From ABC

STEPHANOPOULOS:  You were against the individual mandate…

OBAMA:  Yes.

STEPHANOPOULOS:  …during the campaign.  Under this mandate, the government is forcing people to spend money, fining you if you don’t. How is that not a tax?

OBAMA:  Well, hold on a second, George. Here — here’s what’s happening.  You and I are both paying $900, on average — our families — in higher premiums because of uncompensated care.  Now what I’ve said is that if you can’t afford health insurance, you certainly shouldn’t be punished for that.  That’s just piling on. If, on the other hand, we’re giving tax credits, we’ve set up an exchange, you are now part of a big pool, we’ve driven down the costs, we’ve done everything we can and you actually can afford health insurance, but you’ve just decided, you know what, I want to take my chances.  And then you get hit by a bus and you and I have to pay for the emergency room care, that’s…

STEPHANOPOULOS:  That may be, but it’s still a tax increase.

OBAMA:  No.  That’s not true, George.  The — for us to say that you’ve got to take a responsibility to get health insurance is absolutely not a tax increase.  What it’s saying is, is that we’re not going to have other people carrying your burdens for you anymore than the fact that right now everybody in America, just about, has to get auto insurance. Nobody considers that a tax increase. People say to themselves, that is a fair way to make sure that if you hit my car, that I’m not covering all the costs.

STEPHANOPOULOS:  But it may be fair, it may be good public policy…

OBAMA:  No, but — but, George, you — you can’t just make up that language and decide that that’s called a tax increase.  Any…

STEPHANOPOULOS:  Here’s the…

OBAMA:  What — what — if I — if I say that right now your premiums are going to be going up by 5 or 8 or 10 percent next year and you say well, that’s not a tax increase; but, on the other hand, if I say that I don’t want to have to pay for you not carrying coverage even after I give you tax credits that make it affordable, then…

STEPHANOPOULOS:  I — I don’t think I’m making it up. Merriam Webster’s Dictionary: Tax — “a charge, usually of money, imposed by authority on persons or property for public purposes.”

OBAMA:  George, the fact that you looked up Merriam’s Dictionary, the definition of tax increase, indicates to me that you’re stretching a little bit right now.  Otherwise, you wouldn’t have gone to the dictionary to check on the definition.  I mean what…

STEPHANOPOULOS:  Well, no, but…

OBAMA:  …what you’re saying is…

STEPHANOPOULOS:  I wanted to check for myself.  But your critics say it is a tax increase.

OBAMA:  My critics say everything is a tax increase.  My critics say that I’m taking over every sector of the economy.  You know that. Look, we can have a legitimate debate about whether or not we’re going to have an individual mandate or not, but…

STEPHANOPOULOS:  But you reject that it’s a tax increase?

OBAMA:  I absolutely reject that notion.

I just sit back, shake my head in awestruck wonder and marvel at the mind numbing stupidity of it all.

washington DC is a parasite infested disease, a leech infected open wound on this nation and it needs to be cured with the greatest of haste lest it takes the rest of us down with it...

and today was another very large step in that direction.

this election we the people need to ban together, turn our backs to the puppets and their masters, refuse to play in their sandbox and refuse to participate in this sham, right/left bullshit "election". let the poles remain empty and desolate this November. send the message loud and clear via our silence.

"we don't need you anymore."

don't vote 2012.

They got to Roberts somehow,  i think this is the only explanation for this. It surprised the market, prediction markets and many shrewd observers. Something was going on behind the scenes for sure.

Dear O,

I'ts called an economic tax. Nobody is making up language. Whether or not the IRS administers it is irrelevant. No different than an oil price increase or hike in corn prices.

This is just another example of how the POTUS may be a Constitutional Law scholar, and a great talker, he has no idea or concept of high school level economics.

Ok. So the Meth lab cocksucker gets blown up. The cost will be 1MM to the hospital.

If he comes in blown up and high without the necessary insurance, then he goes to jail?

WHERE WE CAN SUPPORT HIM IN JAIL AND PAY 1MM TO FIX THE FUCKER THAT SHOULD BE DEAD!

proz0 is right

it wasn't a tax when they passed it

it became a tax today, b/c the chief justice said it was!  L0L!!! s'priZe!

this  "tax" everybody is disgustingly discussing  won't pay for 2 minutes of healthcare for anybody, btw...

if this ever gets even close to working for people, they will change it to something else, pdq

i saw a neighbor sitting on the curb yesterday;  she had been in the hospital for three weeks with pneumonia and they want her to quit smoking too

i told her i assumed the gucci oxygen bag was a temp accessory;  and she said:  oh yes!  when she finished recovering she wouldn't need it

sh'e gained 15 pounds already!  i told her at least they didn't want her cutting back on the sex any further and just left her flopped on the curb,  figuring i'd give her a hand if she was still there after i went shopping for mo cherries and stinky cheese

someone else may have moved her...

probably her doctor or hospital didn't want that gold mine lying in the street

can you imagine what this one smoker's 3 weeks in the hospital musta meant to them and to the glory of our common GDP, comrade BiCheZ?

Weird.  When we pay north of 50% income tax in Canada at the top level to pay for universal health care, it always feels like a tax.

