Syntagma Riotcam Resumes Broadcasting From Madrid Where Cops Use Rubber Bullets On Protesters

Tyler Durden's picture

First thing this morning when discussing the upcoming festivities in Europe in the aftermath of Spain's decision to hike sales tax from 18% to 21%, while making sure it is the common people who get hurt in the upcoming bank nationalization in which sub notes and hybrid debt is impaired, largely held by retail investors as the FT showed yesterday, we said that "Spain promised to crush its middle class even more by impairing retail held sub debt and hybrids, while forcing them to pay more taxes, a move which will lead to some spectacular Syntagma Square riotcam moments." Three hours later and the riotcam is now live.

From CNN:

Spanish police used rubber bullets and batons to disperse protesters in central Madrid, witnesses in the city said Wednesday.

Hundreds of people moved quickly out of the area as the police moved in.

Protesters, including a group of miners who have marched on the capital, are demonstrating against Spain's government and the austerity measures it is imposing as it seeks to curb the country's debt crisis.

Madrid's ambulance service said 43 people were injured in clashes at or near the Industry Ministry.

The injured include 26 miners and 12 police, as well as a number of supporters of the miners. Eight are receiving hospital treatment but the injuries are not serious, the ambulance service said.

The clashes came as Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced an increase in the sales tax from 18% to 21% and a series of spending cuts, Spanish news agency Efe reported.

Announcing the measures to lawmakers, Rajoy said they would cut the budget by 65 billion euros ($80 billion) over two-and-a-half years, according to Efe.

Actually the only thing the "measures" will lead to, as whoever is the Greek finmin these days can attest to, is precisely the same economic toxic spiral breakdown, where nobody pays taxes, and where daily strikes cripple the economy.

And of course the imminent arrival of Chorizo the riot dog.

Speaking of Margaritas, always use silver tequila(not aged) while making them and Costcos "Kirkland" brand silver tequila is well worth it's price! for $19 a bottle and a smooth flavor you can sip it or mix it.

Spanish miners, all male with access to heavy tools and explosives use home made bazookas in some riots, hence the heavy hand of the riot police. The bloodied women are (by the looks of them, short hair, dirty, unkept) unemployed extreme left wingers that joined the riot for fun. I used to talk about whats coming to my friends and colleagues in London years ago, before any of this even started, early 2000s and they would laugh at me and think Im crazy.

Their perspective was "If you have nothing to hide, why should you worry?"

Whereas I said, the (terrorism) laws are not made for the minorities, the real targets are the locals.

India had that problem...they still the govt went after the big fish by taxing the products as they left the factory itself, not waiting till actual sales happen. They called it excise duty. Now we have both...excise duty only if you buy in cash, excise + sales tax if you buy using check/credit card/electronic transfer. Pure barter/black market transactions will ensure end of the "developed economy". Welcome to the 3rd world.

I'm not sure it's an inherent love for the corporatist state at play...  look at the idiots who made minimum wage to sign Linda Green's name to mortgage documents...  incurring substantial personal liability to do so...  why would they do it?  It doesn't make any sense in any sort of pecuniary way...

I think the reality is that these people simply do not understand what is at risk...  as a result, they cannot properly value their actions, which leads to abnormally risky behavior.  There is this sense of security that comes with large organizations and the government...  when in reality, the corporation nor the state care about you and, in fact, as simply setting you up to take the blame...  for shit pay under the circumstances, no less.

Hey, my favorite Dick, I came back to this thread, 'cause it strikes a chord with me, and re-read some stuff, including your semi-correct post. Why semi?

Once upon a time, I was a genuine tough guy = Airborne, Ranger, Infantry Captain, CO of a Ranger Training Company of Infantry Division.

Your post is semi, 'cause you think it is about the money - TPTB are paying the cops to tromp on the protesters and quiet stuff down.

NAW. It's about the training, and the attitude, and the macho. You think those Polica's are out there for the money? First off, in July, all that fucking gear they are wearing is hot. Believe it or not, that is really hard work, what those guys are doing. Been there, done that.

They are out there for the fix: the adrenaline, the chance to use the training and all the cool tools - rubber bullets, shields, formations with shield lock/overlap and shuffle step and...been there and done that too - not so different from a group of firefighters working together with a double 1"1/2 hose lay advancing on a very hot point fire (been there, done that, too).

I weep, as an old man, for the fact that the 1% can send out citizens against citizens, while those fuckers put their money in offshore accounts and ready their escape.

