Three US Aircraft Carriers Now In The Middle East With Fourth En Route

Tyler Durden's picture

A week ago we reported news that Middle East veteran aircraft carrier CVN-74 Stennis was ending its brief sabbatical prematurely, and far earlier than previously expected, and heading right back into the field, er sea, of action. As Kitsapsun reported, "Bremerton-based aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis is returning to the Middle East much sooner than expected. The Navy hasn't officially announced the new deployment plan for the Stennis, said spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Zach Harrell." The ship came home to Naval Base Kitsap on March 2 after seven months of launching planes into Iraq and Afghanistan. Generally, it wouldn't go back to the Fifth Fleet area of responsibility for four to five years, after a deployment to the Western Pacific and a maintenance period. But with Iran making threats, crew members learned Saturday they'll be leaving again in late August for eight months." We concluded that shortly, Stennis will be the third carrier accompanying Lincoln and Enterprise. As it turns out, a third carrier was already en route, and as of today, CVN 69 Eisenhower is either at the opening of the Straits of Hormuz, or just past it. That makes 3 aircraft carriers in the middle east, 2 in the Gulf and the Arabian Sea and one just off the coast of Syria. And technically, the LHD 7 Iwo Jima Big Deck Amphibious ship, which is also just off the coast of Iran region, makes three and a half. Which means that a 5th one (rounded up) - Stennis - is coming in 1-2 months. Good luck Iran.

Source: Stratfor

So to recap: Four US aircraft carriers. One big deck amphibious warfare ship. One Iran. WTI well below its 2012 highs even with Bernanke having engaged in yet another flow-boosting Qualitative Easing operation. And One presidential election in 4 months.

Don't discount Russia so easily. They are crafty bastards I give them that.

And no I am not rooting for USSR. I have been watching these Soviets for so long that I have grown to like them a little.

Well you are right in a land war on thier territory they would be impossible to defeat.  But the balance of military power has changed so much since Vietnam.  Our technology has improved past the rest of the world by factors (not without problems - ie F-22).

But it's not just us, but our allies as well - like NATO, Australia, Canada, Japan and increasingly SK.  As a combined force the diminished Russia (not the USSR/WARSAW PACT of the past) is not even a distant match.  Not to say they can't make trouble - and they do.

Think of how many countries have moved to the West since the end of the Soviet empire - East Germany, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, the 'Stans.

Especially in East Europe.

A China/Russia alliance is more formidable.  But they are not going to fight for Iran and Syria.

As Ron Paul says "There is no external threat to justify our war spending (more then the whole world's combined), the threat is within - errosion of civil liberties, unchecked government control and power."  para-phased.

If you include NATO, Australia, Japan, and SK as well, the military might is overwhelming by multiple factors.  Russia and China are just bogey men to keep us spending.

You didn't even seem to read my post. I was talking about the USSR - everyone knows that current Russia does not have the spending it had under the old USSR, so asking why the current Russia hasn't built a fleet of carriers is useless. If they had a fleet, it would've been built in the era of the USSR, and the Russians didn't consider them a viable option. That's my point. Also, modern carrier defenses do indeed have trouble with cruise missiles in some cases - I'm not sure how advanced the technology has gotten in the last decade, but Millenium Challenge02 demonstrated that the electronic defenses of modern carriers and ships can be overwhelmed by a large amount of cruise missiles.

YouAreBliss's picture

Point well taken on the USSR - carriers were much cheap in the 60's and 70's.  It's not that the carriers have become so much more powerful - it's the advancement of their aircraft - the ability to project over the horizon a devastatingly accurate and lethal strike to air, ground and armor targets.

It would taken an immense coordinated cruise missile attack to have a chance to striking a lethal blow.  It would have to be a surprise attack with excellent coordination and a lot of luck.

Normal cruise missiles are vulnerable do to their slow speed.  The Sunburns are a different matter.  But they have limited range.

A Carrier Group have many deterrents: either three or four 20 mm Phalanx CIWS missile defense cannon. USS Ronald Reagan has none of these, having been built with the RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile system, two of which have also been installed on USS Nimitz and USS George Washington. These will be installed on the other ships as they return for Refueling Complex Overhaul (RCOH). Since USS Theodore Roosevelt, the carriers have been constructed with 2.5 in (64 mm) Kevlar armor over vital spaces, and earlier ships have been retrofitted with it: Nimitz in 1983–1984, Eisenhower from 1985–1987 and Vinson in 1989.[2][21]

The other countermeasures the ships use are four Sippican SRBOC (super rapid bloom off-board chaff) six-barrel MK36 decoy launchers, which deploy infrared flares and chaff to disrupt the sensors of incoming missiles; an SSTDS torpedo defense system; and an AN/SLQ-25 Nixie torpedo countermeasures system. The carriers also use Raytheon AN/SLQ-32(V) electronic warfare systems to detect and disrupt hostile radar signals in addition to the electronic warfare capabilities of some of the aircraft on board.

