The Spanish Riotcam Has Arrived
Spain's honeymoon with its new government is over.
Following months of hope that Spain will somehow tiptoe around the sensitive topic of austerity, despite promises of such and slow leaking of bond yields wider, yesterday the government promised to generate savings of €27 billion of about $36 billion (Spanish GDP is less than one tenth of America's, so an equivalent US cut would be about $400 billion), as demanded by Europe, but which will leave a harsh aftertaste with the general population. As Reuters notes: "The central government could meet its target but there's still a risk from the regions and the social security budget," economist at Madrid-based think tank Funcas Angel Laborda said. "I get the impression the central government has created a budget it can meet but has left everyone else in a rather difficult situation." Well, technically no. After all what Spain is doing is following the Greek playbook page by page, as expected back in October 2011 - first Spain sabotages its economy, then it demands more money, then it promises austerity, then it never keeps its promises but in the meantime, Germans are on the hook for hundreds of billions in more bailout cash. At the end of the day (for the euro), it will be they who are in the worst position, but since they get to retain their export partners (whose current account deficits the Bundesbank funds), all is well. That is, at least, until this latest unsustainable bubble pops.
Furthermore, as noted yesterday, it will be Spain's regions that are about to become front and center for the bond vigilantes:
The regional authorities, which account for around half of the total spending budget and were responsible for a large part of the fiscal deviation last year, must slash their own deficits in half this year.
But, with few details on Friday of how the central government cuts will affect the regions - a full breakdown will be published on Tuesday - it is still unclear if Madrid's austerity comes at the cost of the 17 autonomous communities.
What is clear is the regions, which hold the purse strings of the much treasured state health and education systems, will be forced to make unpopular cuts which could fuel growing public anger like that seen during the general strike on Thursday.
Marches across the country saw violent flashes for the first time since the crisis began last week as frustration erupted at the government's failure to address the 23-percent unemployment rate which rises to almost 50 percent for under-25s.
...
The economy is expected to shrink by as much as 2.7 percent this year and could find little to spark growth if the government is forced to raise taxes to meet this years 5.3 percent deficit goal and the target of 3 percent in 2013.
Rajoy was wrong to push Brussels for a loosening of the original deficit goal of 4.4 percent of GDP for this year and should have asked instead for a two year extension of 2013 target, an editorial in the left-leaning El Pais wrote.
Recall:
Is Spanish Regional Debt Out Of Control?
Spanish regional debt currently stands at 13% of GDP and has surged from EUR60bn in 2006 to over EUR140bn currently. As Credit Suisse points out, the top four regions account for the majority of GDP, two-thirds of regional debt, and, with the exception of Madrid, substantially missed their deficit targets. What is more worrisome is the heavily front-loaded nature of the maturing debt with substantial refinancing needs in the next 2 years and this regional debt is split between bonds and loans - with many of the latter from Spanish banks - yet another illustration of the interconnected contagion that is building more rapidly. The growing crisis in refinancing (liquidity and costs) for regional debt developed the idea of Ponzibonos 'Hispabonos' - debt issued by regions but guaranteed by the central government. The conditionality of these guarantees with regard to deficit targets wil be critical but once they are issued, the risk is that the regions are unable to get their finances under control, the Spanish debtload increases, and there is no longer the flexibility for a regional debt restructuring, should one be necessary.
Spanish regional debt has grown dramatically in recent years...
But the refinancing needs are massively front-loaded (and rely not just on markets but the banks to roll loans also)...
As a reference, front-loaded means the can can not be kicked down the road. It has to be resolved soon.
So as Greece is supposedly fixed, at least until its 3rd bailout, which was hinted at yesterday by the PM, Spain has once again officially joined the fray.
In the meantime, the people are less than delighted with this latest episode of mean reversion, sometimes incorrectly called austerity, as can be seen on the following pictures from last week's General Strike across Spain, which morphed into a less than general riot. Since more tax hike are imminent, we will very likely soon have to find a local version of the Syntagma square riot cam, preferably one situated in the middle of Plaça Catalunya.

