Third Aircraft Carrier Group Coming To Iran

Tyler Durden's picture

For months now we have been following US naval developments and deployments in the Arabian Sea, which serve one purpose and one purpose only - to demonstrate US military strength in the Straits of Hormuz region and to keep Iranian 'offensive passions' subdued. Yet never has the US had a total of three aircraft carrier groups in the vicinity, always topping out at 2 in the Bahrain-based Fifth Fleet, most recently these being the CVN-70 Vinson and CVN 72 Lincoln, with a third boat present merely until a rotation in or out of the theater of operations was complete. That is about to change, and with it the prevailing price of Brent, which we are confident is about to take a new step wise price higher as the US makes it all too clear what the endgame is, because as Naval Today reports, the "US navy to deploy third carrier group to Persian Gulf", probably the CVN-77 George H.W. Bush which departed Norfolk two weeks ago according to the most recent naval update, or any other Norfolk-stationed aircraft carrier: there is a wide selection to chose from.

From Naval Today:

US Navy to Deploy Third Carrier Group to Persian Gulf

US Navy to Deploy Third Carrier Group to Persian Gulf

The carrier group based in Norfolk, VA will also include a guided missile cruiser and three guided missile destroyers, reports Interfax.

USS Abraham Lincoln had already entered the Persian Gulf via the Strait of Hormuz on Jan 22. She is escorted by a guided missile cruiser and two destroyers (USN), one British and one French warships.

Meanwhile, another US Navy’s carrier strike carrier group headed by USS Carl Vinson is stationed eastward the Strait of Hormuz, in northern part of the Arabian Sea washing southwest coast of Iran.

At present, the US has 15,000-men force deployed in Kuwait, expeditionary marine battalion, and amphibious landing group.

It is getting very hard to get good information about sea and troop movements since Stratfor was taken down.  I find that almost as disturbing as the movements themselves, and who can trust the sources remaining?  A buddy sends me DEBKA stuff all the time, I usually delete it unopened but scan the preview for morsels of truth between the obvious disinformation.  I have posted stuff here from GoNavy before only to have their locations roundly refuted by others.  Anyway they seem to update almost annually.  (sarc)

I also think the carrier groups get all the glittery headlines but the movements of the flat top amphibious assault ships (LHD's) is more significant.

Could it have been our own CIA spooks who took Stratfor down?  The timing is interesting; similar to the timing of DSK's downfall.  All so convenient.

Kralizek, before Stratfor was "hacked" We had two in the region, one off of Yemen, the other near Oman.  One in the region of Philippeans as well.  It is difficult not to think that the momentum of events is moving toward war, but then we will not know till TSHTF I suppose.

Situation similar to summer-fall 1941. "Everyone" knew that war was coming to the Pacific region: when Empires collide, wars result. But only a few - the Japanese Warlords, Churchill and his codebreakers, FDR and a handful of provocateurs & conspirators - would know when, where, and how.

Scenario: Iran has already stopped shipments to EU. Ooops... fucked up. They needed Iranian oil up until May. Now they get none.

EU economy gets worse, if that's possible. Ditto US. Iran trades gold for oil, gets lots of gold for oil, has no trouble selling gold for cash. Gold prices rise, slow but steady.

Iran watches US ships in PG, but does nothing to them. However, suddenly there is a massive explosion in Saudi oil fiels, terminlas, etc. Saudi exports are sharply curtailed.

World economy, no, Western economies are tanked. Iran sells all the oil it can deliver to India, China, Japan, and South Korea while the West goes back to driving ox-carts and riding horses.

And just to add insult to injury the unions at US refineries are threatening to go on strike, normally I am in favor of the ability to organize labor but in this case their demands are nothing but outright extortion.  It is an election year and they know that the incumbent is very vulnerable to the perception of inflation and a lousy economy.  High gasoline prices would sink Obama and they know it so they are doing to him what the air traffic controllers tried to do to Reagan.  Not that the controllers did not have legitimate issues in need of resolution, but what they did was rightly perceived as blackmail.

In the 1990s, I was assigned to a Battle Group staff (now called Strike Groups) that operated aboard a CVN, and we conducted a major exercise in the Arabian Gulf (i.e., Persian Gulf) with two other Battle Groups.  It was designed to make it clear to Iran that the mullahs should not mess with the U.S.  So, the U.S. has operated 3 CV groups in the Gulf simultaneously before.

This is not likely Armageddon.  It is likely merely a show of force to remind the "bad guys" not to do anything stupid.  Of course, they are "bad guys" for a reason, and they, by definition, do alot of stupid things.

In the end, the U.S. either looks like it backed Iran down, or the Iran does something stupid and the U.S. gets to use that as an excuse to really make it hard on Iran.  Let's just hope that the brinksmanship ends up as nothing but a lot of foolishness and the two children walk away muttering to themselves.

Ok, it is good to have someone on here who actually served in a battle group, so you know more then most of us. But my question is, what about Israel? They are going to hit soon, there Defence Minister and PM are both gearing up the Israeli public for it. So wouldn't it be wise for the US to surge their carrier groups in preparation for the airstrike? Also the Saudi King is screaming for the old USA to hit Iran, and he has a lot of influence in the halls of congress, and has given the go ahead to Israel to hit Iran.

someday in the future when someone conducts a major exercise in the Gulf of Mexico to make it clear to the USA that the chickenhawk war profiteers should not mess with that someone, the precedent has been set.

The USA will not have a leg to stand on in protesting against that someone's major GOM exercise....correct?

How soon will we(the USA) be hoisted on our own petard?

