Turkey Mobilizing: Media Manipulation, Provocation Or Reality?

Tyler Durden's picture

In the aftermath of the recent escalation in tensions between Turkey and Syria, whereby Syria was accused of hostile behavior for firing and taking down a Turkish fighter jet that supposedly spent at least 5 minutes in its airspace, today was a quiet day. At least until recently we saw the following footage in a clip uploaded to YouTube. Supposedly, Turkey has sent troop reinforcement to the Syrian border, after Erdogan's warning that soldiers approaching the border will be treated as targets, the clip explains, citing Turkish daily Zaman reported citing the Cihan news agency. This is unverified, nor is the statement that 15 military vehicles, including tanks and cannons, were dispatched to the border from Diyarbakir.

We are skeptical of the validity of the above especially since earlier today Russia said that Tuesday's Syrian shooting down of a Turkish warplane should not be seen as a provocation and warned world powers against using the incident to push for stronger action against Damascus. It was Moscow's first official reaction which made it quite clear that Russia will not just stand idly by awaiting for NATO to unilaterally take a decision to punish the middle eastern nation for daring to defend itself. But then again, this may be merely misreading Russia's resolve, in collaboration with China, to defend its own national strategic interests.

Finally, why we are concerned this may well be a provocation, but in the other direction, is that the only "news" of this development so far has come from the Times of Israel: a media outlet which the traders amongst you may say is "axes" vis-a-vis a particular outcome.

Large numbers of Turkish troops — including at least 15 long-range artillery pieces and tanks – moved to the Syrian frontier from the eastern city of Diyarbakir. A video published by the Turkish Cihan News Agency showed Turkish tanks being transported by carrier trucks toward the frontier.

The mobilization followed statements by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that the Turkish military will respond to any future violation of its border by Syrian military elements.

“As awe-inspiring as Turkey’s friendship is, Turkey’s wrath is equally awe-inspiring,” Erdogan told the Turkish parliament on Tuesday.

“The rules of engagement of the Turkish Armed Forces have changed,” Erdogan said. “Any military element that approaches the Turkish border from Syria posing a security risk and danger will be regarded as a threat and treated as a military target.”

Erdogan closed his remarks with an especially harsh condemnation of Syrian President Bashar Assad: “Turkey and the Turkish people will continue to provide all support until the people of Syria have been saved from this tyrannical, murderous, bloody dictator and his gang.”

We will keep track of real developments surrounding this latest geopolitical risk flare up, and keep readers updated.

Turkish Army is probably larger than the active duty Russian army, and given the demographics of the two countries Turkey may have as many military age men as Russia especially if you eliminate Muslims. In any event Russia's ability to move a large army to do battle with Turkey is doubtful and once it got there the Turks would chew it up. I assume no nukes.

You know little of the Russian Combat Mindset.

I war gamed it once on computer some years ago trying to stop the red tide from taking Hanover. Cost me 2000 tanks, all I had in europe while reforger was being sunk left and right at sea.

And still the USSR trains rolled west carrying 30,000 more tanks...

Thank god that was a game, one to remember when I began to coldly consider the nuclear arms.

My opponet taunted me by saying "Now will you at least hand us Europe while it's still good?"

There is one thing Turkey has that the Soviets want bad.

A patch of waterway.

That will be a glowing rubble to ensure the safe passage of Soviet warships and material for follow on ops.

The USSR is no more ( in case you haven't got the news) and if Russia has 2000 combat ready tanks I'd be surprised and they don't have any East Germany to bring them to bear on Turkey even if they did. If they tried to put a single division in Syria the Turks would overrun the place.

Mobilizing would consist of more than a couple of tanks and a few APCs. Turkey may be sending armour and troops to the border but tis hardly mobilizing for war.

I dont think Erdogan is really that stupid as to kick off a war with Syria (although he is a politician so it is of course possible), i think if this is real its just posturing. Turkey will melt down if it goes to war with Syria. PKK will take the oppertunity to rise up.

this will result in brzezinski balkanisation bitchezz

Another twist to the Arab Gas Pipeline (AGP) extension theory.

I think Russia does not want the AGP project to be extended from Homs to Turkey (and consequently to Europe).  The conflict of interest is quite apparent.

This is quite a compelling reason for NATO to want to install a friendlier regime, read "Muslim Brotherhood" [1]

"Revealed: CIA secretly operates on Syrian border, supplies arms to rebels"

"Arms and ammunition are being brought into Syria mainly over the Turkish border with the help of Syria’s Muslim Brotherhood network and other groups, the report says. "

source: http://www.rt.com/news/cia-officers-turkey-syria-378/

Putin's Law and Order in the Middle East

http://english.pravda.ru/russia/politics/26-06-2012/121487-putin_middle_...

26.06.2012

By Xavier Lerma

There's a new sheriff in town and he's bringing law and order to the Wild Middle East. He's making everyone realize that each has more to gain by cooperation rather than agitation. "You can't make money if your customer is dead", he'll say. "The more customers you have the more money you can make". He offers a new peace plan in the form of economic stability. Money talks, suckers walk.

President Vladimir Putin's visit to Israel is just one of the many visits on his world tour. He hopes to prevent WW3 and bring stability to the world especially in the Middle East. Putin reminds me of a teacher who spanked all the bad kids, made everybody sit down and taught everyone how to share each other's toys. One viewer on YouTube wrote:

"Netanyahu looks? like he just got taken to the wood shed."

