Today's Mad 'Manipulated' World Of Markets; Or "How To Fit 2 Seconds Of Trading Into 1 Millisecond!"

Tyler Durden's picture

We noted earlier that something looked fishy into the close today - our so-called 'tickle-algo' appeared evident - but without the superlative HFT data that Nanex has, we had no way to know just how berserk things were. Here, for your viewing pleasure (with a hidden message) is the last 1 millisecond of trading in SPY today - a period in which as much trading data (quotes and trades) that would fit in two seconds of 'pipe' was blasted through the exchange networks. Nanex's 'Whac-a-mole' algo in all its glory - as they note "this has the strong odor of manipulation."

Nanex ~ 31-Aug-2012 ~ Whac-A-Mole in SPY

Whac-a-mole in SPY at the close on August 31, 2012. About as much trading data (quotes and trades) that would fit in 2 seconds of pipe, was blasted through the exchange networks in the last millisecond of the day. We estimate about $1 billion of SPY and 75,000 eMini contracts traded. The wild oscillations that are shown on the chart between 16:00:00 and 16:00:02 actually happened in the last millisecond of the trading session. Why the trades oscillate like that, we'll never know, but it has the strong odor of manipulation. And this event has happened before.

Charts below show the bid/ask spread (shaded) and trades (dots) color coded by exchange. For clarity, not all charts show all exchanges.

I have a friend at the CFTC that I constantly send this stuff too, and he brings it up to his boss who says, "WE DON'T HAVE TIME TO LOOK INTO CONSPIRACY THEORIES AND BLOG POSTS ON THE INTERNET"....

Makes me wonder... what are they doing then? Especially when you hear CNBC taking material from ZH to begin with...

All the needs to occur is to sabotage the 4 cell tower systems from chicago to NY.  Just start taken out nodes via power interruption, knock off a few of the emitters off the towers, or have an "accident" some how.  We know the routes, they were published in bloombergs piece about HF Trading and the cell microwave tower systems AND their data transfer rates.  Must be something that can scramble the system.

IF it is their pennies and trades the never happen, or our market, I vote for our market.

This is the "Matrix".

Why is this so easy to trace and see the fraud? Why doesn't the SEC use this same information to stop this nonsense? Why doesn't someone raise money and advertise this on a major network during a Sunday golf event? (right before every investment commericial, use a cheap local cable buy and hit 50 major markets) This is all the proof anyone needs and if the general public saw this, they would pull all 401K accounts and close them. Also show how bought and paid for our watchdogs are.

Stop crying on this site and do something about it.  There are so many peole on here with real  money to bring this out. Play there game better then them. If you can't then your the sheep. You know therfore: educate, inform, and make a difference.

SHOW EVERYONE HOW CAPTURED OUR REGLATORS ARE AND CUT OFF THE MONEY SUPPLY IN ONE SWOOP.  They dont care about you complaining on this site. Raise the dam money and do something about it. Smack them right across the face with it. Go after the money the same way they did to you.

I will donate 10K umbrellas and give them out at the next big golf event That read's SEC is Captured.  I would prefer to do the Masters on Sunday for maximum impact.

With that said. I read zero hedge every day. On here several times a day and see such great factual posts. Zero Hedge has nailed the HFT manipulation with pinpoint accuracy from day one.  Stop waisting your time calling people trolls and bitchen about the biatchez.  There are a ton of powerful, creative, writers and marketing people in here. Organize now.........

I think they aught to manipulate that sock of regulators heads so they can bring some integrity back to the market. Cause it has been and is rediculous.

I have said it, I am saying and I will always say it:

Just imagine Zerohedge did not exist? Oh crap, I can't even fathom it. We would never ever know all this theft happening in the market.

Thank you to all Zerohedge writers, regardless of whether I agree or disagree with what's writen.

Someone at Jackson Hole took a dump no less. The sewers must be ripe for a full reconstruction if it took only a millisecond, I believe, and the roof too.