Ooooh, and little 'ole me, sitting on top of a bunch of mid 40's April UCO Calls... tee hee...

A few weeks back I came up with an "in case Clif High has it right" strategy. You know, 'couple good doom hedges:

Calls on selected producers of:

- Gold

- Oil

- REEs

And on UCO (2x oil price bull)

For the so-called "markets"???

- Calls on 3x Bear inverse etfs SQQQ, SDOW, SPXU

- Puts on DIA & SPY

Now watch, the sh*t is SO rigged the freakin' DOW soars, and gold tanks 7%, upon the first nuke airburst over Natanz... come to think of it I better hedge for that outcome too.

I would suggest buying OTM puts in TNA (to express the view of a downward direction) and buying OTM calls on SPY (ass coverage) at the same expiry would be a more efficient way to manage your equity view.   I like to buy calls in SPY because it tracks well and has low overhead, and I like to buy puts in TNA because it has a downward tracking bias and high expense ratio.  Generally, buying calls in low overhead, good tracking ETF's; buying puts in high overhead, bad tracking ETF's.

funny thing, but I have noticed something that could be telling in my local job market. I've noticed 4 or 5 companies hiring because they recently got fat contracts from the pentagon. one company is a middle man purchaser who buys various items for the troops overseas, don't know why the government would outsource that type of thing but there it is. second is a company that does plate finishing for military vehicles and they are looking to hire a lot of people to put on the production line which is to say they are expecting business to ramp up as this particular company never does mass hiring. third is a major MIC player, who is hiring for everything from production to radar and electronic warfare engineers to software and just about everything in between. In fact, locally at least, it seems the only business that is booming right now is connected to the military.

all this at a time when the talk is all about scaling back on those very same expenditures.

obviously I don't know if any of it means anything at all, still it does give some local flavor to all the rumors of war regarding Iran and beyond.

"There is no hope that Iran will voluntarily curtail its nuclear ambiguity. The first reason is that it lives in a neighborhood with Israel, which is reported to possess two hundred nuclear warheads, a stash that is part of its illegal nuclear program that is outside IAEA scrutiny – but no one seems abashed by the hypocrisy. The second reason is that nuclear ambiguity gives Iran a measure of insurance. “The Iranians have no doubt taken note of two recent and relevant case studies: North Korea and Libya,” writes Ahmed Moor. “Kim Jong-Il died of natural causes. Muammar Gadaffi did not.” North Korea is a nuclear-weapons state; Libya gave up its nuclear program in 2004. Pressure on Iran absent a drawdown of the US’s aggressive military posture will not result in an end to the Iranian nuclear program. To demand it is tantamount to goose-stepping to war.  When there will be a shooting war, it shall not be a mistake nor shall it be out of necessity. It will be calculated and vicious, and the onus for it shall rest as it often does…on Washington."

iran ain't got no nukes, or,... are they trying, period!

the IAEA knew iran had no wmd's, as they set out the same tried, and failed [?] argument about iraq years earlier.

iran is weary of the leadership [iaea] council involving the makeup of their inspectors - seems everytime they inspect certain new facilities,  the iaea wants to interview more of iran's top scientist whom suspiciously get assassinated months later. coincidence?

'Pakistan', the united states, and china are responsible for the proliferation of underground nukes. how is that?

it goes back decades to jimmy [1977?] carter's administration, and every presidential administration thereafter. all were involved in keeping secrets from congress, and the public. remember this name, "Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan". khan was responsible in pakistan for building pakistans nuclear [chinese cooperation?] powerhouse using us foreign aid; with the monies and weapons - funneling off the bulk of aid [resources] in cash to a clandestine nuclear arsenal buildup. the us knew it!

n.korea, and libya were large buyers of pakistans nuclear sales network, for the building of nuke's - blueprints, material, special metals [designs/metalurgics/phisics,etc.], basic electronic equipment needs - were all on the market for cash to all bidders.

listen up,... in 1984 pakistan had successfully tested a nuclear bomb with the help of the "Chinese". the 'pakistan-islamic-republic', as it is known today also by virtue of america's generosity could now deliver the atomic bomb using american made missiles or F-16's.  and to this day,... putting alittle more icing on the cake, Beijing has a  continued-education program, upgrading Islamabad bomb blueprints, radioactive isotopes, and technical assistance with no questions asked. all the while america was covering up iran-contra [note: some data is dated,... but while in Massachusetts last year the u.s. airforce was still training the pakistan military to fly our aircraft by the hundreds in personnel alone - i personally saw them being trained] . Pakistan's underground nuclear trade went unabated and unobstructed by all world powers - especially the u.s.! nice!!!

talk about u.s. national security - in return for america's silence, the Chinese allowed US companies into the country showering them with no-bid contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars as nuclear power contractors, i won't name names.

america had finally realized that 'situation' has gotten out of hand, so they started a war with Afghanistan,... which if you haven't figured out by now was pretty much to do about reigning in pakistans loose nukes, and underground proliferation to rogue states in which pakistan once thought to be an ally is now gone rogue. we knew where osama bin laden was back in tora bora, but used the naivete as a way to gain al Qaeda's breached underground secured-intelligence.

since 2007 pakistans nuke's-4-sale are on fire, throughout the world -africa, europe, syria, saudi's, etc. etc., but one place you won't find them being purchased is in Iraq or Iran. the shiite's are peaceful people !

please let me reiterate one last time - if the iranians or for that matter iraqi's wanted those khan/pakistan-china made underground nukes, they would have had then in the 80's and by now there wouldn't be a fuckin thing the u.s./europe/israel could do about it!

thankyou tyler
