Steve Jobs Resigns As CEO Of Apple, Tim Cook Named CEO

Tyler Durden's picture

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

And the official Apple press release:

Apple’s Board of Directors today announced that Steve Jobs has resigned as Chief Executive Officer, and the Board has named Tim Cook, previously Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, as the company’s new CEO. Jobs has been elected Chairman of the Board and Cook will join the Board, effective immediately.

“Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company,” said Art Levinson, Chairman of Genentech, on behalf of Apple's Board. “Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration.”

“The Board has complete confidence that Tim is the right person to be our next CEO,” added Levinson. “Tim’s 13 years of service to Apple have been marked by outstanding performance, and he has demonstrated remarkable talent and sound judgment in everything he does.”

Jobs submitted his resignation to the Board today and strongly recommended that the Board implement its succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO.

As COO, Cook was previously responsible for all of the company’s worldwide sales and operations, including end-to-end management of Apple’s supply chain, sales activities, and service and support in all markets and countries. He also headed Apple’s Macintosh division and played a key role in the continued development of strategic reseller and supplier relationships, ensuring flexibility in response to an increasingly demanding marketplace.

First, and way more important than anything, long live Steve Jobs!  Let's hope and pray he is just pulling a Bill Gates.

Second, if the stock does dive like that I am buying huge.

Don't tell me that Mr. Market did not price in a departure sometime in the next few years for a man who had pancreatic cancer and a liver transplant in the past 5 years.  The company is still a steam locomotive.

No, they were doing that under his reign.  Perhaps, the jumping will stop.

I'm sure many of you will want to wax philosophic about his accomplishments as a CEO.  However, and as I see it, he was a massive net jobs exporter, and ultimately a financial backer of China.  I never really understood why he was lauded as a great American.

I do not wish him ill, nor do I worship at his alter.  But I am happy that the Apple zombies will be all flustered.  Watch for "bitey" people in coming days.

Whether you like the guy or not, you have to admit this means the end of an era.

I used the AppleII from the early days. I had one of the first portable computers, built on 3rd-party bits; an AppleIIc with a small gel battery and a monochrome SuperTwist LCD screen glued on. Dropped in a 4x clocked chip. It rocked. I was writing statistical software in machine language, and running a compiler for other things. Ah, fun times.

I was the first Masters student at CSU-Chico to publish the Thesis on a Mac. Rented a $10K printer for $500 a month, big money for me, but it was worth it. Had to teach the thesis editor what a "LaserWriter" was, and that I didn't have to use Courier font really, and carbon paper. Took months but she finally got it. Opened the door to every grad student who came after me. Someone had to do it.

Now I build web sites and code security applications. Don't need a Mac or a PC, use Linux and a text editor. But those earlier experiences on Apple kit got me headed this way, and I still love what I do. I'll do this until they shoot me like a tired old horse. Or maybe even after, in my dead dreams, a happy ghost in the vast machine.

Goodbye Steve Jobs. You really rocked our world.

So aptly put..."the end of an era" - anyone living in silicon valley during that time understands oh so well. Those were exiting times when electricity was in the air and American innovation was at it's finest hour.

Woz was the brains, but Jobs knew how to connect the dots and knew how to lead very talented people to higher levels.

Jobs isn't dead yet? Is he a living life support machine run by apple software? That guy has some resolve so mad props for still being able to breathe (there's an app for that? life support?)

Oh well, aapl @ $22 in 2 years. It was a great run, but when the brain is gone it's time to move on....unless

....there's an app for that too.

Is the slave camp (foxconn) still in China or are they moving it to Laous? Maybe we can get some dedicated lobbyists and have the underage slave camp moved to Los Angeles. California could use the slave labor right now to improve the UE rate. Nvmd, keep the pop on the gvt dole, easier to control.

