Steve Jobs Resigns As CEO Of Apple, Tim Cook Named CEO

Tyler Durden's picture

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

And the official Apple press release:

Apple’s Board of Directors today announced that Steve Jobs has resigned as Chief Executive Officer, and the Board has named Tim Cook, previously Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, as the company’s new CEO. Jobs has been elected Chairman of the Board and Cook will join the Board, effective immediately.

“Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company,” said Art Levinson, Chairman of Genentech, on behalf of Apple's Board. “Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration.”

“The Board has complete confidence that Tim is the right person to be our next CEO,” added Levinson. “Tim’s 13 years of service to Apple have been marked by outstanding performance, and he has demonstrated remarkable talent and sound judgment in everything he does.”

Jobs submitted his resignation to the Board today and strongly recommended that the Board implement its succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO.

As COO, Cook was previously responsible for all of the company’s worldwide sales and operations, including end-to-end management of Apple’s supply chain, sales activities, and service and support in all markets and countries. He also headed Apple’s Macintosh division and played a key role in the continued development of strategic reseller and supplier relationships, ensuring flexibility in response to an increasingly demanding marketplace.

I remember the early 2000's, and there were plenty of mp3 players that were non-macs. I remember being in Hong-Kong in 2000 in fact and seeing more of these mp3 players for sale that I could shake a stick at.

The iPod was mostly marketing that popularized it. There were many more players before the iPod came out, also they all had removable sd cards too, which is something i prefer and still use today. My mp3 playr is a memorex and cost 18$. When I jog with it, if it falls and breaks, I remove the sd card, and put it into another 20$ memorex mp3 player. If that would happen wih Apple, you need to pay to mail it in, then you wait for months for them to fix it, and that is if they don't tell you to go screw yourself!

Sure people, keep on buying your iExpensive products. I'll keep using my inexpensive equivalent, even if they are not trendy. I don't care.

Hands down, AAPL will go down as the world's greatest comeback story of all time.

Stock was trading at $6 in 2003 now over $350.  Anybody that invested in AAPL back then in size is now comfortably retired.  And if they sell tomorrow, with the stock down well off its $400 highs, the cap gains tax is only 15%.  Not 28%.  And, to boot, the stock has been 100% sponsored and supported by the PigMen and TPTB.

No need to ever worry about margin hikes, confiscation, punitive tax rates, etc.

I too have mixed feelings. I used Microsoft products while I was working in the world of finance. After that, I worked for several years as a consultant, and for the last five years have only used linux. I have never once used an Apple product or software, and have never been asked, in a work place to do so.

I was teasing a friend recently who was bragging about how much she like Apple's customer support. Huh! What are you talking about? I asked her. I haven't had a problem to need support since I switched to Linux in years. So she pays a lot of extra money to use Apple products and software, not to mention the classes she paid for, and I tease her about it. But she gets the last laugh. About five years ago she bought a few thousand shares of Apple stock and hung on to it until just recently. As I write this she is on a long vacation in Europe. So, it goes.

While I am basically using the same operating system, Unix, I don't know anything about apple or its products. I have been shown a few applications which are interesting.  I have to say one thing. Steve and his company made a lot of people a lot of money. He has carved out his place in the history of, if not computers, at least in marketing.

Some of these sound like eulogies. He's not dead, just not a CEO on paper. Tim Cook has been the de-facto CEO for a long time and things didn't explode like everyone predicted. Apple will be fine.

Whatever your thoughts are about Apple as a company, Steve Jobs shaped the personal computing as we know it. The man is a true visionary and above all a product person. Something that lacks in most boardrooms with their silly MBA suits.

To me the story will always be his comeback. And his second act:Pixar. Everyone forgets Pixar.

Whatever Apple is now, when they began they were a beacon of hope. ( Go ahead and sneer.) My wife and I had a business that was spendng $600/month on printing. We paid $3000 for a 128 K apple in 1984, and cut our printing bills in half, and put out a lot better-looking product. That computer paid for itself in 6 months. We have been buying Apples ever since, and every one has made us money. You can hate Steve Jobs for whatever reason you want, but his ideas and energy have made American business more productive and more competitive than almost anyone else I can think of. He deserves our respect, and our blessings, at a minimum. As for you professional haters, you are fleas on the elephant. Thank you Steve. Go with God.

Perspective is such a funny thing.  I see so many people at this site commenting on all the proletariat sheep who can't see the raging economic forest fire through the false green shoots.  However, simply suggest that Mr. Jobs really wasn't all people built him up to be and you swarm like agitated bees being smoked out of the hive.

If you can't write your own software for a given HW platform, and you rely on others to provide you your business tools, then you are just as guilty of being a sheep chained by the nose.  I spent years trying to break small business owners in America and Canada away from the cattle call software/hardware paradigm, and was given the same uninformed reasoning year after year.  The large HW/SW manufactures have superior product support, data protection, scalability and applications.  Nothing can be further from the truth.

Was I successful?  All of my clients are happy, productive, license and virus free and highly scalable.  However most of my business was in South America.  Because of budget constraints they had no choice but to keep an open mind.

Giant marketing schemes, and your own dependence, has convinced you that there is nothing better then your beloved iLife.  Maybe one day you sheep will too awake and see that the HW/SW industry driven by large manufactures is nothing more than an extension of the broken Keynesian Capitalism, Centrally Planned system.  Probably one day before they forcibly implant your FDA approved iDChip.