Wow, their tanks rival their aircraft in representing a modern fighting contingent. That's an M60, I believe. That's the tank the US phased out in the late 70s and replaced with the Abrams. I'll take an M60A3 any day over an Abrams. It's engine and electronic suite is FAR more reliable. I also remember back in the early 1980s, M60A3 crews swept the coveted "Top Tank Crew" awards three years straight in direct competiton against the Abrams. The M60A3 is not some worn out mare, ready for the pasture. It is more than capable of taking on any amoured vechicle, anywhere, anytime.

I would want to read about the exploits of these 60 cans. There has to have been some amount of growing a pair going against the Abrams in those days.

It was a long time ago, I recall clearly the XM1 protoype at Aberdeen museum and looking it over. It was an interesting exercise wondering if the M60's would have been any good.

Today's Abrams are quite dangerous. Between the Leopard, Merkevas and Chieftains (This I respect... ) it's hard to show how the M60 can be any damn good.

Yes, I would like a stack of PDF's from those days if available... I have much to learn.

If I had a group of M60's and told to keep the M1's out I probably will have one or two as bait and seek to get at the sides or rear of the M1's... I hope that the crews of the new tanks will not look much to the sides as they race in to pluck the cherry.

Well, this virgin is packing a 105 rifle baby.

Definitely not reality.

If Turkey steps in....its likely to get it's own "Muslim Brotherhood Arab Spring" and break out into full blown 3 or 4 sided civil war, they have a huge Kurd population totally disenfranchised, and a well armed and financed (courtesy USA) ethnic enclave of all Kurds right next door.

Turkey couldn't invade Clinton's twat with those 15 tanks and artillery.

And at the look of it, it's outdated stuff... or do they plan to use them to cross into Syria to let Syria destroy a few of them to use it as casus belli as they did with the outdated F-4??

So the pilots haven't been found yet. Has anybody demanded a full inventory check of the German air force hardware? As far as I know Germany has (had?) some remote control equipment for F-4 to use them as a kind of expensive drones. Is all of it still there?

The Turkei thing is just NATO window dressing for a blockade.

The real action in Syria is (was) via the Kurds through Northern Iraq thanks to Israel.

The main issue is to isolate Damascus and otherwise create an sea blockade for Tartus and Latakia (sorry to all the Russia sailors R&R) and an air blockade for Homs and Aleppo.

The whole Arab Spring juggernaut is really something else - all these polities falling like dominoes like the controlled demo of WTC building 7 - only to trade the old boss for the new.

One of these days some analyst with zero war experience is going to recommend a bath salt induced robo-pocalypse instead of "nation building with democratic characteristics."

This whole operation is analogous to invading Arkansas, but without the lakes and forests.

Why is this happening again?

  • On Friday the NATO member Turkey committed a an additional blatant violation of international law when it violated Syrian Airspace and Syrian Territorial Waters.
  • The Turkish Phantom F4 was not shot down by a missile, but by a ground-based anti-aircraft machine gun with a maximum range of 2.5 kilometers.
  • Syrian authorities have delivered the wreckage to Turkish Authorities together with a report.
  • Bullet holes at the tail end of the airplanes show that the F4 was hit at the tail end and subsequently lost it´s ability to remain airborne. It also shows that Syria did not use a missile but ground based anti aircraft machine gun fire, after visual contact was established.
  • When fire was opened on the F4 it flew at an altitude of 100 meters and with a speed of 800km/h.
  • Syria has offered Turkey to form a joint military technical committee and visit the site of the event to help clarify eventual Turkish doubts.
  • While the world media focus on the riveting question if NATO will invoke Article Five against Syria, a coordinated assault on key government buildings in Damascus was initiated by NATO led insurgents.

How NATO Secretary Anders Fogh Rasmussen generates the confidence to continue NATO´s audacious disinformation campaign would be a mystery if it was not clear that a free and independent media in Western Europe and the USA that could challenge the house of lies that is built to justify a war is about as dead as human rights and civil liberties since NATO in 2001 embarked on a war of terror on the world and on the people which it claims to protect.

The mobilization followed statements by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that the Turkish military will respond to any future violation of its border by Syrian military elements

this is not about the planes imo

from monday [Paste}: Almost 40 of Syrian military personnel, among them a general and two colonels - have defected to Turkey with their families, according to an official who was interviewed on Turkish state television.

Turkey's state-run Anadolu news agency said 33 soldiers crossed into Turkey overnight. It said the defectors have been placed in a refugee camp in Hatay, a province bordering Syria.

Reports also indicate that thousands of soldiers, most of them low-level conscripts have abandoned the Syrian military. Turkey is hosting some 33,000 Syrian refugeesMore Syrian Soldiers Defect to Turkey

recalling that truth is the first casualty, this is not all lies imo

and the stateDept is not returning my calls again...

here, Turkey seems to be saying:  if your military wants to bivouac in Turkey, why can't we fly over you guys?  we can shoot you mofos too, ya know

this is the perfect measured respose for peace that i have been hoping and praying for...

The pilot was to blame for crossing into Syria.

Turkish pilots are imprecise tools. You could make a 60-y-old

Berber camel jockey into a better pilot.

So, the army guy new that if he told the pilot

'gel boor da' and told him to fly over the refugee camps,

just over the border in Turkey, that the pilot would screw

up and end up shot down.

BTW, the Turk airforce has lots of practice of 'innocent' fly-overs on foreign territory. They do it daily over Greece, sometimes all the way to Athens. I've seen dog-fights over the frontier islands.

Sometimes those bozos just scrape over the tree-tops.