If you think the protesters are wrong, you are mistaken.

If you think the Polica is wrong, you are mistaken.

The real enemies are not in the steet - that's just theater to mask the thief's get-away.

I truly don't know anymore whether to weep or start shooting.

And I say this knowing it will be seen by few, being in the middle of an 'old' zh topic. It was just so clear, watching the video the second time without the sound, how fucked people are believing TPTB and acting on what they say to do.

WHEN the Policia (wherever) lay down their arms and join with those (hippie, anarchist, communist, liberal, dupe, etc.) protesters to take on the real enemies - THEN we will have something worth celebrating.

All else until then is noise.

yesterday driving through a toll road on the Spanish-French border the French Police pulled me over, searched my car, even pulled a panel off my interior with a screwdriver

I didn't enquire how my British Passport, BMW coupe and general Northern European demeanour ticked every box of their 'Looks Alot like a Basque Terrorist' hit-list because believe me, if the politicians are out-of-control lunatics you're going to get no change out of their paranoid-delusional crones (Police) for a sensible discussion of who the fuck they think they are stopping you and ripping your car apart

far as i can tell they put the interior panel back correctly, no squeeks to date

i think they were looking for smuggled ANYTHING quite frankly, the terrorist excuse is just rolled out just as the politicians do as a big 'Catch All' so they can nosey into anything and everything

same problem last month on another border where i was loaded with Gold and Silver coins... they wanted me to pay taxes but they're treating me as an enterprise selling into Spain and not a private person with personal possessions

The most senior Customs guard at the border even called up 'The Big Cheese' on the phone who also couldn't interprit the Rules correctly. By their classification anyone crossing the border in a Range Rover or any rich bitch with €20,000 of gold, silver and diamond jewelry crossing their border should also be paying taxes

yoiur car, your jewellery, my coin collection are all personal items, not for sale either wholesale or retail which is where the taxes apply.. personal items are NOT being sold into Spain on a commercial basis therefore no tax applies

you trying telling that to these Govt crones/dimwits they haven't a fuking clue how to interprit the Laws and don't know what they're talking about... so i had to double-back (at their suggestion) and enter their country through an unguarded border.

Yes you heard that right, they told me how to avoid them.. try making this shit up, nobody would believe you

the world is run by arseholes (law/rule-makers).. but it gets worse, they apply them like a clown on a machine gun post!!!

Will a large number turn them in?  Yep.  But a small percentage is going to go on the warpath.

2013 my ass - you kids.

In 19 ought seventy, had my VW Bus taken apart at the canadian border while wife and two cats cooled heels in some immigration/border control office and got lectured at for an hour by some asshole guarding the canadian frontier border from 'you hippies' as the vigilant guards made sure I was not trying to import any maryjane into their pure land.

Note - the first thing they did was open the sliding side door of the bus - a sort of a unique feature at the time - all the damn suburban vans have them now - and then searched the interior very thouroughly. Then closed door.

Guess which panel the stuff was behind?

(Note: That was the very old wild youth days, been a respectable, law abiding citizen for 35 plus years now...)

(Note Two: Mostly)

Same thing happened to me in 74' crossing in a vw van at Sue Saint Marie. They took Everything out, checked under the dash, in the pillows, hand in the cereal box, hub caps, etc. Told me if I lied about not having drugs that besides going to jail there was a four hundred dollar fine. The fuckers didn't find the pot hidden in an oil rag in the back in the corner in the dark. Just before we crossed back into America we stopped at the last rest stop in Canada on what is US 5 in Vermont and stashed everything in a hollow tree.  They waved us back across of course. If you are ever up that way...  :)

Actually, I think the end goal is to destroy America. Despite their best efforts in education and increasingly oppressive laws, governance and tax policy, you guys still have far too many independently-minded, relatively affluent, well-armed citizens for any oligarch to feel comfortable having you around.

Europe is just 'stuff that happened'.

As Rajoy in the face of ECB pressure continues backpedalling from his promises to resist austerity measures, Spanish yields continue above 7% and what has been so far a slow simmer on the back burner is beginning to reach full boil up front. As the three California municipalities file for bankruptcy presaging a cascade of similar actions nationwide, you would think that it won't be long before the flouridated and media besotted American Wallmarteers turn their attention from the Mitt and Barack show to the economic pillage of their pensions and basic services and start making a bit of noise themselves. But then again the capacity of the AmerCIAns for gratuitous self inflicted and misdirected random violence and crime will be the most likely result.

