State Of Emergency Issued For New York

Tyler Durden's picture

Hopefully, this is as bad as it will get. Per Reuters, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Thursday declared a state of emergency to prepare for the potential impact of Hurricane Irene, which could hit the state this weekend. The formal declaration allows the state to aid counties, cities and towns "more effectively and quickly," get help from the national Emergency Management Assistance Compact and get federal help earlier, the Democratic governor said in a statement. "We are communicating with our federal and local partners to track the storm and to plan a coordinated response, and we will deploy resources as needed to the areas expected to be hit the hardest," Cuomo said.

All that said, we would be delighted to see the following scene on 200 West Street:

This is the origin of the bloomberg relabeled image on the other thread. It has the predictions of various weather models of the storm. Usually any hurricane that shows up in the atlantic gets tracked here.

Good point. I wonder if any buildings housing any significant evidence of the whole mortgage fraud and other financial industry crimes will suddenly collapse from this hurricane. If so, it will somehow be the only building that collapses.

Of course if it does happen the entire wreckage, including any of that evidence, will be carted off and destroyed in a foreign country because the emotional effect of the collapse was just too much to bear.

Yeah I know it's all just wild conspiracy crap, but anymore you have to wonder how the criminals that run all of this will use anything and everything to their advantage.

I have an anecdotally un-funny story associated with the insta-shipment of scrap from NYC after 9/11. Was on a local flight and happened to be sitting next to a talkative attorney.

Turned out he looked after the business interests for a very big south indian scrap steel importer. Turns out this guy "got" a part of the sub-sub-sub contract to get a few tonnes over here to india to process. He looked very proud of the fact. Also turns out he was one of the many  importers who "benefitted" from this sudden availability of those massive columns at 'very low cost".

So this was probably late 2001/early 2002.

It took the steel a little while to get into the supply chain. Then, in 2008, thsi story abotu radioactive buttons from Otis elevators, perhaps some remember it.

Of course it only got discovered because the stuff went to France:

"The Mafelec workers were using materials that came from an Indian supplier, it said. Faint traces of Cobalt 60, a radioactive form of the metal cobalt, were found in the buttons.

The ASN said it believed that several Indian companies had exported products contaminated with Cobalt 60 to a number of countries.

It named them as Bunts, Laxmi, SKM Steels, Vipras Castings, and Pradeep Metals, and said it was in contact with Indian authorities "in order to find out the result of inspections being carried out on these sites."

Officials here said the radioactivity in the buttons was probably due to the fact that the metals used to make them were from contaminated recycled materials.

Swedish officials meanwhile said Monday that steel items imported from India showing faint traces of radioactivity had been found in Sweden."

Just google radioactive Otis elevator buttons for more.

So really, WTC and it's radioactive legacy, studiously denied, is everywhere and no one really knows, because recycling makes the supply chain hard to track back.

http://www.weather.com/weather/hurricanecentral/article/irene-rare-dange...

It is becoming clear that Irene's future track will NOT be a Hurricane Earl (2010) scenario where a hurricane barely brushes the Outer Banks of North Carolina then stays well offshore. - History tells us that no category 4 hurricane has made landfall north of the South Carolina/North Carolina border. That said, some computer guidance indicates a category 4 landfall over eastern North Carolina and this solution can NOT be ruled out.

Intensity is still 99 KT at flight level.  The hurricane is in the late stage of an eye-wall replacement cycle and the former double wall has closed to a single wall 30 Km wide still open at the south.  One of two things happens from here (1) the eye fails to consolidate and it makes landfall as a cat two or (2) the eye does consolidate and it strengthens overnight and into tomorrow a.m. in which case we have major big time problems.

Ms. Forester de Rothschild said with the fresh investment, she believes Weather Central will further expand its services into international TV channels. Ms. Forester de Rothschild also said she expects to sell weather data to insurers, commodities traders and other investors whose holdings or assets can be impaired by storms or other severe weather. And she said she hopes Weather Central can take advantage of people seeking out personalized weather information in more places, from smart phones to Internet-connected television sets.

