T-Minus 11 Months Until Geithner Resignation

Tyler Durden's picture

Easily the best news of the day:

  • GEITHNER SAYS OBAMA WOULDN'T ASK HIM TO STAY FOR A SECOND TERM - BBG

Oh well, life is tough. Surely that basement office at Goldman Sachs will have some daylight and a TruboTax manual to make post-administrative life bearable for Geithner.

More from Bloomberg:

  • "He’s not going to ask me to stay on, I’m pretty confident,” Geithner says in an interview with Bloomberg Television.
  • "Confident" Obama will win second term
  • Not concerned about Wall Street complaints over Dodd-Frank;
  • "I would worry more about the basic confidence of Americans that they’re going to face more opportunities, more likely to find a job, keep a job, save for college, save for a dignified retirement"

And this is the last time Timmy was confident about something.

Full interview:

Geithner on whether he'll serve as Treasury Secretary for another four years if President Obama is re-elected:

"He's not going to ask me to stay on, I'm pretty confident. I'm confident he'll be president. But I'm also confident he's going to have the privilege of having another secretary of the Treasury… Something else for me."

On Wall Street's frustrations with Dodd-Frank:

"I would not worry too much about them. I would worry more about the basic confidence of Americans that they're going to face more opportunities, more likely to find a job, keep a job, save for college, save for a dignified retirement…They're under more pressure. No industry likes reforms that change the way we do business. But we're doing that because we have to protect the economy from ever facing again the type of crisis we saw. And I am very confident that these reforms will make our financial system a stronger financial system, a more stable one, a more safe one, where consumers feel they have more protection, investors feel better protection, people are less likely to be victimized by the behavior of a few bad actors. That's what these reforms are going to do."

On whether money that's being made off private equity investments should be taxed at a higher rate:

"Absolutely. And the president's long supported that. And you see a lot of support for trying to do that. And it serves a basic principle of fairness in this context. So we're going to work to doing that. But we're going to try to go beyond that, too, because just doing that is not enough."

On Europe's crisis:

"I think it's important to recognize that they're making progress. They really are now. They're doing a lot of things to put in place reforms that help fix their financial problems, hopefully help them grow more rapidly…They got a lot of work to do. But that comprehensive a strategy, reforms combined with making the financial system stronger, combined with a stronger firewall to support those countries that are reforming, those are the things they have to do to make this work."

On the last time he spoke with German Chancellor Angela Merkel:

"I haven't seen her in a while, but I talk to my colleague, the finance minister, all the time. I talked to him last week. And I'm going to see a bunch of my colleagues in Davos then, of course. One of the reasons I'm going is to have a chance to meet with them again and think about the stage of strategy."

On what he'll tell his colleagues at Davos:

"We tell them to keep at it, make sure they deliver and put in place a stronger, more credible firewall so that investors around the world know that, if they invest in Europe today, those investments will be rewarded with the support necessary countries that are making really tough decisions, in Italy and Spain, in Ireland and Portugal, those countries have the support they need for it to work.

On whether the U.S. doesn’t have influence on the important discussions that European leaders are having right now:

"No, I don't feel that way. We have a very close relationship in this. And we work very closely together. They ask us for advice. They want to learn from the mistakes we made and the things we got right. And they need the support of the world for this to work. And so my own experience is they're very open to working with us, and we have to do it together."

On whether Europe is too big to fail:

"Europe is a huge part of the world economy, and that's why it's so important to us and for countries around the world that Europe be more effective, more successful in getting this under control. It's very important that they get this right. And as I said, they're making some progress, but they've got a lot of work to do."