I just cannot forget Stratfor’s advice for Obama: War with Iran regardless of whether it is declared or not would be an effective reelection strategy.

It's not how many carriers you go into battle with, as the Imperial Japanese Navy learned at Midway, it's how many carriers you exit with.

The Iranians and the Syrians have no effective deterrent to our carriers, the range of the SunBurn missiles is to short to be of concern.  Our carrier aircraft can strike from hundreds of miles away.  Russia has no effective deterrent again our carriers AND Aegis Cruisers jamming capabilities.

Hi Bliss,  You are correct, when you replied to my post, "You know nothing about navel history so don't bring it up."  I must admit, the only thing I know about navels is to keep mine clean!  I do know a bit about sea based air power that can "strike from hundreds of miles away".  The IJNAF aircraft at Midway, the Kates, Vals, and Zeros could also, but once the deck is U/S and carriers cannot launch and recover it doesn't matter much.  Losing all the carriers at Midway, meant that they also lost all their aircraft, every single one from those carriers, and also lost almost all of their pilots, the best in the world at that moment.

But I do get my "USN Perceedings" every month!  All kidding aside Bliss, you should join Tailhook Association and carefully read each issue of The Hook -- Journal of Carrier Aviation.

YouAreBliss's picture

Well since you are a "USN Proceedings" reader - you should know the difference between now and Midway.

Last I checked the Iranian's have no carriers.

Their is NO other navy fielding a carrier like the a Nimitz Class - let alone a dozen.  You should know that as a member of the TA.

Now if you want to compare the capabilities of a VT-6 versus an F Super Hornet I will gladly listen.

Being such a sea based air power expert, you must have read the Project 2049's report, if not here is a link

http://project2049.net/documents/chinese_anti_ship_ballistic_missile_asb...

If you want to debate WWII history - the US lucked out twice.  Once by having our carriers at sea when Pearl Harbor was attacked, second in many bad decisions by the Japanese command at Midway.  Would you like the details?  It could have easily gone the other way.

Enjoy your JCA.

This might prove interesting :

Millennium Challenge 2002 (MC02) was a major war game exercise conducted by the United States armed forces in mid-2002, likely the largest such exercise in history. The exercise, which ran from July 24 to August 15 and cost $250 million, involved both live exercises and computer simulations. MC02 was meant to be a test of future military "transformation"—a transition toward new technologies that enable network-centric warfare and provide more powerful weaponry and tactics. The simulated combatants were the United States, referred to as "Blue", and an unknown adversary in the Middle East, "Red".

HideExercise action

Red, commanded by retired Marine Corps Lt. General Paul K. Van Riper, used old methods to evade Blue's sophisticated electronic surveillance network. Van Riper used motorcycle messengers to transmit orders to front-line troops and World War II light signals to launch airplanes without radio communications.

Red received an ultimatum from Blue, essentially a surrender document, demanding a response within 24 hours. Thus warned of Blue's approach, Red used a fleet of small boats to determine the position of Blue's fleet by the second day of the exercise. In a preemptive strike, Red launched a massive salvo of cruise missiles that overwhelmed the Blue forces' electronic sensors and destroyed sixteen warships. This included one aircraft carrier, ten cruisers and five of six amphibious ships. An equivalent success in a real conflict would have resulted in the deaths of over 20,000 service personnel. Soon after the cruise missile offensive, another significant portion of Blue's navy was "sunk" by an armada of small Red boats, which carried out both conventional and suicide attacks that capitalized on Blue's inability to detect them as well as expected.[1]

