State Of Emergency Issued For New York

Tyler Durden's picture

Hopefully, this is as bad as it will get. Per Reuters, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Thursday declared a state of emergency to prepare for the potential impact of Hurricane Irene, which could hit the state this weekend. The formal declaration allows the state to aid counties, cities and towns "more effectively and quickly," get help from the national Emergency Management Assistance Compact and get federal help earlier, the Democratic governor said in a statement. "We are communicating with our federal and local partners to track the storm and to plan a coordinated response, and we will deploy resources as needed to the areas expected to be hit the hardest," Cuomo said.

All that said, we would be delighted to see the following scene on 200 West Street:

If Irene doesn't dissipate or otherwise weaken significantly, there's gonna be a lot of dead bodies, I'm afraid.  Folks up there just have no frickin' clue about what these storms are capable of.  I see so much arrogance in the words of those doubters who live up there.  They mock what they do not understand, at their grave peril.

Whoever can, needs to get the F out of the way of this storm NOW.  Don't expect anyone to save you once it makes landfall.  If it turns out to be a false alarm, so what?  At least you took steps to safeguard you and yours.  Better to be safe, and out some time and money, than a corpse floating out to sea.

I don't wish the kind of death and destruction I witnessed during and after Katrina on anyone.

In Baltimore: I'm astonished by how unprepared this area of the country is for this hurricane.  People think they're going to go home tomorrow and just pick up a bag of ice (for the milk!!! in case the power goes out.  HAHAHA).  Maybe it'll be a little windy.  Some places close to the shore may get flooded.  Not a big deal. Some people haven't cancelled their plans for the Jersey shore.  Some of them kind of remember Isabel in 2003.

God please don't let anything happen to the fine citizens of New York----we as a nation cannot afford it.  9/11 cost us $1.8 million per family, I cannot imagine what would happen if a hurricane were to hit that state.  Remember people, it is not just Wall Street we have to give our money to---the entire state of New York feels "special" and "entitled" to the nations wealth, so lets build a human shield to protect this most precious state and the people of New York---afterall, we all know they are much more special than the rest of the nation.  in fact, the citizens in the rest of the country are all expendable so everyone pray that nothing happens to our precious New York, ground zero for all that is wrong with mankind.

I live in western new york and we get next to squat from the state of NY. All the resources (state and federal) get sucked into the black hole called NYC. While most NYC dwellers hate guns, liberty, and self sufficiency, the rest of the state has quite a different point of view. Please don't lump us in with NYC!

He has obviously never been to NY. Otherwise he would know that most of the youth that live in the city are kids from the midwest, who thought it would be cool to move to NY because they saw it on Friends, listened to Punk or Rap.

I'd also guess hes never seen Buffalo.

We now know whose comments to ignore.

Thu, 08/25/2011 - 21:01 | 1602239 WSP
WSP's picture

I stand "corrected"----NYC, not New York.    Also, I do get the kids from the midwest deal-----totally get it----New York "city" attracts the nations sociopaths, as evidenced by so many examples including media control, money control, and lawsuits against the nation due to terrorism----yes, I get it.

With that said, New Yorkers (NYC) in general are a rude bunch.  I live in a university town and it is ALWAYS the cars with New York City plates that tailgate, pull out in front, etc----ALWAYS.   The bottom line is New York (city) is the epicenter of the "me, me, me" society we live in.  I am not saying all people do not have the propensity to be sociopaths whose sole go in life is "me, me, me" at everyone else's expense----people are people, New York (city) just seems to attract and breed this behavior to the extreme.

Also, I estimate that at my business we get at least one call per week from rough talking salesman from New York (city) that want to sell us paper "investments".  When we tell them not interested, they slam the phone in our ear----who called who?   Think about it----they are saying since we cannot rip you off----f@ck off!   I also understand this behavior, but the fact is NYC is where the calls come from.

Let me leave you with this thought.  Last month I visited Nags Head, NC, and the area we stayed in was all New York and New Jersey plates (spending the money they get by pushing paper and pillaging the nations wealth).  None of these people are friendly-----they go on vacation and can't even smile or relax----just uptight people always either plotting to screw somebody or worried somebody is trying to screw them.  One day I walked up to the ice cream shop with my daughter and held the door open for a family that was from New York (I noted the plates when they pulled in).   One of the ladies said to the other lady---"I feel like I am in a different world" referring to my kindness in holding the door open.  Well, where I am from that is just common courtesy.  IOW, people from NYC always think everyone is out to get them, that kindness is never kindness but rather, because someone wants to "get something".   The bottom line what I am speaking is truth and I am sorry if you don't like it----it is what it is!

In summary, the world is full of criminals and I know that NYC does not have a monopoloy on that, however, it is ground zero for the greed, corruption, war mongering, fiat currency, central banking (and on, and on).  Since NYC controls the media (and thus the masses) and spends 24 hous a day trying to figure out how to steal from not just its own citizens but the world, it represents to me all that has gone wrong with our nations "experiment" as a republic and is the poster child for greed, corruption, and all that is evil in humans.

I lived in union city for a while and spent quite a lot of my time in lower Manhattan, I can tell you evacuations of any part of NYC is a logistical nightmare, you try telling 1 or 2 million people to get there grab bags and go. good luck. NYC was defiantly not designed with any sort of possibility of evac in an orderly fashion in mind. that's always been a point of contention with indian point, no infrastructure in place to move that many people in short notice. Seeing this shaping up makes me glad I moved upstate, although it's weird to see even eastern and central NY where I am in the cone of Irene's projected influence. Anyways, to all ZHer's in the big apple stay safe and stay dry...

And if the hurricane arrives only (roughly) six hours earlier or six hours later than your prediction, it will arrive at high tide instead of low tide, and be a major disaster.  Trying to predict a hurricane's landfall to within several hours, days ahead of the event, is an impossibility and a fool's errand.

oo-la-la! Irine is gettin a bit irate ... lots of radial outflow in the upper levels i.e. the radial 'spikes', especially in the NW quadrant. this is the tops of the clouds being blown off giant anvil-head storms, via the vertical plume of air coming up from the eye spreading-out radially to the margins) ... it's a classic sign of active and significant intensification ... plus the eye is also about to blow itself clear ... so it could get to about a low cat 4 by landfall if that radial outflow plume continues for 12 hours or so more (it means the central pressure is still deeping).

Edit: This image shows the radial outflow symmetry is also pretty good in the other quadrants - another classic sign of intensification. Still a mid-strength cat3, but clearly winding-up and growing in area. This is going to be a big hit ... probably MUCH weaker when it gets to NY though.