On the manufacturing economy in the United States:

"If you look across the American economy today, even with all the trauma caused by the crisis, even with all the damage still out there because of the crisis, exports are getting stronger and manufacturing stronger. Energy is stronger. Agriculture is stronger. Industrial production is stronger. You're seeing encouraging signs of recovery, even though we still face a huge amount of challenge. And what we're trying to do and what you heard the president say last night is, for us to grow faster in the future, to create a lasting foundation for a stronger economy in the future, to create more opportunity for middle-class Americans, we have to be investing more in this country, getting Americans the skills they need, making us more productive in using our energy resources. Those things are really important. We do more of that, we're going to be very strong in the future."

On what else the Treasury can offer to make it more enticing for companies to manufacture in the U.S.:

"One thing we can do is change our tax system so we're creating more powerful incentives for companies to invest here, because, again, we want the stuff that the world needs, stuff Americans are uniquely good at, to be produced in the United States by American companies and by foreign companies, like you see Siemens today. What the president proposed is that we reform our tax system and create stronger incentives for investment in manufacturing here."

On what President Obama meant when he said that "every multinational company should have to pay a basic minimum tax" during last night's address:

"Around the world, over the last several years, you've had countries compete in a bit of a race to the bottom, by lowering their tax rates to try to attract investment by other countries. So for us to compete in this world, we have to really do two things. One is we have to change our tax system so that we're trying to catch up to them a bit, so we're not sitting up there really high against the rest of the world, and create more incentives for investment here, but we also have to change parts of the tax system that now encourage people to build that next plant outside the United States. It makes no sense for the tax system to be encouraging people, incenting companies to be building jobs outside the United States. Now, American companies are global companies. They're going to be producing around the world so they can serve those markets. But we think we have a very good shot at a lot of the things the world needs being built here in this country."

On whether there's a risk of penalizing American companies that send jobs abroad:

"I don't think so. We're very confident that we can design - working with Congress - a set of tax reforms that will improve the incentives for investing, make manufacturing stronger. We think we can do that."

On whether that includes a lower corporate tax:

"We've got to lower the rate. We've got to do that by eliminating a bunch of special deductions, loopholes, things like that. But, again, the basic imperative should be - and this is what should guide reform of the tax system - is to make it more likely American companies and foreign companies are investing in this country, creating and building things here."

On how to compete with the Chinese labor force:

"It depends on what you build. But in a lot of things that matter, that cost of labor is one of the least significant parts of the cost of producing something. And what makes companies successful and competitive is how they use technology to make those workers more productive. And it's that combination of things that we have been uniquely good at as a country. We want to make sure we're getting better at that. We can't stand still. We got a lot of work to do in that context. But that's the challenge we have."

On whether a return to America's manufacturing roots will be the major driver of growth over the next 10-20 years:

"We think manufacturing can play a broader role, but the great strength of the American economy is the diversity of strengths we have…We're very good in a range of sectors like…And our strength is the breadth of those strengths…The government needs to be doing a better job of creating better incentives to invest here, equipping the American people with better skills so that they can compete, and we're going to work very hard in making more progress in that area. We're making progress, but we've got a lot of work to do."

I wonder when we'll know if TG resigned or it was Bama's idea.

Maybe TG and his gang wouldn't print ENOUGH.

We'll know more as more rats flee the ship.  Strange time to announce this, perhaps a reelection ploy to fall on a sword like that?

Federal Reserve claims they need independence to remain apolitical in their decisions.

Fed is political now.

Fed is owned by US Treasury as in when US government prints more debt, Fed buys them giving legitimacy to the government elites.

At least Geithner was better than GIVE ME $700,000,000,000,000 to bailout my bankster friends HANK PAULSON who got the job for 2 years so he doesn't have to pay hundreds of millions in taxes when he cashed out GS.

Geithner's job #1 is to beg China to buy more US government debt. The round eye failed.

Chinese respect old folks. Buffett may garner better response from Chinese new capitalists party.

Geithner's job #2 is rescue the Ford family by bailing out the auto industry....save GM, save auto parts suppliers who also supply parts to Ford.