Don't know how old you are, but at the beginning of the personal computer age, there was a small critical mass of folks collaborating and/or arguing away their days in what became Silicon Valley.  The PC-Mac made the computer industry and lifted the workforce away from balky teletypes wired to some giant heavily air-conditioned mainframe into which some of us used to feed the punch cards onto which we had painstakingly written our programs, or away from desk-size word processors.  Yes, the industry would have developed at some point anyway, but I would be willing to bet even Moore's Law would not exist if these long hairs in Cupertino and Palo Alto and Merced hadn't developed the personal computer and made economies of scale work.  Even a collection of genius nerds needs a conductor, and Jobs largely filled that role.  The nerds could figure out what was possible, Jobs figured out what was useful and/or sellable.  I didn't do that, you didn't do that.  The man deserves some credit.

Finally, it isn't his fault that you cannot market well enough to meet your own expectations.  It was not too long ago that nobody wanted Apple products, either, because there wasn't enough software to satisfy people who think one might need 500 different spreadsheet programs.  Jobs turned that around and was the key factor in the evolution of desktop publishing, small scale CAD/CAM and graphic arts.  Sure, he's a showman, and the fanbois can be as unnerving as a Jehovah Witness or Mormon missionary, but one would be hardpressed to point out a more significant figure in tech or US business in the last fifty years.  Not Jack Kilby not John Backus not Linus Torvald not even the lovely Hedy Lamarr in tech, nor Jack Welch or Walter Wriston.

Ahhh, and the Queen bee comes to cheer lead.

I didn't once place fault on Jobs for my failure to educate the sheep?  I don't even blame him for making other people a lot of money.  You may want to pull your head out of his ass for a moment because you didn't hear my points.

First, there are a lot of people on this site who consistently point out others are sheep for their lack of knowledge in the area of economics.  Well watching others ohh and ahh at something they just don't have a clue about needed pointing out.

Second, because of Jobs and others, at the HW standards forefront, the evolution of the personal computer and hand held devices has suffered.  But most people have no idea or could care less as long as their favorite entertainment system doesn't crash.  Again pointing out sheepish attitudes towards technology.

You must have missed my subtle reference to v-chip technology.  Central planning is trying to suppress individual thought and crush the little false freedom we have left.  People like Jobs went from developing and driving an industry to signing on as morality police for Central Planners.  Hey, you got you politics in my technology. No! You got you technology in my politics.

Did they do some wonderful things there in Silicon Valley?  Yes. Only a fool would say no. However, it has been and continues to be at a big price.  If you can't see that then you are really not as familiar with the industry as you think you are.

Do not ever forget that steve jobs and nancy pelosi created a tax code where american "corporations" are bat shit afraid of a 35% repatriation fee.

He does not have a PhD. He might not even know OHMs law. But the dammed engineers who understood ohm's law payed way, way more than he did in his life. They did not pay oppenhiemer levels, but that is why we have Greenspan,Bush,Clinton,Bush,Obama, hillary dancing to the music with bachman rubbing up against it.

Apple is the biggest corporation in the world 'cause timmy does not understand that windows based user interface of turbo tax. Shout out to all my .net playas from Xerox corp.

SJ is still Chairman, and just stays behind the curtain to check how the cook is. It could be the end of APPL era, however, lots of ppl have prepared for such day coming.

This might be off-topic, but...

Fuck Ben Bernanke.

And fuck the horse he rode in on, too.

Brilliant career. Ankle biters need to grow up. His accomplishments are enormous. Suck on your mountain dew, kiddies and reflect on what this guy has managed to achieve in the sphere of commerce. Get a clue.

Hats off.

Zero Hedge, like any site, has good and bad aspects of it.  Zero Hedge is unique as the good far, far outweigh the bad.  The bad though comes out from time to time and today is an example.  The malcontents who have no respect for themselves let alone anyone else come out from the woodwork to disrespect a genius and it disgusts me.

Those who propose the economy shall run on pixels deserve a righteous shredding.

Agree, stateside.  The folks who can't or more probably won't do, the envious, the mouth breathers, the ones who blame their inaction and/or lack of preparation on others be it Jobs, the jews, blacks...just round of the usual crowd for the losers.  It is sad to see so much missdirected vitriol at a doer and a creater.  What the world and this country is a thousand Job like folks not takers.

Why is he a genius? Just curious--I'm used to thinking geniuses are people like Newton, Einstein, Beethoven, Goethe, Dirac, Galois, etc. Please enlighten me.

Well...Guess I have to piss on the Jobs pity party, but frankly, who gives a fuck?

Energy. It's all about energy. The slack-jawed, bubblegum chewin', sideways-hat wearin', silicon valley ultra-techno geek-fest don't and doesn't amount to shit...about shit.

It's about coal babies, and the railcars that transport it. It's about crude oil: Texas Sweet and Venezualan sour and Saudi sour. It's about nattie, nat gas that is, and the buses and generators that run on it.

Your stupid little gay silicon valley pipe dream doesn't amount to shit or shale. So go on with your little fantasies about moving pixels and hence moving the world.

BEE TEE YOUS bitchez. It's all about the BTUs.

LAUNCH IPHONE 5 AND LET'S GET THIS ECONOMY ON THE MOVE AGAIN!!

But without Steve....

who'll tell us what new features the QE3 will have which are better than the QE2 and why we should pay even more for the same...

Dear Chindit13,
Thats Hedley Lamarr... not Hedy Lamarr.  Yes, and I see how your mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.

Jailbreak bitchez!

Sorry Chin old boy... just had to do it.
