funding of the Contras by the government was prohibited by Congress. Reagan raised the national debt from $997 billion to $2.85 trillion moving the U.S. from the world's largest creditor to the largest debtor nation.
Reagan lowered taxes, government revenues doubled, the Democrats spent it all and more !
If government revenues increased so much under Reagan, why did the U.S. debt increase?
The Dems didn't want the tax cuts ! They thought they would lower revenue ! They agreed to spending limits ! When they saw the huge increase in revenue, they back tracked on spending limits and went crazy spending the money they thought wouldn't come in.....plus they used the new income to justify massive new borrowing ! For Reagan to get the money he wanted to stand up to the Soviets, he had to let them have theirs ! That's the way Keynesian fiat greases the rails of compromise....everyone gets all they want ! Makes cuttin' deals easier !

I noticed that whoever wrote Reagan's remarks omitted any reference to "Jesus Christ" who remains formally unmentioned. Here's a suggestion: Get a Strong's Concordance. Look up the words "brethren" and "brothers" in the New Testament. That will give you some context. Then re-read everything. Who're the brethren? Not the jews. Keep trying.

All you have said in your last comment is true, but the Jews did not kill Christ. If they had, He would have to have been stoned acc to the Mosaic Law. He was turned over to the Romans. They did not have actual authority to kill anyone as this was within the Roman Empire, jurisdiction of the Pontius. They only condemned Him, for which Christ laid on that generation of Jews only, the condemnation of Matthew 12:31 (the hinging point of the book of Matt) Bec they would not believe He was the Son of God, the judgement of 70 AD was set in stone.