Death to Bankers who caused this mess!
the elites still walk away with everything.
You may be right, but what do the elites walk away with? Serious question, what are your immediate thoughts?
It's a process of elimination. They get rid of the "useless eaters", then they get rid of any threats to their power. Eventually the get rid of themselves and they all live happily ever after.
At this point: More claims, more pressure, actually possibly more real commodities and ownership of corps.
Problem is... while their "claims" certainly rise and consolidate.... i'm not so sure about practical FORCE. Yeah, sure, more equipment ever.... yet you need at least some people controlling them, and boots on the ground.... and at this point, i'm far from convinced that their "force-aparatus" (police, military) will stay content, unless they.... as usual.... invent some imaginary external enemy.
Problem is - the terrorism meme is getting repetetive and boring - it just doesn't cut it anymore for large-scale changes. You fill in the remaining blank.
Elites are nothing more than mortal humans that have accumulated wealth and power to control the masses. They bleed and can be killed like any other human. They die from old age. They die from diseases like cancer (Ken Fromm). They die from mass resignations of worldwide banksters. They are dying, and their control is about to end.
One of the Tyler's replied to a post a couple weeks ago that resigning banksters are filled with eager new banksters (sorry, that's not a direct quote... going from memory).
I'm sure the new banksters will try to make as much money as possible before the human army of disgruntled people turn on them and vapourize them from the planet.
Long rifles and shotguns, short pencil-neck coward banksters.
I like the spring fashion window display. Helmets and batons are gonna get trendy!
Me too. I think it's perfectly symbolic of exactly whose interests the police - the world over - are defending. "To protect and serve," sure, but they never specify who is being protected and served. This photo says it all.
Try calling the cops and tell them you "think" somebody is about to break into your home. See if they'll set up goon-line across your property to help protect your home based on your suspicion that something will happen.
Police are the private army of the elite. In almost 50 years of life I can't think of a single time when I needed the help of the police. But they sure do show up to write speeding tickets and other shit to rob me at the point of a gun. It's all "legal", of course.
it's right there in their titles: law enforcement.
you are correct to take note that "they" work for "them" - everyone should upgrade their mindset to allow that "national" security is at the expense of the individual, and "nations" are created and destroyed at will, their will.
to identify with your prison, or prison guard, not so bright, hm.
That was my favorite too...I know you not touchin my mannequin!!!

A little more oil on the fires, boys. We got to convince the world that we need bailing or this will spread to their homeland, too.