Geithner's maternal grandfather, Charles F. Moore, was an adviser to President Dwight D. Eisenhower and served as Vice President of Public Relations from 1952 to 1964 for Ford Motor Company

His father, Peter F. Geithner, was the director of the Asia program at the Ford Foundation

Geithner's job #3 was bailout wall st.

He was Under Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs (1998–2001) under Treasury Secretaries Robert Rubin and Lawrence Summers.  Summers was his mentor, but other sources call him a Rubin protégé

He was director of the Policy Development and Review Department (2001–2003) at the International Monetary Fund.

he also became a member of the Washington-based financial advisory body, the Group of Thirty.

Hmmm...Now that the people and the Sec of Treas are in agreement about the bad actors, what will it take for Obamao to have Holder prosecute said bad actors.  Hmmm.  We are all now in agreement they exist yet no one will prosecute.  This is a very curious development indeed.  I would be willing to bet my best wooden nickel if Obama prosecutes the criminals, he will get re-elected (for better or for worse).

Cue debate on whether it is better to put these guys in prison where they belong or defeat Obama.

Pretty damning when your treas sec agrees the whole meltdown was because we have criminals too close to the $ spigot.  Are we now acknowledging that we will not prosecute those who caused this?

Is the inverse true that unless Obama (via Holder) prosecutes them he will not get re-elected?  Anyone I talk to wants to know why we will not prosecute these criminals.  Inquiring minds want to know.

The questions are always softball.

No one ever asks the simplest.

Why all the boom-bust cycles of the modern era, with such "capable" hands as yours on the fiat & regulatory tiller?

Aren't these cycles always debt/leverage/policy driven boom-busts instead of simple supply & demand issues which always sort themselves out much faster without ever increasing amounts of public debt/leverage/policy?

In fairness, I'd just like to see the eye twitch and facial ticks of the reponses.

It's the Newt/Mitt show that is so extraordinarily bad plus the realization that as abysmally inadequate as the current WH occupant is, neither of them would be better.  I haven't changed my mind about Ron Paul.  I think that if he doesn't make it, we're really screwed.

We met with some clients last weekend who'd been enthusiastic supporters of Obama last time around (a lot of people got caught up in the rhetorical swirl).  They're on the verge of shutting down their high-tech manufacturing plants and retiring because they know they simply can't continue to operate in this country unless things change (and they don't want to operate overseas).  They had to add six employees in the last three years to help their compliance department with new regulations for the 200 person workforce.  With the increased healthcare costs, they can't cover all employee costs the way they always have in the past and they expect Obamacare to seal that deal.

The good news is that I think we may have converted them to Ron Paul supporters.

Not really a resignation yet. Something to be more concerned about is as these central planners are moving on from policy making they tend to do the most damage leading right up to their exit.

Nothing short of bringing this and other central planners to justice and hold them accountable for the crimes against humanity will just be the system of revolving doors and bullshit where crony capitalism is rewarded and the best that is our US government and big business continues to grow.

I don't think anybody understands how perverse and intrenched the "system" is. The people who run things are very willing to eliminate you for any reason. You are scum to them.

They are scum to me. Use their reasoning in reverse...to understand a possible solution.

@Ima anal sphincter, you and IQ 101 are both right.  Rather than argue think of working together.  One audience overlooked in practically every discussion on ZH is the U.S. military.   Today TPTB have already made policy changes indicating they're trying to force out dedicated, loyal troops and replace them with mercenary types.  Congress has forced the military to accept policies meant to drive good officers out.  Now Panetta is giving speeches about benefit cutbacks.  Bernanke was at Fort Hood a few months back telling troops to be patient with the economy because discharged vets can't get jobs that pay anything close to what they made in the military.  Without the military and police to protect TPTB their control would be neutralized.

benb posted a quote by Kissinger, the same Kissinger that was negotiating with North Vietnam to let them take over South Vietnam.  In the period Kissinger schemed to give Vietnam away 2,000 more U.S. troops were killed because he and those working with him today don't give a damn about our troops.  If you get an opportunity speak with someone in the military before they're replaced by a real mercenary.