Cypher: Whoa, Neo. You scared the bejeezus out of me.
Neo: Sorry.
Cypher: It's okay.
Neo: Is that...
Cypher: The Matrix? Yeah.
Neo: Do you always look at it encoded?
Cypher: Well you have to. The image translators work for the construct program. But there's way too much information to decode the Matrix. You
get used to it. I...I don't even see the code. All I see is blonde, brunette, red-head. Hey, you a... want a drink?
Neo: Sure
Cypher: You know, I know what you're thinking, because right now I'm thinking the same thing. Actually, I've been thinking it ever since I got here. Why, oh why didn't I take the blue pill?... Good shit, huh. Dozer makes it. It's good for two things, degreasing engines and killing brain cells. So, can I ask you something? Did he tell you why he did it, why you're here? Jesus. What a mind job. So you're here to save the world. What do you say to something like that? A little piece of advice. You see an agent, you do what we do. Run. Run your ass off.
Neo: Thanks for the drink.
Cypher: Sweet dreams

The reality is that the HFT has been pulled over everyone's eyes and either they accept it, or they defy it and lose. We need out of this automaton prison.

lewy14's picture

Careful. Do not become overwrought. Retain perspective.

What we have here is a rip off - subtle, and yet blatant at the same time - an orchestrated theft by a hord of high tech looters operating indirectly against more or less everyone.

We enjoy the capacity to gather, evaluate and discuss the evidence of this theft at our lesure. This is a luxury and freedom that no other generation of human beings has enjoyed in quite the way we are.

And be under no illusion that other generations did not suffer from homologous rip offs. They did.

Even the powers that be suffer - I believe it was Diocletian who was undermined by the backlash from guild who minted Roman coins when he dared to interfere with their systemic theft of Roman silver.

Yes, we're being swindled. No, nobody standing for election in either party will do a damn thing about it. Like the war on drugs, the TSA/Homeland Security and the general militarization of the police, it is largely beyond the ability of any elected official to control.

Whatever levers the people's representatives might once have had, have been removed.

What levers then remain to the people themselves? This is the only question worth pondering.

Looks like fishing expedition before the long weekend for other algos at the 51 mark with a lindy rig.  Move the bait around with a light twitch to see if there are any algos around and feel for  some bumps. Feel the bite at the 55 mark. Let him run and swallow at 56.5. Set the hook at 59. Walleye dinner tonight!

The biggest algo on the block can read and front run most all the other algos. There are some badass math nerds out there.

BlackholeDivestment's picture

...I can fix it.

It's simple. Just put all the SEC employees on the lowest government TSA base 28K salary, then make team(s), like a private company, that are based on earned commission bonuses from convictions, and establish a measured portion from penalty gains. They can reach higher base pay for indictments upto their personal GS level, only if the conviction rate average is above 95%. Then have the financial crime court judges principle portion of the penalty gains go into the judicial retirement account, lol. Then corruption gets turned on it's head. Lol.

Wow, a penalty based incentive, lol, imagine that for these porn addicted putzes. That would speed things up to a professional level and weed out the tares.

OT. The DOW, S&P, and NASDAQ charts are always the same. Is this not sort of like, hey fuck you all we don't care what are you gonna do about it? Report us to SEC??? LMFAO
See for yourself

Why don't they just combine them all? Seems like we get 3 flavors; chocolate, chocolate, and chocolate.

One wonders when there will be a defection from their ranks.  Then again, those usually end up getting suicided.

Send the hft shops back to mugging old ladies in dark alleys , and bring back SOES trading where market makers have to bid 1000 up and prices moved so you could see them .

EverythingEviL's picture

Eh...SEC doesn't notice anything unless it's PORN. Include some porn in those charts and we might be cooking with fire!

mind_imminst's picture

Volumes are getting lower. Is it because real traders and investors do not trust the market anymore? I hope so. That would leave the HFTs alone to scalp each other and make no profit. It would leave the FED with little (or lesser) recourse to affect the REAL economy.

Mark Wilson's picture

That was very interesting. Thanks for posting.