At this point, the exercise was suspended, Blue's ships were "re-floated", and the rules of engagement were changed; this was later justified by General Peter Pace as follows: "You kill me in the first day and I sit there for the next 13 days doing nothing, or you put me back to life and you get 13 more days' worth of experiment out of me. Which is a better way to do it?"[2] After the reset, both sides were ordered to follow predetermined plans of action. After the wargame was restarted, the war game was forced to follow a script drafted to ensure a Blue Force victory. Among the rules imposed by this script, Red Force was ordered to turn on all his anti-aircraft radar in order for them to be destroyed, and Red Force was not allowed to shoot down any of the aircraft bringing Blue Force troops ashore.[3] Van Riper also claimed that exercise officials denied him the opportunity to use his own tactics and ideas against Blue Force, and that they also ordered Red Force not to use certain weapons systems against Blue Force and even ordered that the location of Red Force units to be revealed.[4] This led to accusations that the war game had turned from an honest, open free play test of America's war-fighting capabilities into a rigidly controlled and scripted exercise intended to end in an overwhelming American victory.,[3] which meant that "$250 million was wasted".[5]

When a military service leaks bad results from a war game, it's real purpose plays out in the next POM cycle as the service chief uses it as a bludgeon to gain more acquisitions funding to modernize.  They never leak the tweaking to ROEs, statistical inputs to engagement effectiveness or magic-moves that may have allowed the simulation to meet the intent of catastrophe.

But, small boat swarms and a large enough volume of ASCMs would certainly increase the fleet's pucker factor, just as SAM alleys make fighter jocks take notice.

Why would you want to compare capabilities of Torpedo Squadron VT-6 against an F/A-18 E/F?  Over a half century difference in time, and I've yet to see an operational F-18 with a torpedo slung under its belly or on any hardpoints.

So, a question for you about our aircraft carriers.  How many rounds can a VIB hold?  If you've been on carriers I'm positive you've spent a lot of time near these.

As Philip Giraldi of Antiwar.com says, “endorsing evil is politics as usual.” Apparently Mitt Romney knows as little about right and wrong as Obama and the U.S. Congress.

Writes Giraldi:

“It was ironic that even as Rand Paul was endorsing Mitt, a key Romney foreign policy adviser, Richard Williamson, was in Israel telling a local audience that ‘Iran will see that there’s a new sheriff in town’ if Romney is elected. Williamson promised credible military threats against Iran, including actually using armed force to stop the Iranian weapons program, recommended arming the rebels in Syria, and reiterated the extremely dangerous arguments that Russia is America’s ‘number-one geopolitical foe.’ He also pledged that Romney’s first overseas trip would be to Israel, while the candidate himself has already stated that he would defer to Tel Aviv’s interests when crafting U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.

“Romney, who does not accept the U.S. intelligence community’s assessment that Iran has no weapons program, was the only Republican presidential hopeful actually proposing an increase in the Pentagon budget and the size of U.S. armed forces. He also frequently exalts American exceptionalism to support his belief that the United States should militarily dominate the world.”

Romney, says Giraldi, is clueless and dangerous on foreign policy.

It is all coming together... The timing is impeccable.

My theoretical strike plan on Iran:

Syria will fall in time for any carriers to get in place (Large chunk of Assad's inner circle has been taken out and rebels are moving into Damascus).  Syrian airspace will then be available for Israel.  Iraqi airspace as well (Notice how more violence going on in Iraq also).  Supposed Azerbaijan airspace and airbase is available.

Initial action could be a two pronged attack or a feint and attack.

US strike groups will provide the feint - looking like they will attack to draw Iranian attention south.  While providing deterrence and support (ie jamming, air refueling, etc)  While Israel strikes from the north.

As time goes by and the missiles rain down, Iranian defenses will be overwhelmed or effectiveness eroded.  US strike groups will then mop up if the Israeli strike is not completed.

Then again anything could happen.  Either way, Iran will have no idea which way it will go... unless it chooses the 3rd option... cornered rabid wombat attack.

Wed, 07/18/2012 - 23:57 | 2630754 HungrySeagull

My take.

Spirits rotating out of Missouri with two crews 24/7 fly into Iran and anyone else that is deemed a threat.

Alot of action will be recon with all available assets including space. If memory serves, one Diplomat sitting on the bench getting GPS coordinates was sufficient to provide targeting data for all of Bgad.

There will be a hell of a rain of missiles in both directions.

Iran will do whatever it takes on all fronts to shut us down. The fast boats for example. How many can those 5 inch or whatever they are using these days take out, with the special tungsten canister rounds?

Other Nations in the area are going to get collateral damage and decide they will get their chops in too.

The Internet will probably be restricted. I am exploring using a software download that will allow a computer to be a server by proxy to keep our nation going.

Gas, Oil, Food etc will go up so fast and so high like they did on the day of 9-11. And even more should we get hit in any of our 50 states.

The military will do what they gotta do. In the past they have demonstrated great pairs of bawls in creativity in targeting. I have every confidence in them.