As Henry said, the ultimate aphrodisiac is power, and Carter, as giddy as a schoolgirl in the smoldering aura of Kissinger's presence, was smitten. Their passionate liaisons were marked by animalistic grunts followed by hair-raising shrieks of delight echoing through White House hallways, sending staff and visitors alike scurrying from the frightful cacophony. Rosalyn was especially troubled by the 'special friendship' Jimmy and Henry shared, yet was as powerless as a grape before a steamroller in her attempts to cool the bi-partisan inferno the two political titans generated, like a pair of rutting tomcats under a full moon in Hugh Hefner's back yard.

Geithner is probably more respected and well-liked on Zerohedge than within the halls of power, so his potential draw for an IB or HF looking for a little influence is extremely limited.  I wouldn't be surprised if Geithner's salary peaked as SecTreas, unless he ends up at some 4th tier finance house.

I can't even see him pulling any decent fees on the lecture circuit, unless the sponsors toss in a free Happy Meal for the attendees.

Geithner is part of the Globalist’s administrative class. His dad ran the subversive and traitorous Ford Foundation. He has been no more in charge of the Treasury than Mumbama is actually the President. They are merely fronts, carnies, confidence men acting as the interface to execute the directives of the Round Table Groups that control the government and US military.

    An example:

“The most powerful of the Black Nobility families are located in Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Britain, Holland and Greece in that order These people earned the title of "Black" nobility from their ruthless lack of scruple. They employed murder, rape, kidnapping, assassination, robbery, and all manner of deceit on a grand scale, brooking no opposition to attaining their objectives. These all have immense wealth. And? money is power.

Documentary proof as to the existence of the Committee of 300 is not forthcoming, and it may be no more than a convenient phrase to describe certain key players. Socialist politician and financial adviser? to the Rothschilds, Walter Rathenau, writing in the Wiener Press (24 December, 1921) said, Only 300 men, each of whom knows all others govern the fate of Europe. They select their successors? from their own entourage. These men have the means in their hands of putting an end to the form of State which they find unreasonable." Exactly six months after publication, Rathenau was assassinated.

    benb's picture

    Another example:

“The powers of financial capitalism had (a) far-reaching aim, nothing less than to create a world system of financial control in private hands able to dominate the political system of each country and the economy of the world as a whole. This system was to be controlled in a feudalist fashion by the central banks of the world acting in concert, by secret agreements arrived at in frequent meetings and conferences. The apex of the systems was to be the Bank for International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland, a private bank owned and controlled by the world’s central banks which were themselves private corporations. Each central bank…sought to dominate its government by its ability to control Treasury loans, to manipulate foreign exchanges, to influence the level of economic activity in the country, and to influence cooperative politicians by subsequent economic rewards in the business world.”

