Three Years Of Zero Hedge
Today is the three year anniversary of Zero Hedge.
Starting with humble beginnings and even humbler aspirations, and proceeding through over half a billion page views filled with breaking news, analyses, cynical ruminations, snarky sarcasm, grotesque hyperbole (two words best used to explain our current socio-economic catastrophe), and broadly - entertainment - this website has been lucky enough to grow into the world biggest fully independent financial blog (whatever that means), garnering between 1 and 2 million page views daily (usually VIX-dependent), and serving around 4 million unique readers per month from all around the world.
While we enjoy cutting through the endless media bullshit and propaganda, exposing stupidity, learning from our mistakes, often with a much-needed dose of self-preserving humor that is so critical in this day and age, and hoping to satisfy a persistently unmet niche in the media space, the truth is that no matter the content, the site would not have succeeded or achieved anything without you, our reader. And while most come here to quietly read, learn, snicker, or just to pass the time between trade confirms and fake European bailout headlines, others prefer to engage in direct commentary, often times boisterous, frequently venting, and always uncensored and uncut. Because more than anything, this is a place for anyone and everyone who has an open mind, and more importantly, a sense of humor.
It is to you, our readers, that we owe our sincerest gratitude for providing not only one of the most educated and intelligent, not to mention outspoken, readership bases one could hope for, but for constantly engaging us, and helping us grow and develop in ways we had never thought possible.
It is this what "social media" is all about.
As for everything else, it will happen... in due course. The transition from point A to point B will not be fast and it will not be easy, but it will take place. Because systems out of equilibrium always revert in due course.
And we expect to be there covering, analyzing, and certainly mocking it, every step of the way.

A sobering U.S. Labor Department jobs report Friday showed the economy lost 524,000 jobs in December and 1.9 million in the year's final four months, after the credit crisis began in September.
The unemployment rate rose to 7.2% last month from 6.7% in November - its highest rate since January 1993.
The steep annual drop in jobs marked the highest yearly job-loss total since 1945, the year in which World War II ended.
"We're seeing a complete unraveling of the labor market and are on track for getting beyond 10% unemployment," said Lawrence Mishel, president of the Economic Policy Institute.

BTW I just ran across something that pissed me off, which is that the FED already owns all American's gold in Fort Knox. When Reagan's Gold Commission studied going back to a gold standard in 1981 they found the US Treasury does not even own any gold. Whatever is in Fort Knox, and beyond, is already held (owned) by the Federal Reserve as collateral against US government debt. Which brings into focus their clear conflict of interest in pushing government debt while simultanously suppressing the price of gold, which is clearly anything but a barbarous relic. We was robbed!
Damn. I missed the first 1/3. Oh well.
The success of ZH demonstrates the lie of the efficient market hypothesis assumption. Nature abhors a vacumn but in so many respects the (un)free market has not provided as it would lacking the artificial constraints, repression, & manipulation, as grass grows in the crack in the sidewalk. There have been a lot of great voices here, and I've personally learned a lot from most of them. Some of the trolls and stalkers I could have done without (esp the guy who went a little too far into my personal life) but I've really enjoyed the whole ride.

I was sitting with an oil billionaire today listening to him complain about his generation sold out (guy is in his 60s) and how he feels the current generation is so dumbed down that we are in for hard times in the USA.
I wanted to tell him about ZH but didn't think he needed a heart attack (we workout at the same health club). Maybe next time ,though he doesn't know how to use a computer or iPad, I might loan him one of mine with ZH up on it.

I remember when there where no advertisers. Donations and other people's capital kept this site going. I remember Marla and all you old fools who knew how to get an arguement going and what it took to take the edge off information than was streamming past me faster than I could read. I remember when getting too stupid actually got a person a real ass kicking from the ZH bloggers. I still say I have the most junked blogs during 2009 and 2H 2010 ( I learned the 2H thing here).
For all of you dumb ass posters, gold is not yellow, you dumb fucks.
Each night when I turn this damn computer off, I swear I will not read ZH any more. I cannot take it. But, each morning, I hit favorites, News, Zerohedge, and in about 30 seconds I am mad as hell.
I come back each day for the humor. Most of the posts are still way over my head. I am not sure what the post meant, but I am sure it is not good, and I get a good laugh at the wit of the writers as they describe the facts behind the post.
I have become old, mean and cranky. I have lost my sense of humor.

I was going back looking at some of my first posts. I'd "discovered" ZH just a few months before the move from blogger, and then sat as a silent coward for while, I'll hit my 2 year anniversary here in a month.
This place is without a doubt the most awesome news site on the internet, and the commentary has caused me to clean my monitor many times. While I thought I was somewhat financially savvy before, what I've learned in the past couple years equates to decades of experience -- not a PhD -- in the real financial world.
If the world implodes, I'll be the crazy guy living in a cave, desperately listening for "dah dah di dit, di di di dit" on the shortwave, trying to find out what happened.
