Steve Jobs Has Passed Away (1955-2011)

Tyler Durden's picture

Steve Jobs has passed away, according to Apple. May the greatest one man success story of our times rest in peace.

Statement by the Apple board:

We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.

Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.

His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.

And from his family:

Steve died peacefully today surrounded by his family.

In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family. We are thankful to the many people who have shared their wishes and prayers during the last year of Steve's illness; a website will be provided for those who wish to offer tributes and memories.

We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share our feelings for Steve. We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief.

To capture the visionary genius of the man, and truly the legend, we repost probably the most comprehensive interview that Jobs ever conducted, this one with Playboy magazine from 1985

Trav, darlin, I think you might need to take a deep breath or you'll spontaneously combust.

Just because a lot of icult people are annoying hipsters and Pelosi-loving yuppies does not mean that Apple products did not enrich people's lives.

I was an Apple-hater for a long time just because it was popular and I tend to avoid popular trendy shit.  However, when I started trying those products out, they did, indeed, change my life.  Not in an "oh Steve Jobs you are my God!" way, but I am certainly amazed that one man (yes, the things that happened under his leadership can be attributed to him to a large degree, because innovators and engineers and great geeky minds would be sitting in their moldy basements playing dungeons and dragons or some geeky shit if he did not channel their energy into something great and then make sure the products evolved to suit what consumers actually wanted) ...that one man could oversee so many successful innovations.

Trav......calm. the. fuck. down.

All I can say for 100% sure is that Windows7 is the worst piece of crap operating system I've ever had the intense misfortune to buy and experience. Each day I hate it more and more.

Steve was no hero to me, I really don't give a fig about him, but two very important things Steve Jobs understood innately, that Bill Gates had and has not a fucking clue about:

1. Customization means that I get what I want, whereas Bill Gates thinks customization means that MS gets what MS wants ... and you can go get fucked ... you mere 'user' licencee arsehole.

2. Steve Jobs understood that an operating system was about the OPERATOR, whereas Bill Gates felt and feels way down deep that the operator is surplus to requirement and a source of dissonance, errors, and a NET security liability ... as for Bill, the DEAD SYSTEM was everything ... and boy does it show.

So yeah, credit where it's due ... so ... good Jobby

Oh look. Someone is providing heresay evidence about Steve Jobs. He must be jesus then. I'm so fucking glad you know how steve jobs feels way down deep. You are truley connected to a facade fuck face entity. Now grab a bible and tell us over and over about how jesus feels and what he'd do and ask us to donate to the collection plate.

How about you address the unrealistic expectations placed on so many of Apples developers. It's an institutional hazard. So many dev's in big places get dropped in a meat grinder and can't have a life unless they perform skittle shitting feats of magic .. but at what cost? Your logic is shit when you're trying to be successful in something you've trained in and people beat you like a monkey to get what they want.

No man is an island entire of itself; every man
is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe

because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom

"Death is our eternal companion," don Juan said with a most serious air. "It is always to our left, at an arm's length. It always will until the day it taps you."

its a whole lot LESS %age wise than what happens on a daily bases here in the United States at American companies. FoxCon employs 800,000 people.  5 suicides is WELL below any normal average of almost any group, anywhere.

You know, here in the GREAT USA, where you have to choose whether to buy food for your family or pay some illegal government 'tax', where your boss hasn't even been at work for a month while you have spent 80 hours a week there,  where we spend more money on jails than we do on education (and education is MASSIVELY overpriced!)

You likely are right. But at least he set an example, one of pursuing excellence, even in the face of intense opposition. That, and pursuit of long-term goals, instead of the fast-buck artists that are destroying the U.S. For example, it took Pixar a decade to make any money (Jobs purchased Pixar in 1986, Toy Story released in 1995).

I don't think he purchased Pixar.  I thought it was an offshot of his Next Computers which he started after he got fired from his own company.  Next were more like workstations like Sun Microsystems workstations.  Mainly used for graphics rendering.