Dr. Stan Montieth interview given on11/14/10 – “What is taking place in America is not happening by accident. There is an organized intentional effort to destroy the economy of our country. Now how can I make the statement? I read the plan. Where can you get the plan, It’s called the Earth Charter. It was written by Steven Rockefeller who is the nephew of David Rockefeller. And if you honestly believe that Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are the two wealthiest people in the United States why you have been reading Time Magazine too long. The real power belongs to the Rockefeller family they’ve been around for almost a hundred years. And basically the Rockefellers dominate Chase Manhattan Bank. David was the president of Chase Manhattan for many years. Now it’s J.P. Morgan Chase, they control CitiGroup, they control the major pharmaceutical companies, they control Exxon and Chevron. They control our major corporations and of course David Rockefeller’s Tri-Lateral Commission controls our government. How can I make that statement? Well you go back and read Barry Goldwater’s ---- With No Apologies…and on page 280 of that book Barry Goldwater says- You know the Council On Foreign Relations is domestic but the Tri-Lateral Commission is international. Their goal is to take over financial and commercial interests of the world by first seizing control of the government of the United States.(Barry Goldwater 1979) What have they done since then? Well the North American chapter of the Tri-Lateral Commission which was birthed by the Council on Foreign Relations in 1973. (And the Council on Foreign relations is a front for a secret society created by Cecil Rhodes back in 1891 dedicated to taking overt control of the world.) Cecil Rhodes wanted England to control the world and to bring America along. The plan changed after the First World War where America would take over the world and bring Great Britain along. You can find this documented in a book called Tragedy and Hope: A History of the World In Our Time written by Professor Carol Quigley, a leading historian of the twentieth century. An historian who actually discovered the secret society that controls the world today. How do I know? Because I went back to Georgetown University in 1980, I went through Professor Quigley’s papers before they were censored and I found all of his correspondence with Sir Alfred Zimmern who was a member of this secret society and who told Professor Quigley all about this secret society and who was in it. And then of course in 1921 why, this secret society which had a front group called the ‘Round Table’ created the Council on Foreign Relations which then birthed the Bilderburger Group and then birthed the Tri-Lateral Commission in 1973. Of course at that time the chairman of the Council on Foreign Relations was David Rockefeller. David Rockefeller financed the Tri-lateral Commission and is the honorary chairman of the North American Chapter today. Now between 1977 and 2008 why every president and/or vice-president of the United States came from the membership roles of the Tri-Lateral Commission. Actually, six of the eight presidents of the World Bank; Eight of the ten American representatives to the World Trade Organization; Seven of the Twelve Secretaries of State and nine of the twelve secretaries of Defense all came from the membership roles of this North American Chapter of the Tri-Lateral Commission. And today twelve of these people surround Barrak Obama. Don’t let them dissuade you. They point to Barack Obama –you know he’s a socialist. He’s a Muslim. He’s a communist. He was born in Kenya, he doesn’t have a right to be president…They are playing games with your mind. The important issue is that Barak Obama does what he is told. He is controlled by the Tri-Lateral commission. In fact General James Jones, a four Star Marine General who heads the National Security Council in a speech in February of this year (2010) at a Munich Security Conference talked about the chain of command in the National security Council (Now remember the head of the National Security Council, General James Jones meets with Barak Obama every day and tells him what to do.) And General James Jones said we have a chain of command in the National Security Council through Brent Scowcroft and Sandy Berger and we get our orders from Henry Kissinger every day… well people don’t understand we have a one party system with two branches and it’s all political theater.”

You speak the truth BenB. Now, tri-lateral is a pyramid form of government. The administrative depth of the model is 666, representing 140 years of general strength.

The time of "Rulers" has passed and we are now into a last period before mankind finishes his evolution lasting 40 years. This is the time of "Leaders".

More choice will be provided but a conflict of the cabal mentioned and a new alliance is coming. The earth model fills out to 50% on one side and 50% on the other, both competing for final prizes (the real prize is to NOT be the monkey in evolution next time!).

While filling out the model and conflict cannot be avoided as it is how we spur evolution, the theatre of competition IS open for construction and we'll do much of it online.

The cabal itself are Rulers. They have tremendous fear as our speed of evolution has surpassed their ability to control. Such older men that saw the horrors of WWII are dying off now.

Only real way to minimize casualties instead of assassinations, but they have entered the maze now and may exit by evolving (must compete).

As for yourself, you owe your mentor a very big apology. I hope this has been done, we need every man, woman and child to be in the supply chain and prepped for competition. It will can and in most cases, be a heck of a lot of fun.

    Cheers,

4D Traveler, the First. The Last is who you owe an apology to.