UPDATE[SNL]:
Are the riots centrally planned too?
As in too much? (or) I would like a beat-down to.
I remember all the ZH headlines about Greece.
For now, nothing but a YAWN. My bet is this is just Greece part II. Lots of pictures and headlines on ZH for a couple of years; then one big, huge, gigantic - NOTHING.
Then ZH can start all over again with Italy.
Same shit, different day. The central planners run it all. Nothing to do but BTFD.
April 3rd, unless another deadline is extended. Greek English Law, bond participation. THAT, is what really matters!
Not even BTFD. Rolling on. Move over. Oh, they're rioting there? Hmmmm, interesting. Looking at buying .......blah,blah, blah. Fucking gives me a headache. Good expression though. You're right mate. Heed .
"then one big, huge, gigantic - NOTHING."
Somtimes it seems like nothing can and will change. But mathematical laws and natural law are operating against the central planners. Whether deflationary collapse, followed by hyperinflation Weimar style, or some other specific combination of these forces, the point of collapse will be controlled by NO ONE. That is what we all prepare for.
Then there are the questions of the reset. Who will maintain power, who will step into the power vacuums? If we're ready, some among us may have the chance to lead and do things differently in the future.
All this talk about fighting back. I get the anger. But there's no way citizens win in a fight against the gov t. Absolutely no way. Ten thousand of you can line up with your ar14s and they'll drive right through you with one apc and a 50 c al. It's just not possible to win with conventional arms. Someone's going to have to get some tech that will work against the greater strength of the opposition. It's just completely ridiculous to think that a bunch of joes are going to get their guns and win the fight. Look at Syria for an example. Many of those guys had aks and the govt just stood out of range and blasted the crap out of their own people. Someone prove me wrong so there's still hope...
Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan.....
Seriously, the US military hasnt been able to win guerilla wars in those countries, doing it here against people with alot more firearm skill and much better weapons just isnt going to work.
All guns are not equal- and what is sitting in gun cabinets across this country is better then what most militaries have, not to mention what the Vietnamese, Iraqis, and Afghanis had.
The US might not have won these wars but think of the body counts on each side, I think Americans call that "winning".
The US casualties are probably outnumbered by child deaths alone.
"When your enemy is defeating himself, don't interfere".
Sun Tzu
@leadnass
How dare you defame the US military------------It is my native land------------love it leave it----------dooooood!
seeya on the turn, my friend om
I like what you're saying. But I don't think the situation is similar enough to warrant an accurate comparison. The three nations that you mentioned were all supplied with arms, training, food, etc. by outside nations. I don't see that happening here.
I like coming here and stumbling across someone who has his head screwed on right.
Whats an AR14? Is that the barrel of an M14 glued to an AR?
The way you win a fight against a superior force is to fight an asymetric war and get the people on your side. And just remember that If the soldiers turn sides it will be all too easy to win. It wont be a revolution, it'll be a coup de ta.
Exactly.
Sorry I had to junk you on that one. This is the defeatist attitude that is constantly propigated. Absolutely not true. Think asymmetrical warfare. Think supply lines. Think why Germany went around Switzerland and no, not because they were neutral or they had the banks there. Every household is armed w ARs, 1000 rounds of ammo and training
You would never fight one on one with a tank. But a trained squad could take out its supply chain in the field. Read Rawles book Patriots for some realistic possible scenarios.
Not if you were trained to fight as an insurgent.
The American people, once pissed off, are very very good at guerilla warfare.
Many of us spent our whole lives from kids hunting in the deep woods, silently.
Then we joined the military. Our Oath is still in effect.
Proceed at your own peril, mofos.
Nothing to see here, just another public rioting due to the slow dismantling of the illusory public aid to the least financially favoured social layers comprising the capitalistic pyramid, aka whatever social assistance in the form of public subsidization left, from the past few decades of socialistic remnants, integrated into the overly enlarged-due-to-cronyism governments of the western democracies, which are now seeing their accounts deleveraging due to the assumability of the banking industry's losses.
So Spain's financially deprived are now having their time of the day due to the deficit of social aid, along with record high unemployment, since whatever funds are being obtained by further massive indebtedness, will be promptly redistributed to its ridiculously underwater banking sector, mainly the overexposed to the domestic housing bubble banks.
And thusly we are now observing the latest domino of the circa 2008 crisis, presenting the same characteristics as the previous pieces such as Iceland, UK, Greece, US and Italy, with their austerity-induced riots and their attempts to an overall reset of their flawed systems.
I'm guessing Portugal will be next?
Would like to know the legal relationship between the regions, and the central government, as reference to our relationship between the states, and the Fed. I just assume at some point the Fed is going to buy up those chitty no-pay state bonds and bail them all out, without Congress or a poll or whatever. I think most blue states think the same way.
"Long" on riot batons, btw, apparently you can get any color you want, so long as they are black. "Long" tear gas too.
slewie = solidarity w/ theBasques, BiCheZ!
you wanna see some mofos fight for political indy against bankster-politico-fascism? huh?
stay freaking tooned!
The real game is in those Japan /kampo/BoJ/ yougoto/ ECT... Posts last week. I just need to digest them!
EXCELLENT WORK Tyler!
As we move into The New Feudalism, expect more riots, job actions, and demonstrations.
And more police training exercises:
http://www.citizen-times.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2012303290067
ASHEVILLE — Police activity in the area of Linamar Corp. on Hendersonville Road in South Asheville today is no cause for alarm – it’s all a training exercise. Asheville police and other agencies will be conducting the training much of the day, police say.
(That's the entire article, the link is just for reference.)
Stupid Euro-trash, "everyone" knows all you have to do is print more "money".
To view thses events with flippancy and dismissiveness suggests to me how insular the lives that we lead in this hemisphere have become. The only thing missing here is the arena. Oh,wait, we have flat screen tv. Just over the fireplace.
When the muzzles point this way, please, please, make it a head shot.
Somebody just opened an Oblivion gate.
I am sometimes astoudned that there are low paid police taking abuse protecting the shiny stores and banks.
Just wait until those shiny banks and stores are closed permanently and the low paid cops can't even use their credit cards to buy Starbucks between riot duty shifts. They'll be hiding in their basements wondering who knows that they were once a cop.
Remember the wisdom of old Boss Tweed: you can always pay half the poor to kill the other half.
With 23% unemployment I'm not at all surprised. I'd also wager a majority of those doing the rioting would don the riot gear and guard the mannequin in the window if you offered them the job.
I get Junked for a ; Rebuttal? The MSM Machine is in full ( scumbag) mode.

