Moments ago, the apparently fake twitter account of the Russian minister of the interior Vladimir Kolokoltsev (which was created days ago) sent out the three completely unconfirmed and uncorroborated tweets stating that Syria's president Assad "has been killed or injured" which the market, in all its ultra-high speed trading wisdom, took and ran with, not waiting for any actual confirmed news to be released (because obviously Russian official channels have never heard of news wires such as Interfax).

So basically 'the spike' was around .60 cents? 'WTI soaring by nearly $1' doesnt seem like much of a big deal. But not surprising that all market activity now consists of baseless rumors and 'Tweets'.
The actual jump was over $1 from the low point this morning. $9.80 to $91.80.
There always seems to be some over bullshit for the crude spikes during the US trading day.
Remember a little over one month ago when oil hit $78.
Doesn't matter Obama is toast with gasoline at $4 right now. When people see gas advertised at $4.49, even if it is premium, consumer confidence will post the biggest collapse in history.
On another note diesel is $3.65 with regular unleaded at $3.90. No price fixing manipulation there.
Regular is at 3.619. A week ago is was as 3.48. A month ago: 3.37. It's jumped 25 cents in the last month but I bet you ten gallons that one gallon will cost at most 3.50 by elction day if not less. You must live in LA, guess what, for the rest of us not living the high life if LALA land, gas is about 3.60. That's a lot below your 3.90 price. And I have no idea where you're getting 4.50 from. Though I do agree, 4.50 gas will kill Obama's reeelection bid. But, I don't see it happening. The inflation in pet supplies is a good indicator of where we will be. Bulk rabbit food went from $.18 a pound in 2008 to $1.39 a pound now. Imagine that insanity at your local grocery store. We've seen doubling and tripling. Wait until a can of tomato soup costs $12.
As it happens, those of us using gold & silver for money and those of us storing food and water that doesn't even need freezing (though some that will is good until the power is cut off) will not do so badly at all.
I won't care if cans of soup go up 100x in price when I've got a year's supply.

The markets are full of tricks. Stop blaming JUST the robots. Tech stocks used to have this happen to them all the time during the Stock Bubble, and there were no robots trading then to speak of. There were buyout and takeover rumors galore. "Whisper Numbers" ran rampant before earnings. The Henry Blodgets of the time moved stocks all over the place and spreads sucked.
I watched a couple of traders make a small mint trading crude this morning on precisely this fake news. They could not have cared less about robots. (I don't care for robots spewing out millisecond-class trades either, and it was sure fun to see KCG take it in the cake-hole last week. Could not have happened to a better group of people).
But honestly, if you want to take the time out to trade, or not to trade, something that is an unconfirmed rumor, then that's on you and if you can't hack it, go buy a 1.5% 10-year and be done with it.