They will then completely control the earth. and its natural resources. The people will be completely enslaved just as the people were in the ancient Roman Empire. While the above may sound like fiction, I can assure you that it is true. I wish it was fiction, but it is not, it is reality.   --      The above recitation is quite blunt, perhaps more blunt than the professor would have liked, but he knows and I know that what I have just written is true. However, most people do not want to know that such a Machiavellian group of men, spread strategically throughout the world, really exists. They prefer to believe that all is well and that we are  traveling down the road to world peace, global interdependence and economic prosperity. This is not true..."

What I heard was that there were only 1000 copies in the original printing. This information was not meant for the general public. The intended readers were top intelligence agency and federal officials so they cold understand what was really going on i.e. the irrational government actions such as Standard Oil of New Jersey shipping oil to the NAZIs throughout WWII or Ford building tank factories in the Soviet Union at the height of the phony cold war. It’s all staged.

benb, you are doing a great job to bring this matter and this book into highlight!!!

Quite fortunately that the very rarity of printed edition was already converted into digital one to reach vast readers without much restriction (via multiple mirrors, via torrent and so on)...one just needs to dedicate sufficient time to savor it in the fullness!

I believe every reader of ZH should read this excellent yet huge volume of TRAGEDY AND HOPE: A HISTORY OF THE WORLD IN OUR TIME (1966) by CARROLL QUIGLEY.

About its sheer size (8 volumes in 1090 pages), one should not wonder as his book does cover a long and crucial time span of 100 years over of the 19th and 20th centuries.

To all, please help to disseminate this book existence to all of your affiliation.

TRAGEDY AND HOPE: A HISTORY OF THE WORLD IN OUR TIME (1966) by CARROLL QUIGLEY

    http://bit.ly/xo9I7S (pdf, 5.42 mb)

Somehow one of the most revealing books ever published slipped through the editorial of offices of one of the major publishing houses in New York and found it way into the bookstores of America in 1966.

Professor Quigley was an extraordinarily gifted historian and geo-political analyst. The insights and information contained in his massive study open the door to a true understanding of world history in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is a work of exceptional scholarship and is truly a classic. The author should have received a Nobel Prize for his work.

In 1961 Carroll Quigley published “The Evolution of Civilizations”. It was derived from a course he taught on world history at Georgetown University. "Quigley coupled enormous capacity for work with a peculiarly "scientific" approach. He believed that it should be possible to examine the data and draw conclusions. As a boy at the Boston Latin School, his academic interests were mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Yet during his senior year he was also associate editor of the Register, the oldest high school paper in the country. His articles were singled out for national awards by a national committee headed by George Gallup.

"At Harvard, biochemistry was to be his major. But Harvard, expressing then a belief regarding a well-rounded education to which it has now returned, required a core curriculum including a course in the humanities. Quigley chose a history course, "Europe Since the Fall of Rome." Always a contrary man, he was graded at the top of his class in physics and calculus and drew a C in the history course. But the development of ideas began to assert its fascination for him, so he elected to major in history. He graduated magna cum laude as the top history student in his class. But maybe I missed something, maybe he really is a genius, although they kept saying that about douchebag Greenspan and douchebag Bernanke -- I remember perusing Bernanke's papers on the Great Depression, thinking, what a colossal moron!

There were a bunch of variables he completely ignored, like the "dark pools" being laundered through the NYSE from Prohibition.

Like the actual existence of securitization, leading up to the Great Crash of 1929, and being ended around 1933! (In stock form as opposed to this time in bond form, and with mortgage pool certificates, etc.)

Hey, but what would I know?  I turned down Andrea Mitchell once when she asked me out!

Oh no, another Tiny Tim kiss-of-death prediction. Did he get anything right during his shambolic tenure at either the bankrupt NY Fed or US Treasury?? Bumma is definately toast with a Tiny endorsement.

"I would worry more about the basic confidence of Americans.. save for a dignified retirement."

Yes i'd be worried with you about too having raided/raped public pensions to botch up your incompetent "unsustainable" financial planning. What a shambles of a career-long State crone