but don't wear one
the GM bondholders that got ripped off by the government shoulda rioted.
Once they get just a couple top bankers into custody the whole problem with banker occupation will go away.
I can't find it but I know I heard that during the 30s collapse the government or some group assassinated one of the CEOs of the top 4 banks in the US and after that things changed for the better over the next 80 years.
That is how the bankers have proven to react. So whenever the Europeans start gathering the bankers up that is when this insanity will most likely end.
Peace on earth and GIABO.

LOL at the guy in picture # 3.
He was just on his way to the dentist and walked into a frigging riot.
why are there only red balloons
Because they're communists?
You have two options in Euroland, communism or fascism. Well, there is a third option - you can be a moderate and support the existing communist/fascist State...wait, what? Hmmmm. ; )
Writing from Spain, I can assert with full confidence, that these are the same clowns-anarchist and commies-that attempt to torch our cities for sport! The vast silent majority of Spanairds and political leaders know reforms are necessay. And unlike Greece there exist a government with an ABSOLUTE MAJORITY to implement CHANGE! What the Socialist have destroyed, the Conservatives(Partido Popular) will fix,but it will take years!
our American cousins are not used to this kind of anarchic-communist excercises - they shit their pants when they see this kind of pictures...
so you thing the Populares will fix it? do you sense a popular and political will to do it? I'm so bad at reading the Spanish mood...
Your post smacks of sheer ignorance or at least lacked clarification that it should have been directed towards the liberal pacificists. America was founded by revolution, and 300 million plus firearms today make your statement baseless drivel. Ex. Rodney King riots, the ones whose shops or homes weren't torched had exercised their 2nd amendment rights to rooftop diplomacy (deterrence) using AR's. No sir Ghordius, you EU people use rocks and cocktails, we play for keeps.
hmm... don't see why your comment should be more clarifying.
my point is we have more violent-but-not-life-threatening action on the streets. you actually deliver the weapons difference reason
ergo when your countrypeople see our action on the streets they tend to misunderstand - plenty of comments on ZH to underscore this
our countries, with the exception of the UK, were also founded by revolutions, so I don't see this point, too.
We have two options in Spain:1) Continue the reckless policies of the Socialist that have taken the country to near ruin or 2) Implement the most important and significant reforms ever by a Spanish government. The majority of Spanairds profoundly voted for change and understand there is no option!
well said - nice to hear
The International Masters want a global socialist tyranny.
These "protestors" in each country have been organized by the same Banksters and astroturfed to each country.
We citizens want to be left alone.
If we do, we eventually will have to Fight for it, and some of us are going to die.
I just hope we get a few of them in the process.

Not without changing to a non-debt based monetary system. That's the root of the problems, and is the same as in the US and all over the world. Debt saturation is killing the world economy - there is not enough income in the world to service such massive debts as we ALL have. The only way to change this is to reset the system to non-debt based, accountable money. Now how exactly that looks, is up for much more detailed discussion. But without that basic change - none of these massive problems we see worldwide will change.
Here's one idea of how to change the money system:
http://economicedge.blogspot.com/2009/12/freedoms-vision-outline.html - accountable non-debt based money, accountable to the people.
Kinda looks like Detriot on a normal day.
The only thing i want to know about the 4th picture from Spain is: what the hell is Colin Farrell doing there? He should be in Dublin, no?
Zapatero is on vacation!
This is so wrong! It reminds me of a crash in the South American ( Andes)
I don't want to eat my fellow man!
Why don't they just create their own Federal Reserve, go back to printing their own money and then walk away from their Euro based debt...
Startover. Problem solved.
These folks are protesting the ideas and agenda advanced by Zero Hedge. Now that is ironic.
"the ideas and agenda advanced by Zero Hedge."
And what do you think those are, exactly?
Hate to be insensitive, but are there any pubicly traded companies who make riot control gear? Seems like there will be a lot of need for that coming up and the stock of those companies could do what Ruger has.
invest in Raytheon, et al and you're sure to profit from this overthrow of humanity.