When there’s no law, maneuvering the system ensues and the producers pay for it.

For instance,

I know a family from the Middle East living the good life here (after a stop over in England) on high incomes who came here to escape the “evils” of their ME leader.

But now Papa, who just qualified for Medicare, has taken his younger-by-15-years wife to Canada were she will get free health care until she too qualifies for Medicare in the U.S. on his ticket, and then he and she will move back to the U.S. where their children’s families now live, to collect. Follow the freebies!

Good ‘ol U.S. and Canadian taxpayers. Reminds me of the post today to CHS’ Some Thoughts On Overseas Investing In U.S. Real Estate by BinAround:

“A very thoughtful essay. I've seen my hometown, Vancouver, totally invaded by Asians.  My elementary school was 90% caucasian in the 1970s, is now 90% Chinese.  House prices of over $1mln for a modest three bedroom have disenfranchised the youth of Vancouver.  If you grew up near the city, too bad, you must make room for the Chinese who have bought your parent's house.  Vancouver is now a Bejing suburb.   The quaint beauty of the city is gone, goodbye gardens, bungalos and views...replaced by large pink houses, highrises and 20yr old Chinese boys in sports cars.

Why are Vancouver house prices more than DOUBLE those in Seattle, just two hours south?  Because of the tax system in US vs Canada makes Canada more attractive than the USA for wealthy foreigners.  In the USA, citizens pay tax on worldwide income, or go to jail.  In Canada, only residents, not citizens, pay tax on worldwide income;  and jail is rare.  Become a Canadian citizen, buy a house, but stay abroad for most of the year.  No Canadian tax. Can't do that in Seattle.  Then you get free healthcare, decent education, clean air, friendly people, safety.

Who would have guessed that Greenspan/Bernake money policies which stimulated consumption causing trade deficits and windfalls to those well placed in China, coupled with Canada's lax tax system and Trudeau's "multi-culturalism" would so dramatically alter the society of Vancouver?

Much safer for the Chinese whose income and assets are abroad to avoid the IRS dragnet by owing Vancouver.

But if you get hit by that bus and you don't have insurance, you still have to pay the emergency room, and they will come after you with the entire posse of Debt collectors to do it, EVEN though you were paying the $1000 annually as a tax.

So this has to be illegal. They're saying that it is NOT illegal because you "have a choice" to buy the insurance to avoid the tax (but the insurance might cost ya $5000 a year). They already determine exactly WHO can afford to go buy it....Even though none of these fascist dogs don't have any idea what your bills already are. Say a person owes $40K in student loans and has a huge payment for that.... Are they willing to begin the process of re-evaluating Bush's Bankruptsy laws?

If you can't get out of certain payments, and your income is not that great (because the central banking system had to be bailed out to the destruction of Main Street economy), You will end up on the streets or at the least in a court room where the Government will "Adjust" your debt so they can put you back out "on the work line" and keep producing for the Banking outfit.

They've just convinced themselves that not buying health INSURANCE is somehow "costing" everyone else on health CARE. Never mind that the hospitals P&L has nothing to do with a insurance company's P&L. The hospitals can't charge whatever they want. So uninsured health care services don't cost the individual consumer anything. That's not how price theory works. But the retard brigade doesn't care. They think insurance and care are the same things.

Just do the responsible thing: get rid of health insurance. Save your money. Buy gold and silver. Take care of your body and watch this hit the fan. Keep your eyes and ears open for the free market response to this. There are already people who are looking at this and saying its obviously fucked up, there's a way around them. Freedom is always 5 steps ahead of these folks.

Anyways the admin should tax the corporates more who make more money than ever before and the portion of salaries has never been smaller in US history. Look and the blodget presentation on that.

I don't see ACA as being any different from soc. sec or medicare - either you believe that government should distribute wealth in the form of taxation in the name of public good or you see it as an affront to personal liberty.  I understand why both sides of the argument feel the way they do.  To me it comes down to how much you trust the government and the democratic process.  Either you believe Congress will act rationally and not use the power of taxation irresponsibly or you don't.  And if Congress does abuse its power, you either believe that the democratic process will counter that Congressional abuse or you don't.  I do believe the passion and the emotion is less about the ACA or the mandate and more about the increasing American loss of faith in their government.  To me the only solution is term limits in Congress.  Bring the business of running this country back to the people.  Make it seem like a civic duty once more - but take responsibility - don't just spew venom.  Only that will bring back the faith we need.

What exactly is affordable about the ACA?  Seems like every insurer is raising the premiums and co-pays...sooner or later beyond the ability of a critical mass to pay...which leads to stage 2, which is the real universal healthcare system they wanted all along.  Only question is do they force the Nordic, French, or God-forbid, the British NHS model?

What they really need is a synthesis of the Commerce Clause and the Congressional taxation powers to severly drive down healthcare costs AND debt...Soylent Green meets Logan's Run.  Yes Boomers, run into the light and see paradise!  Poor people come for the free food!  Middle class, enjoy the jobs in the processing plants!  Reprocess gold fillings and resell as bullion to apply towards the SS "lockbox."