“The advantage of a family investment is that we don’t have five, six, seven years and out, or an obligation to give anybody back their money,” said Ms. Forester de Rothschild. “It is our hope that we’ll be in this for generations, and that we will grow it a lot.”

Ms. Forester de Rothschild also said the company also has mulled starting a cable-TV channel, similar to the Weather Channel. The Weather Channel was purchased more than two years ago in a $3.5 billion deal led by NBC Universal and private-equity firms Blackstone Group and Bain Capital.

Dr. Jeff Master's blog discussing a few of the potential impacts from a direct or near strike to the NE coast. Irene has the potential to be catastrophic. Mayor Bloomberg stating NYC would make the decision of mandatory evacuations Friday afternoon is a complete joke. Moving and setting up shelter operations for 50,000, much less 500,000 people 24 hours before the rain begins shows a disconnect from the intricacies of such an operation. Worse case: Cat 2 and landfall NYC would mean upwards of 15 feet of water in parts of the city, lost communications and electrical capacity for potentially a month or more due to flooding of the power stations and infrastructure damage.

A few of the things to consider in a worst-case: high rises and apt buildings with no power for weeks during summer, inability to send food and water to certain areas of the city, thousands dead with no place to put the bodies, sewage awash in the streets, breakdown of civil order (like Katrina), fiber optic cables fried, subways filled with seawater, fires in building with no way to put with no way to put them out. The people, of course, are the wildcard. Call me a cynic but I  just don't think they'll go meekly into the night like the Japanese and Fukishima. In such circumstances, the thin layer of civility will quickly come off and reveal the barbarian beneath.

I am an emergency manager; it's what I do for a living. This thing could be bad, much worse than a Katrina in terms of loss of life and financial and economic impact.

Those location all border NYC by Long Island Sound. Short answer, probably not. But  it depends on the planning and the resources available to CT emergency management division, the  utility companies. If well prepared, the answer is yes. But well prepared is few and far between. I would not depend on any government agency getting it's act together or responding efficiently in order to provide necessities for you and your family. Best plan: Be prepared to take care of yourself for a month or longer. Don't depend on anyone else to do it for you.

Like the predictions of mighty snowstorms through NYC this will end in one of two ways.  Either we will get 3 droplets of rain or we will take a mother____ing 2 x 4 to the head.  That is exaclty how last winter shook out.

I remember the one Sunday where I called our office manager and told her they should preemptively close the office.  They did nothing until the following morning when 15 inches of snow were on the ground.

The next time they predicted such a storm it was clear and sunny the next day and drier than granny's honeyspot after 50 years without grampy.

There are a shit load of nuke plants:

"As of the morning of August 25, a number of nuclear power plants appeared to be within the storm’s projected path: Brunswick, Harris, Indian Point, Pilgrim, Millstone, Surry, Seabrook, Vermont Yankee, Limerick, Calvert Cliff, Peach Bottom, Three Mile Island, Susquehanna and Salem. Of those, the plants further inland and to the north would likely see less impact."

I know you're being sarcastic, but I can't help but jump in on that one.  GE *does* have excellent designers- and high standards.  They also still source a lot of their parts in the US.

I've actually been in on some of the builds for GE, and, no shit, they are better designers than Raytheon (the guys who bring you the US air force, and their associated space toys.)

I know it's fun to pick on the big guys, and it fits the meme here, but GE is a great company, no matter what you think.  What are you bitching about, anyhow?  That an outdated reactor in Japan couldn't handle a 9.0 earthquake that was immediately followed by a giant tsunami?  Heh.  Like to see you make anything that can withstand that kind of wrath o' god better!

Human diversity is amazing.

I mean no offense, ploceque, but to live in New York City would be, for me, like being consigned to one of the lower circles of Hell.  The crowds, the noise, the lack of privacy and solitude, the impersonality of daily life, the near-complete divorce from the natural world, the soul-sucking rat race existence --- I would rather die, literally. (None of those factors of modern life are unique to NYC, of course --- but they are all particularly evident there).  However, such radical personal differences are part of what makes civilization so grand.