Arizona House Bill 2549: Bill to Censor Electronic Speech on Governor's Desk
Arizona House Bill 2549 would update the state's telephone harassment law to apply to the Internet and other electronic communications. It would make it a crime to communicate via electronic means speech that is intended to "annoy," "offend," "harass" or "terrify," as well as certain sexual speech. However, because the bill is not limited to one-to-one communications, H.B. 2549 would apply to the Internet as a whole, thus criminalizing all manner of writing, cartoons, and other protected material the state finds offensive or annoying.
Show's how stupid they are. They want to stop the public from bullying politicians? Clearly, they haven't a clue.
"and other protected material the state finds offensive or annoying."
Well, there goes what's left of the First Amendment...the US Constitution is under massive an unending attack. Will we care enough to defend it?

This is how things work in all countries. Whatever used to belong to their people, today it belongs to the multinational companies of the Club. People were betrayed by their given leaderships and they lost everything. Capitals and markets were handed to the Club bosses. If you understand what is going on in Greece, you can understand what is going on in Britain, France, and Germany etc..

Authored by PANAGIOTIS TRAIANOU
The American version may come sooner than later. The race baiting by government officials and the likes of Sharpton and company over the Trayvon shooting maybe the trigger that ignites the maelstrom. Black Panthers offering rewards, officials wearing hoodies are putting an already frenzied sheeple on trigger status. What better way to thin and ultimately control an armed population than to have them shoot each other? If TPTB are successful with this one, it may get severely ugly very quickly. Then comes the national guard, militarized police on every corner and complete martial law. IMHO.
Endgame. Western Financial collapse, Civil War, martial law throughout Europe & N America.
All orchestrated and co-ordinated at one time.
Then the attack on Iran with draftees impressed like slaves into the NWO Army.
Within the coming chaos there will be opportunities to survive outside the reach of the Illuminati.