No sympathy for these subsidized spanish miners. Other organized groups will feel withdrawal symptoms and also stage aggressive demonstrations. The miners ara basically looking after themselves and are very aggressive thanks to the fact that they are mostly men and have tools and know explosives. Their 'fight' is being celebrated by left spanish parties, which apparently would benefit from this descent to civil conflict. A line has to be drawn that respects their right to protest while keeping roads unblocked and streets without organized thugs.

To keep law and order will be a big challenge and unfortunately violent confrontations is going to be the norm in Europe. Look at Greece where Golden Dawn sympathizers sweep the streets picking up fights with african street peddlers and left wing groups leave bombs in the front of a foreign company.

The alternative of doing nothing is much worse, because every organized group would fight harder and convince themselves they can get things by force. At the end, Europe would look more similar to the Middle East, and the majority of the population would get tired of this and vote for the strongest group just to 'keep the country running on time'. Then they would not even be able to stage any protests, even peaceful.

Difference between Greece and Spain?

Greeks are a united people who are used to fending off the depredations of outsiders.

Spain is a fractured country riven by regional and sectarians rivalries which were supressed but not eliminated by Franco. During the "good times" since his passing these tensions have remained at a low level...three guesses what's coming down the pike now that times are not so good.

"...look at the headlines at the top of this morning—"Clerk hurt when masked men armed with knife rob store," "8 hurt in series of city shootings" and "Man acquitted of murder last year gunned down—make a pretty compelling statement: The Second City is still a violent place."

"When questioned about the death of 7-year-old Heaven Sutton, who was caught in the crossfire of rival gang members as she sold candy in front of her home in June,  Emanuel commented, "It's not about crime, it's about values." He was pressed to clarify the comment."

There was enormous anger in Iceland shortly after the economic crash, people were fighting the police and going after bankers and politicians where ever they could be found or attacking state buildings and police stations.

The conflict was brought to edge of a civil war were lots of people could easily have lost their lives, but the politicians decided to back down at last minute and respect the will of the people.

The path that is often taken in situations like these is to riot and fight until things get out of hand. Like when the french shortened the french elite by ca 30 cm.

I think that if we dont want to repeat the same cycle once again it would be better to out smart the elite rather than to dispose of them as we have done in the past, because the odds are that if the problems leading to the crash are not diagnosed and processed correctly trough the legal system, we will be doing the same thing over again, only with different players.

Why not create a new path this time, do something different.

I once had some training, as an Infantry officer, in crowd control, and I thank Bugsquasher for his comments on Franco's legacy - La Guardia - because based on my training the response seemed a bit excessive. I watched the RT tape a second time with no sound and observed some (not all) of the Policia firing direct, instead of firing low so the rubber projectile strikes the pavement and richochets upward, which takes a lot of kinetic energy out of the projectile and was how we were trained to use them.  You can for sure kill a person with a direct shot, say to the eye.

Technically, the use of rubber bullets instead of tear gas is a significant ratchet up of crowd control force - interesting that they are *starting* here.

This will not end well.

I was in Spain in the early '70s and was warned by friends that the La Guardia always traveled in pairs and that if I ever saw one by himself to turn around as the other one would be behind me.  Duing that time violent crime was delt with more frequently with summary execution ("the subject was shot while escaping") than with arrest and trial.  Old habits die hard I guess.

Still the case, to some degree. My brother's wife is Colombian and has some family in Spain, who they visited last year. They were told by the family, who live in a fairly isolated rural bit of Spain (dunno where) that if you get pulled by the cops while driving around, particularly if there's no-one else about, be VERY polite and be prepared to pay an 'on the spot fine' for just about anything the cops can find wrong with your car. They were warned not to argue or talk back, cos a baton in the teeth often offends.

I don't know if it still practiced today but back in Frano's day the La Guardia set up regular check points on the road, often in the middle of nowhere.  There would be a heavy white line across the road and a small guard shack and woe be unto anyone who failed to stop.

I'm really sorry for the people of Spain; in fact I'm really sorry for most people the world over. For over a decade all the warning signals have been ignored, ridiculed and sometimes believed by a small minority. I think it is time for a revolution it will be upon us soon either way. Unfortunately the people will respond with protest and demonstration, which will be met with a very aggressive authoritarian response. This won't accomplish anything and will only get the wrong people hurt. The common people should take their money out of the bank instead a very silent and peaceful protest. This will hurt the right people most.