So, bring on the 200 dollar oil, 15 dollar gas, 5 dollar bread and 10 dollar milk. Bring it....

Ive been preparing since the war started back in '83

Now...

It will be good to settle this with Iran once and for all. And maybe when it is all over, we carry on.

Iran is hurting financially due to sanctions and the low prrice of oil. It's estimated that the need oil around $120 just to balance their budget. The natives are getting restless and the Mullahs can't have that. Look for Iran to do something stupid in te near future in an attempt to spike the price of oil and try to keep their citizens focused on the "enemy" instead of the economy.

Four Carriers and a full compliment cornered in a bathtub.   Whose idea is this?   One heavy barrage and they're gone.   I don't see a lot of good coming out of all this war Hillary and Barack are dragging the country into, but I know it must make Dr. Evil Dick Cheney happy.  That's what bothers me, he's happy and we're too confident.  We're too transparent and leaving the other side with no good choices, worse still is that they have made our forces too vulneralbe.   They've lost sight of Putin and I don't think they respect him, and that can be a dangerous mistake.  We've got our chin way out there and not giving the devil his due.  I'm repeating myself, but I don't like the attitude we've taken here, we're being careless.  Careless in the Middle East can get you killed.  Too many lies, too confident, too bad.  www.electanewcongress.com

I'v said this before, I'll say it again, the US Navy has not fought a nation with modern submarines since WW2. In the almost seventy years since then, submarine warfare has grown by leeps and bounds, making carriers nearly obsolete for all but conducting operations against nations without modern subs. {which Iran has}. This will not be a "blue water navy" operation, it is a "brown water navy" operation, a very differant type of warfare from what huge carrier battle groups are designed and used for. All the iranian subs have to do is lie at the bottom of the persian gulf and wait. Once the carrier is almost right on top of it, fire everything at it at once. I doubt this will go as planned for the US Navy. Most of Irans subs were recently upgraded by the russians with some of the best technologies {anti-detection and weapons}. Carrier warfare is all the Navy brass knows, much like the admirals of the 1930'a were locked into thinking the battleship was still the predominate weapon in the fleet,

Once this mess starts, God help us all. Hamas, Hezbollah and every other militia group in the ME will go full bore against Israel and NATO interest everywhere, not just in the ME either. Europe has a huge muslim population now, and it would be foolish to believe they will just sit back and watch their last champion get attacked by the west and do nothing. If Russia and China get directly involved, it's WW3. Has anyone forgot that Russia said just a few months ago that a military strike upon Iran would be considered a strike against Russia? Likewise China has plenty of interest in Iran to defend too. These CFR warmongers might have bitten off more than they can chew this time. Let a couple of those carriers go to the bottom and see what the markets do. This is how empires end, by over-reaching. The US is ripe for a disaster.

American taxpayers must be getting ready for post-January tax hikes. The thrill of deploying so much military hardware is what makes Public Spending worthwhile and no doubt Dick Fuld and Jamie Dimon and Lloyd Blankfein will be getting Americans to buy War Bonds with negative yield to fund the party. Saudi Arabia will express gratitude by funding the Obama (Osama) Foundation for Mutual Understanding and Russia will have the joy of watching Chechnya merge into Syria  and Muslim Fundamentalists destabilise Central Asia in a sort of reversal of the Ottoman Empire implosion of the 1880s

Iran is shaking in their boots NOT....you have 5 carriers "manned" halfway with women who'd rather be at home.

I served on Eisenhower in the first gulf "war".....before the Navy decided to committ suicide. What a joke it was. We sat there and waited for months until some pussy in DC finally said, "Ok, fire"

The Navy ain't what it used to be. We have 40 year old nuclear aircraft carriers manned by retards too busy trying to get a piece of ass in the anchor windlass room or a rad-con shower to worry about a little thing like war fighting capability. That, and we make Admirals based upon the recommendations of the likes of Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Boxer. We are totally fucked. We have to send 5 carriers out because at 2 of them will end up with a few pregnant morons and have to leave the fight so the Navy can handle the logistics of evacuating the idiots from the vessels.

Perhaps we could "pull an Iraq" on Iran...you know, massively overwhelming superiority of forces.....perhaps. But Putin has a hell of alot to lose if we get a "walk" in this fight. I think this one might sting.

Yeah. Iran is reeeeaaaaal nervous.

If Putin and Ahmadwhatshisface aren't laughing their asses off right now, I'd be surprised.