You Are The Resistance.
These conspiracy theories are utter bullshit . The problems are caused by excessive debt and the refusal by governments and voters to accept real solutions.
In Asia, they accepted real solutions in the nineties and it shows now.
Concerning the attack on Iran: the US has done nothing but attacking strategically important countries the past century.
What's new?
Hoka-hey, bitchez! Did you think you were going to live forever?
You should have been leading a charge against the Germans in WW1!
SPOT ON!!!! The soft underbelly of the USA IS its attitude towards RACE. The Blacks have been given carte blanche on so much that they have been emboldened to demand for MORE concessions. Still not sure what MLK did and I am still wondering why I have to drive on so MANY roads that are named after him. Hell, why don't we just re-name the country United States of MLK? I don't mind that there is a month federally designated for black history, I don't mind that there are streets, buildings, edifices, etc... name after MLK. What I do mind is that if I disagree with a black man solely on principles that I am now a racist. I will cross swords with any man regardless of background, upbringing, ethnicity, etc...
and...
I am still wondering what it is that the current president did to recieve a Nobel Peace Prize. Continuing two wars, starting two wars and enabling one more. If I were on the Nobel committee I would truly have to re-consider the award AND the money (or was it gold that BHO recieved???) He sure is ONE PEACEFULL GUY!
Just Saying!
Somehow I doubt this ends as hoped by The present PTB.
THIS being a permanent capitulation by the Greeks, Spanish, Portuguese and Italians at least.
These bailout debts are meant to end in a foreclosure.
Strategic Default may have a whole new meaning in time.
little boyz, Makes me laugh!
why does this seem bullish on Monday?
Just the growing pains of the New World Order.
Sure, the peasantry in Europe will fuss a little, but in the end they will capitulate to the plans of their masters.
All hail the New World Order. All hail our neo-feudal masters!
The economy is expected to shrink by as much as 2.7 percent this year and could find little to spark growth if the government is forced to raise taxes to meet this years 5.3 percent deficit goal and the target of 3 percent in 2013.
This paragraph sums up the core problem with all free-spending governments: Slashing spending is not an option.
They rely on growth of the economy to generate more taxes. That's the only option in their eyes.
But economies aren't growing anywhere, not even China.
They say America's economy is growing 2% / yr. No way. More like shrinking 7% / yr. The only "growth" is higher prices from inflation and currency debasement.
Same thing in Europe. Germany's economy might be holding even, but it's not growing. Everybody else's economy is shrinking.
Governments in America and Europe are painting themselves into a corner. It takes more money each year to service growing debt, but no more money is coming in, so they have to borrow more money each year, which means more money spent on servicing debt.
We're 3 years into massive government borrowing now. They can keep this game going about two more years, then it'll all collapse, or they'll be printing so much currency the dollar and euro will simply collapse.
I believe it'll be the later. Printing so much currency the dollar and euro simply collpase.
It amazes me how smart financial people will try to keep this sovereign debt ponzi scheme going till the dollar and euro simply collapse and become worthless.
But it won't be the first time. Weimar Germany did it. Argentina did it. Zimbabwe did it. Even Roman emperors did it till the entire empire collapsed.
I can't think of a single time in history where a national government slashed spending and stopped printing to avoid collapsing the currency.
It certainly won't happend in this day and age.
Sovereign money would work much better than debt-based money.
Riots in Spain..hah, they just put soccer on tv and both rioters and the police will immediately run home to watch the game..
And so it was written.
My life fades. The vision dims. All that remains are memories. I remember a time of chaos. Ruined dreams. This wasted land. But most of all, I remember the Road Warrior. The man we called 'Max'.
To understand who he was, you have to go back to another time. When the world was powered by the black fuel. And the desert sprouted great cities of pipe and steel. Gone now, swept away. For reasons long forgotten, two mighty warrior tribes went to war and touched off a blaze which engulfed them all. Without fuel they were nothing. They built a house of straw. The thundering machines sputtered and stopped. Their leaders talked and talked and talked. But nothing could stem the avalanche. Their world crumbled. The cities exploded. A whirlwind of looting, a firestorm of fear. Men began to feed on men.
On the roads it was a white line nightmare. Only those mobile enough to scavenge, brutal enough to pillage would survive. The gangs took over the highways, ready to wage war for a tank of juice. And in this maelstrom of decay, ordinary men were battered and smashed.
Men like Max. The warrior Max. In the roar of an engine, he lost everything. And became a shell of a man, a burnt out, desolate man, a man haunted by the demons of his past, a man who wandered out into the wasteland. And it was here, in this blighted place, that he learned to live again.

Mad Max....Bitchez!!!
BTW, where is the "revolutionary razor"?
oh, never mind...
Those pictures are terrific. I hope there won´t be any revolution in Spain. The situation of the regional debt reminds me Argentina during 90s. The central government was unable to moderate the provinces and it augmented the financial crisis, that hit the country due to the Ley de Convertibilidad (this law maintained fixed course 1peso=1dolar).
The assertion that Greeks sabatoged their own economy in order to extract more money from Germany -- an assertion that has been oft-repeated on ZH -- is utterly laughable. The reasons for this are many, but here a few. First, Greece's economy was sabatoged not by Greeks, but precisely by Germany -- a country which another ZH contributor has rightly annointed as the new vampire squid of Europe. This was accomplished by unsustainable fiscal and trade imbalances, followed by relentless German demands for Greek austerity, even in the face of a severely contracting Greek economy. Second, the money "extracted" from Germany was not destined primarily for Greek coffers, but rather for the coffers of European and in particular German and French banks, in yet another bailout of banker profligacy. Third, by "sabatoging" their economy, Greeks would have been impoverishing themselves, even after taking into account whatever meager crumbs might be sent their way by an increasingly parasitic and domineering Germany. Greeks therefore had no motive whatsoever to sabatoge their economy. The bottom line is that there are many good ideas percolating on the ZH website, but the notion that Greeks sabatoged their own economy is decidedly not one of them.