Steve Jobs leaving won't be the decline of Apple.  People not being able to upgrade their iPhone every 6 months because they have no money because they have no jobs because Steve Jobs and the other globalists had their products made in China will be the decline of Apple.  Not to mention the cost of Energy going up.  But then again, that should mean more jobs coming back here.  After all, the cost of Energy will end up trumping the cost of labor.

Give in once, they'll fuck you for all eternity.

Say what you want about Jobs and Apple, but he is probably the most influential, successful, business executive of all time. Can you imagine being that fucking succussful? Everything you touch turns to gold? I am pretty sure he doesn't even have a bachelor's degree. The secret ingredient to Jobs' phenomenal success was LSD. I would highly suggest triping your balls off to anyone who is looking to gain a little knowledge. I think that was crucial for Jobs, he said so himself. Best exec ever in my opinion. Did he make the world a better place? That is debatable, but probably.

Your right....he doesn't have a degree.

He attended REED College for 6 months and hung around school for about 18 months.
He started taking the classes that interested him instead of the ones he had to.
This is where he got his interest in Typography and Calligraphy.
You can see this subtleties manifested in the early days of the Mac.

However, he did give an impressive commencement speech at Stanford a few years ago.

I wish you the best Steve.

You think Jobs was the only computer entrepreneur to take psychedelics?  He was successful in selling people on "cool and hip" - a fashion designer, no more.  If you buy Apple products you are a slave-sucker-moron.  Can you imagine what the world could have achieved if it hadn't been held back by the megacopyright corporations?  No, you can't, and nor can I,  bitchez.  You have no fucking idea!  Die, Jobs, die!

On behalf of my 86 year old, Normandy invasion, Navy vet, Father. Due to declining health, he can't get out more than a couple of hours per week. However, due to an iPad, he can read his hometown newspaper from several thousand miles away. In addition, stay in contact with his ever declining WWII buddies.

He hasn't had to reboot, scrub for viruses, install daily Flash and Windows patches. The thing just works.

Godspeed.

Maybe he would have better served the world.

Oh well, not my call. He did what he wanted, and probably enjoyed himself, and fuck it that's what we all want.

Forget Steve Jobs and it is time to bury Apple, it is over hyped and over priced. Competitors will kill their margin and foolishly many investors will get hammered. The catalyst will be that Jobs is out and its potential revaluation down commences as in reality it should have done long ago. Spend your money elsewhere and invest smarter.

I'm sure I'll get a lot of negs . I first owned an Apple IIe, which I bought for music, but I quickly sold it because a Commodore 64 did it better. A friend of mine had a small company that bought 3 Lisas's (at about 7k each). That was my intro to the mouse and the future Mac OS. My first Mac was  a 512, with no hard drive and an external floppy drive. I started with Word 1.0, Excel 1.0, Illustrator 1.0 and Pagemaker 1.0. The next was a Mac Plus, for which I bought an external 30 MB hard drive for the unbelieveably low price of $500. Every Mac after that cost me around $3000, and I owned a bunch. I used them not because of them being a Mac, but because of the available software. I watched as the world was all PC on Windows and I was in the small minority. My first Power PC broke 1 week after the 1-year warranty expired. It was a $1700 replacement of the motherboard. Apple said, "Too bad." I bought a Power Computing Mac clone as a protest, and Apple bought that company and closed them. But, I also had my first PC at work, and I discovered that Adobe Illustrator ran faster on the PC than on my latest gen Mac. That was an eye opener. Then, software appeared that I wanted that didn't have Mac versions. Then, all the software I needed would run on a PC and run faster. I bought my last Mac in 2003, just as a legacy machine and I've never looked back. My latest I7 PC cost me $850, not the $2500 equivqalent for a Mac. I'll never buy a Mac again.

I think Steve Jobs is the CEO legend and I admire him greatly as a marketing genius. But, I'm not gpoing to oo and ahhh because an iPad can do something I could do on a PC 10 years ago. But I think Apple turned into the evil empire, making a pact with the FoxConn devil. I'll never buy another overpriced piece of electronics from them.
